2003-12-16 Thread Michael D Schleif
Which PDF readers allow blocking and cut-&-paste?

Also, which allow searching for text and phrases?

Re: Redhat to Debian conversion

2003-12-16 Thread Gruessle

I did all that and it still is not working.

So next what I did was install knoppix.

To see if I did the config right.
I don't know how to check the config in knoppix but at the startup
I shaw some things.
The nv video card driver is correct.

Another advatage I have now with knoppis is that I can use webmail on this
machine. So I have added my XFree86.0.log to the end of this file.

Hope someone can help now.

My version of passwd has a --stdin switch which'll read the
password from STDIN, i.e.

echo $password | passwd --stdin $username

If your's doesn't you may want to take a look at expect.

Good question. I tried another site (apt-get.org) with the same
results, so it seems to be a general problem. I printed the same site
with Konqueror and it previewed fine (KDE 2.2.2).

It's probably worth noting my setup is a bit unusual as I have put the
unstable mozilla into a mostly testing system.

xpdf allows cut and paste. It feels funny because it is a
pixel-wise block, but it works.

For searching, it might be enough to use pdftotext | grep
I don't know which other ones allow searching.

It's on a Redhat machine, doesn't look like passwd on debian has this
'feature'. It's PAM aware so just copying it onto a Debian machine would
probably break things, I'm pretty new to Debian and haven't looked at the PAM
side of things yet. I'd have a look at autoexpect which makes it a doddle to
create expect scripts.

Knoppix saving data

2003-12-16 Thread Gruessle

I am trying to use the XFree86 config data from knoppix for Debian.

The only place I could find where I can save data while in knoppix
was the desktop.
After exiting knoppix and going back to Debian I can't find the desktop.
I figure knoppix deleted that folder.

Do you have any solutions I could use besides typing that whole thing in
by hand?

Re: Debian Box and ADSL

2003-12-16 Thread David Baron
Got on!

I can now say pptp hostname (hostname is in hosts as [10.0.0.138] hostname)
and it logs me on.

1. Now I need to know how to get this done on bootup or on logon--without
pppd into neverland (happened once!).

2. Then, some sort of simple-to-configure-and-use firewall.

Any ideas?

Once all this is up and running, I would like to upload a doc somewhere
concisely saying how I got it up. The main instruction came from a knoppix
document, that in German, plus several others. Somewhere along the line, a
script with a UI to get this done more painlessly would be in order.

General debian questions

2003-12-16 Thread Lucas Albers
I had some general questions about debian.
Is their any fundamental reason why apt-get could not use rsync in
addition to it's current method?
This should be inherently faster.??

Creating iso image from jigdo-file.
Assume I want to add in some additional packages onto my stable install cd.
Just do thus:
apt-get -d install packages.
Then copy the deb files to my loopback mounted jigdo iso cd image.
I could then install them with dpgk -i packagename.
How hard is it to make it so apt-get when pointing to the cd as a
repositry, can install the packages correctly?

I was planning to recompile my kernel and include the 2.4.22-1-686 kernel
on the stable install cd.
The problem I am encountering is stable won't see the network card on new
machines such as the e1000 card on some integrated motherboards.
So I have to take the machine apart and stick in a old card, get the
network working, then download a new kernel.
I don't want testing,knoppix,redhat CD's.
I want a 1 cd 1 boot installation solution.

Do you think we are going to have some gpg checking of packages, as the
default for apt-get anytime soon?

Edit your /etc/ppp/peers/provider file and add following content:

All other options should be turned off. Then test your configuration

Okay, I assume this is the output from XFree on Debian Woody.

This looks like you configured XFree using dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86.

So the driver is right and your card is found.

Aha! Try to set that to "False".

Rerun dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. The program will remember the
settings you chose the last time. In most cases, you can just press the
enter key. However, when asked if you want to use the kernel
framebuffer, select "no".

Honestly, I don't know. But you still can install a 2.4 Kernel on your
system without reinstalling. Make sure security.debian.org is in your
sources.list, and run

apt-get istall kernel-image-2.4.18-bf2.4
to install the 2.4 installation kernel
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686
to install the image for pentium II and later systems. There are also
images for 386, 586, k6 and k7 systems. If you don't use the bf kernel,
make sure you tell lilo to use the initrd for the kernel you installed.
Your current kernel will not be removed and can be loaded by selecting
"LinuxOld" from within the lilo startscreen. You maybe want to
uncomment the "#promt" line in your lilo.conf as well.

