bootcd hangs at boot time

2004-06-24 Thread zorgh
Hi

I somehow made my own bootcd from Debian.

System: CPU Athlon XP 1 Ghz, RAM 1024Mb, Debian (sid), kernel
2.6.5(with devfs enabled), bootcd 4.21

I burned a dvd+rw. When my computer boots from it, it stops in middle
of booting and hangs.

mount_devfs_fs(): unable to mount devfs, err: - 2

Somebody please tell me what I should do to fix these problems.

Thanks in advance!

add 'exit 0' to the top of the init.d script, make the script not

I tried installing all this stuff, but I stil could not make xconfig. I
then tried compiling the Trolltech qt libary in /usr/local, but with the
same result. In both cases "make xconfig" produces a whole lot of errors
and finally says:

scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:782: confused by earlier errors, bailing out

I'm confused too. I don't think the new method in 2.6 is an improvement.
The only thing I can think of is that my kernel files (vanilla kernel,
not the deb package) is corrupt, but "make menuconfig" is OK and the
resultant kernel runs without problems. But perhaps I should fetch it
again and retry.

Re: Trick to burning a bootable Debian CD?

2004-06-24 Thread Steve Kleiser
Burning the CD as an image using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 on my WindowsXP
machine results in a CD with a directory structure that looks like it
should, from Explorer (it's comparable to my purchased CD, which does boot).
Presumably, the image also provided any required system files. But can I
confirm that from within WindowsXP? Also, is it OK to use a CD-RW, or is
there some subtle difference? Does the CD need to formatted first, or would
that just impress "non-Linux-ness" onto it?

Are there any freeware utilities to burn an ISO image to CD (e.g.,
iso2CD.exe or something) that run under Windows? The CD burning applications
appear to contain numerous features I don't need for this particular
purpose, and which only serve as potential sources of error.

I have installed 2.6.6-2-386 (for k6-2?) and have the same problem.
Moreover the error messages refer to /lib/modules/2.6.6-1-386/...

I don't want to spend the time to build a new kernel right now and I

Is there a way to fix this with a stock kernel. Is there a better

i think that in lilo (grub) you haven't specified the corect root
partition. to identify the root partition you cand use the "df" command
and search for the "/" partition. thet is the one you should use as root.

if you use lilo try to edit lilo.conf and add the folowing line under the
image you want to load
root=/dev/hdax

x means the number coresponding to / partition

You cannot determine by examining the file structure whether or not a
CD is bootable.

> But can I confirm that from within WindowsXP?

The way bootable CDs work is to have a floppy image at the front of
the CD which is loaded by the BIOS into memory and assumed by the rest
of the computer to be a floppy disk from there on in. The scheme is
called (I think) el torito and is described in technical detail here:
http://www.phoenix.com/resources/specs-cdrom.pdf

I'm a bit stumped as to how you could confirm it from within windows
XP. If you a UNIX environment such as cygwin or mingw or a livecd like
knoppix you could inspect the cd outside of the filesystem by
operating on the cd-rom block device and using tools like dd.

I'd doubt it would make much difference, and I don't think formatting
would be necessary - but the boot block would need to be written as
above.

Nero (www.ahead.de) is not free but available for a time-limited
trial; and I know from experience that it is relatively straight
forward to both write an existing el torito ISO and to create new
ones.

Oh I forgot to mention - jigdo is a free utility that can be used for
assembling bootable install CDROMs for Debian. So, somewhere in that
free tool set is a process of creating the boot block for an ISO.

The fetchmail homepage is at http://catb.org/~esr/fetchmail/. The

I would strongly advise not going the new-install route. Thats
avoiding your problems rather than solving them. It may take more
effort to fix your problems as they stand but you'll get a lot more
out of it in the long-run.

Same result, no X

I copied the serverflags section from redhat8's XF86Config, where it worked
fine.
What does debian demand of syntax here?

I've got "xset s off" in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. Works fine.

No, does not help. Could be because the system setup here is rather
special, a kiosk mode.

