I fully agree. Now we just need to convince Mr. Richie of that. His
e-mail address is: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't think we'll get very far, and I am not the one to do it, since I
am not experienced enough with properly building Debian packages that I
can engage in a technical discussion about it.

I misquoted the first time, it doesn't say the package has changed, it
said Debian changed.

Actually, I am using the wine debs for Dapper right now, on Etch.
They install fine and Wine seems to work correctly.

And to get back to the original question:

hi, i've been reading about wine (cedega and cxOffice also) the question
is, which of those packages is better, and why (im interested basicly in
some windows games)

Transgaming's commitment to Open Source has been questioned,
and in any case, Wine is getting so good that I no longer see the need
to use Cedega, even for games. However, my gaming needs are fairly
minor, mostly StarCraft and Civilization III. I would suggest trying your
games with Wine and then trying Cedega if needed.

also, id like to know the difference between wine from debian and wine
from wineHQ

The Wine packages in Debian testing are somewhat older than the
WineHQ release and Wine packages in Debian stable are not updated
and end up very out of date.

If you can use the provided Ubuntu debs you will be up to date with the
current Wine release.

It sounds like you are installing Stumble with the Debian package. If so,
try purging the Debian package and then reinstalling. If that doesn't work,
purge it again and try installing from addons.mozilla.org.

Also, the ExtentionUninstaller API and the Extension Manager extension

I understand that the interface is faster and cleaner from a physical

Those are external tabs, which I believe Fluxbox had a long time

To switch back to internal tabs, bring up the menu and select

Further to these issues, I've now noticed that on switching
windows, the first keypress is ignored. e.g., when I switch into an
xterm window and press enter, nothing happens. Hitting enter again
produces the normal result. I've noticed this same behaviour with
emacs, and it seems to affect every key - the first key press is
ignored.

Any suggestions as to what's going on? This is kind of frustrating as
it introduces typos into commands when I jump to an xterm.

Thanks,

Tyler

I don't think I can help with that problem. I am not seeing here (sid,
fluxbox 1.0~rc3-2), and it sounds like an actual bug not a config
setting. Does this happen when switching to other windows besides
xterms (text editor, etc)?

I think this has to do with the use of HTML entities (ä)
instead of actual UTF-8 characters. An additional possible issue
is that the web page may not be UTF-8.

When I want to fix up an html page before printing it, I use a
WYSIWYG html editor (I use vim when writing my own html).
SeaMonkey Composer / Nvu / KompoZer (which are basically
all the same program in different forms) have worked well for
me.

Evince uses poppler, which was forked from xpdf quite some time ago.
Kpdf upstream uses xpdf, but some distros hacked it to use poppler
(I'm not sure if Debian did or not). I believe xpdf development is mostly
dead.

Okular, the KDE 4 universal viewer, will use poppler for pdfs.

If you have a WRT54GL, and you want to use custom firmware, you
probably should use one of the disros designed specifically for it:

I have never heard of freesco, and it seems to use kernel 2.0.39!

The one relevant package for 4965 seems to be "firmware-iwlwifi"
(from non-free). With linux-image-2.6.22-1-k7, I can "modprobe mac80211".
It looks like maybe the iwl4965 driver is not in the mainline kernel and does
not have a debian package at this time.

http://intellinuxwireless.org/index.php?n=Downloads does not list a
package for debian. You may have to compile it or wait a while.

Etch had a lot of major changes. Sarge had kernel 2.4 or 2.6, Etch
had just 2.6. Sarge had Xfree86 (X11R6), Etch had Xorg (X11R7).
Sarge had GCC 3.x while Etch uses 4.x. Etch has D-bus 1.0.x,
Sarge had 0.23 or some such. Oh, and Etch has the new installer.

Anyway, the changes between Etch and Lenny will not be nearly
as large as the changes between Sarge and Etch. Lenny will still
have GCC 4.x, Xorg 7.x, kernel 2.6.x, etc (minor version updates).

I agree with this. I have never done a full Debian -> Ubuntu or
Ubuntu -> Debian transition, but I have often pulled in one or two
packages from the other distro.

