DHCP & VPN
Hello! My client system is Debian Sarge, with eth0. It should to get IP address from DHCP server of my ISP. Up to now I use the static method to assign to eth0 the IP, but from 23. may will be the dhcp method in use. So I must to configure the system for that. I try to configure my system to use the dhcp method: - install the dhcp-client - edit the /etc/network/interfaces: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp auto tunnel iface tunnel inet ppp provider tunnel - edit the /etc/dhclient.conf: supersede router-discovery 0 /etc/init.d/networking restart route: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface aaa.bbb.ccc.d * 255.255.255.255 UH0 00 ppp1 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.128.0 U 0 00 eth0 default eee.fff.gg.h0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 The default gw should to be the: default aaa.bbb.ccc.d 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 ppp1 and not the abowe. Then I can use the tunnel for access the Internet. In the /etc/ppp/options file I have the: defaultroute usepeerdns options among others. How can I configure the dhclient, eth0, ppp and pptp to use the DHCP and VPN service of my ISP? After upgraded to Buster the Energy Settings is problematic: get blank scree on laptop and the power off is only applicable
Hello, I just upgraded to Debian Buster from Stretch. I am running it on an Acer Aspire V3-571 laptop. I am using XFCE Desktop Environment ( in Stretch I used it also ). In the Energy ... Settings I did set up in Stretch that that after 3 minutes of inactivity the screen comes blank and it works. But, from there I can't wake up the laptop, whatever I am doing: moving or clicking with the mice, hit Shift, Esc, Enter, Cursor Down or Up, these does not help to get back to my Desktop. The only way to get it back is to hold down the Power button until it is shut down, then hit again Power button to start the laptop. I purge the apmd package, but that does not helped me out. How can I solve this problem? Meanwhile I switch off in the Energy ... Settings that that the Screen come blank after some inactivity. -- Best, Pali

How can I solve this problem? I had a similar problem on a different distro and I fixed it by just upping the brightness when it was asleep. Fn f6 on a Thinkpad to increase brightness. Instead of sleeping or hibernating sometimes the machine was just turning the screen brightness down... I tried the Fn F6 too, but on my Debian Buster system this key combination is for show and switch between monitors. Here the Fn Left decrease, Fn Right increase the screen brightness but that does not work either, probably because my external monitor - which is LG Flatron W2252TQ does not have such capability. So, when my screen goes blank, I can't use Fn plus some keys to get my Desktop back. But I just found the way: Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to the Virtual Terminal, and from there Alt+F7 get me back to my Desktop. But, is this the solution? Before, on Stretch I just hit a Shift key and get back my Desktop out there. But here, on Buster, this does not work. Why? Moreover, I just purge the sleepd package, but install again all acpi packages. So I use Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Alt F7 to get back my Desktop. Is there a better way to do it? -- Best, Pali

1 GB memory for Intel 845G Motherboard
Hello! Debian GNU/Linux Sarge, kernel 2.6.8, apache2, Moodle, sTeam, etc. This machine will be some day a server, but now I use it for Desktop too. :-) In the machine is Intel 845G motherboard and I will to buy 2 x 1 GB RAM for it. I browsed price lists & find just new memories. If I know which would be right to my motherboard because it isn't a new piece: I bought them in the year 2002. In the manual of motherboard I red the following about memories & the processor: Processor * 400 MHz system data bus System Memory * Two 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMM sockets * 2.5V unbuffered PC 1600 (DRR 200) / PC 2100 (DDR 266) DDR SDRAM DIMM * Supports maximum of 2 GB system memory using 64Mbit, 128Mbit, 256Mbit or 512Mbit technology - Double-sided x16 DDR SDRAM DIMM is not supported There is a table for memory, whereby I cite just this, about 1GB RAM: Density | 512 Mbit Density Width | X8 Single/Double | SS/DS 184-pin DDR | 512/1024MB Now then, in the price lists there isn't memories like this. I find the follows in the nearby places: * 1GB DDR RAM 400 MHz * 1GB DDR RAM 400 MHz Kingston * 1GB DDR RAM 400 MHz Kingmax * CORSAIR VALUE SELECT MEMÓRIA 1024 MB 400 MHz CL3 * DDR 1024 MB 400 MHz Kingston * 1 GB PC2-4200 DDR II PQI Which one of them is the right for my motherboard? Re: system-dependent variables
