Specifically, although I have installed both the source and run several compiles, as well as the pre-compiled kernel-image version, I have yet to get a running and working 2.6.0. The precompiled package in testing doesn't work at all; after numerous error messages during the boot (which go by so fast I cannot see them all), followed by a bunch of failures trying to load lvm_mod (don't know why), the system panics after trying to kill the init process. Not impressive. My own compiled version gets farther, but after a mess of dma errors on /dev/hda6 (don't get that running 2.4.22), staring KDE fails and I am dumped back to a login prompt in the console. From what I can see, there are a lot of usb errors. Again, don't know why, becaue the keyboard doesn't work so I cannot log in and check dmesg. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten 2.6.0-test2 compiled and runnign at all and has any pointers? I've read what I can online, fixed the pitfalls noted (for instance, since CONFIG_VT, CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE, etc must be compiled in and not modules, you'd think the config scripts would tell you that) but not yet making progress. potato - unstable?
Hello! It's me again. For all of you, I apreciatte your concern and for having let me know what really "unstable" means. Maybe I was being too exciting about potato packages since I like a lot how my debian distro works and how it is made. Well, what I really want to say to those of you who have read me message is that what I mean is, as a user, potato has been as stable to me as slink would have been, since I havent had any problems with those unstable packages, I repeat, I am just a user, my computer does not do anything special, nor ir a server or anything productive. I update my linux system almost everyday. But I really know that for people that are not just simple users like me they can be taking a risk using some unstable packages. Again, I apreciatte your comments, and sorry If I have transmitted a wrong idea to some newbies. Regards to everyone Daniel

creating deb package of xfree86 4.3 from source?
Hello all, I am setting up sarge with video unsupported by xfree86 4.2. I know I can use the install script, but I wondered if I should turn the source into a deb file so I could remove and upgrade easily at a later date? (presuming it's not easily removed and not worrying about the time it takes as it's a newish P4 2.4) I added to my sources.list deb-src ftp://ftp.ens.utulsa.edu/pub/xfree86/4.3.0/source/ ./ and did apt-get update only to get .../Sources.gz: no such file or directory (there are multiple files there X430src-1.tgz to X430src-7.tgz) It seemed like a great idea but I'm floundering - can anyone give me a point in the right direction please? Is this a worthwhile exercise or should I use the script? (how do I uninstall it later?) Thanks very much, Daniel. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Installing Debian testing - hangs with "Running post-installation trigger libc-bin" at 12%
Debian testing stalls when installing in a vbox virtual machine. I selected LXDE as the alternative desktop and started the regular (not GUI) installer. Partitioned the drive with: [1GB /boot, 1GB swap, ~80GB at /] I have repeated this with mirrors: mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/debian http.debian.org (from the available options) The installer stops at 12% with "Running post-installation trigger libc-bin" and just stays there not doing anything. Delivery to accounts of the same domain on two different servers
Hi all! I am gradually migrating the accounts of a server (let's say mail1.domain.com) to another server (let's say mail2.domain.com). In mail2.domain.com I'm using something like this: virtual_alias_domains = domain.com virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual Where /etc/postfix/virtual has something like this: j...@domain.com john John is a SASL user. Delivery on this way is working. The current MX is mail1.domain.com and mail2.domain.com is receiving emails via fetchmail. The issue arises when a mailbox migrated to be used from mail2.domain.com wants to send an email to a non-migrated mailbox. I get something like this: An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.1.1 : Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table. Please check the message recipient "nat...@domain.com" and try again. Is there a way to get Postfix at mail2.domain.com knows that the mailboxes of domain.com for non-migrated accounts are at mail1.domain.com? Maybe using a transport table? Thanks in advance for your time. Kind regards, Daniel signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

problem with version numbering in packages openssl and libssl1.0.0?
Is there a problem with the version numbering for the packages "openssl" and "libssl1.0.0"? It seems I get the version from jessie/main and that the version from jessie/updates/main is ignored because of the extra letter in the version number. Isn't 1.0.1k-3+deb8u5 the prefered version here? If so, then I suspect lots of Debian stable users are stuck on a version without the latest security patches, which I would consider very bad. Radeon dpm power management issue
Hi all Since the new release (jessie) i have problems with the power management when i choose dpm method. Normally, but not always, i suffer some freezes, often leaving a irecoverable system. Some times with luck, solves with a KDE desktop restart. Once, i had a message with a kernel panic that involves dpm kms helper package. I would like to know how can i get more information to that issue. I have been searching in system los but i cant find nothing. I have solved for now, using the profile option instead dpm op, but i want to know whether that has a solution. If that is not possible, how can i make the profile option persistent at boot time? Maybe with udev or using a script (systemd or KDE initscript or so) ? Thanks in avance. Greetings.

