I have an Asus laptop with the same problem. X and sis630 don't work very well together. The best way to do this is by recompiling the kernel and enable the framebuffer. Once that is done add to your lilo.conf vga=791 remember to run lilo before you reboot you should be able to 1025x768x32
and I'm running xXFree86 4.1.0 OH and use framebuffer driver not tie sis driver. Let me know if you have problems.