The problem I face with my local dealer (Evesham) is not compatibility.
That is already there. The problem is that I don't want Windows, and
don't want to pay for it since I won't sign the EALA, and don't want to
support Big Bill's pension fund.

They (Evesham) refuse to sell without Windows XP.

Iptables can't locate its modules

2003-12-16 Thread Anthony Campbell
I'm trying to set up iptables using kernel 2.4.23. I've installed
iptables and iptables-dev from testing and I've enabled CONFIG_NETFILTER
but all attempts to execute the iptables commands produces:

root:~:# iptables -F
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.9: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need
to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Google produces various references to this problem but no solutions that
I can see. Should I have included other things in the kernel? Any simple
documentation for this?

Or is it perhaps overkill for a standalone machine, albeit one that is
constantly connected to the met?

This list is the right place for you if you use Debian and have
questions about using it. However, please make sure that whenever you
have some "stupid" question, you take a look at the archive of the list
first. The probability is high that someone has asked your question
before you and even got an answer. You can read the archive at

Once you have booted Knoppix open a console window then type in:
sudo mount /dev/hd?? /mnt/hd??
sudo cp /mnt/hd??/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /mnt/hd??/etc/X11/
XF86Config-4.backup
sudo cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /mnt/hd??/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Replace ?? with drive letter and number of the Debian / partition, the
first step mounts the / partition. The second copies the Debian X
configuration to a backup and the third copies the Knoppix
configuration to the Debian install you will want to answer yes to
overwriting the file. You may also want to change the protocol used by
the mouse from auto to whatever you will be using or X will fail to
start and you are going to get errors due to all the fonts not being
installed that are in the Knoppix file so you will want to compare both
files and comment out the lines as necessary.

You could mount a disk (floppy or hard) and then "save" (cp) it there.
But I'm worried that would require you learning how.

Another option is to get it from the list archive, since it seems I
already posted it to the list.

wget http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/debian-user-200312/msg05420.html

I have not been following your thread carefully, but I suspect that
you are not going about this the best way. You may do better to simply
read the Debian installation manual _very_ carefully and then follow
it very carefully. If/when you come against a problem you can't
resolve send a very specific message to the list which contains the
following:

1. Brief description of the exact problem.
2. Explicit description of what you have tried.
3. Exact (relevant) error messages etc.

Cheers,

Nick.

Firebird+Flash+Esound - Arrrg!

2003-12-16 Thread Patrick Beard
Hi,
First, I'm running Debian Sarge with a custom 2.60-test9 kernel.
I'm having real problems getting Firebird+Flash to work with esound. I use
ICEWM and was happily using no sound server as I have no need for bell and
whistles on events, and call me primitive, but I can only listen to one song
or sound track at a time. However, while browsing the web the other day I
noticed that if the page is flash based and has sound, then any media
contained on the site plays with no sound. The site I noticed this on is
http://www.fromhellmovie.com There is a 'location walk through' clip that
mplayer-plugin loads and plays, but there is no sound. I presume any of the
recent movie sites are the same.
Anyway, I installed esound and configured xmms and mplayer to use it - all
seemed happy. I then tried firebird - no joy. I then installed
esound-clients, and tried 'esddsp mozilla' from xterm this time the above
site showed the flash loader and when this completed firebird appeared to
hang. As a last resort I installed 'mozilla-browser' and tried esddsp again.
Mozilla-browser showed the same symptoms. After loads of googling I've come
to a halt on this one. Lots of posts on this, but the majority seem to
suggest that esddsp should work. My sound is onboard and uses ES1371 module.

So I would appreciate if anyone can offer help on this one.

Use dpkg-scanpackages to update the Packages file (and remember to gzip
it, so you've got Packages.gz).

For individual packages, probably at some point, but I'm not sure about
soon. Note that we *do* have a GPG signature trail back to Release.gpg
which is sufficient for you to verify the packages in the main archive.
See the Securing Debian Manual for more information.

squid и авторизация в виндовом домене

2003-12-16 Thread spied

www.samba.org и из debian/testing - нигде нет ntlm_auth

попробовал использовать ntlm_auth из пакета squid - с ним есть
пара проблем:
 - иногда все-таки ie запрашивает пароль.
пробовал крутить числа в настройках, не помогает. сейчас стоят
такие значения:
auth_param ntlm program /usr/lib/squid/ntlm_auth dionis/master
auth_param ntlm children 10
auth_param ntlm max_challenge_reuses 10
auth_param ntlm max_challenge_lifetime 10 minutes

секунды) и access.log забивается кучей TCP_DENIED/407. короче как-то
более радужно виделся переход на ntlm-авторизацию в прокси.

