i815 Soundcard Problem
Hai to the users of Debian, Problem: My motherboard is of D815EEA2 from Intel with onboard soundcard with the chip AD1885. The problem I face is that I cant boot with sound support every time I boot the system.Only at random occasions the soundcard is working. This is the case whether I include the sound support into the kernel or compile it as a module. On the other side manpage of bootparam 'man bootparam' says that there are certain soundcards that requires the particular dos driver to put the card into a known state.Following this after booting pc into dos, loading the particular dos driver, then loading GNU/Linux with the help of loadlin surely works. This is the case with almost all systems working on the specified series of the motherboard.I have tried kernel-sources (2.5.38 & 2.5.41) which supports alsa modules & drivers ,but the same problem persists. Is there anyone else using and facing the same problem/ any solution for this problem where a 100% sound can be obtained without the help of loadlin in these motherboards. = %~~~% regards, Ratheesh K K [EMAIL PROTECTED] Kochi-04, Kerala, INDIA. %~~~% __ Do you Yahoo!? Aptitude
Dear Debian Users, I installed Debian 3.0r0 from a CD set onto a reformatted hard disk (hdb) which involved, among others, the following procedures:- (1) Did not chose tasksel. (2) Did not chose dselect. (3) Used apt-get to install aptitude. (4) Used aptitude to install xserver-s3. (5) Used aptitude to install x-window-system. (6) Used aptitude to install KDE. Therefore, I was able to de-select 60 out of 97 recommended dependency programs without creating a broken package. (7) Used aptitude to install KDM. Thus, I was able to successfully load a basic Linux operating system which enabled me to run aptitude to install and remove programs in order to determine their relevance for a proposed customised desktop. Once the list of programs was finalised, and with a reformatted hard disk, I undertook the above steps 1 to 7 again. However, repeating stage 6 exactly, KDE always remained as a broken package (even if de-select 1 out of 97 recommended dependency programs), and therefore unable to proceed. Nevertheless, I decided to carry on and installed KDE, including all recommended dependency programs, with the intention to remove unwanted programs, e.g., KOffice, Kruler, etc., on completion of the above steps 1 to 7. To my surprise, this was not possible to achieve with aptitude or Kpackage or synaptic, without removing KDE itself. I shall be grateful if someone will kindly provide answers to these questions: (1) Why is the KDE program a mega package, i.e., incorporate KOffice, etc. programs? (2) Why did aptitude work the way I expected the first time, but not on subsequent occasions? (3) Is there a program available to remove unwanted packages either before or after installation? (4) Does the program deselect (very difficult to use) fulfil my objectives (a minimalist installation)? All assistance will be most appreciated. Conexant HCF modem driver for Debian 3.0r0 i386
Dear Debian Users, I have just installed Debian 3.0r0 (Woody) for the first time. So far I am very impressed with this Linux distribution, especially the software package management system. However, I seek assistance with regards to a 56k internal modem. I would be most grateful if someone could provide a url address from where it is possible to down load a free driver, or alternatively supply a copy of the driver, for Conexant HCF modem. Regrettably Linuant.com does not provide support for Kernal 2.2 any longer, only for Kernal 2.4 and above. As I am a novice at using Linux in general and Debian in particular, I am rather reluctant to try customizing and upgrading the Kernal just at the moment. All help will be much appreciated. DSL and Sound Configuration
Hi all: I'm having problems configuring my ADSL connection w/Debian. I have a Lynksys BEFW11S4 V.2 Etherfast Router that connects to the internet via my Efficient Network's 5360 Speedstream Modem. I use a Lynksys 10/100 Etherfast Card. Here's the rundown. On a previous install of Debian, I was unable to get X to start, though I had a fully functional internet connection that I used to d/l Debian. Decided to reinstall - this time, got X to run, but, ironically, my internet is down. Damn, are computer's fickle? LOL. I installed the 'ppp' module into my kernel like I normally do in the Debian install. No joy. Tried removing that module. No joy. Added just 'ppp_deflate'. Nope. Tried 'ppp' and 'ppp_deflate' together. Nada. I ran 'pppoeconfig' (or is it just 'pppconfig'? it's the 'ADSL/PPPOE' Configurator in the