ssh regenerated moduli file much smaller than the one provided by Debian
I have followed the instructions under "MODULI GENERATION" in the "ssh-keygen" man page. The resulting "moduli-2048" file is considerably smaller than the one provided with the "openssh-client" package. I have a few questions around this: 1) Why is the resulting "moduli-2048" file so much smaller? 2) How is the original "moduli" generated in Debian 8? 3) Why is the "moduli" file provided by the openssh _client_ package ("openssh-client")? I would have thought that this file is important when generating the server keys as well? Thanks for your time - Daniel

network-manager-gnome - Ethernet - Security - 802.1x - Password can't be changed
Hello, I'm using debian 9 up to date. Desktop Environment: Gnome Scenario: Where I work we connect to the network with Ethernet and 802.1x peap authentication. Each X days passwords expire and we need to change it. Problem: When I try to change the password to the new one and I apply changes everything seems fine (I apply and get no errors), but when I open the same settings back again the old password still remains, so the password is not really changed no matter how many times I try. Workaround so far: The only way I found so far to effectively set the password is to disable security completely and enable it back again to define all values from scratch. Additional info: Passwords are 32 characters long include uppercase, lowercase, digits, minus, underline and special characters such as !, $, %, &, etc. Package list and debian package version: network-manager 1.6.2-3 network-manager-gnome 1.4.4-1 network-manager-vpnc 1.2.4-4 network-manager-vpnc-gnome 1.2.4-4 Find attached a screenshot which shows the window where I set the password. But you are absolutely correct that many assumptions about displayed font sizes are wrong. > ... It also means that > changing the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 changes the *physical* > screen size, Do you mean the screen size of a font (the size of a font on the screen), or the screen size (the size of the screen)? > making all the fonts and everything else change size when > they should be constant. Which sizes do you think should be constant? If I increase my screen resolution (number of pixels), it's usually because I want more information on my screen, so (usually) everything should stay the same size in pixels but shrink in physical size on the screen. (Of course, there are other cases too. One might increase screen resolution to display something more smoothly but still want physical sizes of everything to stay the same.) I think the problem is that we don't distinguish between the specified printing size of text and the currently displayed size of text. (Actually, that second part is "the size on the display of the screen font currently used to display text with the specified printing size.") To me, a "10-point font" is one that prints on paper with a size of 10 points (if no further scaling is done when printing). Obviously, text set to print at 10 points can appear at any size on the screen. It makes sense to talk about a "10-point screen font" only when it's calibrated for the screen resolution in pixels and for the physical screen size. Regarding assumptions' being wrong, one major peeve is MS Outlook and its users. When the default "12-point" font size looks too big on their screens, they think that it's appropriate to set the font size to "10 points." That causes Outlook to send HTML mail with an HTML font size of 2. My browser/mailer is adjusted to display normal-sized text (size=3) at a comfortable screen size. Of course, when I get the Outlook- originated mail with a reduced HTML font size, it displays uncomfortably small on my screen. ...all because Bill Gates and company don't provide a way to display message text in a smaller screen font on the local machine without screwing with the HTML font size. getting gnome-session to use /etc/gnome/default.wm
Does anyone know what it takes to get /etc/gnome/default.wm to take effect? When GNOME creates my ~/.gnome* directories, it always creates ~/.gnome/default.wm, with WM=sawfish regardless of what I put in /etc/gnome/default.wm. In the Debian-default /etc/gnome/default.session, is the line: 2,RestartCommand=gnome-wm --default-wm sawfish --sm-client-id default2 supposed to override /etc/gnome/default.wm for purposes of creating ~/.gnome/default.wm. (In case it makes a difference: I start gnome-session by having "exec x-session-manager" at the end of my .xsession file.) More generally, is there any good explanation of how GNOME setup works? (I've found GNOME user documentation, but nothing about installing it or setting it up. I've been using just FVWM, and want to convert somewhat incrementally to GNOME with FVWM, so I don't want to jump directly to the Debian-default GDM/GNOME/Sawfish setup.) Beginner help
Help!Feeling a little out of my depth here!I have downloaded Debian and want to set up an old PC as a server which willinitially serve a PC and an X-box.To connect to the internet I'll be using an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem. My question is this, how do I set up Debian?!?OK, that's a big question. To start with, do I choose a normal install or a2.4 kernel install (thinking of the USB modem, I downloaded a Linux driverfor it. TAR file?). Secondly, what system do I set it up as? I got this far(mail server, games, SQL server etc) but went down the wrong path, I choseDial-up system and got truly lost. I retried it with the 2.4 kernel and chose the S3 Virge display adapter (I have a S3 Trio 3D/2X), having settled for a desktop setup. When it rebooted the graphics were corrupted. Is there a paticular display driver to choose or am I best sticking with the VGA one? I'm going to leave the server on and permantly connected to the net.Anyone help? Thanks!Dan.

