Keyboard-driver-bug ???

2007-03-19 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

I discovered something, which seems to be a bug. Maybe someone can verify it.
In the moment I cannot test it in amd64 (my Server is down), can someone else
do it ?

Can someone verify thIs bug, too ?

Description:

The keyboard periodically switches into "Shift-modus", and some seconds later
back. This is since the last update 2 days ago.

I checked the logs, but there is nothing to discover.

Description end

Thanks for help !

Keyboard-driver-bug ??? (Update)

2007-03-19 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

I found out, that the described bug is created by KDE. It appears only, when
the keyboard, choosen by KDE in controlcenter and activated, differs from the
one in xorg.conf.

Maybe this might help. If someone knows, which package is responsible for it,
he might inform the KDE developers. I try myself, too.

Thanks for help !

rsync, ssh, scp: How to send via eth1 or higher ?

2006-07-28 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

is there any way, to send files over a device greater than eth0 ?

If eth0 is online, ssh, scp and rsync always wants to send over eth0. In the
manpages I found no way to change it.

(Background: I have wired cable on eth0 and wireless on eth1. You might
say: "Just change it !" But as I work on different places, then I have
continously to change. What a mess)

Best regards

Hans

This problem happened in the past already. My solution was (but please check,
what you are doing), to get into /var/cache/apt/archives and install the libc
manually with the --force-all option.

i.e.

dpkg --force-all -i libcxx.deb

But you should know, what you are doing !

Language of Website

2007-06-11 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi webmasters/maintainers,

since half a year the Debian (www.debian.org) site shows the English language
as default. It should be in German, as konqueror is configured to German
language. On all other sites this is working perfectly, the only site it does
not is the Debian site.
Did I miss something ? In earlier times this worked correctly.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Thilo,

it should work. Please check:

1, Build the kernel-module (just use the souurces of the Debian-repository)

2. Install the module ans make shure it is loaded (add it in /etc/modules)

3, Install the package "nvidia-glx"

4. Remove /etc/init.d/kdm, /etc/init.d/gdm and/or /etc/init.d/xdm

5. reboot, it makes sure, TLS ist set correctly

6. Check it, with the command: "startx" at the prompt.

Now you can see, why it does not worl.

Remeber: Users must be in group "video" and maybe "nvidia"

Good luck and best regards

Well, this is just for stesting. So you can see, why something does not start.
kdm and similar hides the errors.

With startx you can see them,. Later, when everything works fine, just move
the binaries back.

If I look for errors, I want always know everything. :)

This does not work with i.e. ATI-.driver ! When you stop kdm, then the screen
becomes black and you cannot see anything.

That is exactly, what I intended to forbid: starting kdm.

With removing the window-login-manager you can see everything, you can
manually load the kernel-module, then start X, and finally, you can see what
happns during starting X, even things, /etc/Xorg.log does not show. This way
I could find out, that my fglrx-driver switches to software rendering. This
never appeared in any log.

I do not intend to excuse my way, but IMO it is the best way to find ourt,
what really happens.

Well, meanwhile Thilo got his system working, so it is not necessary any more
to talk about these problems. I guess, everybody has his own way, of
troubleshooting. For me this way has proved to be the best. :))

Strange libs

2013-08-31 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

since 3 weeks I got two new directories, which is looking strange for me.
These are /lib64 and /libx32. The second one was created by package
"libc6-x32", but I cannot see the necessary of this libs.

Can someone enlighten me, when and why this was installed? Must have been
during an upgrade. Should I install it again? (I deinstalled the package).

The other one (/lib64) looks unnecessary for me, too, as there is already
/usr/lib64 available. Ok, FHS might be the reason for it. Am I maybe correct?
If not, a short info would be nice.

Thanks for reading this.

Sorry, but I did not test it, but I tested iTunes (do not know, which version,

However, iTunes is a crap, maybe there is an alternative? If he just wants to

Akonadi / Kmail Problem

2013-09-11 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I am running debian/jessie. After upgrading to kmail2 I discovered, that
randomly (this means wthin one or two days a week), a window pops up, whch
want me to enter the password for my mailaccount. Strangely it is every time
the same mailaccount. I have several ones.

It is no difference, if reenter the correct password or just click the "ok"-
button.

This bvehaviour seem, completely randomly, and could still not be related to a
special event.

Some hints:

1. When this happens, it is regardless, if kmal2 is running or not.

2. This behaviour appears on my 64-bit system as well as on my 32-bit system.

3. Recreating the akonadi database dd not change anything.

4. Do not know if this is important: If kmail is shut down, the akonadi
databases for the mailaccounts are still running. Shouldn't they not be
stopped, when kmail is not runnng any more?

Does anybody notice this behaviour, too? I know, there is already a bugreport
related to a similar behaviour, but I am not sure, if this report is related
to this, too. Hope, someone knows more.

Thanks for reading and maybe some, feedback.

Hi!
Did you try "testdisk"? Nice tool, maybe it helps. You might try also some
other tools for rescueing disks.

Check for some rescue live systems and experience with it. My suggestions are
UBCD4Win and Rescatux. They got nice tools on it.

Also Trinity-Rescue-Kit might be usefull. And last but not least, you might
also try Rescue-is-Possible (R.I.P.). These are all livesystems specialized
for rescueing storage devices.

Maybe you want to take a look at it, and if these do not help, you will learn
a lot when using these.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!

Hi!
Try to boot from a linux livesystem. Then you have access to a lot of rescue
tools. Dependend of the filesystem you want to rescue, you might want to choose
the best option.

My suggestion:

For FAT/NTFS try UBCD4WIN, maybe also Hirens Boot CD.

For those and EXT2/3/4 and other linux based filesystems, I suggest live
systems like Trinity-Rescue-Kit, Rescatux or Rescue-is-Possible. Also GRML is
very good.

These alll content much tools for rescueing systems.

