Maybe you could just run IE under wine. That depends on your definition of "wrong." Certainly, I'd say that MS has the legal right to set up their site anyway they like. But the question of what's right, in the sense of what's allowable, is different from the question of what's right, in the sense of either what's proper or what's wise. Just because someone CAN do something does not mean that they SHOULD.
KMail and PGP
I have PGP v 2.6.3 installed on my system (Debian unstable.) I've generated keys and can encrypt or sign a document from the command line without error. I'd like KMail to add a PGP sig to my posts. I have the option selected under "Composer" and have my PGP identity entered under "Identity." Under security, if I select either "PGP 2.x" or "Automatically detect", the selection will not stick. That is, if I close the dialog box, then reopen, the setting has reverted to "Don't use encryption" When I compose a message, the buttons for either encrypting or signing a message are greyed out and unusable. I've been through the KMail help file and can find nothing else I need to do to make this work. Any clues on what I'm missing? Thanks in advance, Dan

dual-homed ping

I have two interfaces: eth1 172.16.100.101 and eth2 172.16.200.101. Even with explicit routing rules in place to route 172.16.100.0 via eth2 src 172.16.200.101, the kernel seemingly will not ignore the fact that 172.16.100.101 is directly connected and send the ping out the designated interface. This is true, so far as I can tell, whether I'm routing using a single table or setting up multiple routing tables as the article indicates. If I'm missing something from the link you posted, please elaborate on the approach to take. For background info, I'm setting up a CCNP lab. The labs require that I have hosts connected to various points in the network, and that I configure the routers and switches so that the various hosts can ping one another. It seems a waste of resource and money to go buy four or so computers so I can set them up and do nothing but ping from them. I'm trying to accomplish the same thing with a single host and multiple interfaces. In order for this to work, I need to be able to ping one interface from another interface and have the packet traverse the network. If the network is broken, I need the ping to fail. Another option I've considered is to use Xen and set up virtual machines, each with their own interface and IP. (Each has to use a different physical interface, since the interfaces need to be connected to different switches in the network.) I'm not sure, however, how networking is handled within Xen. There's obviously a method to share the resources, since you can have multiple VMs using a single network interface. I'm not sure if the Xen network sharing code will recognize that I'm pinging from one VM to another, and "helpfully" route the packet internally rather than simply send it out the interface. Anyone know the answer to this before I go to the trouble of configuring and installing multiple VMs? Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Do a Google search of "compact database" and see how many hits you get. (I get about 28 million.) It's a perfectly common term. Follow a few of those links and read what you find. Marking records with a deleted tag and not actually deleting them until you compact the database is standard database behavior. It's been around for some twenty five years or so. The behavior you find so appalling is standard behavior among modern, database- type MUAs. Yes, Outlook does it. So does KMail. So does Evolution. They all have a "Trash" folder. When you delete an email, it gets moved into the "Trash" folder. They can all be configured to handle the trash in different ways. It can sit there until you manually deleted. It can sit until it's been there for a user specified length of time. Trash can be emptied upon exit, with or without a prompt. There are all sorts of options and they're all under your control. All you have to do is learn to use the program that you have on your computer. > I think I'll side with the people who think this obscure use of the word > "compact" is a bug in IceDove As I pointed out above, it's neither obscure nor a bug. Apache2 and PHP5
Running Debian unstable. I got up this morning any my server had crashed. Haven't figured out why yet but that's another issue. Upon rebooting, Apache2 failed to start with the following error: Syntax error on line 115 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load: API module structure `php5_module' in file /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so is garbled - perhaps this is not an Apache module DSO? I found a LOT of hits with a Google search. Evidently, the issue has to do with the version of Apache that PHP is compiled for. I found bug reports that have been filed and closed. I found arguments and recommendations on what args to use when compiling PHP5. I found all sorts of questions and lots of information but not a lot of hard answers other than "recompile for the correct version of PHP." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling PHP5, libapache2-mod-php5, etc. I've tried reinstalling Apache2. The only way I can get Apache to start is to take out the link to php5 in /mods-enabled. Doing that, of course, breaks any PHP scripts but at least the rest of my website loads. I installed Wordpress last week and had no issue restarting Apache, so it appears that the current issue has been (re?)introduced by a recent update. Is anyone else seeing this issue? Is there a known combination of Apache2 and PHP5 packages that work together? Is there a way to fix this without downloading the PHP5 source and mucking about with compiler options? Kernel panic with new kernel
