dhcp problem
Hi, I just can not use DHCP on my Linux box. My kernel is 2.2.9 I get the following error: dhcpcd[1158]: ioctl SIOCSIFBRDADDR (ifConfig): Cannot assign requested address since it was giving me this, I tried option -r, does not work either... As an example, strace dhcpcd -r -d gives me this: socket(PF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_IP) = 3 ioctl(3, SIOCGIFHWADDR, 0xbcdc) = 0 ioctl(3, SIOCSIFADDR, 0xbcdc) = 0 ioctl(3, SIOCSIFBRDADDR, 0xbcdc)= -1 EADDRNOTAVAIL (Cannot assign requested address) write(2, "ioctl SIOCSIFBRDADDR (ifConfig):"..., 65ioctl SIOCSIFBRDADDR (ifConfig): Cannot assign requested address ) = 65 BTW, my network card works fine, I can do networking with a computer on the same hub if I set the IP address by hand using ifconfig ... Bu it put the mess on the rest of the network sometimes since it can bring ip conflicts, and other computers can not access mine. I tried the dhcp package from slink, and then from potato The last package I tested is dhcpcd 1.3.17pl2-1 (potato) I tried both packages (slink, potato), with or without option -r on kernel 2.0.36 and 2.2.9. I read the DHCPD mini-HOWTO and had a look to /usr/doc/dhcpcd, ... nothing helped I did a 'man ioctl_list' to see if I could get a clue (what is SIOCSIFBRDADDR about ?), and I did not. So, I am kind of desperate... Can some one help me please ? I really need to use the network, and for the moment, I have to switch back to windoze to do so. Please, CC me in the answer, since I am not on this list. Cheers, vdb

spam on debian lists (Re: Program Submission)
What's the deal with spam? I mean, on the mailing list signup page, there's a message about an automatic $1000 fee for spam; does SPI ever actually collect on this? NEW USER - mainframe connection
Can Linux connect to a IBM Mainframe - on windows I use software that has something called "TN3270" or a IRMA gateway allows me to connect via a VT100 like terminal. What package would work for this - it does not seem to be listed in the package descriptions.

ok, First let me say that I do NOT use lilo so don't tell me edit lilo.conf. I boot with loadlin, have 128mb of RAM but Linux sees only 64mb of it. Netscape always does weird crap like that. Usually, if I swith virtual desktops it works again. Give it a try. Other than that all u can do is kill netscape and run it again. Stomix's ftp (ftp.stormix.com) had 4.6 but its not any more stable than previous versions. Also, there are a lot of window managers that use a lot less resources than KDE. I use WindowMaker. If you use KDE, you always have the option of using it's file manager (kfm) as a web browser. It's pretty speedy. I've heard that this was a commom Debian problem but I"ve never experienced it before. When in X my backspace key deletes to the right of the cursor instead of the left. You didn't compile sound support into the kernel did you? Also, this kernel doesn't work if you are using a kernel with SMP enabled. For the driver to work sound support has to be compiled as a module (soudcore.o) and SMP has to be disabled. ~Sam On 6 Apr 2000, Joachim Trinkwitz wrote: > sam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > > Go to this site and download the source for the sblive kernel module > > (emu10k1) http://opensource.creative.com/ > > > > Once that is compiled, cp it to /lib/modules/kernelversion#here/misc/ > > Thanks, but compiling fails with: > > "Please run make dep in your kernel source tree modversions.h is > missing" > > After make dep the same thing happens. mouse problems after switching to Woody
Rather than go into a lot of detail on my problems, I would prefer to get a reliable reference to a comprehensive discussion about the installation and trouble shooting of mice. I am currently using Woody (Debian 3.0), a ps/2 modem, AMD 500 Mhz cpu -- in other words, nothing very unusual or fancy. If no good reference exists, can some computer science or engineering instructor suggest this topic to one of their more adventurous students as a term project, or even as a Masters thesis. By the way, I don't understand why many exchanges on the Debian lists refer to unpredictable mouse problems from unknown sources: Are mice and their software really stochastic machines, or are those people merely as ignorant as I am (which is very)? Thanks for any help. sam

What do folks use to mirror repositories