You might also want to look at DEFT-7.2 (32-bit) or DEFT-8 (64-bit).

Good luck

[OT] How to redirect input/output to another console?

2012-09-08 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I know, maybe this is not the right forum, as my question is not really debian
based. But maybe you might want to help either.

I have a friend far away from me, which is using debian/testing same as me. As
I am helping this woman sometimes, and she is willing to learn, I would give
her an option, to see, what I am doing in the shell (input, output and error).

She is also capable working in the shell (but still not very experienced with
it), and so I am looking for a way, that
- either she can see, what I am doing in my shell
- I can see her shell
- or best, we can both work in ONE shell

IMO it is a good way for her, to learn, what is going on.

I know, that the first was possible in the past, but I cannot remember any more
how I did it, it was something with redirecting, Of course I read the manuals,
and searched the web, but I still did not find the best solution, yet.

Any hints are welcome.

Thanks for your help!

Hello list,

thank you all guys and ladies for all the answers, I got.

However, I did not know about tmux, this was new for me. I will test them both

I also think, tmux or screen is very usefull for teaching purposes, so the

I made good expierience, by moving gdm, xdm or kdm (whatever you are using)
just right out of the way. I simply moved it form /etc/init.d/ into my /root
folder.

Then I could manually start X by the command "startx" and could see what
happened.

If X hanges, you can easily stop X by "CTL-C" (STRG-C), or with "CTRL-ALT-

can multiarch break my system?

2012-10-01 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I would like to install wine on my pure 64-bit system. Wine is telling me,
that I need to add i386 architecture on it (dpkg --add-architecture).
Of course I need 32-bit libs.

But before I do this, I want to make sure, that under no circumstances, other
libs, that I need for wine (or some other applications which are pure 32-bit)
are installed at the next update / upgrade.

Does apt or aptitude make sure, that only the needed 32-bit-libs are
installed? And if I want wine to deinstall, do I get rid of all 32-bit-libs,
too?

And last, but not least, is there anything I have to pay attention before
installing 32-bit libs of wine (and others), when I want to use multiarch (I
think of setting some priorities or pinnings at apt or aptitude)?

Thanks for any feedback!

there is also another bugreport by me from earlier times. But I guess, this
reason might be in older kernels, too. At the moment I am running kernek 3.5
from experimental with no errors at all.

However, I think, it is a kernel bug, and is fixed since kernel 3.5.

Here is my old bugeport, which is closed (and reopened by the bugreport you
already know):

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=687046

At the moment, i know no other solution, than to switch to a running 3.2.0
kernel (see in my bugreport, which ran for me), or use 3.5 from experimental.

Goo luck!

please put not all into multiarch!

2012-10-20 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Dear package-teams,

please do not put everything to multiarch! Just let me explain, why I think
so.

As already reported here, many users (and me too) got into a lot of problems,
beccause the 32-bit nvidia drivers are now put into multiarch.

Doing so, several applications, like googleeearth, X-plane and some other 32-
bit stuff, which worked PERFECTLY before, did not run any more.

So I decided, to change to multiarch. Quickly added i386 (dpkg --add-
architecture i386) to my system and did an aptitude update.

But then, when I wanted to install the nvidia-glx package (32-bit), aptitude
messed with several other packages. It wanted to deinstall skype (which is
running perfectly in 64-bit environment), crrsim and some other 32-bit
packages, due to unmet dependencies.

Aptitude wants to deinstall those packages, or forces me, to install a lot of
32-bit libs, which I do not need!

Hmm, as all these apps were working before in amd64 environment, I see no
sense , why to crap my system with a bunch of libs, which I am not needing (as
the apps are already running).

As I said: I just need to install a single package from i386, and do not want
to change my whole system!

Just understand, I do not want to mourne against the idea of multiarch, but I
think, you should not put every 32-bit thingies into i386.

Some packages should be made directly installable from amd64, there are coming
driver into my mind as well as some decent packages (i.e. wine stuff).

For those with the same problem: My workaround for now is just to deinstall
every nvidia package and use the installer from the nvidia site. This let me
install 64-bit and 32-bit driver, and googleearth is happily running again.

Best regards

Hans

Mark, I know, that this multiarch is still on the way to working, However, I
see great power in it. But at the moment, I think, it is no good idea, to put
essential packages into multiarch. Instead they should put those packages
step-by-step into it. My mail aimed to show, what problems appear at the
moment. So others (and first of all the developers) can see, what trouble
appears.

Chris: There is no need, to file a bugreport, as a) it is wanted, to split 64-
bit and 32-bit of nvidia packages and b) it is already recognized in the list
what problems appear.

Hans

Hi all!

What I do not understand: Why does skype want to install lots of new 32-bit
libs, when the package (and this is the 32-bit one) already can use either
ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk (which are also used by other applications).

I suggest this solution: Packages should be built in that way, that they can
use either ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk or the libs from multiarch:i386. If
that is working, then step by step ia32-libs may be made thinned out from
double libs, until ia32-libs are no more necessary at all. At that point the
package ia32-libs can be deleted.

On the other hand, it should be made sure, that 32-bit applications should be
able to use 64-bit libs as much as possible. 32-bit is dying! And in the next
years, it will not be used any more.

Yes, i would kindly like to. Here is the output:

apt-cache policy skype
skype:
  Installiert: (keine)
  Installationskandidat: (keine)
  Versionstabelle:

You should know, that I have installed an older version of 32-bit skype, as
the latest amd64 version is not running very well.

My version is skype-debian_2.2.0.25-1_i386.deb, which I installed by using '--
force-architecture-i386'.

This version is running very well!
I know, the latest version is 4.0.0.1, but as just to confirm: The 2.2. version
is running in a pure amd64-environment very well!

And as soon, as I added multiarch, this one wants to uninstall.

However, as I already told before: I got a solution for this problem for
myself: Just installed the nvidia driver from the nvidia site and evrything
worked perfectly for me again. Although, I think, other people might have more
problems.