Debian Menu) - it won't run on the initial try, and prompts me to run 'modconf'. After selecting and removing/installing one of the modules (apparently, it just wants a change, and it doesn't care what), 'modconf' dumps me back into 'pppoeconfig' - which tells me that it now detects my Ethernet Card, and then tries to auto-config everything. That's when it tells me no - it can't detect the setup from the 'provider' - I'm assuming that's the router. It also says that its possible that other processes are using the interface 'eth0' - my ethernet card. That's it. Next is my soundcard - a Soundblaster 128PCI - aka: ES1371. Everytime I start up KDE, it brings up a dialogue box that I used to get with Mandrake - 'do not have permissions to device '/dev/dsp''. I tried changing the permissions on it, but it didn't work. I never did fix the problem - just installed SuSE on top of it. LOL - I'm lazy. But, I like Debian too much to just quit at it. That's why I'm asking you guys. Any ideas for either of these two problems? Thanks a lot. Trouble Installing Sarge From CD-ROM
Title: Message Hello, I'm getting a blank black screen when doing a "partition" (either old or new) using sarge image created by jigdo. Hitting Control-C briefly clears the black screen to see the cfdisk console behind it, but since I hit the ctrl-C, it "fails" I don't know how to (or if to) report this as a bug. Help? Slow Win2k after Debian install
I'm new to GNU/Linux & Debian and am having a problem with installing to a system running Win2k. I've done a lot of reading on the dual-boot subject but haven't seen anything to make me believe there's anything wrong with my setup. Basically, my partitions looked like this: Primary: C: / hda1 Primary, extended { D: / hda5 E: / hda6 F: / hda7 G: / hda8} hda8 was fairly large and mostly unused so I deleted it using partition magic in DOS and created hda8, 9 & 10 (for /, /home & swap) using cfdisk. Debian installed just fine :-) and i made a boot disk in the meantime (rather than installing lilo) with the aim of dd'ing the bootsector to c: and using winboot (or whatever they call it) for switching, at least until I figure out lilo.conf. The problem occurred when i booted up Windows. It took forever, maybe about 10 minutes with lots of disk activity, and when it had booted explorer was slw; not annoyingly slow, catastrophicly slow, taking 2 minutes to show a context menu. hda8/9/10 now showed up in Windows as Local Disk G:, filesystem type unknown, and it became clear that the problem only occurs when explorer needs to show G: in MyComputer, save dialogs and the like. I've now deleted the extended partition completely and so can be flexible with the partitioning scheme. 3 vfat Primary partitions and one extended for Debian would be acceptable, but I'd like to know what the problem is, since I've seen similar setups work for other people with no problems and it seems a bit limiting to not allow Windows and Debian to share the extended partition. Any advice or pointers to info would be much appreciated. Cheers! Jerry K -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

kernel-source/kernel-headers/HCF drivers
Apologies for the long post. I'm attempting to install HCF modem drivers from a tarball --I know, I'll get a real modem, that's not my point just now-- and it's expecting to find the kernel source tree at /usr/src/linux. That's fine, i've got a symlink there to /usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.20 and make install runs just fine, but when i run the hcfpciconfig utility it bails looking for autoconf.h (presumably the first of many missing headers) in /usr/src/linux/include/linux. So I did cd /usr/src/linux mv include include.old ln -s /usr/src/kernel-header-2.2.20/include include and ran hcfpciconfig again. This time there were no warnings about missing headers, but the config failed due to a mismatch in gcc versions. I haven''t looked into this problem yet, but the logfile is included below. I'm worried about this approach because there are headers in kernel-source that aren't in kernel-package, and compiling the drivers with headers that aren't in the kernel source seems a bit bizzare to say the least. So, questions: what's the story with kernel sources in debian? Where should i be putting everything so that makefiles can find them where they expect? I'm going to have to install a 2.4 kernel at some point soon, so should i just do away with kernel-source and kernel-headers and expect apt-get install kernel-package to put everything in the right place? Here's the hcfpciconfig log file, anyone managed to get these working? 8 buttons mouse!
