can't upgrade/re-install pkgs
If you reply to this please cc me thanks. Maybe there's a better way to do this? I'm trying to get my system working right (Debian3.0 w/k7 kernel) There are some packages and modules that don't work i.e alsa or sound, the screensaver module can't be loaded, and others. So I ran /usr/sbin/base-config I get to this point in the process after the base-config has scanned the cdrom where it no longer seems to recognize the cdrom. That is it did and then it doesn't. And even though My internet connection is up it now won't connect to debian for security upgrades either. I did start the security upgreade process once and it worked then.. Any ideas on this? Here is ismod results ( I have hdd=ide-scsi in my grub boot menu perhaps that's not correct for debian?) And why can't I copy and paste from kword to mozilla in Debian?! deblnx:/home/john# lsmod Module Size Used byNot tainted isofs 24864 0 (autoclean) printer 5696 0 ac973024 0 (unused) ide-tape 49600 0 agpgart30688 0 (unused) keybdev 1696 0 (unused) usbkbd 2944 0 (unused) input 3424 0 [keybdev usbkbd] rtc 5592 0 (autoclean) usb-uhci 21508 0 (unused) usbcore49696 1 [printer usbkbd usb-uhci] ide-scsi7680 0 scsi_mod 86328 1 [ide-scsi] parport_pc 22280 1 (autoclean) lp 6496 0 (autoclean) parport23360 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp] unix 13636 78 (autoclean) ide-disk6816 2 (autoclean) ide-probe-mod 8096 0 (autoclean) ide-mod 131404 2 (autoclean) [ide-tape ide-scsi ide-disk ide-probe-mod] ext3 57248 1 (autoclean) jbd35640 1 (autoclean) [ext3] deblnx:/home/john# Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main kdelibs3 4:2.2.2-13.woody.8 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main ark 4:2.2.2-9.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main libarts 4:2.2.2-13.woody.8 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main libkmid 4:2.2.2-13.woody.8 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main noatun 4:2.2.2-8.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main libarts-mpeglib 4:2.2.2-8.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main artsbuilder 4:2.2.2-8.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main mpeglib 4:2.2.2-8.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main balsa 1.2.4-2.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main libcupsys2 1.1.14-5 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Media Change: Please insert the disc labeled 'debian 3.0 dvd' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main cupsys-pstoraster 1.1.14-5 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main cupsys 1.1.14-5 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main cvs 1.11.1p1debian-8.1 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main fetchmail 5.9.11-6.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main fetchmail-common 5.9.11-6.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main glibc-doc 2.2.5-11.5 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main gs-common 0.3.3.0woody1 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main idle-python2.1 2.1.3-3.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main idle 2.1.3-3.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http' (-3) Err http://security.debian.org stable/updates/main kab 4:2.2.2-9.2 Something wicked happened resolving 'security.debian.org:http
Can't mount cdrom
I am running debian 3.0 on an Athlon... Still trying to get basic functions working after lots of problems w/ x configuration. When I try to mount my cdrom, either from a terminal or graphically I get; mount fs type iso9660 not supported by kernal. The cdrom is listed in /etc/fstab. What am I doing wrong here? Also I cannot configure my modem. Its listed correctly in /etc/ppp/peers but if I enter "pon" at a terminal I just get a message to edit the aforementined file. My modem works in Mandrake/SuSe. If anyone can help-great. I'd like to actually use Debian. option '/dev/ttyS4' debianlnx:/dev# /dev/ttyS4 is the correct location of my pci modem. It is not a winmodem. It is recognized by Mandrake & and, when I had it om my system, SuSE. Can't get modem recognized
Although I am able to use the modem in Mandrake & SuSE I can't get Debian 3.0 to see the modem. It (the modem ) is located at /dev/ttyS4. I used ppp config to set up and the info is in there correctly. KPPP doesn't work and when I use pon at a terminal window I get a message that says 'unrecognized option /dev/ttyS4'. Why can't I set this up in debian? Do I have to actually move the modem from the pci slot it's in? Can't get modem recognized Pt 2
To follow up (I had provided some of this in an earlier post-sorry I didn't include it in the recent one) This modem is not a winmodem it is an internal PCI slot modem located at /dev/ttyS4. I have been unable to figure out how to get it recognized. Looking in /dev I don't see a /ttyS4 I tried to copy and rename another similar file but that doesn't work. Any suggestions?? Maybe the other distros you tried came with a precompiled kernel with a winmodem driver. If it is not a winmodem check your serial configuration, maybe that device does not exist it is /dev/ttyS0 or 1 or 2 Also if it is not a winmodem try minicom and see if you can communicate with the modem or not. There are a lot of web pages about strings you can send to your modem to initialize it, generally ATZ works.. though some modems require more than that to work (my old 28.8 needed more..) re-installation snag wrong mouse selected
