I found Debian is more difficult to maintain than RedHat Linux. I was running RedHat Linux. The last one was 6.2. on an Intel machine. And I installed Debian first time at the spring/summer of this year. The Debian install was rather easy here, i.e. on a powerpc architecture. Problems come when I have to tweak the installed system according to my needs. Debian is a bit like these marts where one can buy, for example, some furniture that you'll have to assemble at home: All you get is the planks, the nails and, if you're lucky, an understandable manual that tells you *how* to assemble it. And the assembling part *can* become a hard piece of work ... :) On the other hand with Debian on the machine I quickly learned how to compile my own kernel, which wasn't very difficult, but *definitely* very time consuming. I find it difficult to tell what distro is "better" for beginners than others. Did you have a look a Lindows? <www.lindows.com> It seems to be Debian based: <http://help.lindows.com/cgi-bin/lindows.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=UJ5_PY-g&p_lva=283&p_faqid=262> Here is an article on it: <http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10639> I'd be careful with Redhat these days: If I understand correctly, they'll stop providing updates for their current RedHat 9 version next year: <http://www.redhat.com/solutions/migration/rhl/> "Red Hat Linux maintenance and errata support is ending April 30, 2004." Some notes of mine regarding Debian, on the debian-powerpc list some time ago: <http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2003/debian-powerpc-200310/msg00854.html> Hoping this helps.