My main machine is currently Sid, with Gnome, GTK and hplip
packages from Ubuntu's dev version. In the past I have installed
large numbers of packages from Ubuntu, and then gradually
moved back to pure Debian as the Debian packages caught up
or passed the Ubuntu versions.

You have to know what you are doing regarding resolving
dependency conflicts (aptitude's ncurses interface being
invaluable for this), but it is definitely possible.

You could just install kcontrol; it looks like it only depends on a couple
of things that kopete doesn't.

Otherwise, try opening ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
There should be an entry like this:

Change that to firefox and hopefully you will be ready to go.

I'm going to be a real stinker here and offer my guess: never. My first

the default JVM in Linux, Debian included." But then I quickly returned to
reality and remembered the whole trademark and DFSG thing. While Sun
released the *code* as GPL, I'm sure to be called Java, it will have to
follow certain parameters. If that simply means passing a test suite, then
including it in Debian might be possible, but if it means Sun approving all
the patches, approving binaries, etc, then we'll probably end up with
IcedLatte, or some such "almost Java" package.

But...I could be wrong, and honestly do hope I am.

Replying to myself here...

I forgot about the Java "Coffee cup" logo, and I can't find any new info on it.

This page: http://logos.sun.com/logosite.jsp?Category=third
indicates that there are some restrictions on the logo, but it also lists
Duke, so it clearly hasn't been updated.

Currently the trademark use guidelines say you must include the logo:

So I guess that aspect is still unknown, but the freeing of Duke gives me
hope that Sun will be reasonable (and hopefully for DFSG values of
"reasonable").

to the Sun product) are not permitted in the absence of a written agreement
with Sun.

If I understand that correctly, the question is if the logo is DFSG free.
If it is not, Debian would have to remove it, but that seems to not be
allowed by the trademark use guidelines.

If the logo is not free now, maybe they will make it free, or maybe they
will change the trademark requirements. I don't know anything about
code review requirements or lack thereof.

I expect a lively debate on debian-legal sometime between now and March :-)
(and maybe on past March as well)

You don't have to do that anymore. Just add non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://debian.oregonstate.edu/debian/ testing non-free

(with your mirror and version)

then update your package list and look for the sun-java packages.

I have experienced somewhat similar freezes in Unstable. The
differences are that I am using SeaMonkey 2.0a1pre (Nightlies)
for web browsing, I have never managed even a VT switch and
I am using Fluxbox. Oh, and I don't use a session manager
(GDM, etc). This has happened at least six times.

I know the Font refcount thing is not related because it always
says that when I exit X.

With such a hard freeze, that happens so sporadically, I feel
(as a non-programmer) helpless to try to figure it out.

Sorry I can't help.

I don't have any power management going on, and it seems like
the freeze is harder - ctrl-alt-backspace and C-A-D have no effect
at all, even after remotely killing SeaMonkey (no window selection,
either). And remotely killing X doesn't change any thing either.
Sometime the power button "soft off" (clean shutdown) works but
once only "hard off" worked.

I the past I have encountered freezes that could be solved by
C-A-BS or by remotely killing the process, but I have only had
this harder freeze since around the time etch went stable.

AltGr on Japanese keyboard

2007-09-18 Thread Kelly Clowers
I recently got a Japanese keyboard. With a little googling
I got it working (and set up scim, but that's another matter).

However, I am unable to get AltGr aka ISO_Level3_Shift
working. LWin as compose works, and xev shows that
ralt produces "ISO_Level3_Shift", but when I type ralt+
[other key], I only get [other key].

Here is part of my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Elecom Japanese Keyboard "
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "jp106"
Option "XkbLayout" "jp"
Option "XkbVariant""OADG109A" # correct yen symbol
Option "XkbOptions""lv3:ralt_switch,compose:lwin"
EndSection

I am running sid and just updated to xorg 7.3 (I didn't try
7.2 with this setup).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Kelly

I used Aptitude on testing for several years and now I am using it on unstable.