Hello. I've been gifted with a Lo@@tech Mx700. It's awesome, it works nicely, with the usual 3 buttons (2 + wheel), but I'd really like to get all the buttons to work too... I looked for instructions, and found about xbindkeys and xmacroplay: # In an xterm or konsole, execute "xbindkeys -k". Then press the media key you'd like to bind to a key combination. You will see something like this: "NoCommand" m:0x10 + c:176 Mod2 + NoSymbol # But this does not work for me. It does work just for the keyboard. Pressing mouse buttons I get no response at all. Found something, but...
I found out a previous post about this, but I still can't get my mouse to work porperly... I read: From: Juergen Stuber Hi, this is a bit from the back of my head, as I didn't yet bother to configure the extra buttons on my new machine: You can get the two buttons on the left side to work as follows (the top button never reacts, and the other two are the same as turning the wheel): Use ExplorerPS/2 as the protocol. ZAxisMapping "9 10" Buttons "10" You can also use smaller numbers, for example Buttons "7" and ZAxisMapping "6 7" but the buttons for the wheel must be at the end. You can then remap them to 4 and 5 by xsetpointer "USB Mice" && xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 4 5" The xsetpointer is only needed if you have several mice, for example a touchpad and a usb mouse on a laptop, use the names from the XF86Config. You can distinguish all the 10 buttons in the event interface, but I'm not aware of an XFree driver for that. Jürgen I got the two buttons above to work, but the two other buttons on the left do not. They still work as a normal left button. What's wrong?!? I've got my base installed and i am still trying to get everything else on with apt. My problem is that I still can't tell what's up with my modem-card (Megahertz XJ1144). I do know that it is not a winmodem, but it doesn't show up on any of the lists of "modems working under Linux" either. When I boot it does show up as /dev/ttyS0 and when I use stty it show up too, baud and all. when I pon my plog reads: pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid0 tchettatr: Input/Output error (5) or also: send (ATZ^M) expect (OK) It just doesn't seem to be dialing at all. Almost There...
Thanks to the help of E.Paris and Shaleh, I've got my problem pretty much narrowed down; hopefully someone can get me through the last bit. I am using an IBM 755Thinkpad with a Megahertz XJ1144 modemcard. The modemcard is not a winmodem as was suggested to me-- Eloy Paris dug out a XJ1144 card he had and it worked for him. I have the card in /dev/ttyS0 I have installed the Debian base using 1.4 disks and now I am trying to use apt in dselect in order to get the rest via ftp. I ran pppconfig already. When i insert my card I get two friendly Beeps. The result of ls -s /dev/ttyS0 is: crw-rw1root dialout 4 [time/date] /dev/ttyS0 When I pon, my plog gets to "expect" and nothing happens. I do not think my modem is dialing at all. If anyone has had this problem please help! Three weeks into the installation process and I am starting to lose my nerve! .muttrc: pgp_autoencrypt + send-hook problem
Hi, I'm using Mutt 0.93.2i on a stock slink box, and the PGP version on the system is pgp-i 2.6.3a. I need to encrypt every message sent to one particular address. Referring to the mutt manual, I tried making use of the send-hook + pgp_autoencrypt feature. It just doesn't work. I've tried each of the following entries in my $HOME/.muttrc. send-hook user 'set pgp_autoencrypt' send-hook '^user' 'set pgp_autoencrypt' send-hook '~t [EMAIL PROTECTED]' 'set pgp_autoencrypt' One point I'm not sure about is as to whether the ^ and $ are escaped (?) characters entered using the Ctrl-V + key mechanism. (Am just getting the hang of regular expressions.) Mutt gurus, what am I doing wrong ? Thanks. - arun -- Please Cc: me. I am not currently subscribed to this list. Thanks.