That's pretty much it. I want to mirror all my updates to a single server on my LAN and have everything on my LAN apt update from it. This seems more efficient than having everyone download their own copies. Google told me to use apt-mirror. My updates repository turned out to have some metadata filename with an @ in it, apt-mirror refuses to do anything with this state of affairs. I learned (after poking apt-mirror's page( that this bug was two years old, but the project is not maintained any more. Digging through aptly-mirror's bug tracker I caught a reference to aptly. I got aptly to work, after applying a reasonable amount of elbow grease. The only unsolvable problem was that after taking a few seconds to download a handful of updates it takes aptly well over an hour to republish the local repository snapshot, to incorporate those updates. The full repository adds up to about 18000 packages, and looks like aptly recompresses each one of them, every time. I don't know why but that's what it does. I see it launching xz over and over again, while aptly keeps me in the loop of how many of those 18000 packages are left to process. Although I don't need to worry about wearing any SSDs (since it's spinning rust), this is still somewhat suboptimal. So, that brings me to: what do folks use to mirror repositories? pgpqL38pnY_vQ.pgp Description: PGP signature
Understanding the two-year release cycle as a desktop user (and a Debian newcomer)
Hello, I would like to hear opinions about the release cycle of the Stable Debian releases for a Desktop user. I love the Debian ideals and perks (its social contract, independence from big companies...) and understand to a certain extent the fundamentals on why keeping "old-ish" versions of packages with backports and the Shiny new stuff syndrome, but I fail to see how Debian can make a useful desktop distribution with the current release cycle. For example: My main PC is an already two years old ryzen-based system and a Vega graphics card from 2017, and the kernel used in Stable has regressions which cause complete, unrecoverable system hangups on Vega cards which were not alleviated until kernel 5.3 onwards (and they still keep happening, though rarely!). This means that to ensure stability on a Debian installation I would need a backported kernel, or use Debian Testing or Sid, which IMO collides with the point of a Stable release. I also see everyday many announcements about performance (GNOME) and usability (KDE Plasma) improvements which are not exactly new features. This is obviously happening on more recent releases, which Debian may not see (unless these changes are also backported, which I would find extremely cumbersome?) until approximately two years have passed since that. All this makes me think that while Debian is a fantastic distribution, its Desktop, common user-facing side of things would greatly benefit from something like a separate yearly Stable release. Thanks, Sam
Re: Re: Understanding the two-year release cycle as a desktop user (and a Debian newcomer)
Thanks for your points of view! I agree that Stable comes at a cost, and of course if I ever were to set up a server Debian would probably be my choice. Regarding derivatives, I know about Ubuntu, Mint, etc., but I don't exactly like distributions tied to or ultimately dependant on commercial entities (I want a change of air after going through Ubuntu, openSUSE...) I have also seen independent Debian derivatives (MX Linux comes to mind), but they either used backports or the Testing distribution. I would happily consider using Debian Testing for example, but wherever I see someone asking about it I always find someone discouraging from using it due to the possibility of having broken or unsecure packages for a long time due to it being automated. Is it actually usable for a Workstation? The same would apply to Sid, I can no longer allow myself to fix big breakages after broken updates (I don't know if that really happens often in Sid) Thanks, Sam
Re: Re: Re: Understanding the two-year release cycle as a desktop user (and a Debian newcomer)
Thank you very much for the tips! I will give Testing a spin and will definitely take another look at the Debian derivatives. You also made me admire the Debian community, so that's a big plus on the reasons-why-I-definitely-need-to-switch-to-Debian list :) Thank you, Sam

Installing a promise ata 66 pci ide card
Hi all and thanks in advance, I have reached a storage conundrum, i have a dual p3 server 1gbit ram running off a 9 gig scsi as well as 4 ide hdd's totalling 1.5Terabytes. The problem is: I cannot afford scsi drives and i have used up all 4 ide slots. I am trying to plan for expansion, I happen to have a promise ultra ata 66 pci card with two ide slots. My question being what is necessary to install this promise card? I tried googling but there was nothing but "debian not recognizing hard disks, using promise card" etc, nothing about installing the card on a boxen that already has debian on it. As a side note, if anyone has any other suggestions for expansion, feel free to field them, as I am not set in my ways ;) Thanks, Sam

Re: Why ext3 doesn't need defragmentation ?