I didn't use setxkbmap, but I applied the same idea to xorg.conf,
and it works:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Elecom Japanese Keyboard "
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "jp106"
Option "XkbLayout" "jp,us"
Option "XkbVariant""OADG109A,intl" # correct yen symbol
Option "XkbOptions"
"lv3:ralt_switch,compose:lwin,grp:shift_toggle"
EndSection

The only thing is that in us intl mode, the keys map in a weird
combination of jp106/JP and pc105/US.

the ^ ~ key produces = + (as the key in that position would with pc105/US)
but the ¥ | key still produces ¥ | (I guess because there is no equivalent
on a pc105/US keyboard).

Anyway, this should be good enough, since I don't need the AltGr
symbols very often.

Thanks for the tip.

This should work fairly well. I have these lines in my .vimrc:

autocmd BufReadPre *.pdf set ro
autocmd BufReadPost *.pdf silent %!pdftotext -nopgbrk "%" - |fmt -csw7

and I can read most PDFs I have with vim.

My first thought is encoding issues. What is the output of "locale"?
Possibly related - Do you use plain rxvt or urxvt aka rxvt-unicode?

I am not sure I am on the right track, but I am thinking maybe you
previously used a different language encoding, such as iso-8859-1,
instead of UTF-8 (I am not sure what Sarge defaulted to). Do you
have any idea if this is the case?

In any case, my understanding is that aterm and (plain) rxvt do not
handle Unicode (UTF-8) well.

The Freshmeat aterm site says:

So my advise would be to install "rxvt-unicode" or "rxvt-unicode-lite"
or "rxvt-unicode-ml" (multilingual), depending on your needs. If it
displays the man pages correctly, then encoding was the problem,
and you can use urxvt instead of aterm or rxvt.

Let me know if this works. Otherwise, we can look at other possibilities.

I have Ekiga installed in sid; right at the moment there is an

It may be this xorg freezing problem that some people have been
having. Can do a remote login? If so does everything seem to work
alright in the new session?

There was some discussion related to this on the list[1] a while back

If a card is supported, it shouldn't matter if it is AGP or PCIe, just as
with older cards, it does not matter if they are PCI or AGP.

I have not really heard anything about using FireGL cards, but if they
use the same chips as the consumer cards, I guess they should work.

http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon is probably the best place
to see what is supported.

AMD recently began releasing specs for ATI cards, and is working
with Open Source devs to create good drivers for all modern ATI
card, but it will be a while before there are results for end users.

In X it is ctrl-alt-F?. On the consoles it is just alt-F?

Well, I don't have any direct experience with PCIe, but my understanding

Do you want to see the current version number of the packages and the
new version number? You can see that by using aptitude in interactive
mode (invoke "aptitude" instead of "aptitude upgrade").

If you mean you want to see what changes have been made to the
packages, check out apt-listchanges.

There is a huge difference between that server card and
a desktop card.

Unless you need a card for a big corporate server (do you?),
you probably don't want that card. It has 4 Ethernet ports
and some type of off loading, which is totally unnecessary
on a desktop. Oh, and it costs hundreds of dollars.

SeaMonkey aka Iceape aka Mozilla will not have session restore until
SeaMonkey 2.0 comes out, with much of the Firefox code branch
merged back in (2.0 is currently in alpha but usable (using it right now)).

I have been using the 2.0 alpha for a while now so it is hard to
remember how robust the stable version should be, but it should
definitely handle ~40 tabs. I start with almost 20 tabs open and
I average 25-35, using the same instance for several days. When
I browse certain image boards, or start researching something I
often temporarily go over 50 tabs, and sometimes nearly 100
(usually spread over several windows).

With the 2.0 alphas going over about 40 windows is dangerous
(I have been getting some crashes with just a few tabs, but it is
alpha). The last stable build I used was good for ~50 before
beginning to creak. Any time I have 60+ windows open, I restart
Moz as soon as I am finished researching or whatever.