DPMS
Hi, I run xdm under Debian 2.0, using the S3 server. It seems Debian enables DPMS (don't even know what it stands for ;-() by default. However, I've changed the standby, suspend and poweroff timeouts to 120, 180 and 600 seconds respectively. Now, it quite often happens that I leave the system for brief periods of time and come back to find the monitor (a Samtron) in standby/suspend mode. Is this constant switching harmful to the monitor ? Or should I increse the length of the timeouts ? - K. chicken and egg problem with installation on a floppyless system
Hi there, Ive been trying to install DEBIAN onto my laptop for quite a while now. at one point i did succeed but now im screwed and have run out of ideas. in a nutshell: i have a compaq contura aero 4/25 this machine has an external pcmcia floppy drive i also have a pcmcia ethernet card for it. the computer will only recognize the floppy if it boot with it in the slot - BUT then it doesnt recognize the presence of the slot even if i take the floppy out. in order to have the computer recognise the pcmcia slot, i have to boot with the floppy out. the ethernet card causes no such problem. with the ethernet card in or out, the computer recognizes the presence of the pcmcia slot. Now for the problem: a few months ago, i installed debian using the 2.0.6 kernal. i made a set of boot/root/base/modules disks and successfully installed everything i wanted [or could fit onto my 170 MB drive]. now, i bought a new 1.3GB drive and want to move everything over. Here is what i have tried 0) use the old 2.0.6 setup to contact ftp.debian.org and make a new set of boot/../ disks. 1) physically install the new hard drive. 2) boot the computer with the floppy in and start feeding in the new disks. 3) now since the floppy is in, the computer refuses to recognise that i have a pcmcia slot - so it wont load/configure the proper kernel modules. 4) i cant get the kernel source and the new modules into the computer by hand since my only means of data ingress is through the floppy and the kernel .deb package is > 1.44MB. 5) i retreated to the 2.0.6 disk set that i had saved from before. 6) i reinstalled that set successfully. 7) having much more room on the hard disk, i resolved to update all packages to more recent rev levels. 8) when the pcmcia packages came over [via ftp] something went wrong. 9) now ive lost pcmcia support - ie the ethernet card wont work - so no more ftp - so i cant recover the previous state. 10) i could reinstall from step 5) above. but i would like to bootstrap up to the current rev level. any hints? it seems to me that i just need to do things in the proper order and i cant seem to figure this out. my news server is a bit dicey to work so please email any replies directly to me [ill post a summary if somebody indicates that it would be a useful thing to make public] thanks in advance for your help... [oh and by the way, im in a bit of a rush to do this as i am leaving the internet on saturday to be with my wife who is expecting twins anyday now... i know its a bit much to ask for help - and to ask for it fast - but pleaseif i can be helped - help me.] -Ketan what came first DEBIAN or the FLOPPY? -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . I've been having some problems getting startup scripts to work. Particularly with MySQL (latest binary release). From what I know, you're supposed to put the script in /etc/init.d and make a sym-link to /etc/rcX.d right? In any case, I put the script in init.d and made a symlink (S99mysql.server -> ../init.d/mysql.server) in rc3.d, but nothing happens at startup. I remeber having this problem before and fixing it, but now I can't remember what I did. Running potato (not like it makes a difference, I was running slink the other time). Anyway, if I've missed some critical step, please let me know. =) Oh yeah.. the script and the symlink DO work directly from the command line. i.e. "/etc/init.d/mysql.server start" works. I've even tried echo testing the script, and have determined that it's not even being run at startup. Thanks RK Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
re: cdrom ... and alsa
cd-rw discs require different laser frequencies in order to be read (that's why you cant use them in most audio cd players and dvd players) most new computer cd drives implement multi-read functionality. i think it was multi-read.. i dunno.. i always get the terms mixed up.. =) if you look at the recordable side of an rw, you'll see that it's less reflective than an r or a normal silver - hence the varying frequencies required. also, on a side note.. has anyone had problems with alsa under potato? there's basically no documentation (man pages and such), and it seems to be missing files. the source dist for alsa apparently requires that i have a copy of the kernel source (configure references /usr/src/linux/include/version.h or something similar)... which i frankly dont want to download.. i dont have a copy of version.h to fake it out with either. anyway, i have an intel al440lx mb with a builtin opl3-sa3, and alsa just doesnt want