Best regards

Hans

You must install nvidia-glx from the i386-repöository. Look in the wiki or
howtos at "multiarch". You have to set up a multiarch environment.

On the other hand you can do as I did (I am lazy). I removed all nvidia-
packages and installed the nvidia-drivers from the nvidia site.

Pay attention, to build the 32-bit part, too.

Good luck!

Spamd: How much memory is normal?

2012-11-28 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

just a little question. I am using spamassassin and bayes. The system is
telling me, that two processes "spamd" are running with each about 600MB. I
guess, this memory is forked and not 1,2 GB.

Anyway, 600MB seems pretty much memory for spamd, but as far as I googled, it
seems ok.

So, are there any experiences by you? It would help me, if other users might
just have a look, how much memory their spamd is using. Of course I am only
interested in normal desktop systems.

Mailservers are not very interesting for me, as they will, of course, use much
more memory!

multiarch - please do not force users to change a running system!

2012-12-07 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I am still fighting with multiarch. On my 64-bit system I have a several 32-bit
applications installed. Just to name the best known: skype and googleearth.

As they are 32-bit, I also installed ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk (and this
already for since a long long time).

Just to make clear: All(!!) 32-bit applications are running fine! All!

But when I switch to multiarch, and add i386 (dpkg --add-architecture i386),
and want to make an upgrade, then debian wants to install a lot(!) of new libs
from i386. Why that? WTF? New libs? They are not needed (as everything is
working well), and I do not want to fill my system with unnecessary stuff!
Never!

On the other hand, if I do NOT change to multiarch, debian wants to deinstall
skype, googleearth, ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk, although they are working
perfectly. There IS no reason, to deinstall them.

I know, the reason is, that ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk are missing
dependencies from i386-repository and without them, skype and googleearth will
deinstall, too.

I see here a big dependency problem. And additionally (and please, pleas), IMO
the kind of doing this way, is not nice.

People are FORCED two ways, either to deinstall their WORKING applications and
change a running system, or to switch to multiarch and get added with lots of
unnessessary libs and stuff!

Again, please apologize, I do not want to anger you, but please allow me to
tell also things, I am not agreeing with.

Maybe there might be a way, to part dependencies between amd64 and i386, and
find a way, to let people decide, how they want to deal with 32-bit and 64-bit
applications.

Have a nice weekend!

Best regards

Hans

Ok, but if they are "reinstalled", then the old libs should be deinstalled.
But they will not. So I have some libs double on my system.

But the new ia32-libs are (if I am not wrong) in the amd64-repository, but
cannot updated, as its dependencies are in i386-repo. That is no good idea.

Re: multiarch - please do not force users to change a running system!

2012-12-08 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Maybe I described my problem not exactly enough. My English might be better.
Let me try again.

1. I have a running amd64 system, which is running 32-bit applications
perfectly (due to ia32-libs)

2. aptitude upgrade wants to deinstall ia32-libs, as there are dependencies in
i386 repo (ia32-libs:386). According to this, it wants also deinstall my 32-
bit applications (i.e. skype or googleearth)

Now I have two choices

1. I can add i386 to the sources list. This will keep and update ia32-libs and
keep my 32-bit apps - but it will install al lot of new (unnecessary) libs,
which I do not need and I do not want to install. It is sure, I do not need
them, as the 32-bit applications are running perfectly as described above.

I do not want to fill my system, with unnecessary libs (keep it simple stupid)

2. I do NOT add i386, then apt / aptitude wants always to deinstall my 32-bit
applications, which means, it will destroy a running system.

I do not want this, I want my system kep running.

IMO this is a dependency problem. My suggestions for a solution:

1. Change the dependencies of ia-32-libs, that they do not depend i386-repo.

2. No amd64 package should depend on a package of i386-repo.

IMO this would solve a lot of problems and people can decide, if they want to
use multiarch or not. At the moment, it looks for me, as people are forced to
use multiarch, if they want to use any 32-bit application.

But this technically not necessary ( as described above) and it is against
freedom of choice.

Best regards

Hans

I am running wheezy. So, if I understood, I have these choices

1. stay with the old ia32-libs (which content all 32-bit libs) and set ia32-
libs to hold

2. convert to multiarch, get an empty (transitional) ia32-libs package and get
all needed and new 32-bit-libs from i386.

Ok, I understood. But last question: Does debian make sure, that I get rid
from the old 32-bit libs included in the old ia32-libs package or do I have to
search them manually, to get a clean system, without double 32-bit libs?

Yes, I know that. But removing (and purge ia32-libs) before change to
multiarch will also remove all 32-bit-apps. But an upgrade will install a
newer package of ia32-libs + stay the 32-bit-apps + install 32-bit-libs from
i386. What happens to the old ones from the former ia32-libs? Will they be
overwritten? Newly linked? Purged?

Of course, I can deinstall and reinstall the 32-bit-apps after moving to
multiarch. But is it really necessary?

Yes, this is how it always was. For these purposes there was "mundus"
developped, but it is still not in debian. I tried mundus today, but it still
lacks. Mundus mourns about too old version of gambas3 from debian, it needs a
newer version of it. However, this is no debian problem at all! Maybe
sometimes it will appear in debian. I can wait. :))

Thanks for your long answer. Well, please don't be angry of my questions. I
know, it might be annoying. However, I tried to switch to multiarch, and of
course, I understood things.

But I also have to admit, that it was not quite easy, to switch to. I learned,
that there are still a lot of dependency problems, as multiarch is still on
the way and new. And do not tell, there are none!

However, I found meanmwhile a solution for me, but besides this, let me also
explain, what things occur.

1. Adding i386 repo wanted to deinstall ia32-libs. Ok, I did and installed
many 32-bit libs. Soi far so well. During the update it did googleearth and
skype.

