Xawtv
ok this is another plea for help. I've got an AverTV Studio tv tuner/fm radio/capture card. I know it is supported because when I boot into Knoppix from a knoppix cd the card works perfectly. Under my Debian Sid installation, I get a picture, but no sound. However the radio works fine when using gradio. So, I'm sure the problem is in the xawtv. I've tried to compile kwintv, but it doesn't seem to be able to find the QT installation. i tried a program called zapping, but it locks up my system when I start it. I really would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction as to where to find look to find out why xawtv isn't playing sound nick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes, I installed Oracle 8i and 9 on Woody. The only problem I remember having is having to make a symlink because the name of the gcc library was different than what oracle was looking for. also in looking through a bunch of support docs, I remember reading that alot of the oracle guys used Debian as their test bed, the only reason to certify only red hat was a purely motivated by the fact that ignorant management only recognizes redhat when the word linux is mentioned. But, I no longer use windows, and Boot Debian Sid for my OS of choice. I have long promoted Debian, even while my colleagues were Red Krap freaks because they thought it was cool to like linux, but not really know anything. But I have to say I agree with the original poster. Although I agree that our biggest threats to the 'Open Source' movement is things like the DMCA...etc. There is also the problem of the small threat. Not to 'Opensource', but to Linux it self. 'Opensource' is not Linux, it's a way of life. Companies like Tigerdirect, by promoting XP, have shown a bias. They are a hardware distributor, who are now promoting a software upon the hardware they sell. Are we not a legitimate OS that can run on the same hardware? Companies like Dell stopped selling Linux based computers because there was a lack of interest. But it was funny that I noticed that the same hardware could be bought for a cheaper price, from them, when it was shipped with winblows. Only problem was, and have experienced this, Dell would not honor their warranty if it was shipped with winblows, and got formated and Linux installed. I mean holly fril, If Gateway had a sticker that guaranteed that every piece of hardware on a specific Box was Linux compatible, no matter what os was shipped, they'd probably become better than they are currently. But, why do they not get this? HP recently announced that they will start supporting Debian, but where on their site can I gat a laptop pre-installed with Debian? I just want these companies to recognize that we buy too, and that we want to know if a particular product is Linux compatible. I mean, a while back I was a big ATI fan. But, once I realized they would support the video drivers only, but not support the All-in-Wonder card's TV functions, I completely quit using them, and am now anti-ATI unless they get their shit together and support Linux as a whole and not just when they want too. At least nVidia puts out Linux drivers for their cards! (yes, I know about the gatos project, but it's an outside thingATI has not helped them.) Hell, Bioware...although took way too long to put out the Linux version binaries for NeverWinter's Nights, at least they put it out. Unlike all these other companies who don't consider my OS worth while to develop for. These companies promote the M$ monopoly, and should realise that maybe, currently M$ may have a lagre group, 70% to whatever of the desktop world(just a guess for the rant), but are you really wanting to lose 30% of your business? And what if M$ goes underif you have never developed for others you go under as well. Jesus, how much of common sense does this take for them to get it? Honestly, how many of us would go completely to a particular hardware vender if they had a stamp that said'Linux Compatible'. You know we all would. And, I don't have a problem if tigerdirect, or anyone else, has banners that are windows oriented, but if they promote that they recommend windows over anything else, then we should let them know that we are Buyers as well and would appreciate equal advertisement or they will not get our business, and promote against them...like maybe a link page of Linux-friendly hardware distributors, or whatever we can to make these game developers and hardware makes know that we want to be supported, and are tired of being treated like second class citizens. I don't give a damn if most computers run winblows...I don't! and I want to watch DVD's, play games, burn cd's, and do all the same things they do. And, my opinion is that if they don'

SB pci 128 & jetway motherboards
I Just solved a sound problem with My Desktop. I purchased a SB PCI 128 and after installing it, I could play CD's, but the sound was very low, and when I played wav's, etc. I got alot of distortion and whistleing. At first I thought I got a bad card. It turns out that Jetway motherboards will not work with a SB PCI 128 without a bios upgrade. SO, a good hint for all, and one to add to Will's Newbie hint's. If having problems, check the Motherboard's Manufacture website for known problems. Wayne

Re: Progeny Debian
At work I use potato on my servers and woody on my workstation. But, at home I decided to try out Progeny. It's a nice distrobution, and yes the updates are free. It uses Grub instead of lilo, and when you update it also updates to the the current kernel that progeny is using. At work I manually upgrade to newer kernels, so sometimes it's nice for it to be done automatically. I haven't tried to upgrade progeny to woody/sid, but since progeny is a combination of potatoe and woody, I haven't seen a need to. You can test out different settings at the lilo prompt By making the argument there it will superceed the conf file vga=791 is correct for 1024x768x16 But, some have had success with vga=864 which should give you 1024x768x24 I was never able to get that mode to work on my laptop which is an ASUS A1300. Re: Sync WinCE device with Evolution ?