Hi Kamaraju, I am also not an expert in filesystems, however, I do know that the new native linux fs ext3 has what is called "journaling". Linux keeps track of where everything goes, so it doesnt get disorganized. Once in a while you could run fsck if your really concerned about it. yet without erasing the source code or lying about how it works either, perhaps the software bits are the key to not cash but to make mroe physical goods via cnc... yet the point, is that the web site with the gnu/debian is not very user friendly, nor specific in intent... how about a nice little 'meta app p2p' client, like an app store, with some 'packages' for jobs like farmer, or assault cuber ;p, along with solid network p2p options to share the bits and the information, and perahps coordinate the physical goods there too, for we can't really look around here ? why doesn't google maps zoom in further or have infared or the other color direction ? and why are the games all so similar, battlefield 3 like 2 like 42, with more cheaters too option b , perhaps, is the distro cds, that boot and run ez mode and do 'something useful' even with bad hardware, maybe on a car too, or in cnc, and the open source hardware? with the woven nanowires ? you build it with 3d printing and cnc, both blocked by the copyright on physical shapes, like gears from the watermill that spun the great clutch wire system of rome and are also in cars. on a side note, guns are those too, the power is really just compressed fuel and air true
Re: a balance: hi speed internet vs. remoteness
also could use bluetooth and a 4+ lens telescope, or perhaps a series of wireless relays to an actual internet connection, including powerful extended antennaes from power supps too, just make an incision upon research done, where the tiny antennae is, then add, since it does fluctuate like ac current and a line shape is the most intuiteive, and works, then it comes off the line in a ring and then a chain of light rings forms into the beam, and expands into the light, fluctuating in color as per visible light at watts of bright, shifted to the right in color (mostly also to the other) therefore between the sender and receiver, perhaps uipon 'xray' bulb if you have a wall of meat between you it's not a big deal, but a wall of metal paper perhaps lol metal paper is strong ? foil is paper , paper is thick they don't appreate you , and are the atheists that to you are actually something else entirely philistines http://aersixb9x.wordpress.com fuel and air in the gun already is true and now lasers of chains? what more is there fore you tooo
No response at all about the courts or shit too
You know what I thinik ? they say my story isn't 'realistic' i bet, and therefore not true, but what kind of crimial liar tells a story that sounds untrue in such a way if they can choose to? or option b you know maybe too, would have found already if you were willing to talk to me after stabbing me and calling me a killer when i was not too, then you all walk away and say instead of sorry or how i can get food, we didn't get proof on accident but we have a burden too, and yeah you cannot sue even if we slashed you, and then later they say 'yeah right liar i don't trust you sex offender ' since i did get it slashed despite not being guilty at all, and then when asked they had erased the records and lied to all, so then people would ask and i would say true, and then the cops would say no record is he from out of town too?
All chucks friends use em too, i saw stephen shoot up heroin near bear valley too
drinkin and drivin is shit you all do, and lying and stabbing you know of is true kidnapping and covering and perjury too please you wanna talk about crimes or are you the problem entirely or a part of it too? seriously what is it i am suppoesd to do ? the court date approaches and no property or lawyer too, all you can see is 'drugs drugs drugs' i do, you use them too entirely too, but you ain't getting attacked and tortured and that is why too who else you all know that i know uses drugs too? or are you nothing but liars since you claimt to not smoke marijauna to me often too? You never responded so here's what i do, usin the blank not the b because you know now too, how about an actual discussion or debate one time too, since i get no trials but hey they are faggotry and treasons too , no laws are here now as far as i knew, the laws are bullshit entirely too
The last time i got tortured...when the torture started ?
Was when i went there and spoke to the criminals, and complained that no 'actual ' criminals were getting arrested in a pouplar way ?