I have always found Mozilla to be slightly more stable than
Firefox, but either one should now be able to handle ~40
windows. I don't really pay attention to how much ram Moz
eats, but I only have 512 (X11+Fluxbox and Amarok being
my other big apps).

I completely agree with the proposal to purge and reinstall,
and to make a new profile - it can make all the difference
in the world.

I also suggest Ad Block or Ad Block Plus and perhaps
NoScript (it is very annoying until you turn off the alerts
and teach it your main sites, then it is very good). A huge
amount of instability seems to come from ads, ad scripts
and ads that use plugins.

Also, are you using plugins other than Flash and Java?
If you are using media player plugins or in-browser pdf,
you might try it without those plugins, as they tend to
cause a lot of trouble in my experience.

Jumping into the conversation late here, but I would try purging
xprt and xprt-common with one command:
"dpkg --purge xprt xprt-common"
Try reversing the order or adding more related packages if needed.

I think you could also use the "--force-depends" option:
"dpkg --purge --force-depends xprt xprt-common"

Double check that there is not anything weird in your X11R6/bin/
directory. I had problems because Opera left something in there
even when I uninstalled it (the entire X11R6 dir will be going away).

"This" being the idea that gmail has no way to detect that this
is a mailing list. There are a number of headers in each message
that show that this a mailing list and that the address is
debian-user@lists.debian.org:

X-Mailing-List: archive/latest/500826
X-Loop: debian-user@lists.debian.org
List-Id:
List-Post:
List-Help:
List-Subscribe:
List-Unsubscribe:

Precedence: list

Based on this gmail could add a "reply to list button", and if there
was a situation that required CCing, you could still use "reply to all".
A number of the better MUAs work like this.

That's the problem. There is a "reply" button and a "reply to all".
If you press "reply", you get only a "To:" field with the individual
address filled in. If you press "reply to all", you get a "To:" field
with the individual address and a "Cc:" field with the list address.

You have to cut and paste the list address from "Cc:" to "To:" and
delete the individual address.

I agree on that.

On topic: Bret, did you get a chance to reinstall and try a new
profile? I think that should help, or at least eliminate what I
think is the most likely problem.

I don't think bind is set up to even do caching out of the box, but I
could be wrong. You can use the command line utility dig to see what
your name server is doing. See dig's manual page for more info.

I'm not so good at dns, but that looks good. I think you do have a working
caching name server.

For dig try:
"dig @127.0.0.1 cbc.ca"

The @ sign means use the dns server at the following address.
The next argument is what record to look up.

It is most likely due to udev. Udev does weird things to network card names.
Try using eth1 or possibly eth2. If those do not work, it may be another issue.

Scim is working for me in kde/qt apps. Here are my environmental
variables:

XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"
XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
QT_IM_MODULE="scim"

I autostart scim with "scim -d"
I have a large number of scim related packages installed, I don't
know if all of them are relevant:
scim
scim-bridge-agent
scim-bridge-client-gtk
scim-bridge-client-qt
scim-bridge-client-qt4
scim-gtk2-immodule
scim-qtimm
scim-uim
(plus lots of jp specific scim tools)

I have these in a different file, but that shouldn't change anything.
I based my setup on a tutorial on the Ubuntu Forums.

You could also check out skim, which is some sort of KDE
frontend for scim.

Not any really great ones, but you could check your environmental variables
(type "env" on the command line) to make sure they are right (environmental
variables can be overridden depending on the read order of files they are in).

XIM_PROGRAM=scim -d
QT_IM_MODULE=scim
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

(I am not using scim-bridge, I think it is just a way to work around C++
version issues, which you shouldn't have in Debian)

Also, are you using Debian stable or testing or what?

In the scim setup window, does your input method have its own listing under
"IMEngine"? If so, does it have an on/off or trigger setting that
agrees with the
"global setup" setting? (I am not sure this is needed, but that is how mine is.)

I don't know much about skim, as I don't use it, or KDE (I use Fluxbox

The cpuid program should be able to tell you if you have a 32 bit
Sempron or a 64 bit Sempron. Even if you have a Sempron64, I
am not sure if you can/should run a 64 bit kernel while using
Debian's i386 arch.