I re-installed deb3.0 and it looked great only two pkgs broke. BUT I screwed up and selected the wrong mouse type. Now I can login to a great looking desktop but I can't use it! :( There's a dialog box open at start up ( no big deal) but I can't alt+function key to a terminal/shell. If I could open a shell I could just run xconfig again. Does anyone know if there's some easy way out of this?? Re: re-installation snag wrong mouse selected
Thanks..yes I know the command to reconfigure the xserver & mouse. I just can't get a terminal window to open. Well I did actually in Gnome but there was a dialogue box in front of the shell and I couldn't see the terminal window. After hobbling about the desktop with an erratic mouse and then just the tab an arrow keys I must have done more damage to the system because now the keyboard doesn't work in debian either. It works fine in SuSe, (where I'm writing this from). I don't believe that one mistake means I need to to do yet another re-install.oh well. Thanks to everyone. I was able to resolve this snag I did finally get an open view of the shell in kde and reconfigured-whew! Debian is great!! pppd daemon dies
Hi Can anyone give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong? I keep getting failure to authenticate messages. the following is from the kppp details box: Sep 26 05:42:22 deblnx pppd[1178]: The remote system is required to authenticate itself Sep 26 05:42:22 deblnx pppd[1178]: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so. Sep 26 05:42:22 deblnx pppd[1178]: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.) I went to kde/kppp site and read there that commenting out the 'auth' line in /etc/ppp/otions could be a fix but it wasn't. grub setup is driving me crazy
Hi I am very grateful for the community here and I appreciate the help I received. I will be trying to get my internet connection going when I reboot into debian. Which brings me to my issue of the moment :( I really have tried so many things to be able to boot from the grub SuSE installs (version .92) I think. Currently I boot from a floopy. I read the grub editing procedure which is made to sound simple but I can not get debian to boot froom grub. I have edited /boot/grub/menu.1st every way I can think of/copy from other how-tos. At best I get a filesystem not found. I had been getting a start up and then 'kernel panic'. The specifics, sorry, its early in the morning and I have just thrown the damn SuSE manual against the floor, Debian 3.0 is on hdb5 my 2nd hard drive. I know that grub numbers drives starting from 0 so hdb5 = (hd1,4). This is my current (not working) /boot/grub/menu.1st debian listing: title debian3.0 kernel (hd1,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=dev/hdb5 initrd (hd1,4)/initrd I have tried putting /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-k7 for the kernel with video parameters and not. I have tried /boot/loader, chainloader with the device and +1. I did have debian install a loader to the partition just not to the MBR. I wish I could have figured this out myself. The SuSE manual makes setting up grub sound easy. --- ***Protect your PC from local E-Mail Application security holes*** ***Maintain your Privacy - MS Passport Free*** ***Anti SPAM "Whitelist" feature*** http://www.x-mail.net Web Based E-Mail, accessible anywhere Voice Messages, Voice Calls (VoIP), Video Conferencing, Live Chat, X-Mail Messenger, Personal Web Hosting, 128 bit SSL Secure, Calendar, Bookmarks, Forwarding, Virtual Mail Map Aliasing X-Mail Premium: 20MB Messages, 100MB Storage, SMTP, POP3, Ad Free --- Anonymous Web Surfing http://www.snoopblocker.com Search http://www.teradex.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: pppd daemon dies follow-up
I seem to be batting zero. So I'll take a break. And come back to it. Adding noauth from kppp or internet dialer as described below just got me a 'ppp daemon died unexpectedly' message and the details box said that noauth is only available to root. removing noauth from the kppp setup (I edited /etc/ppp/options with 'noauth') gets me a connecting to network message...but it ain't so! I don't get any error messages but there is no connection. the browsers just say 'can't find the url'. lynx however says there is no connection. When I type pon highstream.net the modem dials up (as it does with kppp and wvdial) then it just sits there. No messages. when I type poff the terminal message is no pppd running and none stopped. Re: pppd daemon dies
I don't know minicom at all. I've never used it. I have been thinking that I'm an idiot lately since I can't resolve this problem. I don't think it has anything to do with my isp or I wouldn't be able to connect with SuSE 8.1 & (yuck) Win ME, and tonight I installed slackware 9.0 just 15 minutes ago, probably to prove I have some brain cells left, and I plugged in my info and here I am using slack and on the internet. I'm not looking for flame. I just don't know what more to do with kppp or pppconfigure; /etc/ppp/options-pap-secerets chap. I have looked at and edited more files read more man pages..yadda yadda. I will reboot into deb and set up debug as someone else here recommended. We'll see thanks again to all this has been a real hard to figure out problem. Re: pppd daemon dies is a permissions problem? help?