to work with it. isapnp detects it fine, and the configs that i pass to alsa through alsaconfig (or whatever it was called) are correct, but alsa just doesnt like it. the whole thing just seems wierd.. the sound detect module is totally missing (as are the rest of the drivers apparently) and alsa_modules is reported as referenced, but never uploaded by apt-get! i'm kinda stuck either way i turn on this one. any help is greatly appreciated =) Hello! =20 I just recently purchased a copy of Debian GNU/Linux 2.1. Although my friend told me that I can just down loaded for free from the web. So I installed it on my machine and everything runs well except for that my cdrom didn't recognized any of the CD-Rewritable copies that burned. However, the operating system able to allows me to read other CD-W copies that are not rewritable. I did all this with mounting the cdrom. CD-R disks can be finicky under various configurations. Can you read from the same CD booting the system under a different OS (say DOS or Windows)? What is this mean? I have most of the softwares that needed to be run in Linux are in those CD-Rewritable. What can I do? Either re-burn the disks or mount them on another system and use network access. Printing trouble
Friends, I have installed the Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 distribution on my 486 machine called "sarasvati.nio.org" with 32MB RAM. This has a local HP LaserJet 4M+ printer attatched to it over a serial port. The printer name is "mayem". "Sarasvati" is connected over the LAN. I have the following strange printing problems. All users who are local users on "sarasvati" can print their jobs on the printer. Users who are not local on "sarasvati" cannot print their jobs on it but can do so if they sudo to root. Printing trouble
Dear Friends, I have installed the Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 distribution on my 486 machine called "sarasvati.nio.org" with 32MB RAM. Window users can also print here. I have checked the printcap file for rs: and rg: entries but none exist. I will be very grateful in you could help me in resolving this problem. P.S: The printer is also simultaneously connected directly over the network with an IP address of 172.27.15.6, being a network printer but since there is a problem with its network card, it cannot be used that way. 3c905c-txm driver problems
hey, i'm having trouble getting the 3com driver (3c90x) to work with potato r2, i386. i downloaded the driver from: http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux/3c90x-1.0.0i.tar.gz i have a 3c905-txm card. what follows is what i did and how it failed. './compile_UP' <-- this a compile script they provide, it worked. 'insmod -f 3c90x.o media_select=7' response from last command: "Warning: kernel-module version mismatch 3c90x.o was compiled for kernel version 2.2.15 while this kernel is version 2.2.18pre21" this didn't make sense to me because i just compiled it. 'lsmod' response: " Used ... 3c90x 22580 0 (unused) ... " 'ifconfig -a' <-- showed eth0 'ifconfig eth0 x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x' response: "SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device" obviously this is the part that i cant get past. any help would be great. perhaps i am missing a step in the loading of the driver?? b
xvlib and potato
Hey, I'm trying to install some digital video tools (kino 0.4 and libdv 0.5) on potato. Both of these programs seem to require xvlib (xvideo). A quick google search has turned up a package from woody that contained the libraries. The problem is that they are for xfree 4.0.x Do these libraries exist for xfree 3.3.x and can they be found in potato? Thanks for the help. b

Old HDs missing with PCI RAID controller (Sil680) support.
It seems that whenever I compile my kernel, which is version 2.4.24, with nothing different except support for my PCI ATA-133 RAID controller, that my other HDs are missing. Once compiled and while booting with the the binary that has support, the kernel will find the 30GB that is lying on the PCI card and assign it as hda. The kernel will not display that it's finding the HDs on the motherboard's IDE controller, therefor I get kernel panic because what used to be /dev/hda1 (my root partition) is now the new HD on the new RAID controller. I have tried passing the kernel different root devices starting with hdb and moving to hdh (hoping to land on it), with no luck. I have tried to assign it parameters (that i'm not familiar with) like ide=reverse, with no luck. So the last thing I tried was to add an initrd image that the kernel could use to boot with, hoping it would get far enough to notice the HDs on the motherboard (my root partition), this also did not work, and I had no luck. I'm hoping someone has seen this issue before, and can therefor help me correct it. If it helps any the panic error is that it can't find init. Which it of course can't find if I have no root partition? --K-sPecial -- __ Check out the latest SMS services @ http://www.linuxmail.org This allows you to send and receive SMS through your mailbox. "The filesystem was not created" during installation