Ok, I build a new googleearth package, but oh wonder, it needs ia32-libs-*. So
I had to reinstall this package again. Yes, dependency problem!

apt-get -f install reinstalled the needed libs again for googleearth.

The same with the skxpe package (I installed the latest amd64-version) and
needed several amd64-libs, too and - ia32-libs.

But it was not over! I then wnated to install nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx,
and BOTH, 64-bit and 32-bit version. I installed it with DKMS, you know the
way. BUT, the libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 wants to deinstall libxvmc4 amd64-version
(as far as I remember), and doing so, mplayer and some other applications,
which depend on the amd64-version, are also going to deinstalled.

So don't tell me, that there are no dependency problems. There are!

Please notice: I understand, that multiarch work is still in process. I
understand, things must not work perfectly at the moment! I understand,
developers have not much time to fix things at once! I understand, developers,
have a private life! And notice, everything, I pointed at, must NEVER be fixed
at once. There must even not to be a solution at once!

I understand and accept everything in debian. But I do not accept, to tell me,
I do not understand things, when there ARE problems. I read the wiki, I
understood the wiki, but when there are things not ok, no one should be blamed
to tell it.

As I said in my first message: Under no circumstances was it my intention, to
mourne or make someone angry. I wanted to understand, what was not quite
clear. To understand, to find a solution. I found it now!

And here is now the point to say: Thank you very much for all, who helped!
Thank you very much, indeed!

Very best regards

Hans

Hi Martin,

sorry, if I was too harsh in my last mail. Maybe I found not the best English
words. Again, sorry for that.

However, I found a solution indeed.

1. As googleearth package and skype do need ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk
packages, I reinstalled them.

2. The other needed 64-bit-libs and 32-bit-libs, skype and googleearth depend
on, I could install with apt-get -f install.

3. The problem with the 32-bit nvidia accelerator (libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386)

Need to get 6415 kB/6732 kB of archives. After unpacking 32.2 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libxvmc1 : Conflicts: libxvmc1:i386 but 2:1.0.7-1 is to be installed.
 libxvmc1:i386 : Conflicts: libxvmc1 but 2:1.0.7-1 is installed.

Re: Can't boot after harddrive replacement

2014-05-11 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi Itay,

maybe it is a problem with the UUID. Just check on the new harddrive the file
/etc/fstab, if there is an UUID set for the harddrive.

If so, comment it out and set just an entry with /dev/sda1 (or whatever) fpor
the required. Here is an example:

# /dev/sda7 / ext3errors=remount-ro 0 1
UUID=da2bbacb-1b05-461e-8b72-9eef666b9bf6/   ext4
discard,noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

In this case, I commented the line beginning with "# /dev/sda7"
out and the new active one is the line beginning with
"UUID=da2bbacb..."

For your needs, you should mount the partition with /etc/fstab on by using a
live-file system like Knoppix, TRK, Debian-Live-file or similar and then edit
/etc/fstab.

Comment ALL lines beginning with UUID= and add the physical partition like in
my example beginning with /dev/sdaX whatever.

Then you should be able to reboot.

I guess, you already have a bootloader installed, mostly grub or grub2. If
not, Debian installer DVD may help, or use my favourite choice Super-Grub-
Disk-2.

Hope, this helps. Good luck!

Best regards

Hans

You might want to try "webmin" and/or "usermin". But it is no more in the

They said at that time "it is bad coded, with spaghetti-code". But this was 5

To find it, use google, I think, www.webmin.org might be the site.

If this is ok, you might want to try pwmconfig, which is creating the

You see, it wants to mount the wrong device: sdc1 instead of sdd1.

Any ideas, what I can do? Or is this a problem with dbus?

Thanks for any hints!

Re: admin password?

2012-12-31 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi!

I know two ways, how to "crack" a system with a lost root password.

1. Use a livefile-cd like knoppix and mount the partitition witrh /etc/shadow
on.

Then remove everything at root between the first two ::

At next boot, you will not be asked for a root password.

2. Boot with "kon-boot". Google for it and download the image. You can create
a floppy- or a cd-image.

Good luck!

Update hanged, now stuck in loop

2013-02-07 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

during the last upgrade, it stuck during the update of the package "virtuoso-
opensource-6.1".

Now I am sticking in a loop. I cannot deinstall the package, as it wants
configure itself and then hangs up, nor I can reinstall it, as I am running
into the same loop again.

I also tried to download it agarin, but this was not possible, too. My system
believes, it is still downloaded.

However, I downloaded the package manually via FTP, so I have it here on my
harddrive.

When I want to install it, these messages appear:

Any ideas? Or is this a bug? I am running debian/wheezy, amd64.

KDE4 - wrong root password?

2013-03-14 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

since some time I discovered a strange behaviour. Whenever I want to kill a
process, or need root privileges (i.e. with kdesu) and I need to enter my root
password, this is not accepted.

But - when I use the password of the user I am working with in this cases, it
will work. This is very strange! The normal user can do things, that root
cannot do (only in KDE).

I admit, it might be a setting problem in KDE, but I cannot remember, to
configure or change anything related to this behavior.

Can someone give me a clue, what I can check, to get back to normal behavior?

This problem appears only on my amd64-machine, my other two machines are
working fine.

Thank you very much.

Regards

Hans

syslinux, live-build - looking for files

2013-03-23 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I am looking for the following files for wheezy:

ldlinux.c32
libcom32.c32
libutil.c32

They should be in package live-build:

apt-file search ldlinux.c32
live-build: /usr/share/live/build/bootloaders/extlinux/ldlinux.c32
live-build: /usr/share/live/build/bootloaders/isolinux/ldlinux.c32
live-build: /usr/share/live/build/bootloaders/pxelinux/ldlinux.c32
live-build: /usr/share/live/build/bootloaders/syslinux/ldlinux.c32

But there are only a symlink to /usr/lib/syslinux/l*.c32

I suppose the related packages are syslinux and syslinux-common.
If someone got these files somehow maybe from an older installation or another
distribution, it would be nice, if he could send me.