My Etch server boots fine with the default 2.6.18 kernel. I downloaded the 2.6.25 kernel and did: make all make modules_install make install depmod 2.6.21.3 mkinitrd.yaird -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.25 2.6.25 Updated grub and rebooted. I'm getting a kernel panic: /usr/lib/yaird/exec/run_init: No such file or directory Attempted to kill init From what I can find, this is usually related to moving partitions around or otherwise confusing the system as to where the root system is located. I haven't changed anything as to partition layout. The system boots fine with the old kernel. The grub entries are identical except for the number associated with the kernel. Network FUBAR
I'm trying to move my server to another system without reinstalling. The old system is a cheap whitebox running generic components. The new system is an IBM eserver 325. I did a deep copy of the entire old system harddrive and put it in the new server, booted from a rescue CD, installed grub on the MBR, then rebooted the new system. Everything seems to be working fine except for networking, which is deeply and perplexingly hosed. The current symptoms are that I have no connectivity. I can bring up the interface and it shows connected. I can ping the IP assigned to the interface from the computer. The input and output counters increment when I show the interface. But I can't ping another computer on the same subnet plugged into the same switch. I get "destination host unreachable" back from the IP assigned to the interface. The relevant subnet is in the server's routing table, as is a default route. I've even tried adding static routers pointing directly to the IP of the other machines. The computer is plugged into a 16 port switch module installed in a Cisco router. Looking at the interface from the router, it shows connected and the counters on the interface increment as well. The IP address for the server appears in the router's ARP table with a hardware address of "incomplete" and blank under the associated interface. I have multiple devices plugged into the switch, and I've swapped the cables and the switchports around. The other devices have no connectivity issues, and this server has no connectivity, regardless of where it's connected. That seems to pretty much eliminate an external layer 1 issue or something silly like being in the wrong VLAN. (For thoroughness, let me add that there are no access lists or other configs on the router that could even conceivably interfere with the server's connectivity.) The server has two onboard Broadcom NetXtreme NICs, which both behave identically. They may very well share common hardware, so I installed a Netgear RTL81695 based NIC. Completely different hardware, using a completely different driver. It behaves identically to the onboard NICs. That seems to rule out a hardware issue, but I'm at a loss as to what software issue could cause these symptoms either. Anyone have any ideas before I wipe the hard drive and start from scratch? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Upgrade to Apache2
With the update to Apache2 in Testing, I got bit by a couple of things. The first issue is discussed in bug 392701. I have websvn installed and am getting an error on AuthUserFile. I have both authz_host.load and authz_user.load linked in my mods-enabled directory. What other modules do I need to support AuthUserFile? Second, my son runs his Football Fantasy League on my server. He creates his pages in MS Word (no comments please! I'm working on it! :-) , saves them as a word page and FTPs them to the site. Since the upgrade, lots of punctuation characters (tacs, apostrophes, etc.) are showing up as inverted question marks. These pages were fine before the update. Is Apache using a different codepage or something now? Can I switch back? Thanks in advance for any assistance. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? DNS Spoof query
I have a Debain email and web server which normally uses my ISPs DNS server. My ISP's DNS server was having some issues, so I switched the Debain server to use my internal DNS server on 192.168.2.10. This is a Windows DC. After doing that, my Snort report from my Debian server started showing the following: 62 192.168.2.10 209.170.146.89 DNS SPOOF query response with TTL of 1 min. and no authority I'm trying to figure out if this is a false positive, a misconfiguration on my DNS server, or a sign of possible compromise. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bash script - pass command line arg to embedded sed script with multiple args