In any case, the the k7 kernel will be better than the 486.

> And, when I am ready to upgrade, do I just run an apt-get install

Yes, but you may want to install the k7 meta-package, which
always depends on a recent k7 kernel, so you don't have to
manually update your kernel image. Just install linux-image-k7
and it will do the rest.

Oh, well, yeah, if you have out-of-source modules, that will cause some
issues. I knew that, but didn't remember to mention it, because I don't
use those kind of modules myself. Thank for catching that.

I can install wajig fine on my sid box. I have not upgraded to apt 0.7.8
from 0.7.6 yet, as aptitude has not been updated to handle the new
version. Python-apt, which wajig depends on, has not yet been updated
either. However, it sounds like this happened before the latest apt update?
Was your wajig actually removed or is it just not possible to upgrade it?
If the latter, does it show a broken state if you try to upgrade or does it
show as the next available version?

Some people that develop KDE apps use KDevelop. It is C++ and KDE
focused, but has support for Java and Perl (I don't know about Lisp). Java
Devs often use Eclipse (Eclipse supports languages besides Java, but I
don't know specifically about Perl and Lisp) or NetBeans. I guess most
Perl and Lisp Devs would use text editors, like Vim, Nedit and Emacs
(Emacs has a particularly good Lisp editing mode, since it is written in Lisp).

You will need to install the libraries yourself.

I am not much of a programmer, and I haven't used XCode, but
I don't think you will find anything comparable to XCode on Linux.
OS X is developed entirely by one company from top to bottom,
and it is guided by one man's vision. XCode is developed by the
same company.

"Linux", on the other hand, is a bundle of hundreds or thousands
of separate parts, all developed by different companies,
organizations, or individuals. Many of the components have the
same or overlapping goals. "Linux" is a huge, messy ecosystem
of software, and it would be just about impossible to create an
IDE that is to Linux as XCode is to OS X.

Anyway, besides the previously mentioned KDevelop, Eclipse
and NetBeans, there is Ajunta (Gnome), IntelliJ IDEA (proprietary,
costs $), JBuilder (costs $, built on Eclipse), and Komodo
(free and $ versions). There are others but those are some of
the most well known (also, each one of those does not
necessarily support all of [Java, Lisp, Perl]).

After much googling, it seems to be a ViXS (1745) PureTV-U (2100) device
aka ViXS XCode 2100. I am seeing very little info on it at all and basically
nothing linux related. Don't get you hopes up.

Definitely not a computer designed with Linux in mind.

dpkg --get-selections will list installed packages.

/var/log/dpkg and /var/log/apt/term.log and /var/log/aptitude have some
install-related stuff, but you would need to do some work to get the
date packages where installed. I don't know of any other way.

Ctrl+[ is handy, especially if you have turned Caps Lock into a Ctrl key.

And, yes, you can use an map command in ~/.vimrc to use something
else as escape.

upgrades, bug fixes etc., wont be as smooth as it would be if the package is
in Debian. Tracking a software outside Debian is always a pain in the neck
IMHO.

raju

Nvu has not had any significant upgrades since 1.0 and the version that was in
Debian didn't have many bug-fixes either (my packages says version 1.0final-1).

A new HTML editor using Gecko 1.9 is being worked on (Nvu uses 1.7 I think),
but it is not even in beta yet and it looks like it will have a
different name. So
the Debian package has minimal advantages.

Gnome-specimen is a really nice font preview app that may have

I love PulseAudio! I used to run KDE, and I quickly decided to disable
and remove arts - it was very unstable and flaky. Then I used Fluxbox
and other WMs. I tried esd, but found it as bad as arts. So for a long
time I used bare ALSA (not even any dmix). At the beginning of this
month, I got around to setting up PA, and it works great!

I have had no problem mixing sounds, and no problems getting things
to play. Mplayer, Xine and SDL all have pulse support, and vlc is
working fine, thanks to alsa emulation. Thanks to a third party library
called et-sdl-sound, even Quake III works fine. All this is on Sid btw.