When you say "update" the Packages, are you implying that you can do an
incremental update of an existing Packages file?

I use the command:
#dpkg-scanpackages latest /dev/null > $sub/Packages

and every invocation takes the same amount of time, it's quite a lengthy
process, even though the archive is but little changed -- it doesn't
"reuse" what it can.

I found Debian is more difficult to maintain than RedHat Linux.

I was running RedHat Linux. The last one was 6.2. on an Intel machine.
And I installed Debian first time at the spring/summer of this year.

The Debian install was rather easy here, i.e. on a powerpc architecture.
Problems come when I have to tweak the installed system according to my
needs.

Debian is a bit like these marts where one can buy, for example, some
furniture that you'll have to assemble at home: All you get is the
planks, the nails and, if you're lucky, an understandable manual that
tells you *how* to assemble it.
And the assembling part *can* become a hard piece of work ... :)

On the other hand with Debian on the machine I quickly learned how to
compile my own kernel, which wasn't very difficult, but *definitely*
very time consuming.

I find it difficult to tell what distro is "better" for beginners than
others.

Did you have a look a Lindows?

It seems to be Debian based:

Here is an article on it:

I'd be careful with Redhat these days: If I understand correctly,
they'll stop providing updates for their current RedHat 9 version next
year:

"Red Hat Linux maintenance and errata support is ending April 30, 2004."

Some notes of mine regarding Debian, on the debian-powerpc list some
time ago:

Hoping this helps.

Best Regards,
Wolfgang

I suspect my requirements are slightly different to yours. About five sites
are 'root' sites. That is, sites developed by company staff. The rest (and there's
more than a few) are generic websites that we host for various people, varying
from simple .html and jpeg types in ~/public_html/ to php/mysql wonders with
proper domains. The only other things that appear in home directories are the mbox
files
for the IMAP servers (something I wish I'd actually thought about). Most people have
shell access, but few use it.

Given your development method, I see nothing wrong with the way you intend to do.

Your partition seems fine, although it's probably not worth having such a large /
partition
if you are going to separate out /usr/. Without /var, /usr, /home, and /tmp, the
entire / partition
will probably weigh in at less than 40 MB, unless you have some truly large files in
/etc/.

Edward

fvwm 2.5.8 as Debian package

2003-12-16 Thread Lukas Ruf
Dear all,

until recently, I have been using
 for debianing the latest fvwm
packages. However, since the Debian machines were compromised, I
cannot access this directory anymore.

For this reason, I would like to ask you whether there is another
location around where I can find the respective packages.

Thanks in advance!

Please post your notes to this list when you are done if you don't mind as
I have been wanting to do this for a while.

Where are you going to get your backport? (if you will be backporting)
I don't see exim listed here:
http://www.backports.org/debian/dists/stable/

Is there an official backport?

Mutt is an excellent choice for doing the conversion.

Make sure your .muttrc has Maildir as its mbox_type:

set mbox_type=Maildir

Use mutt to open up the particular mbox.

type "T" then type "." which will tag all the messages.

Type ";s" and mutt will ask you where you want to
move all the messages and it will create a NEW Maildir for you.

(the semi-colon is important...took me a while to figure
that out and if you don't use it, it will only save one message)

You state you want to keep the existing mail so use ";C".
This will copy all the messages to the new location...not move them.

Courier-IMAP does not require your messages to be in
/var/spool/mail/$user. I have Courier-IMAP set up with SquirrelMail
that reads all of my mail which is in /home/andy/Maildir.
unless I don't understand your question correctly.

You may need to tweak the exim.conf to deliver your mail to the
Maildir using the "local_delivery:" section to deliver to
"directory = ${home}/Maildir/" and you may need to learn exim
filters which I love and are easy to learn.

Hope your conversion goes well.

Andy

Trustworthiness of unaccounted Debian packages

2003-12-16 Thread Lukas Ruf
Dear all,

what is the trustworthiness generally expected from packages that are
not in the main-line of the Debian distribution?