Hi, I did the following: Copy /etc/ppp/peers/provider as /etc/ppp/peers/orcon and edit the file 'orcon' to suit (e.g. include 'noauth', and in my case comment out the sample chat script # connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider" ) Then, to use the 'call' option with Kppp, just do Setup -> (Orcon Internet) -> Edit -> pppd arguments -> [type in:] call orcon -> Add Hope I've got this right. cr and got this response from internet dialer/kppp: Sep 3023:00:23 deblnx ppd(1626): Can't open options file /etc/ppp/peers/highstream.net: Permission denied I know that this is a permissions problem, now, But I don't know how to fix it. I have tried a chmod ug +x on the file 'highstream.net" but that didn't work. I can't imagine that I need to change permissions or owner for the whole file listing. What is the answer to this please? Re: pppd daemon dies is a permissions problem? failure
I never dreamed that this would be such a difficult problem.I added myself to the dip group (perhaps I was already there because the number beside my user name (in /etc/group)was 1000. Anyway I added myself to pppusers and dialout too. And the very same message: "Can't open options file /etc/ppp/peers/highstream.net: Permission denied" appears. I did a chown 777 on the whole string of files but still the same error message. Yes I am discouraged. Thanks for the help and if anyone has any ideas I still will give it a shot. I'm out of ideas. I tried some other things like 1) uncommenting the auth line in /etc/ppp/options> I tried to apt-get install ppp and the response was the current version is the most recent. I ran linuxconf and made sure I was in the ppp group-I am. I also uncommented debug in /etc/ppp/ttyS4 options. That's my modem. When I ran kppp this time, as a regular user the message from kppp was: "timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up". Sorry John I some how sent this 1st message toy ou instead of to the list. I only realized it when the post didn't appear. My apologies. I entered the password I use to login with my isp; saved the configuration and exited. pppd daemon
I spent some time reading pppd man8 and after experimenting with /etc/ppp/options I found that commenting out the "connect" line gave me an appearance of kppp connecting. By-the-way I have checked permissions and they seem to be ok. So kppp's statistics box shows activity both in the bottom graph and in the virtual modem lights. When I open lynx though and arrow down to google I get "Alert: unable to connect to remote host" Mozilla's dialogue box just says whatever url I type or click on in debians local page "...could not be found check the name and try again." And yes I have tried to dialout many times. I'm getting a little punchy with this problem. Sorry about the email foul ups. Should I try to reinstall the dialout or whatever software group debian calls it with taskel? . Connection with pppd?