What I'm trying to do is pretty simple. Getting it to work is turning out not to be. What I want to do is call a bash script with a couple of arguments, and, within the script, call sed to use those args to replace two placeholders in a file: bashscript SUB1 SUB2 This line inside bashscript doesn't work: sed -e 's/PLACEHOLDER1/$1/' -e 's/PLACEHOLDER2/$2/' < input > output It doesn't work because the command line args ($1, $2) are quoted and don't get replaced. However, because I'm using the -e argument to sed, I have to quote the argument or sed gets all huffy. I've tried all sorts of variations on the quoting and either bash or sed isn't happy no matter what I do. The only workaround I've found is to do the substitutions in two passes: sed s/SUB1/$1/ < input > temp sed s/SUB2/$2/ < temp > output Since I'm not using multiple argument to sed, I don't have to quote the arg. That's an ugly hack and really rubs me the wrong way, however, and it'll get really ugly if I end up having to do more than two substitutions, which I expect to do at a later date. I suppose I could pipe one sed command to another rather than using a temp file but that's not significantly more palatable. Any ideas on a cleaner approach on how to do this, either by getting this right or using an alternative method, are welcome. One thing to note is that this is a small part of a larger, more complex script, so the bash script can't (easily) go away. I don't have to use sed to do the replacement if there's another approach from within the bash script that would work. -- "Americans detest all lies except lies spoken in public or printed lies." - Edgar Watson Howe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Qmail and checkpassword
I've been running qmail on testing for some time now (several years altogether, right at a year on this box.) Recently, following a reboot, I stopped downloading mail to Kmail via pop3. (Kmail runs on my desktop machine, and qmail is running on my server.) Some troubleshooting revealed that checkpassword was complaining about errno. A bit of time on Google indicated that I should modify conf-cc to include the errno.h header and recompile checkpassword. I did and the errno error went away. I'm not sure what caused this to happen. This was a working system that failed following a reboot. I'm assuming that an apt-get update changed something, but I'm not sure what or when. After fixing the errno problem, I still can't get my mail. The following illustrates the problem: Luke:/# ps aux | grep checkpassword root 18699 0.0 0.012440 ?S07:24 0:00 /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -v -R -H -l 0 0 110 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup mail.riddlemaster.org /bin/checkpassword /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir root 18745 0.0 0.0 1944 624 pts/0R+ 07:27 0:00 grep checkpassword Luke:/# /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup mail.riddlemaster.org /bin/checkpassword /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir +OK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> user ddjones +OK pass mypass +OK quit +OK Luke:/# telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain. Escape character is '^]'. +OK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> user ddjones +OK pass mypass -ERR authorization failed Connection closed by foreign host. I changed nothing other than the password in the above capture. (And I'm absolutely certain that he password was correct.) I cut and pasted the command being passed to tcpserver directly from the ps output and I can successfully login running it from the command line. Telnetting to localhost, and I get an auth failure. This makes no sense to me, and I don't even know where to start looking for the problem. I realize it's generally rude to request direct responses, but at the moment I'm unable to download my mail. chmod
I've been using Linux for awhile but every thing I know is self taught. That means I know some things quite well and am abysmally ignorant in other areas. Hopefully, this question isn't too stupid. Or maybe it'll give you a good laugh and you'll take pity on me and answer anyway! I want to set specific permissions on a group of directories and all sub-directories. I can't figure out how to do this other than manually tracing through the directory tree. As near as I can tell, chmod has no option to select only directories. I figured I'd use ls to list the directories and pipe them to chmod, but ls doesn't seem to be able to do it either. Surely I'm missing something. ls _has_ to have the equivalent of the DOS command "dir /a:d". Doing "info ls", "Which files are listed" shows only -a, -A, -B, -d, -I, -L, -R, none of which seem to be able to suppress listings based upon permissions or types. The closest I could figure out was to do: ls | grep ^d However, trying to use that method to extract only the directory names and then pipe them to chmod would have gotten quite convoluted. So, the primary question is, is there an easy way to set the permission on directories, only directories, and all sub-directories? A related question is how to use ls to list only directories. And if anyone's in a 'splaining mood, here's another one: how do you set all files so that the group permissions match the user permissions? (If you have three files who's permissions are, for example, 700, 600, 500, and you want them to be 770, 660, 550 respectively.) The GIF extension doesn't show up (even grayed out) on the list of types to save as. Talking to friends who use Red Hat and Mandrake, both indicate that they were able to use Gimp for GIFs without any extra action on their part. XFree86 after crash