For example, packages that I find on and packages
found elsewhere? While the former is not fully clear to me, the later
is obvious: there cannot be a real trust --- or am I mistaken with
that?

Thanks for any enlightenment!

Nautilus won't die

2003-12-16 Thread Leandro Guimarães Faria Corcete Dutra
I have a really weird situation here...

I have a Debian GNU/Linux i386 testing host with some ten terminals
attached, running a Debian mini-distro derived originally from LTSP.
They are running Gnome 2.4, but this problem exists since Gnome 2.2.

Nautilus will freeze on all terminals at the same time, and refuse to
display icons, open windows or refresh already open windows. It's
impossible also to quit the Gnome session, but most other buttons are
working, so one can open apps and use them to open files anyway.

There are some other problems with xscreensaver dying constantly and
Evolution not being able to attach files, but I don't think they are
related.

The weirder of all is that I can't kill Nautilus after it freezes.
There are some defunct processes, but be it a killall -KILL or a kill
-KILL no process dies, and I'm forced to reboot the server.

Any ideas? My hacker colleague seems to think it is a kernel problem,
so we will eventually install 2.4.23, but I fear it could be some Gnome
or Glibc thing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It will be an issue of personal trustworthiness. These are Debian
developers, but the quality level they release packages at
extra-officially may vary widely.

What did the line look like? And did you re-run lilo?

Are member of the cdrom group? If not, add yourself to that group, log
out and in again. Also, make sure the ide-scsi module is loaded:

modprobe ide-scsi

Now use cdrecord -scanbus

to see if your drive is listed.

Add ide-scsi to /etc/modules to load it automatically at boottime.

There is the main repository and its many mirrors (look in
www.debian.org under the packages entry there should be a link to a
mirror list, although there are more out there).

There are also a lot of unofficial repositories for different purposes
(more relaxed attitude to no GPL licences, special ports of programs,
experimental/not in debian versions of programs, etc.) You usually find
these when you run into programs you don't find in debian proper and
google to see if debs are available somewhere. Also follow the lists,
references to come up occasionally in response to newer/not available
version inquiries.

Seems your system is an Athlon or Duron, so the following kernels will
work:

bf2.4
386
586
k6
k7

I would use the k7-Kernel, that one was compiled for your system. The
other ones work because your processor is downward compatible to them.

Port forwarding with ipmasq

2003-12-16 Thread Brendan Bache
Hi,

I'm running debian woody on my gateway with the ipmasq package installed
and I need to do some port forwarding. For instance, I need to forward
some ports for BitTorrent running on a box on my LAN so I created a file
/etc/ipmasq/rules/F10bt.rul

---F10bt.rul---
ipnm_cache ppp0
btPorts="6881 6882"

for port in $btPorts;
do
$IPTABLES -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $IPOFIF/$NMOFIF --dport $port
-j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.0.2:$port
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -p tcp -d $IPOFIF/$NMOFIF --dport $port -m
state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
done
---/F10bt.rul---

Where ppp0 is my external interface and 10.0.0.2 is the box on the LAN
that is running the BitTorrent client. From the gateway I can connect to
10.0.0.2 on port 6881. However if I try using the IP of my external
interface then I get connection refused. What's wrong with my rules? I
haven't changed anything about the default ipmasq setup other than
adding that .rul file and masquerading is working fine, it's just port
forwarding that is having problems. Using iptables -L and iptables -t
nat -L I can see that these rules are being added to their respective
chains without issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You might like to look into apt-ftparchive, which was written because
dpkg-scanpackages was getting too slow for the needs of the Debian
archive. However, I haven't used it myself so I'm hesitant to recommend
it straight off because I don't know how hard it is to set up. (It might
be quite easy, which would be nice ...)

It should be vmlinuz-2.4.18-bf2.4. If it is, you can create a new
boot floppy using that kernel. You can also choose only to install
the boot loader on the floppy disk, but use the kernel from the hard
disk, by telling lilo to use /dev/fd0 as the boot device. Or you
install the bootloader in your MBR and don't use the floppy at all.

All of the files in /boot are 2.2.20 version, so none of the bf24
kernel was installed.
What are some of the gotchas that could be causing it to ignore the
bf24 input to boot:?

