Hi Marty,

Sorry. I'm not familiar with udev or lirc, nor how they interact in
deciding device names. It's surprising to me because I'm using the
upstream lirc, 0.8.2, and I get /dev/lirc0, as Debian's udev expects.

I'll try my mitigation strategy of removing the Hauppauge and
installing my Compro DVB card.

OK, I found out that Debian Etch uses a new input layer, and that the IR
inputs are in /dev/input/eventX where X corresponds the event number of
your input devices in 'cat /proc/bus/input/devices'

So my IR device is /dev/input/event1, instead of /dev/lirc or /dev/lirc0.

Wooties!

accessibility install question

2007-09-29 Thread Jude DaShiell
On debian when a system gets a text environment installed on it first then
gets gnome-orca installed on it, gnome and gnome-orca get installed but X
does not get installed. If X is required to run gnome; gtk, and kde and
isn't found already installed on a system when a gnome-orca install gets
done why aren't X and X associated packages also made dependencies and
installed? It can be more difficult for users with accessibility
requirements to install the g.u.i. part of debian correctly especially
without sighted assistance when trying the installation and then have the
G.U.I. environment come up accessibly when finished. I suppose one could
use gdm to start gnome and not use startx but you'd still have the issue
for setting the correct display and blind users tend to run debian without
monitors or mice connected unless they can get sighted assistance on a
maintenance issue.

Hi Jude,
if I recall correctly, there is no x windows dependency because of the
split between x server and x client. What this means is that you can use
an x client on your server with an x server on another machine, thus you
do not need an x server installed on your machine. Now the issue I guess
is to communicate this to blind users and where to document it. Maybe
this is for a debian accessiblity list or the debian-devel list?
hope this explains,
Kev

iceweasel "freezing X"

2007-09-29 Thread Attilio Cucchieri

Hi,

I have installed Debian etch, basically using the packages
from "Standard" and "Desktop", on two different computers.
In both cases, if one starts sevaral Iceweasel windows, the
X session gets frozen when the windows are closed (only when
they are closed!). The two PC's have

PIV 2.4, 512 KB cache, 512 MB memory

PIV 2.8, 2 MB cache, 512 MB memory

Note: it is only the X session that gets frozen. When this happens,
I can still connect to the machines from another PC and work
on it.

Any ideas of what's going on?
Best

Why do think it is called testing?
Why do you think it is not advertised as a Debian release.
Check the debian-release archives as to why the later version of GNOME
did not go into Etch, (it was not technical, but human reasons)

So why do garden-variety desktop users complain then?
If you want later versions of software why not download the source and
compile it yourself, running it from under /usr/local/bin if need be?

OK, I just wanted to make sure. As I said before, this version works
"out of the box" for me on my Sid/amd64 system. Unfortunately, this also
means that I don't know too much about the details of the
plugin-wrapping mechanism.

> Am I missing something in the installation chain that is causing this?

Maybe the viewer cannot be executed because you are missing some
component of X (or some other library) which is assumed to be present
and therefore not specified as an explicit dependency. Do you run an
unusually minimalistic Xorg install?

Looking at the post-installation script, it seems that things go wrong
at the very last step, which is:

nspluginwrapper -n -i /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

According to the manpage, this is meant to install the wrapper for
libflashplayer.so into the mozilla plugins directory. It also seems to
test if the viewer itself is executable and that is not the case on your
system.

I would first run these commands:

ldd /usr/bin/nspluginwrapper
ldd /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so
ldd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin

Maybe that will turn up a missing library.

Also, just to be sure, check if your running kernel supports 32-bit ELF
executables:

$ egrep 'ELF|IA32' /boot/config-$(uname -r)
CONFIG_ELF_CORE=y
CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF=y
CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION=y
CONFIG_IA32_AOUT=y

Finally, you could try to run

nspluginwrapper -v -n -i /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

and hope that the verbose mode provides additional clues.

Hi, and thanks for helping out. It's not working :(
I tried:
Package: *
Pin: origin ""
Pin-Priority: 1001

Also tried: Pin: origin

apt-cache policy xchat; prints a priority of 500 for both file and
http. I took a look at the apt-howto and then looked at the following
file:
/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_etch_main_binary-
i386_Packages

This file is supposed to contain:
 *Archive: stable
 Version: 2.2r3
 *Component: main
 *Origin: Debian
 *Label: Debian
 Architecture: i386

But the *'d info is missing.