Hello All, On the advice of those more expert, about this site, I am starting a new thread. Anyway the problem has changed. I have looked at permissions on the /etc/ppp/peers/highstream.net file. I didn't copy that file ( I'm switching back and forth from SuSE to debian). (I need a common /home?) But for the above file everyone: u g o has x-execute privledge. Doing whoami ; grep dip /etc/group got the reponse: dip:x:30:john. I'm john. Let me describe the present situation. Now when I use kppp to dial out there are no error messages. The kppp statistics box shows a graph what appears to be connection and the virtual modem lights flash. I thought that this was a false connection because lynx reported that it couldn't connect and mozilla also couldn't find any url's typed or clicked on from the debian local page. But when I opened a terminal and did poff kppd (which was running gave me a pppd died message and a long list (which follows) of what had gone on from the start of connection. Re: pppd daemon
Yeah I knew I left ping on too long..I wasn't sure if it exited on its own. I'm wondering if the exit status isn't the result of my finally doing ctrl-c ? Anyway I do appreciate the help-this has been one pain to resolve. I will check permissions on /etc/ppp/ip-up.d and recently there have been no error messages when using pon (not that I remember) but I'll try again. I don't know how many scripts there are in the file /ip-up.d but I will try what you recommended. Unless of course the permissions check produces something. I also wonder if I could just copy my SuSE ip-up.d files to debian? Although they might not be compatible. Thanks again. WOW thanks for taking me under your "wing". I'm actually online, here, courtsey of, ta da, DEBIAN! I looked in /etc/ after doing touch /etc/resolv.conf and the file had a "?" on it I though that was a bad sign however once I connected it changed (no "?" on the file now) I also have 22, yes twenty-two files, in /etc, named resolv.conf.ppp.temp with 4 digit numbers after the "temp". I can boot SuSE and windoze. Also entering grub from the command line and doing "root (" didn't get me disks/disk info. Would lilo be easier to set-up? Debian is on hdb5 a logical partition. Re: Questions about using the mailing lists
Hello, I am responding to this because I have online email and have been removed from the debian-users list even though I know my account was not over capacity. I have a graphical representation of how much of my inbox I'm using and I never let it get more than 50% but I have been removed from the list several times. So you're not the only one this happens to. Grub, need to change fstab?
Hi, I've been messing with grub without accomplishing much, accept an occasional kernel panic, error fs not found and an hour or more rescuing my system. I let grub do most of the work on the configuration that follows and it actually boots debian, with the SuSE kernel!!! Damn I think I understand that since it plugged in the only drive/partition it sees. I'm thinking that I need to add my other drive /dev/hdb and its partitions to fstab. BUT altering fstab can be fatal to the os, I've learned the hard way, so how would I do that? Thanks Oh and I have had the correct partitions listed in grub/menu.1st, but it can't find the filesystem(s) on hdb. gfxmenu (hd0,4)/message color white/blue black/light-gray default 0 timeout 8 title linux kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 vga=791 initrd (hd0,4)/initrd title floppy root (fd0) chainloader +1 title failsafe kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz.shipped root=/dev/hda7 ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic 3 initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.shipped title windows_me root (hd0) chainloader +1 makeactive title debian3.0 kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb5 title slackware9.0 kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2 --- ***Protect your PC from local E-Mail Application security holes*** ***Maintain your Privacy - MS Passport Free*** ***Anti SPAM "Whitelist" feature*** http://www.x-mail.net Web Based E-Mail, accessible anywhere Voice Messages, Voice Calls (VoIP), Video Conferencing, Live Chat, X-Mail Messenger, Personal Web Hosting, 128 bit SSL Secure, Calendar, Bookmarks, Forwarding, Virtual Mail Map Aliasing X-Mail Premium: 20MB Messages, 100MB Storage, SMTP, POP3, Ad Free --- Anonymous Web Surfing http://www.snoopblocker.com Search http://www.teradex.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Grub, latest adventure
Hi, This is my latest menu 1st. It doesn't work. Mostly I just boot whatever I want from floppy. SuSE (the 1st entry titled "linux" does boot) Maybe windows does now too. I haven't checked that since my most recent editing. I did enter "grub" at a terminal window, and when I typed "root (' the response was "selected disk does not exsist" When I typed 'kernel /' I got "invalid device requested". I also found I could produce the same error (error 15: file system not found) which is what I get now at start up when I click debian or slack, by entering 'kernel /boot/vmlinuz and the correct path. I do not know what's wrong. gfxmenu (hd0,4)/message color white/blue black/light-gray default 0 timeout 8 title linux kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 hdd=ide-scsi vga=791 initrd (hd0,4)/initrd title floppy root (fd0) chainloader +1 title failsafe kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz.shipped root=/dev/hda7 ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic 3 initrd (hd0,4)/initrd.shipped title windows root (hd0,0) chainloader (hd0,0)+1 makeactive title debian3.0 root (hd1,4) kernel (hd1,4)/vmlinuz-2.4.18-k7 root=/dev/hdb5 hdd=ide-scsi vga=791 initrd (hd1,5)/initrd-2.4.18-k7 title slackware9.0 root (hd1,1) kernel (hd1,1)/vmlinuz-2.4.20 root=/dev/hdb2 hdd=ide-scsi vga=791 initrd (hd1,1)/initrd-2.4.20 --- ***Protect your PC from local E-Mail Application security holes*** ***Maintain your Privacy - MS Passport Free*** ***Anti SPAM "Whitelist" feature*** http://www.x-mail.net Web Based E-Mail, accessible anywhere Voice Messages, Voice Calls (VoIP), Video Conferencing, Live Chat, X-Mail Messenger, Personal Web Hosting, 128 bit SSL Secure, Calendar, Bookmarks, Forwarding, Virtual Mail Map Aliasing X-Mail Premium: 20MB Messages, 100MB Storage, SMTP, POP3, Ad Free --- Anonymous Web Surfing http://www.snoopblocker.com Search http://www.teradex.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The above setting now boots debian. Grub needed the correct file and it was /boot/initrd.img-xxx. I don't get a start up log while debian is booting and I don't understand that. Slackware doesn't seem to have a initrd. I did a whereis but only got the /usr/man/man4/initrd.4.gz file which I tried but loading failed with a kernel panic. As for the floppy entry in grub it was automatically put in by SuSE's installer. The floppy will boot any of the 3 linuxes from the grub floppy listing, but it does say something like entire device is fat.I guess I could take out the chainloader +1 entry? And windows does boot with the entry I posted previously and haven't changed. BTW /sbin/grub = no such file or directory. Thanks again. No start up-boot messages
Hi, I don't get a start up log while debian is booting > and I don't understand that. Does someone know what, if any, line in my menu ist (posted below) would cause the start up log to be blanked? Re: Grub
Hello, I booted from the floppy, and I found (with uname -r) that my computer is running the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel (vmlinuz) with initrd.img-2.4.18-k7. There is no other initrd in boot so it has to be the k7. I have an athlon cpu and chose the k7 kernel during install. Somehow though I'm running the bf2.4. I can change the grub listed to reflect that. Or I could try to get the k7 kernel to work. What's the right way and is there something weird/wrong about having these two different listings for boot? Also the vga=791 line blanks out the start up, booting messages. It works in SuSE and slack but not Debian. Quoting "Jerome R. Thanks for the support. I think the real issue here is that in using the k7 kernel I have a internet connection issue (again). I guess I just have to sort that out As I said before the SuSE installer automatically configured alot of things in grub, which I copied. I'll try the vga=ask Thanks again.. Quoting "Jerome R. Hi, After getting grub to work and booting with the k7 kernel rather than the bf2.4 the DNS problem returned..or that's what I think I'm seeing-basically a conection that doesn't work. So I ran plog, I got an exit status 1; I put exit 0 in the 6 scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: not replacing existing default route to tap0 [0.0.0.0] Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: local IP address 67.75.63.145 Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: remote IP address 63.215.27.35 Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: primary DNS address 209.244.0.3 Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: secondary DNS address 209.244.0.4 Oct 13 12:34:57 deblnx pppd[1328]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up started (pid 1369) Oct 13 12:34:58 deblnx pppd[1328]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 1369), status = 0x0 deblnx:/home/john# deblnx:/home/john# ls -l /etc/ppp/ip-up.d total 24 -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 969 Oct 13 12:26 000usepeerdns -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 2466 Oct 13 12:27 0dns-up -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 831 Oct 13 12:30 1wwwoffle -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 92 Oct 13 12:33 exim -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 246 Oct 13 12:33 fetchmail -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 230 Oct 13 12:34 leafnode after removing the 'exit 0' from exim (this time I did it in the order of ls -l ) I got a: deblnx:/home/john# plog Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: not replacing existing default route to tap0 [0.0.0.0] Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: local IP address 67.75.62.176 Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: remote IP address 63.215.27.33 Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: primary DNS address 209.244.0.3 Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: secondary DNS address 209.244.0.4 Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up started (pid 1780) Oct 13 12:45:55 deblnx pppd[1739]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 1780), status = 0x1 This is what's in exim: #!/bin/sh # Flush exim queue if [ -x /usr/sbin/exim ]; then /usr/sbin/exim -qf fi I'm just doing what I remembered from the help I got before. Re: return of DNS problem-pppd daemon