Honestly, I don't know. But you still can install a 2.4 Kernel on your
system without reinstalling. Make sure security.debian.org is in your
sources.list, and run
apt-get istall kernel-image-2.4.18-bf2.4
to install the 2.4 installation kernel
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686
to install the image for pentium II and later systems. There are also
images for 386, 586, k6 and k7 systems. If you don't use the bf kernel,
make sure you tell lilo to use the initrd for the kernel you installed.
Your current kernel will not be removed and can be loaded by selecting
"LinuxOld" from within the lilo startscreen. You maybe want to
uncomment the "#promt" line in your lilo.conf as well.

Thanks for the help. I will try your suggestions. I am just trying to
understand what is going on. While somewhat frustrating, the process is
also very educational.
Right now I am booting from floppy because I don't want to screw up my
legacy system [OS/2 4.52 which uses a Boot Manager and LVM. I think it
can be sensitive to changes in boot stuff] until I have the Debian
system working to some minimal level of completeness.

Please don't do that. Better to learn the propper way to run X as
another user by using xauth. Xauth allows you to import the magic cookie
of another user, so you can authenticate yourself to X like this:

$ su -
# export DISPLAY=:0.0; xauth merge ~/.Xauthority
# xfontsel &

xhost won't discriminate users, only hosts, which could be a security
problem on a multi-user system.

Fill in the propper username and display and your good to go.

XP-LINUX Dual Boot

2003-12-16 Thread Abhay Watwe
Hi:

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 which came preloaded with XP on the first hard
drive. I added a second hard drive and installed Debian Woody on it. I
installed LILO with MBR on /dev/hdb1 which is my / partition. The machine
does not have a floppy drive, so I rebooted and used the Debian CD to boot
into linux in rescue mode. Then I used the following command to create a
linux.bin file

dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/linux.bin bs=512 count=1

I copied linux.bin to /dev/hdb4 which is my vfat partition. I rebooted the
machine and logged in as root into XP. I copied the file linux.bin to C:
and added the following entry to boot.ini

C:\linux.bin="Debian Linux"

I rebooted again and selected "Debian Linux" from the menu. I got a bunch
of 0s and 7s filling up my whole screen but it never booted into linux.

Any help with dual booting XP and Linux with XP boot loader will be much
appreciated.

Thanks

Abhay

To verify, as root, do a:

find / -name ifconfig

and see if there are more than one copy on your system.

No, you need it. I would compile iptables and associated sub-options as
modules, rather than straight into the kernel. That was you don't need
to recompile if you decide to use different iptables features.

And use this to generate your script. http://morizot.net/firewall/gen/
It's the way forward.

After running
# chattr + /etc/resolv.conf
then
# chattr - /etc/resolv.conf

Now /etc/resolv.conf can be edited.

I ran 'pppoeconfig' again selecting not starting 'pppoe' at boot.

# pon dsl-provider

ifconfig showing ISP connected but the Debian box was still cut off
from Internet.

I took another spare hard drive and performed another installing Debian
test on another PC. This time I used net-installer, sarge CD.
Everything went through smoothly. However he same problem still
occurred, ISP connected but cut off from Internet. Therefore I could
not download packages from Debain website or its mirror sites to
complete the installation.

I am a little bid disappointed. I could not discover where the Debian
box are blocked from connecting to Internet.

Well, the answers are already given, but what I do is use mc first of
all in a vc:
1. switch to a vc with Ctrl-Alt-Fx
2. mc
3. use mc with file->mkdir and create a new directory
4. I don't thing you have to do the sudo mount, I think I do just mount

5. then just use mc to copy whatever you want to that new dir.

It depends on your exact needs. Assuming you have no normal
interactive users, I'd probably set it up as

  /var/www -- "big enough", maybe 10-15 GB
/var/lib/postgres (or whever) -- "big enough", maybe 10-15 GB
  swap -- 0.5-1 GB
  / -- Whatever's left

On this sort of system, the main benefits you get from partitioning
are fault isolation: if something gets confused on your root
filesystem, and fsck can't recover it, you haven't lost your data.
Alternatively, if you decide to reinstall the system, this
partitioning scheme lets you reinstall software but keep data. If you
have a substantial amount of built-from-source software, you might
also consider a partition for /usr/local for similar reasons.

Adding more partitions, in my experience, doesn't make the system more
manageable; a common thing to happen is to install the system with a
small /var partition and then later realize that using APT is painful
because it wants lots of space in /var/cache/apt. Or you make /usr
too small, or /tmp too small, and run into problems later on.

That's an Athlon chip, right? Probably 2.4.18-1-k7 is the "best"
pick, since it also includes a patch for the recent local-root exploit
that affected Debian, and it's the closest match for your processor.