I tried to use the xset command when I ran redhat on these boxes, and I
had the same problem. The solution then was the section serverflags in
the XF86Config file as described. So I am quite sure I have to stick to
it and get the syntax right in the section serverflags

From linux single start and the startx I get the error message:
Config Error: /etc/X11/XF86Config:269 (wich is the line where the
first option in the section serverflags starts)

_Option_ "BlankTime" "0"

Remark here that it is the Option word that is underlined in the

tell me that 'Option' is an invalid keyword in this section?

The Xserver used is xserver-s3

Re: A bunch of questions

2004-06-24 Thread Kent West
deb_milist wrote:
3. and how about the colorful console that has been made me jelous to
those knoppix users ?
I assume you're talking about the boot-up process. That's a two-part thing.
The first part is having framebuffer enabled. As I understand it (and I
_don't_ understand it), the framebuffer essentially turns your text
console into a graphics-capable text console, sort of, in a way, kindda.

The second part is that Knoppix has customized tweaks in the boot-up
scripts (/etc/rc*) that provide those colors. You can do the same thing
with Debian, but it's not just a simple matter of editing a Yes/No
question in some config file; it's a lot of customization. And the next
time you upgrade your Debian box and those boot files get upgraded,
boom, there go your customizations. Since this is Debian, I'm sure you
can code a work-around for that, but again, there's some
customization/programming involved.

If you just want colors, like say in your prompt at the command line,
you can tweak your PS1 variable in your login scripts (~/.bashrc, etc).
I've done that, but I also introduced a bug in my prompt so that at the
bottom of the terminal window scrolling doesn't quite work right on long
command lines. I've never bothered to fix it. Here's what my current PS1
line looks like as an example:

Thu Jun 24 07:16:54
-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/westk> echo $PS1
\n\n\d
\t\n-\n\[\033[1;34m\]\u\[\033[1;[EMAIL PROTECTED];32m\]\H\[\033[1;36m\]]:\]\033[1;31m\]$PWD\[\033[1;36m\]>
\[\033[0m\]
The date, time, dotted lines are normal black; the first "westk" is in
blue; the brackets are light blue; the @hostname in the brackets is
green; the path is red; and the final greater-than is light blue.

This way, if I log in with another user (such as root), I know I'm not
my normal user. Alternatively, I could have coded my root's prompt to
flash red as a warning not to do something stupid while root.

(PS; separating your questions into separate emails, with more
descriptive subject lines, is more likely to get you responses.)

recording the URL and using the default system browser.

This is true. The fact is that both formats are lossy to a computer, but
not a priori audibly lossy to humans, and more: the encoders need not be
coherent. I mean, It would not be strange if you take and mp3-encoded
sound, decode it, and re-encode it to mp3 *again*, and it sounded worse.

I've been told that this worsening of the signal happens to ac3 (MD)
encoding just after a lot of re-encodings... Like 30!...

Of course if you use the same encoder, this is less likely to happen.
Different mp3 encoders may have this effect strongly... mp3 to ogg would
be even worse, and then you go.

But I doubt that anyone would hear the effects on a bad amplifier system
like the ones from pocket MP3-player. And more: It wold not matter if
you're deconding ogg and recoding to mp3 when you're lowering the
bitrate anyway, so you can fit more musics in you player.

Anyway, test it and be happy. I'm just showing off because I'm an
electrical engineer :)

And at last: personal experience is everything that really matters on
this subject!...

Hi!

I figured out what is the problem, but I don't know how to fix it:
After the ./configure in the kdebase dir, I get this message:

checking for X... libraries /usr/X11/lib, headers .

So the configure script didn't find the header files. It is interesting,
because I have the header files in my /usr/X11R6/include directory.

Anyone knows, what this configure script is looking for? What is it
checking? Maybe it is a missing .h file, or something else?

Thanks for any help!

Strange, I received my notice last week of the increased storage amounts, but
nothing in it stated that they had removed POP or forwarding access. I just
checked and my options panel still shows that area. I'm on the .ca version of
Yahoo, not the .com. Perhaps that makes a difference?

