Sarge "dist-upgrade" crashes during KDE
Hello, all. I hope that you can help me. While upgrading My Sarge machine this morning, I have got problems with a conflict during the process. apt-get complains that: /usr/lib/kde3/gsthumbnail.la already exists in kdebase-kio-plugins when trying to unpack kdegraphics-kfile-plugins As usual it recommended issuing "apt-get install -f" to resolve the issue. However this complained about the following packages: BEGIN: -- Preparing to replace kdelibs-bin 4:3.2.3-2 (using .../kdelibs-bin_4%3a3.3.1-4_i386.deb) ... Unpacking replacement kdelibs-bin ... Has anybody any ideas how I might resolve this, please? I've even tried "apt-get remove kdesktop" but that has the same complaints. If there is some very simple fix (even if it is just removing all of KDE to re-install - please tell me how. Thanks in advance. TreeBoy -- Stop searching forever. Do you mean NAS (Network Audio System) which is available on Debian now. I'm intending to try and sort this out for myself this very weekend. I'll post if you're interested. Re: Sound over X (was Re: X and sound on debian, really wanted!)
Hi, again. Managed to get it working (sort of!). I have a desktop machine that sits in another room because the flashing lights and the noisy fans would not be allowed into the living room. I have a laptop that I use all the time connected to the desktop. I run X on the desktop and view it's contents on the laptop with the following command; X -query desktop :1 I am not able to get to log in remotely using kdm. First of all, I had to install nas (the server package) on the laptop. Then I installed nas-bin (the client utils) on the desktop. I then had to change the /etc/default/nas file on the laptop to have the "-aa" option to allow unauthenticated connections. I was then able to run auinfo on the laptop's konsole and it said everything was fine. I was also able to execute the following on a remote konsole on the desktop (i.e. sat at the laptop in KDE on the desktop): auinfo -audio tcp/laptop:8000 and get the results I needed. When I then execute: audial -audio tcp/laptop:8000 -volume 50 0123 and get the tones come out of the laptop!!! Unfortunately, when I then tell KDE to use the NAS, I get segfaults - so it does not work. Next I'm going to look at ESD and then aRTS if that fails. Will let you know. However, it does not allow you to apply client-side filters to move mail directly into IMAP folders! I have to put into local folders first. However, that's not so bad when you consider I have over 50,000 in my Debian-User archive and over 30,000 in the Ubuntu-User archive. I really should delete both of these, but I'm interested in how this 800MHz Mini-ITX server scales: it can take 20 seconds to show the list of mail in Debian-User. I use Exim 4 Heavy+TLS with MailScanner using ClamAV with MySQL-hosted virtual users (only one real non-root user!), Courier-IMAP+SSL. Currently only a dozen accounts, but over 100,000 mails in total. It's also my firewall, has an apache admin suite and is my home DNS/DHCP server. I am writing documentation for this, and you will hopefully be able to find more info at the website for the charity that I work for. If anyone is interested, I shall post here when finished. Re: Sound over X
Having failed with NAS, here is what I have done with esound. esound was already installed (part of Gnome) on both the laptop and the desktop. First I have to configure the server on the laptop: I've changed the file /etc/esd.conf to show: [esd] auto_spawn=1 spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 5 spawn_wait_ms=100 # default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode default_options=-public -tcp -promiscuous The important bits here are the first and last lines. After this is done you start esd in the background by using: esd & I then installed esound-clients on the laptop and did: esdplay test.wav Got nothing! Ran alsamixer and unmuted, tried again: SUCCESS! So, I installed esound-clients on the desktop, ran the following command: esdplay -s laptop test.wav SUCCESS! Then I configured xmms on the desktop to use the eSound output and specified the hostname of my laptop as the destination. SUCCESS!!! I haven't yet found how to use esddsp, which I believe I need to use xine or whatever. I just get no noise at all and no error message - dagnabbit! Marvellous! I've always been somewhat daunted by the mplayer manual, so this piece of enlightenment is truly well received. I have to ask, though, how do I get SDL games to use this ESD server too? 3c59x driver woes with 2.6.8 kernel.