First of all let me tell you that Ximanim(or whatever) made Evolution so close to Outlook that it's like the microsoft problem. It's buggy, it crashes alot...etc. For one, I have never been able to import my microsoft .pst file. Two, I also cannot import my Kmail, or linux Netscape mail files. Three, Even though I check "remember my password", it never Does. Four, I've had to re-set up my accounts 3 times because it crashed and does not remember the setup. So, in my opinion, the have made it so much like Microsoft, they have copied their problems. SO, I do not think it will sync with CE. It can't even do what was promised! Re: Sync WinCE device with Evolution ?
As far as I know it cannot be done. To sync with a WinCE device you would have to be running ActiveSync. I seriously doubt Microsoft has any inclination to port it to Linux. The other problem, which I found after doing some research. There is no way to import(directly) the outlook.pst file. the PST format is propriatery(spelling?) Which is another reason there is not Sync for us with WinCE devices. To get your email into Evolution you have to go to a windows machine and install Mozilla. Mozilla mail(for Windows) has the ability to convert the PST file to an mbox file or files. I have not checked wheather or not Mozilla for Linux can do the conversion. Then you put the mbox files on your linux machine, and import the files into Evolution. This is just for your mail. If you want your contacts, you have to go into outlook, export your contacts to a DOS format, then Ximian has a perl script to convert it to a format that Evolution can handle. So since Evolution does not use or handle the pst format. There will be no Syncing anytime soon. In the exim.conf after local_domains, it has the original 3 (localhost:mydomain.com:mail.mydomain.com), but when I add any other domains, with colins in between, it stops accepting mail all together. I had been using sendmail, but an aliases.db coruption made me change. Although I re-installed sendmail it refused to work, therefore I had to get a mail server up, and Exim worked fine. But, I'm stuck on this problem. Wayne
woddy +PHP+ php-nuke
I had php-nuke up and running on Debian stable with php4. Because of another program I wanted to run, I had to upgrade to woody first it un-installed my php4, in dselect when I tried to re-install it it complains about the version of apache-commons...?(why?) so, I installed php3, but when I go to the website I get this error Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_connect() in mainfile.php on line 33 First I thought it may have to do with something else that upgraded, so I un-installed php3, mysql, and php-nuke. I re-installed the 3 from scratch, but I still get the error Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_connect() in mainfile.php on line 33 the section of mainfile.php is $mainfile = 1; mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuname, $dbpass); @mysql_select_db("$dbname") or die ("Unable to select database"); please help< before I pull my hair out! php4 and woody
Why that when I upgraded to woody did it un-install my php4? When I go to dselect now, it complains about apache, what's the deal? php3 installs fine, but now I can't get php3_mysql to connect to mysql correctly. wayne

Compile vs. Apt-get(was woody+php+php-nuke)
I have a question reguarding the debian process. I don't mind compiling packages on my own, but since I like using, and keeping my system up to date, using apt/deselect, I don't want to get away from that. So, if I compile some of the packages on my own, will that be recognized by apt/dselect? In other words if I complie php4 manually, then later on I use dselect to add a package that requires php4, will apt/dselect recognize that I already have it installed. Then lets say php4 is upgraded, will I be able to use apt/dselect to upgrade it even thouge the previous install was manually compiled. wayne
lwresd?
When I upgraded to woody one of the services that were installed was 'lwresd' What is that? Plus, now when I'm using dselect, it says that lwresd recommends libnss_lwres. But, libnss_lwres is unavailable. Is there a way to keep this from coming up? or, where can I get it to install? Wayne
O.T.-WebTV
My girlfriend bought me a Sony WebTV Terminal at a garage sale. It's a model INT-W150. So, I was wondering, is there anything I can do with the p.o.s. Can the thing be flashed, . Basically, has anyone figured out something to do with these things, besides a door stop, or a paper weight.
Sorry-O.T.-WebTV
Sorry, that was meant for a different list. If anyone has ideas, thank you. >My girlfriend bought me a Sony WebTV Terminal at a garage sale. question?