I would imagine that if they started this, then one wouldn't be able to use
Yahoo groups in an e-mail context either. As far as I know, that hasn't been
removed either, as I receive several "Groups" like this as well.

Additionally this is the first I've heard of it. None of the other folks using
the same access, (on my Yahoo lists or other Yahoo subscribers, I know
personally) have noticed what you two are saying. Can anyone point to
any official verbiage from Yahoo confirming that this has been implemented?

That's good and necessary as a first step.

Now you need to find out whether PHP is attempting a connection to
PostgreSQL. If it isn't, it's a PHP or Apache problem. If it is, it

Are there any freeware utilities to burn an ISO image to CD (e.g.,
iso2CD.exe or something) that run under Windows? The CD burning applications
appear to contain numerous features I don't need for this particular
purpose, and which only serve as potential sources of error.

Oh I forgot to mention - jigdo is a free utility that can be used for
assembling bootable install CDROMs for Debian. So, somewhere in that
free tool set is a process of creating the boot block for an ISO.
http://atterer.net/jigdo/, http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/.

There seems to be a certain amount of confusion here, so I'll leap right
in and try to clarify.

On Linux, to create a bootable CD for peecees you first need a bootable
floppy disk image. Its contents depend on what you want to do, it can
contain the preliminary part of a Linux (or *BSD) installer, it can
contain Freedos or even the first part of a Windows (or OS/2) installer.

The floppy image can be any valid size including 2.88 Mbytes. Mostly, I
don't see a point to making a smaller one for a CD, but if you already
have a smaller (like 1.44) on that's fine.

You then create an image (ISO) file containing the bootable floppy and
anything else you need. The commandline tool for this is mkisofs, and
there are various wrappers for it incliding toast/roast in their names,
and the brilliantly-named k3b. I don't know precisely the names of the
others, I always use mkisofs.
man mkisofs for details.

If you want Winders to recognose long filenames, you will want the
option for joliet (no, joilet has nothing to do with being bootable),
and if its a *x filesystem you will want rock-ridge extensions.

The debian folk have helpfully done everything up to here for you, and
all you need to do is download the images and burn them to CD.

On *x we generally use cdrecord (which, I think can also be had for
Winders), another commandline utility. Your favourite GUI wrapper will
use it too. On Mac OSX (panther) you can use the Disk Utility or the
commandline program hdiutil.

Rewritable CDs are fine, you don't need to preformat them but you do
need to erase them. This can be done in the same run of cdrecord as you
use for the burn. If cdrecord is configured properly, this command will
do it with rewritables:
cdrecord -blank=fast -eject some.iso

"-eject" tells cdrecord to spit the CD out at the finish, quite a useful
way to tell you it's finished.

On many/most Linux systems, it seems you need to turn on DMA first:
hdparm -d1 -u1 /dev/cdrom
otherwise the system can become somewhat erratic for a time. Reportedly
though, some CD burners don't place nice with DMA.

Jigdo is a utility package that can split out CD images into a template
containing pretty much erverything except the files. Another component
takes the templates and fills in the blanks from one or more other sources.

There are some benefits to this:
1. You can get the template from a remote site, it's not very big in
comparison with the CD image
and
1a You can get the files (mostly deb packages in Debian) locally, even
from an older release if you want. It's handy way to update 3.0r0 to
3.0r2. If you don't have them all, no probs you can get the rest (and
updates ) from your favourite mirror.

2. You can create official CD images even if your local mirror doesn't
have them.

I don't know how you burn the CD images to CDs in Windows: check the CD
ISO images and Jigdo page for details.

Note that in Woody, _all_ the x86 CD images are bootable. Read the
installation manul for the details on their differences.

higher performance in knoppix

2004-06-24 Thread Nathan
Recently I was playing around with Knoppix 3.4, and I decided to check
out glxgears performance. After loading the nVidia driver, I got
1500-1700 frames per second. The interesting thing is that on the same
exact computer, with Debian unstable running, I only get around 800.