I also took a look at this file:
/var/lib/apt/lists/_usr_share_debian_disc1_dists_etch_main_binary-
i386_Packages

It has only this info:

Package: adduser
Priority: important
Section: admin
Installed-Size: 900
Maintainer: Debian Adduser Developers
Architecture: all
Version: 3.102

Note that this meta-data lacks an information regarding origin (http/
file/ftp) is missing? Since, Pin: release/origin need to be fed
parameters (Label, Archive, Origin) to filter on, i guess that
is the reason why it doesn't work??

This didn't work either :(

darkstar> cat /etc/modprobe.d/blockedMods
install fan /bin/true
install thermal /bin/true
install processor /bin/true

Also, contents of: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

blacklist fan
blacklist thermal
blacklist processor

the problem is self-explanatory. The service failed to start which
propogated an error. You should investigate why it failed to

Yes, I have it installed using etch, and like it very much. Though it
was kind of hard to get going. You may have already set it up, but just
in case you have not, of in case somebody else is trying, I will briefly
mention what I found worked. It may help somebody out there.

Firstly, I never got the Debian version working at all. I am sure I
goofed it up, but I just couldn't find a way to make it start. The docs
didn't seem to offer anything useful at all either. In the end I used
the CVS version of stumpwm. It has a real README which actually has
decent instructions. By following them I had a working executable in
just a couple of minutes. However, sbcl from Debian also does not work
right, and under any kind of load the entire system becomes uselessly
unresponsive. I removed the SBCL installed via apt, and recompiled it
from source. Then I installed clx using asdf "(require 'asdf) (require
'asdf-install) (asdf-install:install 'clx)" and recompiled stump. This
worked fine, though the final product tends not to be very lightweight.

I was also able to get stump with clisp working, though in the end it
was less than reliable. The up-side though is that it is much, much
lighter than sbcl. Again, I could not get the clisp I installed via apt
to work, and had to compile from source. It failed again and again to
work with stump though, until I tried CVS on that too. I also had to
use new-clx instead of mit-clx. Unfortunately, even after getting it to
work it crashes X fairly regularly (anytime certain dialog boxes are
used, such as print or downloads) and so is rather less than useful.
Really too bad as I was much impressed with its generally faster,
lighter feel than stump with sbcl.

But, I did get sbcl going okay, and with it stump seems solid and
usable. It is fast overall, and certainly has the nice feel of
ratpoison, with the bonus of a mode-line. And even though it is not
terribly lightweight considering the sparsity of the thing I still think
it is an excellent choice for a tiling WM.

However, as much as I liked it, xmonad (http://xmonad.org/) was even
more pleasing than everything else. It also took a little work to get
going, though nothing like stump, but it was worth it in the end. It is
unbelievably light and fast and even seems smaller than ratpoison. And
dzen2, a separate app, as a status-bar is much more full-featured than
stump's, and seems about as good as what ion has. Additionally, it
handles transient windows much more realistically than does stump or
ratpoison. With it you can also grab the window and resize it making
that window a floating one rather than tiling, all without the hoops you
seemingly had to jump through with ion3 to do the same thing. Without a
doubt, xmonad with dzen has been the most satisfying and simple approach
I have yet tried in the window manager market.

I am not aware of a single package that will do all that you want, but a
combination of a few packages should get you there. I use syslog-ng for
aggregating logs from many servers, and I think it far surpasses the
standard udp syslog daemon for reliability. Running logcheck and/or
logtool on the syslog server to parse the raw logs will get you pattern
matching and various reporting possibilities.

No, Policy must directives are things package must comply
with, or they are thrown out of the release (unless release managers
 offer dispensation).

However, policy _changes_ tend to be conservative, and policy is
not where you do design and tinkering. So new stuff needs to be
tested, and deployed, and _then_ policy changes. Policy also does not
tend to change rapidly and make gazillions of packages instantly
 buggy.

Hmm. I wondered why kevin was saying this, since he is generally
clued in, and knows policy is to be followed. The distinction is that
Debian technical policy, the entity Chris is referring to (I presume),
does not govern people. It governs technical aspects of packaging
Debian software, so it has no jurisdiction in how reports are responded
 to.

Env var on the fly

2007-09-29 Thread Francesco Pietra
Having defined (in my .bashrc) the environmental variables for computing suites
X and Y (PATH to them) it happens - because of some bug in X - that on running
certain programs of Y, executables of X are called (and of course not found).