But what hardware starts to request an interrupt and then says never mind? If the interrupt wasn't there any more, doesn't that mean some hardware never got serviced? Might that not lead to data loss? Daniel -- Daniel Barclay [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, I don't think so. It's not displayed when the Lilo menu is displayed. It's displayed only after Lilo starts booting. On my home system, "vga = 10" gives me 60 lines of 132 characters, which is higher resolution than the default 24 x 80. > which usually has the logo. To get rid of the logo, you probably need to > recompile the kernel. That really sucks if true. Any idea why Debian would leave in (or patch in?) such a flashy-but- useless feature given how badly it breaks other things? (You can no longer use vga= in lilo.conf to use a high-resolution text mode to see kernel boot messages. If you run less on the console, the top lines of the file aren't visible, apparently because less thinks the screen is 24 lines high, but the first 4 lines don't work because of the boot logo.) That is very weird. I have the logo on my machine (I even installed the new booticons pacakge) and it disappears partway through the boot process. I do see something happening partway through the boot process: The colors change to really weird, unintentional colors. Something is changing the color map, as if that something is partially reinitializing the video mode. Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Andrés Roldán wrote: Just for the sake of being clear, LILO does not change anything in the kernel, it just passes parameters to the kernel and then, when the kernel has been completely loaded, LILO has nothing to do hereafter. Right, except that before booting the kernel, LILO can set the video mode (e.g., 60 x 132 characters instead of just 24 x 80) before booting the kernel. what exactly does "init_module: No such device" mean?
When trying to load a driver reports "init_module: No such device", what exactly does that mean? Does it mean that the module couldn't find any instances of the type of hardware device that the module handles, using whatever degree of scanning or probing that that particular module performs? (Does "device" means devices at the hardware level with PCI bus locations and Vendor and Device IDS, or does it means devices at the level of ide0, lo0, etc., listed /proc/devices?) If a driver reports "init_module: No such device", does that necessarily mean that the driver doesn't recognize your hardware, or do you sometimes have to tell the driver an I/O address or IRQ number so it can find your hardware? Does using debconf with X server preclude swapping Control/Caps Lock?
On Woody (3.0r1), when installing xserver-xfree8, does using debconf to configure the server preclude using the standard XFree86 keyboard options to swap the Control and Caps Lock keys? Debconf encloses the entire XF86Config-4 file inside its: ### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION and ### END DEBCONF SECTION lines. Does that mean that one can't set keyboard options without risking having debconf delete one's customizations? Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". When you're looking at a directory using a graphical interface, a lot: - You have to open or at least switch to a different window. - You have to type or copy and paste the directory name. - You won't get the same data displayed by the graphical interface (which you'd expected it to print if it supported printing). If or when one wants to use a command line, that's fine, but when one it using a graphic interface, it should still support printing directory listings.