I guess I should not go to the court as per chuck strelitz's suggestion
He said they told him i didn't have to go, and obviously should not lest i be tortured or killed for speaking my mind there again i suppose i should acknoledge no laws but martial status henceforth until reassured

Switching to console mode from X problem almost solved
Several weeks ago I sent an email concerning my inability to switch from X windows to the virtual console using Ctrl+Alt+F1. I own a Viewsonic P810 21" monitor and an S3 Trio 2D/4X video adapter. It appears that the problem is cause the use of the wrong X server: when I started using xserver-svga instead of xserver-xfree86, the problem disappeared. I hope this is a helpful hint for other users who experienced the same problem I did. There is however, one unexplained problem: I have 8 MB of RAM on the adapter (according to Windows 98), but Linux-based probing software can only detect 4 Mb. Furthermore, when I set up X to use all 8192 Kb of ram on the card (using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-svga), my sprite turns into a usually white square. When I tell X to use only 4096 Kb of ram, the problem is solved, but the card cannot handle high refresh rates. Any ideas?
re: The LAN interface on my server stops being able to seethe LAN intermittantly.
I am having a network issue with my Debian server which I've never seen with any other Distro I've tried to use as my server box. I'd really like to get it fixed because Debian is by FAR the best for this application. What happens is that the gateway Intermittantly (Randomly, but at least once every hour or so) stops being able to send data to local machines (the ones its sharing Internet to). Basically the client machines can ping the server itself fine, but if they try to ping anything OUTSIDE the network (on the Internet) they get: C:\> ping 192.231.203.132 Pinging 192.231.203.132 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.1 : Destination net unreachable. Reply from 192.168.1.1 : Destination net unreachable. Reply from 192.168.1.1 : Destination net unreachable. Reply from 192.168.1.1 : Destination net unreachable. Also during this time if I try to ping FROM the server to the clients it just gets no response. I've tried now with three different LAN cards (Different brands and chipsets) and it happens with all of them. The problem happens every couple of hours and isnt affecting the connection to the Internet (the server can ping stuff on the Internet via its PPPoE connection with no problems whatsoever). I've also tried upgrading to the latest kernel version and it seemed to fix it for 24hours, but on reboot its started again. I'll try to provide ANY other info possible if more is needed. I really hope I can get this issue sorted soon Thanks, Sam. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The provider, no matter who, tries to put you through the wringer by over-charging for a modem and line splitter so if you've got any sense you buy your own and just pay for enabling your phone line. I bought an ethernet modem to $A150 - my ISP was offering this for $A225. I bought a splitter for $A10 - the ISP was offering it for $A15. My own connection was set up using ppoeconf. I'm trying to set up for a friend who has bought a D-Link DSL-200 USB modem which he was told would work under Linux - hence my queries. DNS BIND 9.2.1 enabling dynamic updates
I am getting a strange error message when trying to implement DNS. I installed Woody on my S/390. I am running BIND 9.2.1. I can set up a slave zone and it works. I can promote the slave to a master and it works. But as soon as I try to allow updates or allow queries, even from 127.0.0.1, I get the following message in my /var/log/daemon.log: Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25320]: starting BIND 9.2.1 Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25320]: using 2 CPUs Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: loading configuration from '/etc/bind/n amed.conf' Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: no IPv6 interfaces found Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: listening on IPv4 interface lo, 127.0.0 .1#53 Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: listening on IPv4 interface ctc0, 192.1 68.131.14#53 Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: parser.c:1269: REQUIRE(tupleobj != ((vo id *)0) && tupleobj->type->rep == &cfg_rep_tuple) failed Sep 17 10:31:38 lnxa140 named[25322]: exiting (due to assertion failure) Here is my named.conf file when it is working minus comments: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; query-source address * port 53; forwarders { 10.10.1.122; }; auth-nxdomain no;# conform to RFC1035 }; zone "." { type hint; file "/etc/bind/db.root"; }; zone "localhost" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.local"; }; zone "127.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.127"; }; zone "0.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.0"; }; zone "255.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.255"; }; zone "winnebagoind.com" { type master; file "/var/cache/bind/winnebagoind.com.hosts"; }; Here it is again when I add the updates and it fails: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; query-source address * port 53; forwarders { 10.10.1.122; }; auth-nxdomain no;# conform to RFC1035 }; zone "." { type hint; file "/etc/bind/db.root"; }; zone "localhost" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.local"; }; zone "127.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.127"; }; zone "0.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.0"; }; zone "255.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.255"; }; zone "winnebagoind.com" { type master; file "/var/cache/bind/winnebagoind.com.hosts"; allow-update { 10.10.1.23; }; }; Anyone have any ideas why this isn't working or what the error message means? DNS BIND 9.2.1 enabling dynamic updates