Hardware: MSI K7T266 Pro2-A motherboard w/ AMD Athlon XP 1200 Maxtor 40 GB hard drive Software: Debian Woody 3.0 r1 The motherboard is new (never used, even though it's an older model), recently purchased on Ebay. The hard drive is not new, but until last week I was using it in a different Debian system that ran for around 2.5 years with no problems (originally Potato, upgraded to Woody). I can boot off the first install CD and create partitions with no problem. The swap partition (hda4, 2 GB) initializes fine, as does hda1 (5 GB). When initializing the remaining partitions (hda2, 10 GB, and hda3, 23 GB), the process stops and returns a "The filesystem was not created" error. The installation then hangs. I tried using both ext2 and ext3 with the same results. This happens no matter which partition I try to initialize, whether or not I do a bad block scan, and also when I tried to create one big partition as an experiment. In my troubleshooting efforts I booted off a recent Knoppix CD. Once booted up, I ran mkfs, which ran fine on hda1 but segfaulted and hung the system on hda2. A Windows 2000 blue screened during installation. I'm guessing the problem might be with the IDE controller on this motherboard, but I haven't been able to find anything on the web about it. The board has a built in Promise IDE RAID controller, which is disabled in the BIOS (although I tried it both ways). S.M.A.R.T. is also disabled. Unfortunately, I don't have another hard drive or motherboard to try, so I'm looking for a little insight into the problem before I spend money on new hardware that may not fix the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Kenn -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Parallel processing unit cluster for single ffmpeg calls?
Hi folks, I was wondering if I can build a cluster to convert / transcode videos with ffmpeg. There are some workstations standing around here ... and I though maybe it's possible to combine their computing power? To be clear: The task is to work on a single video as fast as possible. I found this, but it's from 2010: http://www.samir.ca/2010/11/23/high-speed-ffmpeg-cluster-encoding-with-python-and-avidemux.html I have no experience in clustering and would be grateful for any useful hint. How to change lightdm background in bullseye? (additional: weird stat behaviour)
Hello, Part 1: lightdm background I've just upgraded to bullseye and would like to change the background of the lightdm greeter. According to ... https://wiki.debian.org/LightDM#Change_the_greeter.27s_background ... I'm supposed to edit ... /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf ... which I've done ... [greeter] background=/usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/foo.png user-background=/usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/foo.png ... with no success. Background sticks to dark blue image with debian artwork. Before, I had already tried to get a language selector in lightdm by changing the indicators: indicators=~host;~spacer;~session;~language;ally;~clock;~power But lightdm doesn't show a language selector. I'm suspecting my changes in lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf have no effect. Question 1: How do I properly change the lightdm background image? Question 2: Is lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf the right place to configure the lightdm greeter in bullseye? Part 2: weird stat behaviour (ext4 filesystem) I'm not too familiar with stat and access times, although I do believe to have some understanding of it. But the following confuses me: The question related to lightdm was: Is the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf actually read by lightdm? To find out I edited the file and restartet lightdm. "stat" didn't show any access to the file so I did a system reboot because I suspected the missing access change was due to caching. But after the reboot the file still had the old access time! (I removed addional output of the stat command): /etc/lightdm$ date Do 16. Jun 11:11:05 CEST 2022 /etc/lightdm$ stat lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf Datei: lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf Zugriff: 2022-06-16 10:43:18.769291459 +0200 FYI: "Zugriff" is access time in german Reboot was at 10:45, access time is 10:43. Is it correct to conclude that the file has not been read during bootup? Or am I overlooking something? To further elaborate I did another test on a test.txt file. Procedure: 1. touch test.txt 2. stat test.txt -> correct access time from touch 3. cat test.txt 4. stat test.txt -> access time changed due to cat - fine 5. cat test.txt 6. stat test.txt -> still the same access time as in step 4 - caching? 7. reboot 8. cat test.txt 9. stat test.txt -> STILL the same access time as in step 4 - WTF? Expectations: 1) After a reboot there is no cache to read from. 2) The cat command accesses the file. 3) Stat shows the time of "cat" in the access time stamp. But 3) does not happen. More precisely: It only happens sometimes. Question 3: Could someone please explain to me what's going on here with stat? Thanks, Christoph