If I undefine the env var X, all programs of Y run perfectly.

Is any simple way to define the env var X on the fly, when X is needed, without
having to use X as another user? (which would overcomplicate the matter because
there is an scp link from the computing machine to and from a desktop, where I
am).

debian linux amd64 etch on the computing machine, where my .bashrc. deain linux
i386 etch on the desktop.

Thanks

Interesting distribution, but neither the soekris net5501 nor any of
the vpn cards are mentioned there.

Also the task of this distribution isn't in any way related to what
I'd like to build. I'm not working on a router, or borderline box for

Which of the FAQ point should be related to my questions?

maybe mount with sync instead of async, though mount warns of
life-shortening possibilities with flash stuff. probably a good idea
to go for noatime also to help coutneract that. Both of those would
minimise the risk of damage -- so long as the current process was
done, you could pull it. that just a guess. check man mount.

how to get keyboard layout with symbols

2007-09-29 Thread H.S.
Hello,

How do I export the current keyboard layout to a file (eps preferably)
with symbols?

I am trying with Indic layouts (IN) with the following command:
$> xkbprint -eps -label symbols :0 -o ~/tmp/kb.eps

But the labels of the keys in the eps file I get are the Unicode codes
for the keys, I get no symbols. What am I missing? For the US keyboard
layout, however, I get the symbols. This is on Debian Testing.

why does it fail to start? have you looked at any of the relevant
logs? Frankly I don't have much experience with mysql, but the reason
you are getting apt errors is because it fails to start. I suppose the
information apt is giving you is a little mis-leading because it has
appaerntly completed all its installation tasks except for restarting
the server. The fact that the server failed to restart is generating
the error in apt. So, you need to figure out why its not starting.

No permutation of apt/dpkg stuff will solve this problem except
perhaps removing and reinstalling it.

If I had this problem, I would stop messing with apt/dpkg and start
figuring out why its not starting. Read the logs. start it from a
command line directly instead of the init-script. figure out how to
turn up the verbosity. etc etc etc. Once you get it to start, then you
can re-run the apt commands and it will clear out just fine.

you are running testing. It is entirely possible that there is a bug
that is preventing mysqld from starting. It might be worth your while
to search BTS and see if anything applies.

But, to restate. Apt is failing because the service won't restart. If
you can make the service start, then apt will no longer fail.

Thanks. That was the problem. Recompiled my kernel and flash is working

entropy gathering module

2007-09-29 Thread John K Masters
Just configured a new VPS and when I try to get mail for the user (as
opposed to root) I get 'no entropy gathering module detected' as a fatal
error. If I run 'mail' as root there are no errors (and no mail)

I've googled for this but the few results yeild no solutions except to
point to a permissions problem, but no solution.

Can anyone help?

It's far more powerful in filtering too. When pump was filling my
/var with meaningless logging, syslog-ng was very easy to configure to
/dev/null them.

The debian stumpwm package dependency are: sbcl cl-clx-sbcl.

Would you please give for us the step by step advices how to install
from CVS stumpwm?

Just in any case, if you have stumpwm installed from CVS on Debian,
how can you uninstall (purge) it? (For case if the Debian stumpwm
package come usable.)

Hello ,..

im thinkg about giving a package the abuilty to download and compile
the last source is it wise ?

since i don't know how to create sevral arch binary package
(amd64,i386,etc .. ).

and the auther is releasing relvtly fast (on svn) updates

the compile time isn't so big (the program is some where around 1k
lines of code) and it is one source file .

so i thought about downloading from svn and compiling each time .

p.s.

also adding sevral dependencies like : gcc ,make ,kernel-hedares

I had the same when I installed the 2.6.18-5-686 kernel. The files were
in /boot, but /etc/lilo.conf hadn't been updated, therefore running lilo did
nothing. I commented out the stanzas for the bf2 kernel, and added the
stanzas for the new 2.6.18-5 one, ran lilo, and now it's on lilo's menu.

The reason I asked about the 6 menu items limit was because I seem to remember
that during the adding of new kernels previously, that apt-get would prompt
you for lilo, mentioning something about the boot block, and if you wanted to
run lilo, and install it in the MBR. Now my lilo's arn't in the MBR, but in
the / partition for my 2 Debian installs on this drive. Grub for FC2 is in
the MBR, as it is the 1st Linux install on the drive. Not wishing Grub to be
replaced, I said no to the apt-get yes/no request, and ran lilo after the
install had completed. Now that I've effectively removed the references to
the bf2 kernel I may remove this latest kernel, and try reinstalling it, just
to see if I get this prompt for lilo with apt-get.