I don't want to start a flame war, BUT I've been working with Uinx since I was 12, now I'm 28. I've been a linux fan for about 3 years. I started with red hat, but when a friend told debian was tthe one, I started using it. and quickly learned the advantages of Debian. I feel i'm adaquet as a user. So , what is my next step? I thought it would be learning some programing. my problem is, there are so many languages out there. I tried to start with C, but couldn't get through the book. I started a project that used php and have become pretty good at it. My question is what programming language is best to learn?? Wayne

upgrade to sarge has sendmail rejecting mail
Yesterday I upgraded to sarge on my email server. Now suddenly and email sent to it gets sent back with ... while talking to zlabinc.com.: >>> RCPT To:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <<< 503 This mail server requires authentication. Please check your mail client settings. 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable Now my client settings have not changed, only the sendmail server(upgrade). And the funny thing is, this only happens to one domain, while there are 4 others that are having no problem, plus I don't even send out through that server I send out through roadrunner, and none of my other email accounts have that problem And to add to the problem, when I try to check the email from that account, it will not accept the password yet I can ftp and ssh into the box with this password. sendmail errors after upgrade to sarge
I'm having some errors after upgrading to sargs. For the most part sendmail seems to be working fine, but upon noticing that my mail queue was getting quite large, I had the following errors with the emails Cannot open hash database /etc/mail/aliases.db: Invalid argument and Cannot open hash database /etc/mail/mailertable.db: Invalid argument If I flush the mail queue all these mails are delivered. When i run newaliases I recieve no errors, but I still get the error on outgoing mail. DJ software
I am setting up a computer to play mp3's in a club. The DJ is used to using BPM-studio and Atomic. I would rather install Debian, than winblows, but am wondering if there is an equivalent program That I can use that doesn't have a high learning curve for him. Laptop touchpad clicking twice
I have Debian Sid installed on my laptop. Everything works fine except the touchpad. when I tap it once it registers a double-click. In the XFree86 config I have the mouse set to /dev/psaux and the PS/2 protocol. Where would be the config to look at for this, or how could I fix this? spamassassin rules question
I have been running spamassassin on my own server for quite a wile and been very happy with it. Recently I contracted with an ISP, and one of the things I have been passed with was to take over their spamassassin server. Like mine, they were a debian install with the generic ruleset that comes when installed with Debian, but their original sys admin updated their rulesets on several occassions. My question is, looking at my own rulesets I noticed the all the ruleset filenames start with numbers such as 10_misc.cf 20_dnsbl_tests.cf 20_html_tests.cf 20_ratware.cf25_hashcash.cf 30_text_fr.cf 60_whitelist.cf user_prefs.template 20_anti_ratware.cf 20_drugs.cf20_meta_tests.cf 20_uri_tests.cf 25_spf.cf 30_text_nl.cf 65_debian.cf 20_body_tests.cf20_fake_helo_tests.cf 20_phrases.cf 23_bayes.cf 25_uribl.cf 30_text_pl.cf languages 20_compensate.cf20_head_tests.cf 20_porn.cf 25_body_tests_es.cf 30_text_de.cf 50_scores.cf But upon looking at the rulesets on their server and on rulesemporium.com I noticed that most of the filenames start with 70 & 60...etc SO, my question is, what do the numbers signify? are they a level, or a release number or ? gaim/gtk themes
I'm running etch,KDE, and Gaim. Problem is the incomming messages window, the text is too small to read. I've changed the type of gtk theme, and even increased the font size. But it increases the font size for everything but the incoming messages window. does anyone know how to increase the font size on the incoming messages. I looked at Gaim's website and followed their direction on how to change it, but once again it increased the size for everything but the incoming message window. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Gaim and multiple ICQ accounts
Hi all, I'm running Debian Sid. A weird thing happened the other day after an update. I have accounts with all the different IM protocols, msn, yim, aim, gmail, icq, and have been running gaim just fine. I have 3 different ICQ accounts on there an have not had a problem. Had the same running under Kopete for a while and itøs fine. But the other day after an update, Gaim is trying to add all the contacts under each of the ICQ accounts to the other 2 accounts. In other words sent out requests to all contacts trying to add them to the other account so that all 3 have the same contacts. Iøv cancelecd the requests, Iøve deleted contacts, but the next time I log on it does the same. anyone know how to stop this and keep the 3 ICQ accounts seperate?