I've looked at the XFree configs, and they're effectively the same. Does
anyone have any idea what would cause an approximately 100% increase in
performance?

Thanks,

Nathan

libc6-dev for stable

2004-06-24 Thread Mark Copper
Hi,

I am trying to build mod_perl from source on this machine:
 Linux 2.4.25-vs1.26 #2 Fri Feb 20 22:48:22 PST 2004 i686 unknown

My first problem was installing libc6-dev in stable. This appears not
to work currently. There is a related (broken) thread from April:
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/04/msg00691.html

My work-around was to install libc6 from testing and then libc6-dev
installed without complaint. But when calling "perl Makefile.PL" on
mod_perl a la "Developer's Cookbook", I get this error:
   In file included from mod_rewrite.c:50:
mod_rewrite.h:90: ndbm.h: No such file or directory
But "usr/include/db1/ndbm.h" belongs to libc6-dev.

Is libc6-dev my problem? Has anyone worked around this?

Thanks,
Mark

The last information on Cyrus was sent to this list in May and states

I am happy to help test the new packages on my mail servers running

That's good and necessary as a first step.

Now you need to find out whether PHP is attempting a connection to

may be a PostgreSQL authentication problem.

wellI just found it out by

all i need to dig out now is postgre accessing security. since

I've looked at a file called global.inc which, I guess,  hold the

hostname and
database port. the value is :   $host = "127.0.0.1";   ---> i made
it myself

my problem probably in pg_hba.conf, which untill now, i haven't figure
out how.
the script which is called to make connection to postgre is like this :

function opendb() {
    global $host, $username, $database, $password;
    $dbconn = pg_connect("host=$host, dbname=$database user=$username
password=$password") or die("Cannot connect");

i'm no PHP expert so i dunno if it's just like i guess.
well.i guess, i still have a job to do :-(

2004-06-24 Thread Curt Howland
I've used apt-spy before, but this time I put the resulting "closest"
server at the top of the list in /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main
contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib

This seems to have made the difference. I like having more than one
source, and http.us.debian.org as a last resort since it's likely to
be kept updated even if all others fail, but I don't want to overuse
the "primary".

The updates are coming in at about 375KB/s (cable), which is very nice
indeed.

"Information about 15030 package(s) was updated."

limiting the speed of ramdisks

2004-06-24 Thread Jonathan Dowland
Hello,

I want to limit the speed of ramdisks so they are not running `as fast
as possible'.

This is so I can perform some experiments with parallel reads (e.g.
RAID-0) without involving hard disks, and be able to see speed
improvements.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I am using `old style' ramdisks
(/dev/ram*) currently. Failing that, does anyone know which procedures
should be augmented with delays to simulate slower drives? I may resort
to writing a patch myself.

kernel install on a Cobalt Raq4

2004-06-24 Thread Erwin van der Horst
Hi,

Anyone succeeded in installing a Debian Woody distribution on a Cobalt Raq
(4)?
Pleasy help me out. Perhaps this is a more generic question, how to install a
Debian kernel on an empty machine (only with debootstrap initialized), which
is temporarly booted from the net with NFS.

I followed the fine instructions on http://cobalt.iceblink.org/debian/debian-
cobalt-howto.txt and succeeded for most steps. When I got at step 9, to
download a debian kernel, me as newbie, don't know where start from here.

I tried to downloaded the kernel-image-2.4.18-k6 package and all its
dependencies from the debian site and installed them on the system (dpkg).

The installation of some packages gave some errors which i did not know how
to resolve. I was chrooted to the new and mounted filesystem root.

The dpkg with sysvinit gave some timeout errors:
init: timeout opening/writing control channel /dev/initctl

And dpkg with the kernel image gave:
 Failed to create initrd image.
  dpkg: error processing kernel-image-2.4.18-k6 (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 29
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   kernel-image-2.4.18-k6

I bzip2'ed the vmlinuz-2.4.18-k6 to /boot/vmlinux.bz2 (according the install
instructions) but the bootup failed with various error messages.