Hi. Sorry about the length of this, but I would rather give too much info than too little. I've been using Sarge for about a year with no problems at all. However, when playing with Ubuntu (very smart) I found that my Thinkpad T20 wouldn't get a network connection. The network card is 3Com 3c556B I initially thought that this was an Ubuntu compile problem, but (thankfully) I was wrong (again!). The correct module is loaded (3c59x) but I then get lots of error messages regarding commands not completing: ** BEGIN kernel: eth0: command 0x5800 did not complete! Status=0x kernel: eth0: command 0x2804 did not complete! Status=0x kernel: eth0: command 0x3002 did not complete! Status=0x ** END then, approximately every 10 seconds I get the following sequence: ** BEGIN kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, tx_status ff status . kernel: diagnostics: net media dma fifo kernel: eth0: Transmitter encountered 16 collisions -- network cable problem? kernel: eth0: Interrupt posted but not delivered -- IRQ blocked by another device? kernel: Flags; bus-master 1, dirty 0(0) current 16(0) kernel: Transmit list vs. cf59a200. kernel: eth0: command 0x3002 did not complete! (An aside, I have no floppy drive either, so I have no means of copying the log so I may have mis-typed the above, despite having checked it many times.) If I use the Sarge installer, I get a network with no problems at all. But upon reboot (with the 2.6.8-1 kernel) these problems occur. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, TreeBoy

I get exactly the same thing with some ad servers (Falkag kills me at www.theregister.co.uk) at some locations. This happens on LInux with Firefox or Windows with Firefox or IE. It appears to be a routing congestion issue and generally disappears after a while. I've just learned to live with it. As an aside: your browser does not "hang" - it just doesn't render - hanging is a very specific phrase. I apologise for my assumption. You are getting a different problem to me - I only experience this on my work Windows box where I have more than one anti-spoofing tool installed. This suggests that there may be a plugin problem that is hogging the process. IS it worth trying going through any of those ? If you try to browse to 192.168.0.100 you get the page you want to see. If you try to browse to an external site (e.g. www.someotherdomain.com) you also get a problem. If the above statements are true, I would suggest that your issue is in name resolution. Is your DNS definitely working ? Can you ping using names ? What hapens when you try to issue the command "host www.mydomain.com" ? Cheers, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: DNAT problem in Shorewall
I am now getting really confused. You have three machines in the subnet 192.168.0.0/24 They are: IPFQDN Description 1 ??? Linux Firewall/Gateway 100 www.mydomain.com Linux webserver running apache ? ??? XP box You are trying to browse http on www.mydomain.com. You have DNS working on all machines. i.e. running "host www.mydomain.com" (or ping on XP) on each computer gives the correct IP address of 192.168.0.100. If you point a web browser on *any* machine at http://192.168.0.100 you get your page as expected. If, on your webserver, you point your web browser at http://www.mydomain.com you get the correct webpage. If, on your firewall, you point your webbrowser at http://www.mydomain.com you get the correct webpage. If, on your XP box, you point your web browser at http://www.mydomain.com you get an IE error page about not found or some such. If these statements are correct, then your problem is with XP. If not, which of the above statements are wrong ? And how are they wrong ? For example, saying "doesn't show the page" does not say what the problem is. You must get some kind of error - please say what that is. Finally: Please reply to the list - not to me personally. These lists offer others the ability to learn and to add input. The developer of Shorewall really doesn't like doing what you are trying to do, but he does explain how to do it: http://shorewall.net/FAQ.htm#faq2 He would prefer that you connect your webserver to a thirdd network interface on your firewall which would then be called a De-Militarised Zone (or DMZ). I would recommend a Treo 600 if you have a choice. They are cheap because they are last year's model (they lack bluetooth, which is a bonus in my book) and they sync with all the standard Palm tools you find in Linux. The modems that I have direct experience of do not have ethernet - they've been models of the SpeedTouch USB modem (the 320 and the 330) If it is a SpeedTouch there is a user space driver (apt-get install speedtouch). Therre are hundreds of places around the web that explain how to do speedtouch and debian. Basically the modem behaves in a very similar fashion to a normal dial-up modem: i.e. you have to set up ppp. I have a small firewall with a SpeedTouch 330 connected so I can get the relevant details from that, although it was set up using Potato with a 320 originally! Re: demon usb modem [WAS: suggestions of uncapped Broadband >512Kbp in UK]
The instructions I followed were: http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/docs/sargehowto.html However, you do *not* need to do configure the kernel. You *do* need to "apt-get install speedtouch"! You do *NOT* need to install hotplug - 'cos it's already there. You *do* need to get the firmware! You do not need to install the hotplug script the "apt-get install speedtouch" inserts that for you. You need to configure PPPoA and create your /etc//peers/ file. I called mine "demon" and it looks like this: debug lcp-echo-interval 10 lcp-echo-failure 3 noipdefault defaultroute user "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" noauth noaccomp nopcomp noccp novj holdoff 4 persist maxfail 25 updetach #usepeerdns plugin pppoatm.so 0.38 Notice that I have commented out "usepeerdns" this is because of other parts of my setup. Next, you *do* need to setup chap-secrets and pap-secrets with your details. libatm1 should be installed as a dependency of speedtouch. That should be it - now just "Plug and Play"! Good luck. I posted a few bits and pieces about this to this list earlier this year. I ended up using esound and a good number of apps worked with it - but I couldn't get arts aware of it. If you are running anything other than stable, then you would be just asking for trouble. (Your signature implies that you are running testing.) However, I would presume that what you are really asking is "How do I find out what utilities are available to me to achieve this task?" The answer is to issue the command: apt-cache search apt cron This asks the package management system what tools include the words "apt" and "cron" in their name and/or description. Hope this helps. I too use Demon and have the situation that you expect and observe with Tangent Research. The situation is that they register two different hosts: * mydomain.demon.co.uk * www.mydomain.demon.co.uk The latter is on their web servers and the former is your ADSL end point. The reason you are not seeing an repalced index file may be because you are using Apache 2. If this is the case, then you want to replace the index file in /var/www/apache2-default or set up you own default instead. Hope this helps, TreeBoy As an aside: I've just got back from NI today! The root for your server should be specified in your config file /etc/apache/httpd.conf By default this is /var/www There should also be a matching entry for this directory that specifies that indexes are allowed and what file. Later in the file you should find a entry that specifies what file names are used for indexes and what order they are sought. The file does not need to be owned by www-data, but they must be readable by that user. If these appear to be OK, then I suggest searching for the relevant text in the files in /var/www (Hopefully not teaching you to suck eggs:) You do this quickly by issuing the following command. grep -rl "Text I see in my Web Page." /var/www/* or you can do it case-insensitively: grep -ril "Text I see in my Web Page." /var/www/* The "r" means recursively and the "l" (ell) means only show me the filenames of the matching files - do not show me the individual lines. If this doesn't help, then we may have to look at what hosts (virtual and otherwise) you may have configured. Keep on trying Cheers, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
