Careful mixing 's' and 'S'; this is a case-sensitive filesystem! I
believe the filenames grub uses are all lowercase. I guess that error
message above was something you wrote down and typed into the email,
since it's difficult to copy and paste from your boot loader =). But
make sure that grub indicates that it's looking for stage1 (lowercase)
and that the file you have is also called stage1 (lowercase).

Make sure that you do not mix up the modules from the pcmcia-cs project
(built from pcmcia-cs source) and those from kernel, since they are
mostly not compatible. Try this to locate modules looking for trouble:

cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`/pcmcia
for x in *.o ; do
find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel | grep "$x$"
done

I have a problem with this list

2003-06-27 Thread Paul E Condon
I think that it used to be that when I posted to this
list, my message would be returned to me from the server at
the time that it was sent out to everyone else on the list.
Now that is not happening. Now, when I post, I see nothing
on the list, but my message is showing up in the archives.
Which is the correct behavior of the list?

I would like to see my message show up. The message in my
inbox is a nice anchor for collecting replies. But if policy
is to not echo the message, what is recommended as a way to
collect in one place the replies to a request for advice?

Sorry for the several test messages. I had a question about
exim that I posted, and from my vantage point, it never
showed up on the list (and I never got replies). I thought
maybe I had messed up my email config while poking at the
exim issue. Now I know that I'm simply not getting an echo
of my message, but why?

TIA

under the config tab, on the rip tab, look at the "Generic SCSI device"
option. put something like /dev/sg0.

i dont know the reason for this, but it works.

you may need to compile the kernel or modules for "scsi generic"
devices. but i am guessing youve already done that.

Have you added root to the passdb.tdb file yet?  (smbpasswd -a root)  This is necessary to be able to authenticate as root.  You may need to change the root password (smbpasswd root) to match the real root password and you may need to enable root (smbpasswd -e root).

I wish I could help you more, but all the Samba experience I have is from reading about it, I'm still saving money to build my Debian machine! :)

A good way to do this, in a LAN environment, is to configure one machine
as a font server. Then you can have all of the other machines use it,
and only have to maintain fonts in one place and still get all of the
fonts everywhere.

ADI Soundmax 1881 (intel chipset) w/ ALSA Drivers

2003-06-27 Thread Michael Kahle
Greetings fellow Debianites,

Sorry, this may be a little long winded. For the past couple of days I have
been trying off and on to get the ALSA drivers setup on my Woody box.

The computer is a IBM Intellistation Z-Pro (6866-60U). Because I never had
sound installed on this machine, I never had the SOUNDCORE module loaded as
part of my kernel. When I started this venture I was using a custom kernel
that I made to support my 5 disk SCSI RAID5 LVM disk setup. So I built a
new kernel that had SOUNDCORE support in addition to my other needs.
I have the 2.4.18 debian package source for woody.
Ran:
make mrproper
make xconfig
make-kpkg kernel-image

When I built the kernel "the Debian way", for some reason my network card
(eepro100) could never get an IP address. So, I built the kernel "the
manual way".
Ran:
make mrproper
make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

This worked wonderfully and I didn't have to figure out what was going on
with make-kpkg. So now I have a custom 2.4.18 kernel with SCSI+RAID5+LVM
and now soundcore support as a module.

When I installed the Debian packages for ALSA using dselect, I could not get
it to configure properly with my sound card. I then went to alsa's site
(http://www.alsa-project.org) and followed their directions to install the
latest stable release 0.94 of the Driver, Library, Utilities, and Tools.
I now can see that these modules are loaded... lsmod shows:

Module Size Used byTainted: PF
snd-seq-oss23104 0 (unused)
snd-seq-midi-event 2984 0 [snd-seq-oss]
snd-seq36236 2 [snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event]
snd-pcm-oss36516 0
snd-mixer-oss 11232 0 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-intel8x0 15168 0
snd-pcm54624 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-intel8x0]
snd-timer 13920 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm]
snd-page-alloc 4496 0 [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 32816 0 [snd-intel8x0]
snd-mpu401-uart 2848 0 [snd-intel8x0]
snd-rawmidi12384 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]

snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore 3492 5 [snd]

I launch alsamixer and it shows my sound card information at the top. So,
it seems that everything is installed correctly and working. I then
installed XMMS using dselect from the stable tree. This prompted me to
install all sorts of stuff. Libasound1, libesd-alsa0, xmms, esound, some
documentiation.