Anyway, it is so hassle-free and good that it seems like I have been
using it for much longer than 3-4 weeks. I wouldn't go back to bare
alsa, and certainly not arts or esd.

Hard to say, but in my experience, wine will work with a particular
program fine for several versions, then break (partially or completely)
for a version or two, then work again.

In any case it is possible to up-to-date debs from here:
http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

They have an etch version now, and it is possible to use the Ubuntu
versions on Debian - I am using Sid with the Ubuntu Gutsy wine debs.

Even when the main Debian Wine has been up-to-date, I have had
better luck with the above-mentioned version.

Debian 4.0, Etch, was released April 8th, 2007. Linux kernel 2.6.18

Yes, 2.6.18 is the Etch kernel, but see below.

Debian backports (backports.org) has 2.6.22 kernels for etch:

There is good information here:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_Multimedia_Keys#Assigning_keys_to_special_functions

The first part about finding the raw keycodes, etc. is probably not
needed nowadays. As the wiki says, multimedia apps often have
support for the media control key (mute, play, volume, etc.)

Many Window Managers and Desktop Environments have support
for the app launcher keys, and xbindkeys can be used in WMs that
do not have support.

Here is what part of my xorg.conf looks like:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "G90f-2"
Option "DPMS"
Option "PreferredMode" "1600x1200"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI RV350 AS [Radeon 9550]"
Monitor "G90f-2"
DefaultDepth24
SubSection "Display"
#Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

As you can see the "modes" are commented out, and monitor
has a "preferredmode". Unfortunately I don't remember what
blog post pointed me in this direction and I don't know what
variant methods might work, if this particular setup do the job.

Hopefully this will be of some help.

Followup - I found this page:
http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

which mentions dropping the screen/display/modes section
and the vertical and horizontal specs. Further down, it
mentions the use of "preferredmode", although in a more
complex way (with modeline).

P.S. gmail's "update conversation" shows that this is now
redundant, but since I already wrote it, I guess I'll post it.

Try adding a "device" option to the mouse section:

 Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Configured Mouse"
 Driver "mouse"
 Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
 EndSection

And possibly a protocol option, such as:

Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"

You may not need this or the protocol "auto" may work.
See "man mouse" for more protocols.

I think the debconf stuff for xorg has been changed, due to the fact
that xorg now works (or should work) with a very minimal xorg.conf.
The goal the upstream xorg devs are approaching is to be able to
run X without any conf file at all.

My understanding is that XUL's shortcut/keybinding system is
inherently weird and/or underpowered, making it difficult to
put good keybindings in the apps or in extensions. I guess
it has been done in Vimperator (vim-like FF), but as far as I
know, Muttator is purely theoretical at this point.

Abiword is just a word processor, and it does work with .doc, although

I agree that email should be text, not html, and that it should be saved
in a standard format (but which one? All mbox varieties have problems,
MH format has problems, and Maildir and Maildir++ have problems).

However, I vehemently disagree that email should be ascii. This is
2008 and the planet is more united than it has ever been. Unicode,
particularly utf-8 should be and is the new standard. Users of the
Latin alphabet, and especially English speakers, have no reason
to complain since utf-8 is backwards compatible with ascii.

Any slight disadvantages unicode might have are more than
outweighed by the communication barriers it breaks down.

Moz et al uses a modified mboxrd format. It shouldn't
look binary, but it might look scary if you looked in the
[folder name].msf file, instead of the plain [folder name]
file.

The msf file is some sort of extra file that Mozilla uses.
It is in the (text) Mork format, which any Mozilla dev will
admit is one of the worst things ever invented (which is
why Mork and several other formats are being
abandoned for sqlite).

Evince got form support in 2.20, and was originally supposed to get
annotation support at the same time. Unfortunately, that was pushed
back, and according to the roadmap[1], it is now scheduled for 2.24
(due this fall). In the meantime, I believe Adobe Reader supports
annotations and there is a native Linux version.