Regarding Grub. At least on Fedora it works fine, and all kernel updates are
added to it's menu. You can add as many kernels as you like. I suspect after
a while you get a scroll bar to look through them. Saying that though, with
fedora I also use Apt, but if you use Yum, which is the default package
manager on Fedora, it only keeps 2 kernels as default, but you can change
that behaviour so that all kernels are saved. Personally I think it's best
that all kernels are saved, then you can decide which ones are no longer
required.

As I mention above I commented out the stanzas for the bf2 in /etc/lilo.conf,
and renamed the bf2 files in /boot. I'll clean that up later on as everything
appears to be working ok now.

Spring clean

Hi all

Even though it is now approaching fall/autumn (in the northern
hemisphere anyway), I am wanting to do some spring cleaning of my hard

load of packages that I probably don't need. One example is multiple

Can someone recommend a newbie-friendly easy, and safe way of cleaning

I first encountered lilo on Mandrake 9.2, and must admit that I had terrible
problems with both LiLo, and Grub when I first started off with Linux, and
setting up dual, and triple boot installs. I've sort of got them under
control now, but it wasn't much fun at the time. Now the bootloader for the
first install goes in the MBR, and the bootloaders for the subsequent
installs go in their respective / partitions. Then I boot up the first
install and add chainloaders pointing to the / partitions of the other
distros on the drive.

I've temporarily renamed the bf2 files in /boot, and commented out the stanzas
for the bf2 kernel in /etc/lilo.conf, but am going to remove them completely
as they are no longer useable on Etch.

I usually keep all kernels. Alright the ones that don't boot properly can go,
but sometimes older, non udev ones, are usefull to keep if you are appearing
to have problems with the udev ones. I constantly get problems with udev
kernels and my TVcard /dev/video0, and the webcam /dev/video1. Very hit and
miss as to which app gets which video device.

Someone on the list gave me some rules for udev, but they don't appear to be
working. I'll have to start a new thread on that one.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, and I actually met those, and it may have "worked" except I could
never get it started as I just didn't know how. It may be because I am
not a lisper, but it just seemed very esoteric. There were no direct
instructions of what to do to get things running. For instance, what
command do you use and where? I just never did get it running and the
/usr/share/doc... stuff didn't really help me at all.

Also, finding out later that the Debian SBCL has a problem and causes
the entire system to virtually stop running if you do any CPU intensive
tasks I have very strong doubts it would be a good idea to run stump
that way in the first place. Much better I think to go ahead and
compile sbcl yourself.

> Would you please give for us the step by step advices how to install
> from CVS stumpwm?

First I installed SBCL via apt. This is because you have to have a lisp
to compile sbcl (odd, huh?) and that one works fine. I am sure clisp or
cmucl would work too, but I already had sbcl because I was trying to get
stump working, and so I used it. Of course, YMMV. I then grabbed the
source to sbcl from their website, untarred it and changed to that
directory. In there I configured it (not sure exactly how as it was a
while ago) to install in my home directory rather than in /usr/local.
This way it would not interfere, even temporarily with my system sbcl
which I was using to compile it. It also makes uninstalling as easy as
deleting the sbcl dirs in my home folder. Apps like sbcl are hard to
uninstall and so this works well for me. Just export SBCL_HOME in your
.bashrc with something like
"export SBCL_HOME=/home/cothrige/lisp/lib/sbcl" and then `source ~/.bashrc'.

I then started sbcl and typed the following one at a time at the prompt,
to install clx:

* (require 'asdf)
* (require 'asdf-install)
* (asdf-install:install 'clx)

This will download and install everything for you. BTW, I installed it
system-wide, but I don't think it matters if you use your home directory
for sbcl as I did. If you use /usr/local or some such it will obviously
matter. Then I closed SBCL and grabbed the stump source this way:

cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/stumpwm login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/stumpwm co stumpwm

(BTW, press return for the password on the first one.)