On the other hand it might be a bug? I need those files to create a live-cd.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Hans

Yes, and it seems , these are not in the syslinux packages from kernel.org.
I found only a single rpm packiage of RedHat (version 5.0), which got it into.

This must not be so. Look, In my case I used a self compiled kernel, with very
few modules. And as the only security holes have been in kernel modules, I did
not compile, I needed not to install a new kernel. Those modules were just not
existent. KISS-style. It makes things more secure!

Re: what's your Debian uptime?

2013-04-17 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
It is interesting. Whenever I someone is telling of big uptime, the arguiment
is:

Your server can not be secure! You have an old kernel! You MUST install/update
the newest kernel and of course reboot.

But this is not correct. For which reason a new kernel is necessary?

1. If there are extrem changes in the environment (unsupported new hardware or
major software changes)

2. Security issues

But a kernel can stay very, verry long time. On machines, where you do not
change hard or software (i.e. new filesystems like btrfs), an old kernel will
work perfectly.

Security issues, which affect modules, but not the kernel itself, may not cause
the need of a new kernel. When people lik me and others on this list, are
using a very small kernel, with minimalistic modules, and the security issues
affect modules, which are not built nor installed, then there is no need, to
install a new kernel.

So it is wrong to conclude and to say: Hey, your uptime is high, this
concludes to an unsecure host due to an old kernel. To say so, is a big
mistake!

Just to clear things. :)

Anyway, let's have fun at hacking.

Best regards

Hans

Re: what's your Debian uptime?

2013-04-19 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Whatever I see in all your comments is this:

Most of the people show a big uptime. 100 days, 400 days, 500 days, even more
than a 1000 days! So many people do this. It proves, how stable a good system
can be and it also shows the great work of the developers.

If I compare it to other commercial systems (aka Windows). you can see the
high quality, what people can do, if they like and have fun, what they are
doing.

Money is no garant for quality. It is freedom, it is fun and it is motivation.

So let's all work together, to keep these things.

Let us say to all developers and their helpers:

Thank you very much for all the work and help we got from you!!!

Best regards

Hans

Just add the unstable repo to your sources.list, then do an "apt-get update"
and after this you can install pocketsphinx.

Either do "apt-get install pocketsphinx", or you can install any package by
doing "apt-get install somepackagename/unstable".

Good luck!

You can do "apt-get -d install packagewhatever" from unstable. This will only
download, but NOT install. Once the packages are on your computer, remove the
entries of unstable in sources.list. Now you can install these packages
manually with "dpkg -i packagename.deb"

You can then apt-get update again and then update as normal. To clear the
database you may also try "dpkg --clear-avail", then do a new "apt-get
update".

BTW: I recommend using aptitude instead of apt. It is state-of-the-art and
much better.

Have fun!

Don't do that!

2013-04-23 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Today I learnt this: Do NOT use ext4 for the /boot partition, where your
kernel resides.

I did this on my EEEPC to speed up boot, and today I got at boot the error
message: initrd.img corrupt. My EEEPC has got an ssd inside and /usr, /home
and /var are encrypted partitions.

It took me hours and hours to fix this. First I tried ext2fs, with no success.
I could run Trinity Rescue Kit from a sd card, and I created a chroot, but not
all was possible to do in the chroot.

After lots of tries I got the solution:

1. I backuped all the content of /boot to another drive.
2. Booted with a livefile and formatted /boot to ext2.
3. Restored /boot
4. Edited /etc/fstab, removed the UUID of /boot and removed disacard, noatime
5. Now I could boot again.
6. From the running system started "update-initramfs -u"
7. Did "dpkg-reconfigure linux-base", so I got the UUID in all necessary config
files again.
8. For making all sure. did "update-grub"
9. Finally test, rebooted again, everything was ok.

So NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use ext4 for /boot! Don't do it!
(If I would have read the manual, I should have known, ext4 and grub is still
in experimental state)

Best regards

Looks like nvidia package is blocking things. Try to uninstall nvidia
packages, then try again and reinstall nvidia packages.

If you get in trouble with 32-bit graphical applications like googleearth, I
suggest not to use the nvidia packages, but the nvidia-installer from nvidia's
site.

However, if you do so, do not forget to purge debian nvidia-packages during
uninstall.

Good luck!

You can either delete the kernel module (bad way), or blacklist iit. Look at
/etc(modprobe.d/ and you will find other blacklisted modules.

Just create a new one with the syntax like the othr files.

Googleeartg will not run without 32-bit accelerator drivers. If you use
Nvidia-graphic cards, you should nor use debian packages. They will nt work.
It is a bug!

Try instead the nvidia installer from the nvidia site. But before you install
the driver with this script, make sure, you uninstalled and purged all debian
nvidia stuff.

And of course you need to have a multiarch environment, as googleearth is a
32-bit application.

Good luck!

Yes, sadly it is. Seems no one cared for this till then. It looks like a
problem with libxvmc1, which is needed for 32-bit acceleration.

But, installing this lib will deinstall several other applications, which is
surely not wanted. It is just a dependency problem.

I believe, there is a bugreport related to this, but it is months old.

The best way is just to install the friver with the script from the nvidia
site. Works like a charm.

Maybe complete poweroff might help. Maybe you can unblock it with rfkill.
You might also try to unload the wlan-module and then use rfkill.

I had this problem with 3.2.0-kernel and upgraded to 3.6-kernel from unstable
without any problems.

There is an open bugreport by me, which touches this problem.

No no, don't use apt-get. If you want to install via apt-get, the package must
be in /var/cache/apt/archives.

Just install it with

dpkg -i /path_to_where_the_package_is/googleearth_bla.deb

as root.