Anyone can help me with this?

On many/most Linux systems, it seems you need to turn on DMA first:
hdparm -d1 -u1 /dev/cdrom

What does that unmaskirq mean?

On IA32 systems, interupts can be turned off (masked), potentially for
long (by computer standards) periods. Typically this happens when an
interrupt occurs (it's part of the interrupt handling), and the
interrupt handler turns them back on when it's finished saving the
system state and generally sorted itself out. However, there has been
some buggy hardware around and so the drivers take a more conservative
approach, one that isn't good for performance but also doesn't crash
those buggy systems.

"-u1" turns off that conservative approach.

I've looked at the XFree configs, and they're effectively the same. Does
anyone have any idea what would cause an approximately 100% increase in

Why not copy the Knoppix config and see if being precisely the same make

kernel install on a Cobalt Raq4

2004-06-24 Thread Erwin van der Horst
Hi,

Anyone succeeded in installing a Debian Woody distribution on a Cobalt Raq(4)?

I had the same problem. Check out bug #250393 at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=250393

The solution is to install one of gstreamer-alsa, gstreamer-oss or
gstreamer-esd.

I didn't see any packages for it, but in CPAN there is a DBD-Interbase
module you could probably look at.

I was having difficulty compiling that module - that's why I wanted a
pre-made .deb package. I was also having problems installing Firebird
(non-packaged version). After some other suggestions, I deleted the
check for the "ex" editor in the Firebird installation script and got
version 1.5 to install. After that, the CPAN module installed. So I'm
operational - just wishing I was using a fully packaged system. Sigh.
I guess I'll have to wait for some generous and willing soul to re-adopt
Firebird for Debian - something I'm willing, but not qualified for.

Sorry about the delay. Had to deal with other emergencies (the urgent
vs. the important). Haven't fixed it yet. Another monitor made no
difference.

I did some more googling on resetting video cards and found some
references to people who have had their video cards stop working after X
crashed. It seems that if X doesn't quit properly it can leave the
video card in an unusable state (at least for text mode). The solution
is to use some scripts from svgalib called savetextmode and textmode.
These scripts use the program restoretextmode to save the current state
of the video cards registers in some temporary files. Later, if you
start having a problem with your video card, you can run textmode which
will restore the registers from the temporary files and, hopefully,
bring the video card back into working order. Unfortunately, you have
to run savetextmode when the video is working correctly (e.g.
immediately after a reboot), so I haven't had a chance to try this yet.
The system is working except for the video and I don't want to bring
everybody down just yet, so it'll be a day or so before I get around to
rebooting the system.

If you have any other ideas let me know.

Thanks.

You could run savetextmode on a machine with as close a configuration
as possible, copy the files over and try it, but check the risks in
doing this, as it is a server that you don't want to reboot, let alone
crash.

Migrating to Debian: questions

2004-06-24 Thread linuxnand
Hello All,

I am new to Debian but I have been using Linux since 1995. I enjoy the idea of Debian
that offers total independence so I am willing very much to learn it well.

I have installed 3.0R2. It installed kernel 2.2 instead of 2.4. Now, how can I use apt
to have the 2.4 installed?

Also, how can I change the sources.list to upgrade my system to the new packages like
gnome 2.6, KDE 3.3, Mozilla 1.7, etc.

I have installed the base system and then did the X window installating followed by
KDE. Everything works but KDE fonts are nasty. How can I fix the fonts? Download more
fonts, or shall I say the appropriate fonts?

How can I setup the sound? Is there any howto? I have installed ALSA with apt-get but
the system does not detect my hardware. Where shall I go for help?

In order to have Kernel 2.6, I guess I have to compile it manually myself, right?
Well, that I have done before. Or can I do it with apt-get.

Thanks in advance.

AUTOFS to mount either via SMB or NFS, how?