No, these files don't exist ;-) I changed the name to foo.png in the email because the original name contained information I didn't want to share. But yes, the directory exists (initial install was Debian 8) and the files referenced also exist. > This works for me > $ cat lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf > [greeter] > background = /usr/share/desktop-base/spacefun-theme/login/background.svg My original file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf actually contained a lot of lines with comments about the options. I copied only the relevant stuff (what I _believed_ was relevant) into the email. > Try installing lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings > I get a lot of error messages but it did change the background for me. It works. The settings editor removed everything else from the file and now there's only those two lines left. I'm really curious to find out what in the original file caused problems. I'll restore it from my backup and check that. Thanks! Christoph
Looking for a generic drag and drop gui for custom commands
Dear all, I'd like to "automate" a couple of tasks that I (until now) do on the command line manually. Examples include splitting of video files using ffmpeg, run backups with specific parameters, display checksums(md5), etc. I'm tired of typing the same long commands that I often need to look up in my wiki and just replace one or two parameters, usually just the file names. So I was thinking about writing an application which will do just what I want. But then I thought: Maybe someone did that already! ;-) So that's my question: Is there a kind of generic drag and drop gui for custom commands? My idea is that I'd start up the gui and select a task (e. g. split a video file). A command line will be loaded (maybe from a config file) with placeholders for input, output and other parameters. I will then drag some file on the gui and the filename will be used as a parameter, in this case as the input file. Then I will click some run button, which executes the command. Ideally the output and exit code will be displayed. Any hints will be appreciated. Thanks, Christoph

The program is meant to be used by myself – to simplify my life / workflow. So you could call it a hobby. And I haven't done programming for a couple of months, which I would like to do now. And I would enjoy to learn something new (QT in this case). I've just installed the QT Designer this morning, clicked around for a couple of minutes and managed to get the window displayed with python (PyQT / Pyside2). The next step will be to get the drop functionality working. After that, I will put some predefined command statements in the list of selectable tasks. Then I'll go for the argument replacement and with that in place, I have a working tool. Everything else will be "nice to have". But I'll soon figure out it's annoying to only have predefined commands, so I will add some configuration file whicht might be editable from the gui. That's my plan for now. Thanks for your support, Christoph

That ssound like a good idea and close to what I want to achieve, but it doesn't seem to work in XFCE. When I drop some a file on a desktop file ("starter") that is associated with my testdnd.sh script, the script doesn't get any input: testdnd.sh #!/bin/bash echo 'testdnd.sh' echo 'First two arguments:' echo -n '$1: ' echo $1 echo -n '$2: ' echo $2 echo 'Standard Input: ' while read line do echo "$line" done < "${VAR:-/dev/stdin}" read end When I drag a text file on the starter / desktop file, the mouse cursor displays a '+' Symbol, as if the starter accepts that file. But when I drop it, I get neither parameters nor standard input (that's what I expect). output testdnd.sh First two arguments: $1: $2: Standard Input: end In contrast, when I call the script from the command line, it gives me both, parameters and stdin: $ cat test.txt | ./testdnd.sh a b testdnd.sh First two arguments: $1: a $2: b Standard Input: This is a multiline text file > The above works for me with LXDE. Though you don't get to edit > parameters to you scripts, just pass files to them. It doesn't work for me. Am I doing something wrong? Anyway, this wouldn't be an optimal solution. In some cases I need to pass multiple arguments in a specific order. For example an audio and video file that should be combined into a single .mp4 file. Christoph