This will create a stumwpm directory. Cd there and do the following:

autoconf
./configure
make

That will do it. It defaults to sbcl, and if you have installed sbcl to
a place in your path you will have no trouble at all. There is no make
install or the like as you run it from this directory. What you do is
move the stumpwm folder to wherever you like and then just invoke that
in your .xinitrc. If I left it in my home directory for instance, it
would be like this:

exec ~/stumpwm/stumpwm

There is a sample .stumpwmrc file in the stumpwm directory, but it has
nothing on the mode-line in it. If you are interested in that you will
need something for it. It isn't too bad to get configured once it is up
and running, though I found all of it to be somewhat vague. If you
think you would like it I will gladly post up a copy of my stumpwmrc
file and you can look at that to see if you see anything which may help
you.

> Just in any case, if you have stumpwm installed from CVS on Debian,
> how can you uninstall (purge) it? (For case if the Debian stumpwm
> package come usable.)

Well, the nice thing is since it doesn't install at all you just delete
the entire stumpwm directory and that really does purge it. The way I
did things nothing left my home folder at all, which made cleanup much
easier. And the way I kept messing it up with trial and error that
approach came in handy, believe me.

I hope this helps you get it running. Once I did I really liked it,
though I didn't end up staying with full time. Maybe I just liked the
challenge of making it work. ;-)

Good luck on it.

If you use aptitude, or synaptic then you must to manually select
there packages you want to purge. After you have purged those
packages, you should to purge orphaned packages, I think. For this you
may to use 'sudo aptitude purge $(deborphan)' command.

aptitude *should* more or less deal with the orphaned packages
already. BUt otherwise, I agree, aptitude is the way to go, through
the gui. It takes a little time to dig through it all, but if you can
focus on removing higher-level packages, it won't take long to see
significant numbers of extraneous libs and supporting packages getting
wiped out.

I was subscribed to stumpwm list and get an instruction how to start stumpwm:
->
Have you read /usr/share/doc/stumpwm/README.Debian [3]? It contains
information about how to start StumpWM.
-<
->
There's an open Debian bug about how to start StumpWM for CL newbies,
it's bug #356948 [4]. As you can read at [5], I'm working on a
solution for bug #356948 and a new Debian package is expected in the
next two weeks.

[5] http://common-lisp.net/pipermail/cl-debian/2007-July/002634.html
-<
->
If you want to start StumpWM from Emacs (which is not my advice),
fire-up SLIME and then give only the two last commands:

  * (asdf:oos 'asdf:load-op 'stumpwm)
  * (stumpwm:stumpwm)

My advice is to start the swank in ~/.stumpwmrc. Then once StumpWM
has started you can launch Emacs and connect to the running StumpWM
from SLIME with `slime-connect'.

Howewer, because I'm CL newbie, I can't to start stumpwm on Debian Etch.

I tried this too, and I think it takes a great deal for granted. There
is just too much assumed about what you know for this stuff to work,
IMHO.

Yes, I tried this, but it didn't work for me. And swank has its own
troubles, as far as newbies are concerned. I did get it working kind
of, but it was never too solid, and tends to cause more problems than it
would ever be worth to me. Since I am a lisp newb I just doubt that
there is much I can do in the way of hacking stump on the fly. ;-)

> Howewer, because I'm CL newbie, I can't to start stumpwm on Debian Etch.

I feel your pain brother. Believe me, the thing to do is to just use
CVS stump, compile it to run with sbcl and then load it via .xinitrc.
That way it just runs like any other WM, and is loaded in the same way.
Way better method if you ask me.

Aptitude works the same way apt-get does. It just deals with
dependencies better.
To install you just have to use:aptitude install PACKAGE
to remove you just use: aptitude remove PACKAGE

To resolve the problems between udev and your tv-card, you might
consider blacklisting the respective modules and loading the modules in

To solve another kind of udev problem on my system, I created an

Since you're used to apt-get, keep using that. Use deborphan to help you

OK. As I recall, it has to do with the kernel mainly because of the

really important just now.

Can you detail more about what you did?

Right now, I added in the sources for sid/unstable to

I guess the next best thing to do now is to set up my machine to pin

Yes. That's an idea. Non udev kernels (2.6.8, and 2.6.11) that use devfs have
no problems. The TV PCI card is constantly /dev/video0, and the USB webcam
is /dev/video1. As soon as Udev enters the equation it's anybodies guess,
what will be what. At the moment on Fedora 7, where I have the same problem,
I have 2 desktop launchers for Xawtv. One pointing to /dev/video0, and the
other to /dev/video1. If one doesn't work, I try the other. It is a bit of a
joke to have to do this though.