Interesting, I thought the reason Evince didn't have annotations was
that poppler
did not support it yet, but it obviously has at least some support, as
poppler is
Okular's pdf lib. I guess the Gnome guys just haven't added the UI for it.

Gwenview (KDE4 default image viewer (also available in KDE3) and Kview

Now that I have more time to write, I will follow up on my previous email.
My family got my grandmother an LCD for Christmas and we went with
a 22" TN type for cost reasons. It is quite acceptable for the use it gets
but there is a just noticable gradient in brightness from top to bottom
(brighter at the bottom). This may be annoying to you, especially if you
use it for hours at a time. It doesn't bother me for the short times I use
my grandmothers computer, but if/when I get an LCD for myself, I will
avoid TN panels, which frequently have this issue. Currently, most 22"
LCDs are TNs.

I fail to see why not using "a standard GUI mail client" is n00bish.
Advocating ever more basic systems for reading mail may be silly,
(or may not be) but a n00b is unlikely to even know about mutt and

Let's start with the laptop, and local PA only. If you want remote
capability, we can look at that once we get local sound working.

You say the laptop isn't very powerful, but what exactly does that
mean?

What version of Debian are you using?

Are you using the "perfect setup" docs?

You say Audacious stutters, have you tried other apps? Do they have
the same problem?

If there is anything in the logs, it would probably be in the syslog or
user log.

They have been changing the way debconf works for xorg, now
that xorg is increasingly capable of running with a more minimal
xorg.conf (or none at all).

>

Have you tried both EXA and XAA? Also check lsmod to see if the drm
and i915 kernel modules are being used, and see if there are any
errors or warnings in the xorg log.

As far as annoying video cards go, I wanted some 3D, but couldn't
stand the "nvidia" driver, much less "fglrx", so I got a 9250 (~$45)
which has full 2d and 3d with the open "radeon" driver. It plays
Quake III, so I'm happy. I'll probably upgrade to a recent Radeon
once the "RadeonHD" driver is ready.

In section "Device"

   Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
or
   Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

EXA is the new method, and theoretically better, but in
some cases, the implementation hasn't caught up yet
and XAA can be better.

Maybe post your whole xorg.conf while your at it.

It seems implausible, doesn't it?
I used to be fairly efficent on Windows, but it took a lot of tweaking. Then
something happened and you had to reinstall, and all tweaks where lost...

Yeah, in a domain environment, IE can tie directly into the Windows NTLM
system, and use the credentials you logged into Windows with.

Firefox NTLM:
http://codebetter.com/blogs/eric.wise/archive/2006/11/16/Note-to-self_3A00_-Firefox-Windows-Authentication.aspx

Opera 9.0 (for Windows) and up is supposed to have basic support for NTLM.
The 9.5 betas may have improved support and there are proxies that you can
run on your local machine that will do NTLM auth.

PortableApps.com may help for some things.

You can see if pulseaudio is running with "ps -ef | grep pulse" or similar.

In general, if you removed esd and apps are still set to use esd, and they
still produce sound, PA must be working (*something* is taking the place
of esd). Also, ALSA can't do mixing by itself, so if you can hear two streams
at once (e.g. music and a video), something is mixing them.

If you wanted, you could tell apps to use PA directly, instead of via esd or
alsa emulation.

In ~/.xine/config :
 audio.driver:pulse

In ~/.mplayer/config :
  ao = pulse

SDL and GStreamer have pulseaudio packages that you can install.

You must be looking at the wrong package. The latest stable
Iceape/SeaMonkey is 1.1.x. The development version is
2.0a1pre (2.0 pre-alpha) - there is no 1.5 version at all.

Bret, there is way to get older versions, unfortunately, I can't
remember it right now. I am sure someone else on the list
knows, or you could download and install SeaMonkey from
Mozilla. It isn't a .deb, but it isn't too hard to setup, and you
could move up to 1.1, which is a fair bit better than 1.0

There is a definite advantage to .debs. Anyway, what I would do is
create the directory as root, then change the group and permissions
so your user can write to it. Your primary group name is the same as
your user name.

root# mkdir /usr/local/seamonkey
root# chgrp $username /usr/local/seamonkey
root# chmod g+rwx /usr/local/seamonkey

At this point, you should be able to install to this directory as your
normal user.