Dependencies should then also be shown. If some libs are missing and the
googleearth package could not be installed, just install the libs manually. If
all needed libs are installled, the package will automatically finish its
installation.

Good luck!

Libreoffice4 in wheezy? Several questions

2013-05-19 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hello all,

I wanted to install LO4 in wheezy. I wondered, why it is in wheezy-backports
but not in testing. Maybe the packages in wheezy-backports are too young for
testing?

However, I managed it by using aptitude and made sure, all dependencies are
correct.

But I guess, there is an easier way, to update my ONLY my installed packages
out of wheezy. In the wiki I read, you can use apt-get -t wheezy-backports
install $package, which worked well.

And of course, i can edit the apt pinning system to give wheezy-backports a
higher ranking. But wouldn't this affect other packages, too?

I suppose, there might be a way just to update certain packages from wheezy-
backports using the pinning system, but I fear, I can use this only for meta-
packages or directly named packages. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

And last question: If Libreoffice4 will be put into testing repo, will those
packages then be newer than those in wheezy-backports or is this a matter of
chance?

Thanks for your answers! This will help me to help my friends.

Best regards

Hans

No, not quite. I imagined something like "apt-get -t update wheezy-backports"
and then "apt-get upgrade libreoffice-* | grep installed" or some similar
command. Just to make sure, to update ONLY the libreoffice-packages (and libs)
out of wheezy-backports. I suppose, you know, what I mean

Yes, this is , what I thought, too. But I learned, that this is not the case.
In testing the libreoffice version is 3.5.4, whilst in wheezy-backports already
is 4.0! IMO this is strange, as testing IMO should be higher and newer
versions than in stable. But in real, libreoffice4 is in unstable(!), and from
unstable ported to backports. I do not quite understand the policy in this
behaviour, sorry. :)

Hi Lisi,

I am using the ncurses-gui of aptitude. In this gui the packages appear.

With "manually", I meant, that I walked with the cursor to all the packages
and its libs by pressing "+" and "-" to mark them as install or remove. I
know, the dependencies should be fullfilled by aptitude automatically, but this
worked not well. I had to fine tune a little bit.

It should, but did not. I think, it is, because wheezy-backports got a lower
pinning ranking.

Yes, that is exactly what I tried to express earlier. It was clear to me, that

Ahem, no, I am not new to debian. But I am no coder (coding is something,

Yes, you are right. This thing I really misunderstood. I imagined, to add
backports to the sources.list would automatically replace packages from stable
with packages from backports (here clamav for example comes in my mind, where
every virus database update requires a new clamav binary).

I see, I was wrong.

wheeezy-backports - strange policy?

2013-05-23 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I made my minds about wheezy-backports now for a long time, and allow me, to
open this discussion.

Pleae correct me, if I am wrong: IMO wheezy-backports is the successor to
debian-volatile and is intended for use of debian/stable users (aka wheezy at
the moment). As far as I read, packages in wheezy-backports are put into, when
the environment of those is chenged and a higher (and newer version) is
needed. As an example I want to name here clamav (which needs a newer version,
when the virus-database is being updated, some chatprograms like yahoo, ehen a
new protocol must be used or new protocols have to be used, but package
versions in wheezy do not support them).

If I am correct, then I do not understand, why packages are available in
wheezy-backports, but not in debian/testing. According to debian behaviour (I
think the word policy is the wrong choice here), Packages from unstable will
be tested, then, if no big bugs appear, get into testing , and when it is
stable enough, are put into stable.

And if I am still correct, that ALL packages in wheezy-backports are aimed for
the use only in debian/stable, there will appear things, I do not understand.

1. So, how can it be, that i.e. libreoffice in wheezy-backports is version 4.0,
whilst in debian/testing it is still 3.5? And the backported version is from
unstable, it is 4.0!

2. How can it happen, that everyone is telling me, "Do NOT upgrade ALL
installed packages from wheezy-backports in debian/stable. It will crash your
system!" ?

I think, there is a problem with wheezy-backports policy. I like the idea very
much, and I think, it is good, but if I am correct in all my points, I think,
it is not easy for unexpierenced users, to use wheezy-backports at all.

Pleae apologize, if I am wrong and I am happy, when I will be enlightend. :)

Best regards

Hans

Hi Alan!

This will not work. The problem is missing libxvmc1:ii386, which got a

Solution: Just install the installer from Nvidia's site. Works like a charm!

Hi Andrei,

no this does not work with all apps. Testing with googleearth and some other
apps will fail. The problem seem to be missing libxvmc1:i386.

This bug is still not fixed. Building the packages from Nvidia installer
however is working fine.

So, whoever needs 32-bit apps running, he might be adviced to install Nvidia-
*.run - until the dependencies will be fixed.

Sorry for telling so.

java and other plugins in konqueror

2013-05-31 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hello all,

I got into a slight problem, which I meanwhile could solve. The problem was,
that konqueror didn't want to start the java-applet, when it was needed,
although
- java was existent
- icedetea-plugin was installed
- java path was correct
- update-alternative --config java was correctly set to openjdk-6

I found the solution, when I compared my system with another working system
(both running debian/testing). The cause of the problem where wrong plugin
paths set in konqueror. This could be fixed by editing them by hand.

The working system was a little bit newer and fresh installed squeeze system,
whilst the not working system was installed as sarge and then contiously
upgraded.

So, of course, the setting of paths for the plugins may changed during the
time.

I figured out, the entries are stored in ~./kde/share/config/kcmnspluginrc.

But, where can I find a file of it? I tried apt-file search kcmnspluginrc, but
got no result. So I guess, this file will be generated, either by installing
konq-plugins or at first start of kde.

Can someone tell me, how this file got be created or installed? Or what should
be the "default" content of it? I googled, but found no staisfactory
description.

Thanks for your help.

Have a nice weekend

Hans

Hi Alex,

try Trinux (google at it) or you can use tomsrtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/).

The second one helped a lot.