2004-06-24 Thread Brian
Hi,
I am running a VDR box that mounts, via AUTOFS an MP3 directory on another
PC. At the moment that PC is running Win98, so I mount via SMBFS, this works.
Now I want to sometimes run the remote PC as a Win98 box, and sometimes as a
Linux (Debian) box. So I am looking for the best way to mount via SMBFS
when the remote is booted with Win98, but to mount via NFS when the remote
is booted as Linux.

I tried two (almost identical) entries in the map dataset for autofs, but if
the first one is not successfull, it doesnt even try the second entry.

I guess I am looking for the best strategy to do this, all I need is the
MP3s to be mounted at the same place each time.

Cheers Brian

how to set up debian from fedora core 2

2004-06-24 Thread Stefan Seefeld
hi there,
I'm following the instructions at
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-preparing.en.html#s-linux-upgrade
to install a debian partition on my machine, i.e. I install debootstrap, then run
it to prepare a debian partition. Then I chroot into that to configure it.
Everything runs more or less smoothly (I'm unable to tell whether the occasional
errors I see in the output are benign or not).

However, when I run 'apt-cache search kernel-image' the first time, I get
a segmentation fault. Running it again outputs nothing. Can anybody help
me getting any further ? Did I miss something ?
Thanks,

leave the hostname completely blank, which would force the use of a Unix

well...the php script which attempt to connect to PostgreSQL is this ( i guess ) :

function opendb() {

as you can see in the script above, there's a coma

If I delete it then web page again displaying error message says that
there's no such host called

that the coma thing is needed.
I'm no PHP expert so I dunno how to fix it. ( the fact that there's no
any coma after $database and so on is quiet make
me confused ).
Before I throwed this question in this room, I have already made some
kind of experiment by changing the $host value
from 127.0.0.1, localhost, hostname, even my IP address. and still not

To make everything more clear, I attach two files which i guess (

History

1 - Introduction
This HOWTO is aimed primarily at people with minimal experience using postgreSQL and
Linux. The original idea being to share my experience and thereby assist other people
in successfully getting techtables up and running on their server.

These notes are specific to the Red Hat versions 8.0 and 9.0 distributions. There are
differences between Red Hat versions 8.0 and 9.0 which are noted throughout the
document. Keep in mind that if you are using another version or a different
distribution, the following will most likely need to be adjusted. However, the basic
steps will still apply.

It also assumes that you have root access to the server. If not, then you will likely
need to cajole your friendly system administrator in helping you or actually doing it
for you.

2 - Preliminary Steps

This first section deals with making sure that the basic environment is in place on
the Linux server.

2-1 - Apache

Run "rpm -qa | grep httpd" to see what rpms are already on your server.

My server has (RH v8.0/posgreSQL v7.2.x):
httpd-devel-2.0.40-11
httpd-2.0.40-11
httpd-manual-2.0.40-11

My server has (RH v9.0/posgreSQL v7.3.x):
httpd-2.0.40-21.1
httpd-manual-2.0.40-21.1

Optionally, make the postgreSQL documentation available via the web server. This
makes if very simple to look things up in the manual. You can make it available by
adding the following to /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:

# postgreSQL manual
Alias /pgsqldoc "/usr/share/doc/postgreSQL-7.2.3/html"

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

For RH v9.0/posgreSQL v7.3.x, change the directory above to
"/usr/share/doc/postgreSQL-7.3.2/html".

Remember that you will have to adjust the file locations if the documentation is
located in a different directory.

By adding the above and restarting your web server, you can then view the postgreSQL
documentation via http:///pgsqldoc. Of course, this change will
not actually display the documentation until you install postgreSQL docs later in the
following steps.

2.2 - PHP

Run "rpm -qa | grep php" to see what rpms are already on your server.