Package: mc
Description: Midnight Commander - a powerful file manager
GNU Midnight Commander is a text-mode full-screen file manager. It
uses a two panel interface and a subshell for command execution. It
includes an internal editor with syntax highlighting and an internal
viewer with support for binary files. Also included is Virtual
Filesystem (VFS), that allows files on remote systems (e.g. FTP
servers) and files inside archives to be manipulated like real files.

Knoppix starts up with the hard disk(s) mounted read only. To save a
file to hard disk, you must choose a partition which you are willing
to switch to read/write. Then, find the item in one of the Knoppix
menus that does the switch for you. Alternatively, you can use one of
the several suggestions already made to switch to read/write using
commands at a console prompt. This will surely involve running as
root. To become root on a console in Knoppix, find the menu item, root
console, or something like that. You do not need to know a root
password.

Groundhog day (was Galeon 1.3.10 on sid (ppc)

2003-12-16 Thread Clive Menzies
Hi

Sorry to re-post but I'm really stuck (I've been reduced to reinstalling
woody on another partition, just to be able to function).

To recap, using aptitude, I installed Galeon 1.3.10 (which seems to run
although there were some errors reported on installation). My problems
started when I tried to remove it because of the errors reported. If I
try to hold it, aptitude tries to reinstall it. If I try to remove it,
it reports that it is so broken that it needs to be reinstalled before I
can remove it. And if I try to reinstall it (it is flagged for upgrade)
I get:

Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database ...
dpkg: serious warning: files list file for package `galeon' missing,
assuming package has no files currently installed.
82818 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace galeon 1.3.10-3 (using
.../galeon_1.3.10-3_powerpc.deb) ...Unpacking replacement galeon ...
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault.
Ack! Something bad happened while installing packages. Trying to
recover:
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Press return to continue.

Frightening what ? ;) I tried manually removing the Galeon files but that
didn't get me far either.

I upgraded to sid with some trepidation, given my relative inexperience
with Linux and Debian (I've only tried Debian) but I was beginning to
find woody a bit limiting. Am I out of my depth here? "Oh yes he is",
they cried ;)

If someone could advise me how to expunge Galeon, I may be able to make
progress ;)

Thanks

Clive

This is nearly always a protocol problem. The answer depends on if
you're running gpm or not; I'll assume you're not.

Run

 dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

No, it's the percent signs, which are special in crontabs. See 'man 5

Try this instead:

You probably need to set the 'from' variable in ~/.muttrc to your full

Don't know what cpu that is but for amd you would want the k6 kernels
for duron and k7 for athelon

Sounds more like a problem with gpm to me. Try 'killall gpm' as root.

As I already wrote, you can install lilo on floppy, but use the kernel
from the hard disk It is installed in /boot anyway. This way, your boot
loader for OS/2 and other OS partitions will not be touched. This way,
booting will also be much faster.

Try

lilo -b /dev/fd0

That is strange. What kernel do you use? What does uname -r say?

hardware raid and 3ware

2003-12-16 Thread Debian User
I am interested in implementing hardware RAID on a new machine I
am putting together. I have read a post _Hardware RAID setup_ and
am glad that it can be done w/ modules in Debian. It looks liek 3ware
is the way to go. I only _need_ two disks (I think). Does anyone
have a suggestion as to card/driver selection?

Sorry the answer to the second part of the question should have been

update-rc.d -f xdm remove

Thanks for this useful link. Meanwhile I'v managed to get iptables
running. I was using a kernel generated by a patched 2.4.22. I tried a
vanilla 2.4.23 and it worked fine.

Ctrl Alt Backspace just takes me to a login screen for GNOME does not
take me out all the way to a shell (dos prompt)

| Ctrl Alt Backspace just takes me to a login screen for GNOME

Right. Ctl-Alt-Backspace kills the X server, then the display manager
(gdm) spawns a new one.

| does not take me out all the way to a shell

It will if you started X via 'startx'. If you have a display manager
installed and running, then you will see the results above.

Press Ctl-Alt-F[123456] to go to one of the 6 virtual consoles that
are initialized at boot time. Then press Ctl-Alt-F7 to go back to the
X display.

If you don't want X started at all on boot up, then remove the gdm (or
xdm, wdm, or kdm) package.

| (dos prompt)

No (MS-)DOS on Unix! :-)