I think I found what my problem was. Somehow I think DNS installed without getting two required libraries. I decided to try updating to 9.2.2 and it upgraded 1 package and installed 2 new packages. I think these new ones should have already been there. Anyway, after the upgrade to 9.2.2 and regenerating the name.conf file, the problem is no longer occurring. Thanks! LPRng
I have Debian running on my s/390. I have LPRng serving printers to a variety of different clients. My mainframe prints lpd to the server, my windows NT/95/98 clients print samba to the server, and my 2000/XP clients print lpd. I started out with a few printers as a test and now I am adding printers. In the end, we will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 160 printers on this server. I want to do some performance and statistic tracking, i.e. number of print jobs total and possibly broken down by printer, memory usage, processor usage, retries, etc. Does anyone know if there is a way to do that in LPRng? Or is there an add-on for doing that? Thanks! Sam Warren, Jr. Computer Technician Winnebago Industries 641-585-3535 ext. 7785 <>

Fetchmail doesn't fetch
My command of "fetchmail" yields an index of messages which hangs and then after it times out (300 sec), gives the reason for the error as "7". ?The manpage says this condition (fetchmail timing out) can occur "while waiting for the server." I am using linux 2.2.20, debian woody, exim, and mutt -- service by dialup to ISP. The mail service worked find until I started playing around with some not-very-esoteric aspects of the software. (Unfortunately, I do not remember all that I did, except that I did make some changes as root (what hubris!). Some extracts from http://web.cuug.ab.ca/~leblancj/nt_to_unix.html may be pertinent here: Engineers and developers recruited from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) brought excellent VMS-based expertise into the Microsoft fold. Dave Cutler, considered the "father" of NT and perhaps the key developer of DEC's VMS OS, had been working at DEC on a new OS, code-named "Mica", meant to be a successor to VMS. DEC's highest management were troubled that Cutler was approaching the design from a hardware platform-neutral operating stance. Central to the Mica design was the concept of the "Hardware Abstraction Layer" (HAL) that offered a uniform software platform regardless of the underlying computer machinery. In retrospect, and somewhat ironically, HAL was a foreshadowing of Sun's Java platform, which has as its main goal the equal functioning across disparate hardware architectures and which Microsoft has fought an ongoing crusade against. Doubly ironically, in a feat of twisted logic, Microsoft has subsequently cloned Java into their own "C#" platform (a crippled Java-clone running only on Microsoft Windows). DEC executives, worrying that their proprietary hardware-derived revenue would suffer as Mica was potentially adapted by non-DEC hardware vendors, terminated the Mica project. Cutler, now adrift, was quickly integrated into Microsoft and began work on the Windows NT project in 1988. Amid suspicions of intellectual property theft, DEC eventually sued Microsoft, citing that Cutler and his Mica team had actually continued the same project within Microsoft, culminating in the birth of the Windows NT OS. After Microsoft settled the case with DEC for $150 million, inside sources alleged that large quantities of NT's code (and even most of the programmer's comments) were identical to Mica's. I have been running a Debian workstation on a LAN (server hosts a web site and also acts as a mail server) from August 2000. There are two Windows boxes on the LAN. No viruses at all - the server runs Debian and exim's system filter has caught them all. The two Windows boxes have anti-virus software installed but nothing has ever got through the Debian server - yet. Getting Gnome to run on testing
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 How does one get Gnome 2.2 to run on testing with its default window manager? I've done the necessary downloads (at least I believe so) but when I add the gnome-session option in my .xsession file and run startx I get Gnome running with blackbox. Updating to new kernel from 2.4.18-bf2.4
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 This is one of the doh! type questions but please bear with me. I have a box running Woody with the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel. After the advisory yesterday, I downloaded the recommended kernel-image. Then I realised that I can't use this because it would not have the specific modules I need compiled in. The only source I can find in the cache for my Woody box is 2.4.18 which is source for the kernel currently being used on that box. Can I use either the 2.4.19 source or the 2.4.20 source instead (both of which are available in testing) and do a recompile? Or will these not work properly with Woody?