> Where to find these system-dependent variables on my Debian Sarge system? > > Which command does call forth these variables? > > With which command can these variables to change? I installed on Sarge a new version of wmaker with ./configure && make && make install commands. Then, after a while I uninstall the newer wmaker but only manually: I remove every file of the newer wmaker. After that, I install the older version of wmaker (that come with Sarge), but WPrefs can't find icons. So, I think this is because, when use the ./configure command, then configure just checks the system and assigns values for system-dependent variables. So I think that these variables have been changed somehow and this unmake the proper installation of the older version of wmaker, isnt true? -- Regards, Paul Csányi http://csanyipal.info/moodle <<<--- Moodle - Course Management System http://csanyipal.info:81 <<<--- sTeam - Cooperative Learning -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Can't do security updates in aptitude for 3 packages
Hi, my system is Debian GNU/Linux Lenny with linux-image 2.6.26-2-486. When I run: $ sudo aptitude and did update I get that there is three packages for sevurity updates available. When I hit 'g' to did security updates I get message: --\ Packages being automatically held in their current state (3) i A libopenexr6 1.6.1-31.6.1-3+le i A linux-image-2.6.26-2-4862.6.26-17 2.6.26-17l i A linux-libc-dev 2.6.26-172.6.26-17l These packages could be upgraded, but they have been kept in their current state to avoid breaking dependencies. This group contains 3 packages. If you select a package, an explanation of its current state will appear in this space. libopenexr6 will not be upgraded to version 1.6.1-3+lenny3, to avoid breaking the following dependencies: but here isn't list any dependencies! That is the case in other two packages too. What does it mean? I can't anymore update these packages from this time? How to make from source debian package?
Hi, the gnustep packages are very old when installed from the official repositories so I wish to make debian packages from sources: tarballs, or SVN to make the fresh gnustep debian packages for the Lenny. By the way I wish to translate it to Hungarian too. When I get sources with 'apt-get source gnustep-packages' then I have the debian/ directories, but don't have these when I download tarballs or checkout SVN. I had a problem to upgrade on an old Pentium with K6 uProcessor from Etch to Lenny. When I edited the sources.list so that I can to update aptitude from a Debian Lenny mirror then I get error message: Illegal instruction and can't to use aptitude anymore. I have tried too to install Lenny from a netinstall or from the first Lenny's installation CD but at the point of setting up mirror for further installation, when I'm running aptitude update I get the abowe mentioned error message. But when I remove the mirror lines in sources.list, and do aptitude update, then the aptitude works again. So, I can't to use the Debian mirror with Lenny, but with Etch this works fine. After this happend to me I have installed on this PC box Debian GNU/Linux Etch again. The sources.list was: -> # Security deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main # Debian stable deb http://ftp.debian.org lenny main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.debian.org lenny main contrib non-free -> The aptitude on Etch run perfectly on this PC box with Pentium II class processor: model name: AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor, cpu MHz : 451.032, but like I say, on Lenny for some reason the aptitude don't works. I can on this PC box on Etch system to compile a kernel, I have verified the RAM with memtest86+ before I have installed on it the Debian Etch and find no errors. The Internet connection is through a cable modem and I must use cdc_ether module. I'm using this PC box for firewall/gateway. Any hints for a solution? Networking suddenly don't works (cdc_ether)
Hi, I have a laptop with installed Debian Lenny from the netinstall CD and from the internet. My internet connection is through a Cable Modem. I'm using an USB to Ethernet Adapter to connect the Laptop and Cable Modem. On the Laptop there is only one USB Port. I have successfully installed on this system the Debian Lenny from the Netinstall CD and have automatically setup the networking system. The networking works fine untill I put an USB Stick on this USB Port. After that the networking don't works any more with the USB to Ethernet Adapter. In the /etc/udev/rules.d/ I haven't the 70-persistent-net.rules file. I try to create this file by hand and edit it: # USB device 0x07b2:0x5101 (cdc_ether) SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", \ ATTR{address}=="00:14:04:31:19:9f", ATTR{type}=="1", \ KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0" then I restart the udev: /etc/init.d/udev restart and restart the networking: /etc/init.d/networking restart but can't get the interface eth0 and the networking don't works. I try to reinstall udev package too but that don't helps. I'm using the Urxvt terminal. aptitude show rxvt-unicode RXVT-like terminal emulator with Unicode support rxvt-unicode is a modern, Unicode-aware color xterm replacement that uses significantly less memory than a conventional xterm and many other Unicode supporting terminal emulators. It supports using multiple fonts at the same time, including Xft fonts, and client-server technology to reduce memory consumption when using multiple windows. This package contains the program version with most commonly-used features enabled, including transparency, (16-bit) Unicode and FreeType font support.