Hi, I did not compile the kernel. as I said the bf2.4 kernel was working . I have an athlon cpu and thought I was running with the k7 kernel because that's what I selected during installation. I had been booting with a floppy though so when i got grub working correctly I began using the k7 kernel and then saw a return of a problem (pppd/dns) that I had earlier. At the time Pigeon helped me with getting the problem solved. PPP must be enabled because of the plog results..no? Re: return of DNS problem
Hi, Yeah I thought of that (resov.conf being a directory rather than a file) but it is a file. I meant to include that in the post and forgot. I'll run the command just to be sure though. You have the command as ls-ld /etc/resov.conf is the 'd' in there a typo? I thought it was ls-l. I changed some permissions but it didn't fix the problem. I did notice that pon highstream.net doesn't produce anything-no modem dial. kppp does get the modem to dial. Thank you all. You folks are TOPS!! I did an apt-get remove diald and manually removed /var/cache/diald and it works!! my shell knowledge is at a fledgling level so thamks for all the help. I hope I wasn't too much of a bother. I went to the archives to look at the thread. I am off the list again. I can't always check my mail every couple of hours. Most of the problem is the swen. ( I must get a hundred and fifty messages that look like they're from microsoft, daily) Using online email and x-mail's filters don't block anything that I can tell. Perhaps I'll find another ,better, email solution. Thanks again I really do appreciate your help. If anyone wants to email me on this and/or email ideas-I'm open. Xserver
Hi I am new to debian, but have used those big commercial distros. I installed 3.0 but am not having any luck getting X to start. I reinstalled several times taking a lot of time checking the packages. But login just leaves me at the command line. I type startx and get this response: Build Operating system: linux 2.4.17i686 (ELF) module loader present (==) log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", (EE) Unable to locate/open config file (EE) Error from xf86Handle Config File () Fatal Server error no screens found XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server "0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. This is happening on a athlon (900mhz) homebuilt. I haven't had any display/X server problems with SuSe or Mandrake. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks Oh I just remembered the command line message says to get system message from /var/log/XFree86.0.log but I looked and that file doesn't exsist. --- ***Protect your PC from local E-Mail Application security holes*** ***Maintain your Privacy - MS Passport Free*** ***Anti SPAM "Whitelist" feature*** http://www.x-mail.net Web Based E-Mail, accessible anywhere Voice Messages, VoIP, Video Conferencing, Live Chat, X-Mail Messenger, Personal Web Hosting, 128 bit SSL Secure, Calendar, Bookmarks, Forwarding, Virtual Mail Map Aliasing X-Mail Premium: 20MB Messages, 100MB Storage, POP3, Ad Free --- Anonymous Web Surfing http://www.snoopblocker.com Search http://www.teradex.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Xserver follow-up + thanks!
Wow! I finally got to boot into my desktop! Thanks very much for this mail list, and the community here. Nick's response to my problem really helped. I recommend to anyone with xserver problems to have another look at those messages. (I saw there were some questions here). I still have an inability to connect to the internet with debian. I can't manually enter my modems port which is /dev/ttyS4. Some of the other distro let me do that. I know this port is not standard, but I didn't know that when I built/put together this computer. I also can't setup login/logout even though I click the modify button in the desktop app (and become root) changes don't take effect.I don't know why? For now I have to halt or reboot from a terminal. Re: Home brew
I'm just a novice with Linux-better with hardware, I guess. I put together a Athlon 900Mhz machine and I only run Linux on it. It wouldn't be hard to install XP, but I'm anti Microsoft. (a former Mac user) I had little problem putting together/selecting the components. Try computergeeks.com they usually list which components are compatible with linux. I also like mwave.com because they have a testing and match-up system for motherboards that is very good.My only snag was getting a winmodem (I was trying to be frugel and didn't know it was a winmodem until I received it. But now days there is software that will allow winmodems to work. Thats what I'm using right now. Good luck it can be done. Oh, by the way going through the internet and the merchants I mentioned I build my computer for less than 1/2 the price range you mentioned. One more thing there is an older issue of smart computing that gives most of the details to assembling your own computer. Try a library or their back issues. Re: line width +
I changed the character width on the webmail I use to 72. Let me know if this is acceptable. Sorry if it was causing problems. Also as I've been following some of the responses: many winmodems can now be used with Linux. I don't have the site that supplies that info at my fingertips but if someone is interested I'll dig for it. Quoting "Karsten M.