If you got a netbook and you can boot from an usb stick, you might want to use
"Trinity Recue Kit" or "Rescue is Possible" aka R.I.P..

Both are my favourite tools. To get both on an usb stick, use unetbootin
(available for linux and windows) for it.

Hope this helps

Good luck!

Remove user data of uninstalled packages

2013-06-09 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi there,

just a question. Is there any way to remove user configuration files of
uninstalled packages except to delete ~./whatever manually?

apt-get --purge ~c (and aptitude purge) does that for configuration files in
/etc, but do you know a similar way for files below /home ?

If this is not intended, just let me also know.

Thanks for your answers.

Best regards

Hi Brad,

yes, maybe, but after more than 10 years of using debian a lot of unnecessary
stuf is in my ~home directory. And as I am now using a SSD drive, space is
more important than before.

However, I will just decide manually and create a script, which I can run on
all my other computers. They all got the same packagelist
installed/uninstalled.

Thought I might missed an automatical way, but I learnt, there is none. It is
just not intended by design.

Best regards

Re: Root can startx, main user can't - new Wheezy install

2013-06-12 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich

> Thanks for your thoughts,
>

Hi Nick!
You might want to check the settings of .Xauthority in users ~/home.
I had the issue, that its rights were changed from user:user to root:root
after I started LXDE.

When changed back to KDE, it won't start again. I manually deleted the file and
let it create new by KDE.

Another reason might be, if you are using nvidia-drivers. Make sure, your
users are in group "nvidia" (should be automatically set by the package
installer). Check the same, if you use fglrx driver.

You can start startx by the console, so you can see, what errors are given.
Try also other settings in xorg.conf (in case, you are using one), especially
for graphic drivers. Try entries like "nv" or "vesa" or "ati" , depending on
your hardware.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Good luck!

Hi Ralf,

I disagree with you. IMO putting /home on a seperate partition has a lot of
advantages.

First, when your system is so bad damaged, that you need to reinstall the
complete OS, all the setting of the can stay untouchable. These are passwords,
desktop settings, addressbooks and whatever.

Second, when space is getting low on /home, it is easy to add a new device and
put users data onto it on the new device. This can be also done while the
system is running (special hardware needed). This might be more important on
servers, but may also become important on desktp systems or notebooks with 2
harddrives built in.

Third, security. You can just encrypt the /home partition, whilst the rest of
the system can be left in unencrypted state (especially better for
troubleshooting purposes)

Fourth, if you are using /home on an own device, you can carry it around,
while got every personal setting with you.

There might be a lot more advantages, but these are IMO the most obvious.

Happy hacking

Yes, but iMO the problem is not the data, mor the mass of settings, people
store in their /home. I have, for example a lot of different passwords on lots

This is all right, if you do not need a lots of data. Sometiomes a floppy disk
will even be enough. However, I might imagine people, who might want to carry
theire data and theire settings around

Oh, and please do not misunderstand. Of course, I know, that an extra
partition is not really needed for /home. It is just a nice-to-have. I just
wanted to point on things, which might be an advantage for one or another
users needs or wishes.

It is linux, free software, really free, and each should use it, in any way he
wants to use it. And THIS is the greatest advantage!

Yeah, that is really an important point. FHS might really a problem in the
future, if major changes will appear.

I do not know, if this is correct, but somebody told me this: On servers In
the early days there were 16 root-directories, which were mounterd each on a
seperate device. 16, because a SCSI-bus can handle 16 SCSI-drives. And each
drive can handle 16 logical partitions, so there were max 16 Subdirectories,
in sum 255 filedirectories. This is not really related to our little
discussion, but I just wanted to mention it. And I repeart, I do not know, if
it is true. Google got me no clear answer. However, I found out, there were
originally 13 root-directories, and 3, which must not have been necessary
below /. I forgot all, but /opt for example was one of them.
However, I like the idea, 16 drives and each partition got its own directory.
I suppose to minimize fragmentzation and increase stabilty.

Hmm, I guess, that would not much be the problem, as you mostly need
directories and it is unimportand, which device it is mounted to - as long, as
it is a memory device (of course) and there is enough space available.
Mounting keyboards is not a good idea.

Hi John,

as far as I know, the partitions will be correct created by debian. Trimmings
is not a problem of the filesystem, but of partitioning. So, you can either
partitition with debian (whhezy or higher), or you can also use a live-file cd
like "gparted-live". It is the kernel, who is responsible for that. 3.2 and
higher will always work.

Have fun!

I just want to avoid, doing an aptitude full-upgrade and mix system files!

Don't know, if these are already mentionened. There are Datadisks called
"worms" (this is what they are called here in Germany). They need a special
drive. The advantage is, that those worms are guaranteed by the manufacturer

Worms look like DVD's, its capacity is about 10GB. Those are used by some

Re: *Another* Backup software question...

2013-07-13 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich

> This seems not to be a solution for most of us.
>
> Regards,
> Ralf

Yeah, it was just an idea. :) However, for backup purposes, my solutions are
the following:

Solution 1:
If you have another server available, use rsync and make two copies. First
one, just copy all files to a folder on the second server. If your system
crashes, you can quick install a new system and rsync back (i.e. via crossover
cable).
You can add a cron job, to do this thing hourly, daily and weekly. Works fine,
tested at work on my servers.

The second copy I suggest, use clonezilla (or partimage) to make a file of your
complete partition(s) or better harddrives. In case of a hardware crash, you
can just buy a new one, and can restore back (including all partitions!) in
one step.

Solution 2:
If you have NO second server, I suggest again two ways. Fgirst one is, to
store the things above on an USB drive. Harddrives are cheap now, but as Ralf
already mentioned, if they fall down, you get a brick.

So maybe solution 2 comes in handy. Install an old PC (some Pentium 1 will do
it) , and mak a fileserver. You do not need much, just base debian system and
rsync. However, maybe, you want it improve? Just add DRBL to it, so you can
save harddrive images there and can boot from it. Hey, take a look at
clonezilla website!