Having had problems with USB stuff before, where the USB is started early in
the boot process I think I might try blacklisting just the ov511 driver for
the USB webcam, and then add it, with it's options to /etc/modules. If that
doesn't work, I'll leave it blacklisted, and put it in rc.local, which is run
last, and give that a try.

I'll post back on the results.

I don't know much about the state of nvidia drivers in lenny, but to pin
your install you just need:

APT::Default-Release "testing";

in /etc/apt/apt.conf (create it if if doesn't exist). You can check by
running 'apt-cache policy'. You should get a higher priority (990) for
lenny. Packages from sid you can install by running:

aptitude install -t unstable package

I went ahead and did that, fixed another problem (dynamic mmap running
out of room), and
installed (but haven't yet enabled) the new kernel 2.6.22-k7 from sid.

But when I try to install nvidia-kernel-common and

seem like I really want to do this yet.

I do my housekeeping in aptitude interactive mode, with a flat package
list (this is my default, but you can get one from the menu) where I
mark everything as auto-installed (press M) that I don't specifically
want. It might take a while, but aptitude will then remove all
unnecessary stuff.

You probably already tried to reduce the Playback level for the mic (to
make sure it is not some weird feedback effect).

Check the full output of amixer for the Mic Boost settings. I would put
it at 1.00 dB or even 0.00 dB for a start.

If you cannot improve the recording quality by reducing the Mic Boost
then you could try to successively turn all capture controls to zero
until you find the one that causes the distorting amplification. I
recommend using "alsamixer" for this; it has a curses-based interface
which gives you a good overview of the playback and capture controls.
You can switch between the two groups of controls by pressing the TAB
key; use CURSOR LEFT/RIGHT to select a control, CURSOR UP/DOWN to change
volume/amplification, and SPACE to toggle capture.

The names and the interaction of the capture channels are not the same
for all cards, unfortunately. Therefore you are left with trial and
error, but I am pretty sure that one of them will allow you reduce the
amplification to a reasonable value. The names of the controls are
sometimes confusing or at least not really helpful; for example, my
Intel ICH8 card has a control called "Digital" which determines the
amplification of the recordings. If I set it to its maximum value of 30
dB then I get the same kind of problems that you described in your
earlier mail.

Are you using an initrd? (Using an initrd is the default for the stock
Debian kernels.)

Maybe the modules are included in your initrd and loaded so early in the
boot process that the modprobe.d settings are bypassed.

You can check your initrd like this:

zcat /boot/initrd.img-$(uname -r) | cpio --list | egrep 'fan|thermal|processor'

(I know that this works for yaird-generated initrds, and I think it
should also work with the ones from mkinitrd.)

Well, I do not really use aptitude, but I really don't think this
is the best approach for you to install the nvidia drivers.

I have an FX 5200 here, too, and what I did was install
module-assistant and then run m-a a-i nvidia. Worked like a charm.

It should be noted, though, that if you're running a kernel version
greater than 2.21, I think, you may run into problems with
paravirtualization, since the precompiled kernels from 2.21 on come
with that option turned on by default, which disallows non-GPL kernel
modules. If you wanna keep a new kernel you will have to recompile it
without that option.

   Hope this helps.

Whenever I need to install nVidia drivers, I just go to their web page
and download the appropriate installer for Linux. It usually compiles
the drivers and installs them without any hassles. I had problems with
getting the drivers from standard Debian repositories to work in the
past, but the nVidia installer works all the time. I would suggest to
try it and see how it goes for you.

Trying to get a network printer HP LaserJet (tm) 2100tn to print from
debian that I got for free.
I got it to print from windows because it had some Java aplet that
downloaded DLL
and did a windows install and it will print from Windows now.
The software it installed was called "HP internet Printer Connection".

Any how, KDE's add printer cannot scan and find the printer???
So, I can't add it. Should I try to add it as
and IPP printer or other type?
I tried entering the IP address in the add printer dialog,
but then it show blank selection for chooing the model
and maker of the printer on the next page of the KDE add printer
dialog.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
J

No, why should it not be possible to manually login? As I mentioned,
when I disable PAM, and enable password authentication and empty
passwords, then I *can* login that way and nxserver starts and waits
for me to enter commands.

The default has an empty passphrase.

I tried with nxserver_3.0.0-69_i386.deb, nxnode_3.0.0-83_i386.deb and
nxclient_3.0.0-78_i386.deb.