My server has (RH v8.0/posgreSQL v7.2.x):
php-4.2.2-8.0.7
php-manual-4.2.2-8.0.7
php-pgsql-4.2.2-8.0.7

My server has (RH v9.0/posgreSQL v7.3.x):
php-4.2.2-17
php-manual-4.2.2-17
php-pgsql-4.2.2-17

For any rpm missing from your system, obtain it from Re

Make sure that security.debian.org is in your sources.list, and install
the package:

apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686
(or 386, or k7, or whatever architecture you have)
apt-cache search kernel-image
apt-cache show kernel-image-2.4.18-1.686
show you more information. And don't forget to tell lilo to use the
initrd that comes with the 2.4.18 kernel packages.

You can use backported packages (go to ).
However if you want to install many of them, it is possible that
conflicts arise. If you want to have an up to date system, think about
switching to testing or unstable. But keep in mind that only Woody
(3.0) is officially supported by the security team.

There are some ttf fonts in non-free, as well as an installer for the
web core fonts that were formerly distributed by Microsoft (including
Arial and Verdana). Try

apt-get install msttcorefonts
apt-cache search font

Find out which driver you need. can help you.
Add the driver to /etc/modules, and add yourself to the audio group. If
you want to use ALSA instead of the OSS drivers that come with the
precompiled kernel packages, you have to compile the drivers. I think
you can find helpful information here:

> In order to have Kernel 2.6, I guess I have to compile it manually

There are packages available on that you can use
with apt-get. However you will need to upgrade or install a lot of
basic system software as well, including

e2fsprogs, module-init-tools, procps
util-linux (if you want to use the new cryptoapi)
cdrdao, cdrtools (if you want to write CDs without ide-scsi emulation)

By the way, I think all of your questions have been answered before on
this list. Please take a look at the archve (
or , Group linux.debian.user) first the next
time you have questions. You will probably get your answers quicker
that way.

best regards

Check out that you have the right partition type enabled in Advanced
partion types, it's a bit hidden in the options tree. (under xconfig
filesystem->partition types->advanced partition types->pc bios)

For a pc type, it would be the
MSDOS_PARTITION
option. It's absolutely necessary for the kernel to recognize your root
filesystem, and it's not enabled by default in the 2.6.* config file

I hope this helps

OT: Debian/Linux Stickers

2004-06-24 Thread Chris Metcalf
For years I've been searching for a good source of good Linux stickers
for my machines. Sure, we've got Thinkgeek or HackerStickers.com
(http://www.hackerstickers.com/products/sticker-debian-linux.shtml),
but other than that, the best I've been able to find is Tux case
badges.

Does anybody know of a good source of linux/geeky stickers? In
particular, I'm looking for a nice tasteful sticker of Tux on a clear
background around 3" in size, or maybe a nice small "Powered by Linux"
or Debian logo suitable to stick on my laptops in the space where the
"Designed for Windows" sticker used to be.

The other option is to look into getting them made. I've been thinking
about doing this for awhile. Larry Ewing's Tux graphic is public
domain, right? So I wouldn't have to worry about licensing issues. If
I could get enough people to commit, I could look into getting some
made. Pricing would probably be around $2 US per sticker for a lot of
100-200 stickers, so I'd probably price them at $3 + shipping to
wherever you're from, and donate all the profits to Software in the
Public Interest. Any extras I'll probably try and sell on eBay or sell
in bulk off to LUGs.

Let me know if you're interested...

If you haven't already, turn on bash_completion (smart tab completion)
by typing 'source /etc/bash_completion' or entering that into a
.bashrc or similar and restarting your bash.

Then do apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.

By I mean press the tab key. That should show you all the
kernel images available under woody (3.0R2).

For that you need to either use backports, which I think are available
from apt-get.org, or upgrade to testing (sarge) or unstable (sid). To
do this, edit /etc/apt/sources.list, changing all mentions of "woody"
or "stable" to "sarge". Then type apt-get update and then apt-get
dist-upgrade. Be aware that this might not be smooth and there are
currently problems with nautilus in testing and unstable.

You can do it with apt-get, but I'm not sure whether that's only true
for unstable (sid).

what advantage does this have? does it make everything run faster,
even if everything that's in there is compiled as a module and maybe
not loaded, as opposed to into the kernel proper?