Regarding your later message, it sounds like you are trying a
Mozilla package that is in the Debian repos? If so, that is just
a transition package to SeaMonkey (IceApe).

Mozilla 1.8 = SeaMonkey 1.0 (rename) = IceApe 1.0 (Debian rename).

re: your even later message (man I love gmail's update conversation
button), If SeaMonkey is (still) in your menu, that is Mozilla.

I have to leave again, but I'll check in later.

I don't know about this particular issue, but I found famd to
be a constant source of problems. Gamin is better, but not
perfect. I actually don't have either one installed - not very
many things actually depend on them. I do have libfam
installed - lots of things depend on that or libgamin, but
even libfam and libgamin don't depend on their daemons
(they merely suggest them). Unless you really need fam,
you should look into removing it.

It has nothing to do with the mb, what matters is the cpu. i686 is ok
for all amd and
intel chips newer than pentium II or Athlon. If you have a 64 bit chip
(athlon 64 or
core 2 (or some P4's)) you can use the amd64 arch, although 686 will also work.

I think you might run into some issues if you install perl 5.10, but I am
not a perl expert.

As far as installing stuff from cpan, I suggest you check out a program
called dh-make-perl. It wraps cpan to create a .deb of the module, so
you can use the package manager to manage your cpan modules. It is
clearly easy to use, since I got it to work without much trouble and I
know almost nothing about perl or cpan.

I could compile my own ircd-hybrid, but I'm not sure if ssl support is
supposed to be used by IRC clients. It seems more targeted to secure
connections between IRC servers. And then, ssl is only so much secure
...

Maybe ssh could be used to tunnel IRC, but that appears to be at least
troublesome on the client side.

What's the way to go?

You can get some security in jabber with TLS/SSL . Many (most?) Jabber
clients and severs support TLS and/or SSL. If both clients connect to
the same server with TLS or the clients connect to different servers
with TLS and the servers talk to each other with TLS, then things are
somewhat secure.

For real end-to-end security some Jabber clients support GPG. See
these documents for more info:

I think if you are worried about the security afforded by ssl you might
have to rethink your approach.

(Unfortuanately I can't really comment on your ideas as I have no
experience.)

SSL with a strong cipher (like AES) is great; however, as used in IM,
it is not end to end.
Jabber+GPG is end to end.

Here's my standard procedure for making a data CD:
$ mkisofs -o image.iso -J -r
$ cdrecord -v dev=ATAPI:/dev/cdrom image.iso
This has always worked on both Linux and Windows, and the "-r" should
make it work on a Mac as well. At least I *think* Mac is the platform
that needs Rock Ridge extensions.

Rock Ridge is for Posix systems. Mac OS X can use Rock Ridge and
Joliet. You can use -apple to create apple ISO9660 extentions. It is also
possible to create a hybrid ISO9660/Joliet/Rock Ridge/HFS image.

Thanks! I'm into end-to-end security. Can a gabber client connect
directly to another gabber client and then both of them encrypt
whatever is to be transfered with gpg?

Or would I run a jabber server and have both clients connect via the
server?

Hm, I'll start with installing gabber and see what I can find out from
there.

Jabber is client-server (except for things like Jingle audio and file
transfer, which can be p2p after initial setup), so you could run your
own server or use a third party server (which would see addressing
info, etc. but would not see the contents of the message).

If you want to run your own server, ejabberd is supposed to be
easy to set up. Wildfire is also well regarded.

Kelly

Ordinary cd drives can't read SACD. There are some freestanding
cd players that can also play SACD, but I don't know of any pc
drives that can do it. Some SACDs are hybrids and can be read
as a cd (at cd quality). If your disc is one of those it should be
possible to rip it, but I don't know what options, if any, you would
need. Sorry I can't help more than that.

Cheers,
Kelly