To my shame I have to admit that I was missing the %F (or %U) in my desktop starter file. Now with '%F' I can drag and drop, the programm accepts the argument, but only one. When I give two arguments (select two files from the desktop, drag and drop them on the starter), xfce will spawn two instances, even though I used capital '%F'. I've asked a question in the xfce forums about this: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=60260 > This is what I did to test, including some code to distinguish audio > files from extension. (The 'file' command would probably be best for > testing file type properly, never used this though.) Thanks for your audio/video code, but I *really* want a gui that will handle stuff in a more generic way. Your example inpired me to "auto sort" the arguments if there are multiple that need to be in exact order. That would be a super feature for the really lazy "grab all - drop all" users ;-) Actually I've got the basic idea implemented already (using Python/QT). The GUI lets me select the task from a list (by files in a configuration directory) and load the "command template" from that file. The program will then substitue the placeholders with my drag and drop arguments. For now I can combine/split video files and also upload files to a server using scp and interactivly ask for a password (spawned a terminal running bash). And of course I have a "hello argument" test ;-) There are plenty of ideas how to improve the program. The source code is still quite dirty (it's more a proof of concept at the moment). But I might decided to release it in case some of my friends find it useful ;-) Best regards, Christoph

But after some experiences of being nasty with other people, ruining relationships for almost nothing, I've come to the conclusion that "Assume good faith" as mentioned in the Debian Code of Conduct is a much better strategy to deal with issues of that kind. In many cases I've often found that my initial judgement (he's lazy, nobody needs that feature, etc.) was wrong and it was a good idea not to express my opinion. In other cases I find myself to be right. Usually there's no need to point to that. People expose their faults (lazyness, etc.) themselves - sooner or later. sporadic successfull mount of nfs with Stretch
Hello, we've some problems with Debian stretch which try to mount nfs4 shares at boot-time, sometimes it works and sometimes not. If its not mounting during start I can mount it after I login without problems. A successfull (re)boot look like [1] and a (re)boot which doesn't mount the shares look like [2]. For me it looks like that it comes to a race condition and it try to mount it without a working networkstack. the /etc/fstab looks like: srv-storage:/scratch /scratchnfs defaults0 2 srv-storage:/home /data/home nfs defaults0 2 I also try to use _netdev as mountoptions, but it didn't work. Has anyone an idea how to solve this? best regards Stefan [1] https://debianforum.de/forum/pastebin/?mode=view&s=40729 [2] https://debianforum.de/forum/pastebin/?mode=view&s=40728

Hello, thanks a lot for this interesting discussion. As stated before I used documentviewer and xpdf. As a consequence of this discussion I tried evince and mupdf. They did not solve the problem. I did not try atril and okular because for those I would have to install so much extra stuff that I probably will use only in this context. Thus I do not know whether they would solve the problem. My conclusion: This seems to be the result of generating the pdf file under Windows. To read the file I have to use the latest version of the Acrobat Reader. Thus I will continue to use Windows in the few cases I get such a document. Thanks a lot. K.D.J.
Fwd: alternative Firmware for BMC's

does btrfs have a feature?
Hello, I'm just just curious. In the beginning of btrfs, most blogs, websites, magazins said btrfs will be THE next standard linux filesystem, so now after araound 10years it doesn't look so good, or? Who use btrfs in production? What do you think - does have btrfs a feature (because ZFS on Linux is more and more stable, RedHat said we don't want btrfs anymore and focus to xfs) I use btrfs on some new bare-metal machines for the root-disks, because it has a build-in RAID1 and snapshots, I know LVM and md-raid have also this possibilities but in btrfs it is much easier. I don't use it for data or other things(mail, database, etc), cause it is slow compared to ext4/xfs. I'm also wondering why the hell btrfs don't support ssd's for caching like zfs. thanks for you opinions! best regards Stefan

Did you think that "only" the RAID5/6 problem is the reason why btrfs is not so common? what is with the performance? and some (important) featrures (not futures ;) ) are missing to catch up ZFS. best regards Stefan (sorry for my bad english) > Gesendet: Dienstag, 14. I guess it is the very poor performance, so you cant use it as backend fileserver, amilserver etc, and you also can't SSDs for caching like ZFS do. The only thing where you can use btrfs is for / (root) nothing more because for that you don't need much performance. If they fixed that performance thing (up to ext4 level), then btrfs will have chance. > Btrfs's killer feature, imo, is its Copy-On-Write features yep you're right, specially the Snapshot thing, you can use it before you make upgrades (I think the new Linux Mint version does that). best regards Stefan > Gesendet: Mittwoch, 15. Re: Slow XFS write
Hello, did you really need the hardware controller? I suggest to use Software/MD raid, ob btrfs with raid1 or zfs with raidz1 On Wednesday, August 22, 2018 11:41:08 AM CEST Martin LEUSCH wrote: > Hi, > > > I have a NFS server with a hardware RAID5 on 3 HDD of 6 TB.