I had a brief power fluctuation the other day. Despite being plugged into a cheap UPS (which is going back to the store this weekend), my box reset itself. Boot-up file system check found no errors. However, when I logged in, X would not start. I got errors that sections of my XF86Config file were unrecognized. I installed a stable system and updated to testing. I'm pretty sure this upgraded my XF from 3.? to 4.1.0. startx, which had worked fine before the power dump, was evidently causing 3.? to try and start. Executiong XFree86 directly resulted in X starting (with no desktop, fo course.) A bit of poking about and I found out that /usr/bin/X11/X was not a link to a server. It was an actual executable. I renamed it and linked X directly to XFree86. I started XF as root but got an error as non-root. I had to suid root XFree86. I can now run XF as non-root, although I got an error concerning the sound system that /tmp/something did not belong to user. (I don't even have speakers hooked to this system, so I'm not overly concerned with it now.) Did the power dump cause this problem or did it just bring it to light (perhaps an update or install of something inserted the problem but I hadn't rebooted or exited X since then)? Is X normally an executable vice a link under debian testing? Was linking X directly to XFree86 the correct way to fix this? Should XFree86 normally be suid root? I'm running Evolution under KDE 2 on a debian testing system, kernel 2.4.18. I have gnome-spell, ispell and aspell all installed. (Not sure how I ended up with both ispell and aspell installed but I just checked and they're both there.) When I write an email, there's a menu item under "Edit" to "Spell Check Document." Selecting it results in a pop-up window that says "No misspelled words found." This immediately pops up, regardless of what the message contains. I can type pure gibberish and it happily tells me that there are no misspelled words. I can't find any configuration options which seem like they might affect spell checking. Any clue as to how I can get it working? Once I DO get it working, is there any way to have Evolution automatically run spell-check before sending an email? I can't find any options for this either. Thanks in advance for any assistance. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Evolution has no help or email properties
Running Evolution 1.0.3 on Debian testing. Whenever I click on any of the "Help" topics, nothing is happens. I can go to /usr/share/gnome/help/evolution/C/index.html and the file is present. I can double click it in a file manager or enter it manually in the browser's path and it opens fine. But selecting any "Help" menu item does nothing. The same thing (which is absolutely nothing) happens if I open an email and select the "Properties" item under the "Edit" menu. I'm not sure if these problems are related or not. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

After a bit of mucking about, I now have Help limping along. It opens in Nautalis, which displays the HTML as text, but offers an option to open in Mozilla. Evolution calendar crashes
I have Evolution installed on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8100) under Debian testing. Evolution starts fine and the email client works fine, but as soon as I try to access calendar, I get an error that says that the component which runs the calendar has crashed and I'll need to restart Evolution to regain the functionality. Quitting and restarting results in the same thing. I'm currently running 1.0.3, which is the default with Debian testing. I've removed Evolution, downloaded 1.0.5 and installed that, then removed that and reinstalled the default 1.0.3. I've completely deleted the Evolution subdirectory in my home folder in between removal and reinstallation. I still get the same thing. Calendar crashes whether I'm logged in as a normal user or as root. Any ideas or suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ipmasqerade
I'm setting up a machine to work as NAT/gateway/proxy server for my home lan. I compiled the kernel and included NAT and the various network components as part of the kernel rather than as modules. I then installed ipmasq. NAT certainly seems to be working. Machines with a 192.168.1.? IP are able to surf the net. I'd now like to set up some IPMASQ rules to control what certain computers are able to access (that is, limit what my son's computer can access.) In order to see what's going on, I run netstat -anM I get the error message "no support for ip_masquerade on this system" Is this because I have the networking components compiled in rather than implemented as modules, because I'm using ipmasq rather than straight iptables, or something else? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Fonts and XFree86
Can someone give me a hint or a pointer to info on troubleshooting fonts under xf86? Running xf 4.1.0.1 under testing. I have only a few fonts available: Bitstream Charter, Courier, Courier 10 pitch, three varieties of Lucidux and Utopia. There are 1879 files located in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi. I have 167 ttf fonts in /usr/share/fonts/truetype. I have xfs-ttf installed and running. ps aux verifies it's there and running on port 7110. I have unix/:7110 in my XF86Config-4 file, as well as the direct font paths. xf's log file verifies that the font path is being set - none of them are being dropped. freetype, type1, speedo, etc modules are specified in XF86Config-4 and are shown as being loaded in xf's log. I've also installed xfstt, running on port 7101. Verified it's loading and in the font path, etc. I've apt-get installed msttcorefonts, and followed the procedures at http://www.paulandlesley.org/linux/xfree4_tt.html for the non-packaged fonts. No matter what I do, I get the same seven fonts available. Help? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've verified that the correct path is in XF86Config-4, checked /var/log/XFree86.0.log to ensure that the path is not being barfed out and that the freetype module is being loaded, verified the presence of fonts.dir and fonts.scale. Anything's worth a shot at this point. Unfortunately, changing the order had no effect. But I've now discovered that something funky is going on. Under Openoffice, the truetype fonts are available. They aren't available anywhere else I've found. I'm running KDE 2. The fonts aren't available under the ControlCenter. They don't show up in kword, konsole, or any other place I've checked. I created a document in Openoffice using various fonts and they display and print just fine. Saving the document and reopening it in kword, the fonts all show up as Utopian. While I can see both sides of this argument, it seems to me that anyone who is knowledgeable enough to understand and accept the dangers of allowing root to ssh is knowledgeable enough to change the default. However, a great many people don't know enough to understand the dangers and probably wouldn't know how to go about changing the default if they don't need that capability. Safe, secure mail relay
I'm running qmail as my mail server, running POP3 and SMTP. Because I occasionally travel on business, I have an address specifically for remote access. When I leave, I set up my normal accounts to copy to my "travel account." I access the account from my laptop. The laptop is sometimes plugged into a network and sometimes connected via a dial-up connection. IP is, of course, variable and unpredictable. I can receive mail just fine but, since I certainly don't want to host an open relay, I can't send mail from my laptop. My current work-around is to ssh into my server and send email via mutt. I'd prefer, however, to be able to send email from my normal email client. Is there a ready solution to this? Perhaps a modified SMTP setup where access is controlled via a password? I know that this breaks compatibility with standard protocols, but I have no problem installing custom client and server software if necessary or whatever hacks are necessary to make this work. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Multiple files
How does one handle multiple files via most command line utilities? For example, suppose you have a handful of perl scripts (*.pl) and you want to save them in the same directory with a different extension. The command cp *.pl *.bak complains that you're copying multiple files but the last command isn't a directory. Or suppose you have a series of perl scripts which are saved in DOS line-end format. The extra ^M on the bang line causes bash not to recognize the path to perl, and the script to fail. Sounds like a job for sed. sed s/^M// *.pl > *.unix Again, the file naming criteria doesn't work. I could write a script which essentially generates a new command for each file fitting the naming pattern, or perhaps use find -exec but there's got to be a straightforward way to do this on the command line. Doesn't there? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Serial comm program
s anyone aware of a decent comm program for Linux? Something along the lines of SecureCRT for Windows? (SecureCRT is a commercial program. There's supposed to be a Linux port in progress but I'd much prefer to use Open Source.) I can't seem to find anything but stuff that was written in the '90s like minicom or programs that have limited capabilities. For example, Komport (KDE's serial comm program) is limited to a 25 x 80 screen, despite the fact that it's a GUI program. I'm looking for a GUI program with a scrollback buffer, scripting, multi protocol support (ssh in all its various flavors, serial port, telnet, rlogin), session logging, etc. This is the kind of technical itch that I would think lots of programmers would scratch, but I haven't been able to find anything close.

I'm a Cisco tech for a very large organization. Half the time, I'm connected to a router console via a serial port. The other half, I'm connecting remotely. Our routers and switches only accept remote access via one specific server. I SSH into that server, then telnet into the device. When I'm working on a device, being able to scroll back to stuff that's scrolled off the screen is vital. We're required to log everything we do to the devices, so logging at all times is necessary. There are a number of actions that are highly repetitive. Scripting them makes it much easier and reduces the chances of error. I also need to paste in long configs. If the info is pasted in too fast, the router or switch will drop characters, so I need something with a configurable delay after pasting characters or lines from the clipboard. Most of the time, I upload new IOS files via TFTP. If a router crashes or the flash memory croaks or for whatever reason it will only come up to the rommon> prompt, it may require transfer via xmodem. etc, etc. Right now, I'm using SecureCRT on a company supplied Windows laptop. I'd prefer to use my own, Linux laptop. SecureCRT handles everything I've talked about easily. I was looking for something which could do the same thing in Linux. Evidently, it doesn't exist. Yes, it is certainly possible to accomplish everything I need via multiple programs. However, if I do go to multiple programs, it all has to work together. I have to be able to log the xmodem transfer, and I'd really like to be able to script the whole thing. I'm well aware of the value of small, sharp tools and the Unix way. But I'm also aware of the value of powerful programs that just work. I wasn't slamming minicom or any of the other programs, nor was I intending to "get uppity" about the decade it was written in. Minicom works great for lots of things and if it works for you, more power to you. But it doesn't have everything I need. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