Solution 3:
Using colonezilla-livefile make images of your harddrive. You can split it in
4,5GB chunks and copy them to DVD. But remember: DVD and CD will not be ok
forever, but if you make 3 or 4 sets of it, it is relatively unlikely, that
the same part will be defective on all DVD's. Be careful., when creating them,
MD5sum will help to check.

Solution 4: You can also use the cloud. IMO this is the worst solution, as I
want always have complete control of all my data. However, you benefit of small
costs and that the provider takes care that data will not be sofisticated and
will be secured. If you decide for this, you should in any case encrypt all
date very hard. And encrypt it offline, best somewhere else and then upload it
-
of course with a protocol that is highly encrypted as well (like ssh).

Solution 5: Another bad solution. You can use tape drives. Tapes are cheap,
but their disadvantage is, they are slow and you need a tape drive. However,
tapes are rather good for long time saves. Of course, they also will not live
forever. But data recovering shall work fine, even at errors on the tape. I
never checked this, but at the governmentm where I worked in a data
processing center, I heard much good of tapes. Ok, they are obsolete. :)

Maybe, if I think more, there might be some more solutions, but maybe this
gives you some more ideas.

Have fun and happy hacking!

I am looking for a solution of a little problem.

My Acer 7520G has got a volume knob aside, and when I turn it, volume is

But in my syslog I find thus messages:

Aug 3 08:58:38 localhost logger: acpid: action VOLUP is not defined
Aug 3 08:58:38 localhost logger: acpid: action VOLUP is not defined
Aug 3 08:58:40 localhost logger: acpid: action VOLDN is not defined
Aug 3 08:58:40 localhost logger: acpid: action VOLDN is not defined

How can I avoid this messages? I suppose, it is a misconfiguration of acpi.
Must I find out, which keycode this wheel does and then define it in some
config?

I did this before with setkeycode (when I remember correctly), but it was
years ago. I hope, this problem can be solved.

Best regards

Hi Stan!

Yeah, that's what I was looking for. Great! It will help me a lot.

I think, I will now be able to get this thing to work myself. Thanks for this
information. If I will stuck again, I will write again - but I think, I would
not need to.

Best regards

Hans

32-bit problems with nvidia packages

2013-08-13 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hello list,

I need to use some 32-bit applications on my amd64 system. These are 3d-
accelerated.

But it looks lioke there is a bug in the packages. When I for example start
googleearth, it starts, but I cannot see the planet.

This problem exists since the change to multiarch.

However, when I install the installer from Nvidia site (NVidia-bla*.run), and
say, to install the 32-bit libs, too, during that install process, verything
is working fine.

I could do so and do not use the debian packages, but I think, you might want
to get this fixed. Sadly the latest Nvidia modules cannnot be build with kernel
3.10 (I mean now those from the NVidia-bla*.run installer).

The debian nvidia-kernel module of course can be build (using dkms).

I think, I did not miss some libs, these are installed:

dpkg --get-selections | grep nvidia
glx-alternative-nvidia install
libgl1-nvidia-glx:amd64 install
libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 install
libxvmcnvidia1:amd64install
nvidia-alternative install
nvidia-driver install
nvidia-glx install
nvidia-installer-cleanupinstall
nvidia-kernel-commoninstall
nvidia-kernel-dkms install
nvidia-support install
nvidia-vdpau-driver:amd64 install
xserver-xorg-video-nvidia install

And of course my system is multiarch. Jus got problems with the nvidia-
packages.

There is already a bugreport relatd to this, but can't remember the number,
sorry.

Can someone else either report, if he is managed to run it on a 64-bit system
and how he did? Or confirm my problem somehow? Would be nice, so I can look,
what the reason for this behavior is.

Thanks and best regards

Hans

Hi Brad!

No, I don't think so. The problem appeared first at multiarch. It was when I
removed ia32-libs* out of the way. Since that day, the problem appeared. It is
not only googleearth, which face this, it is also other 32-bit apps, that make
problems.

With googleearth the problem is good to see: When everything is running fine,
the earth appears, if not, you get a gray background.

My 32-bit flight simulator (X-Plane) for example, does not start, too. And
notice: The problem does NOT appear, when I install using NVidia's installer!
So the problem MUST be in the 32-bit part of debian packages.

As I said, there WAS a bugreport related to this, but maybe it is closed
meanwhile. If not, hope some developer might be reminded at this.

Best

Hans

I often used a tool called "getdataback_for_fat" , and "getdataback_for_ntfs".
There is a demo version available.

If this does not work, you can try dd the drive to a file, and then extract
your data from this file.

For this part I am using "deft-7.2", which is a forensic livesystem. Version
7.2 is the last, with "hb4most" on it, a nice GUI for the famous tools
"foremost" and/or "scalpel".

DEFT got also other tools on it. And it is linux! Debian based, as far as I
know.

It also has other tools on it. For Windows thereis DARTS2 on the CD, which is
also very mighty.

Hope this helps

Good luck!

question to live-build

2013-08-23 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi folks,

I hope, someone is more experienced with live-build than me.

The problem:
I have set up a live-build for kali-linux, which I want often build for new
updates. But I do not want to download the whole stuff every time, so I am
using apt-cacher-ng, which is working perfectly

I also want to avoid the installing and unpacking of the whole stuff at every
run, if this is possible. And I want just to download newer or additionally
stuff, of course.

Now my question:
What is the best command before any build?
lb clean? lb clean --binary? lb clean --cache? lb clean --chroot?

At the moment I am just using lb clean, and it works well, except it unpackes
all packages every time.

I creates a little script for me, which I attached. Nothing special, jsut to
make things easier, You can use and change it in any way you want.

This script will be improved and released by me, as soon as I understand live-
build better.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards

Hans