> As for soundcore, i think it's in from the 2.4 kernels.

i,m running 2.4.20, but apparently i started with the source and
rolled it myself. as i said, it's been a while since i did this, so i
don't rememeber what i put in there and what i didn't -- but sound has
been working for me for the past year, so i'm really mystified as to
why this would be just coming up now.

right, this is what i was forgetting! thanks!

it appears that the only ones i have in there are the following:

orange:~> grep "SOUND" /boot/config-`uname -r` | egrep -v "^#"
CONFIG_SOUND=y
CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371=m
CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX=y
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m
CONFIG_SOUND_CS4232=m
CONFIG_SOUND_SSCAPE=m
CONFIG_SOUND_SB=m

and I don't see any option for SOUND_CORE or anything like it --
grepping for "CORE" doesn't yield anything.

it may be time to slip in a knoppix CD and see what modules it sticks
in when i get home today ...

thanks for your help and suggestions, as usual.

i tried upgrading to the latest debian release of the yahoo messenger
off their website, but that doesn't work for me, either.

has anyone else been bitten by this, and found a workaround?

thanks,

Re: Migrating to Debian: questions

Hello All,
I am new to Debian but I have been using Linux since 1995.
I am no Debian Expert, but I have been using Linux since 1995 and I have
been a professional systems Admin for about that length of time as well.

You need to use the unstable/experimental branches of the apt
repositories to get all the latest and greatest stuff. I have a
workstation running Debian that has been very stable for many months,
Down below you will see my /etc/apt/sources.list file (carefull of the
line wraps!) I am running 2.6, and KDE 3.x and Mozilla 1.7 and gnome
2.6, without having to compile or package anything myself.

After you set up this sources.list file, I suggest you run the following
commands:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install synaptic
synaptic

Now you will have a very nice and powerfull utility for managing your

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I meant that I had built a custom kernel from
the 2.4.26 kernel-source package and installed that.

I should also mention that snd, snd-hwdep, and some of the others insert

I'd definitely be interested. If/when they're available put up a post
with some info and I'll be all over it. :)

What I would REALLY like to see though, is an actual replacement for the
"powered by Windows *" stickers. Something that's got the same metallic
feel, with either Tux or a gnu on the sticker saying "powered by linux"
or better yet "powered by Free Software". If you can get THOSE made I'll
buy a dozen and I might be able to convince my employers to buy a few
hundred. :)

I agree. If you look hard enough you can usually find Tux stickers on
eBay, so maybe I'll focus more on the metallic "Powered by..."
stickers.

I've got a few graphic designer friends I could probably convince into

Can we get votes on what the "Powerd by..." line should be?

Re: Trick to burning a bootable Debian CD?

2004-06-24 Thread Rich
As far as I am aware, the fact that you can see the directory structure
tells me that you've burned the CD as a bootable image. When I accidentally
burned a non-bootable image, all I could see was one big .iso file. I wasn't
using Roxio, but Nero 6. You can get free versions off the web, but they may
expire after a time. Personally, I find it a nightmare to use when trying to
burn bootables. As you seem to have found with Roxio, it's too easy to do it
the wrong way.

If you do decide to use it, I think the following sequence worked-
Open Nero burning rom and from the 'new compilation' wizard, select 'CD-ROM
(Boot)'
On the 'boot' tab, select 'Image file' and browse for your .iso
In the 'files of type:' section of the browser, select 'all files' to allow
you to find the .iso image.

Also, I used a CD-RW on an XP box and it worked, at least disk 1 of Sarge
did, I'm having trouble with disk 2, but I think that's for different
reasons.

Lastly, when burning the CD, burn it at a slow speed. I'd recommend x8 or
lower.

Failing that, all I can suggest is trying a different CD-RW.

Rich.

to follow up on my own mail, someone just pointed
out to me that I should set up the file '/etc/apt/sources.list'

This seems to solve all issues, at least now I'm happily
continuing the installation.
To whomever it concerns: this should be added to the documentation at