Now when I launch XMMS as a user, trying to play a mp3 brings up the
message:
Please check that:
1. You have the correct output plug-in selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly

Now when I run XMMS as root, it works just fine, plays my music just fine.

Is this a permissions issue with the sound card device(s)? If so, what is
the best (read most secure) way to enable access for my user account?

Any ideas why make-kpkg kernel-image does not work correctly with my
Ethernet card? (I realize this is a different post entirely, just thought I
would bring it up.)

Any help is always appreciated.

Michael

I still didn't try it, but I've read on several places about the wondershaper,
if traffic shaping is what you want (ie, control as in 'command', not as in
'observe').

If you only want to control (as in 'observe') your traffic, you can use SNMP
with MRTG to generate nice graphs of the data passing through your network card
(again, I haven't done that yet).

Hope that helps.

Well, you can compare to mine:

wingnut:~# type tcpdump
tcpdump is /usr/sbin/tcpdump
wingnut:~# ldd /usr/sbin/tcpdump
libpcap.so.0.7 => /usr/lib/libpcap.so.0.7 (0x40019000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40036000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000)
wingnut:~# dpkg -l tcpdump | grep ^ii
ii tcpdump3.7.2-1A powerful tool for network monitoring and d
wingnut:~# md5sum /usr/sbin/tcpdump
0c558a84f5eba114dd31878fd4fd3e18 /usr/sbin/tcpdump

Did you ever have libaviplaydha-0.7.so.0 installed? Maybe if it was
removed "uncleanly" you just need to run ldconfig? That's just a guess,
though, and I don't think that's it. I'm leaning more towards your
tcpdump having been replaced with something else... =/

go to the config tab in grip and choose a ripper. The same with the Encode tab where
you have to choose an encoder. For example, lame for mp3 or oggenc for .ogg
check you have installed the ripper (cdda2wav, cdparanoia) and encoder (oggenc or
lame) you have selected.

I don't know much about CD ripping, but I do know that if you use ide-scsi
your devices should be linked like this:

$ ll /dev/cdrom*
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root   11 Jun 26 00:07 /dev/cdrom ->

If, for some reason, they are not linked like that you get errors or odd
behavior.

I can verify that this is not a unique problem to you. I wrestled with
it for awhile. To the best of my memory, I never found a real
solution. (For a number of reasons, I switched to Mandrake for my
desktop system and the problem doesn't occur there. I'm not
recommending that you switch, just comfirming that it is a bug.)

I'm not sure what tools there are for investigating MBR settings or drive
geometry.
Meanwhile, boot floppies work (though the Debian one is awfully slow ;)
cr
quote from original post

[The details - I installed GRUB in accordance with
/usr/share/doc/grub/README.Debian -

2. Ran update-grub

cr, it looks like /boot is available from both /etc/fstab and from your df
listing. I am assuming that you ran 'update-grub' first to produce menu.lst,
but even if you hadn't done that, by now you have rerun grub-install enough.

I notice that 1. has --root-directory=boot. That should be
--root-directory=/boot according to the README.Debian file.

The other thing to check is in your menu.lst
It says:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.2.20-idepci root=/dev/hda1 ro

Is that where that kernel is or is it /boot/vmlinuz-2... ?

I think that /vmlinuz is a symlink to /boot/vmlinuz-2...; so /vmlinuz might
work, but I don't think what you have will work unless that is actually what
is in / .

Unfortunately my /boot is on my root partition here where I just tried this
myself. If you think that your MBR settings, whatever those are, might be
messed up, you could try installing grub on a floppy. I just did that on my
system.

First I ran update-grub after installing grub on the system. I edited
/boot/grub/menu.lst which had root(hd0,0) to make it (hd0,2) since it is on
/dev/hda3. The rest of it seemed fine.

Then I ran 'grub-install /dev/fd0' with a floppy in the drive. So you would
do 'grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/fd0' I think.

setterm -msglevel x produces an error ("klogctl error: Unknown error ...") when
I execute it as a regular user, but it seems to work when I run it as root.

I looked for, but could not find, a way to determine my current/default settings
for the setterm variables (esp. -msg and -msglevel).

Finally, is the help in error for setterm msglevel? It says that -msglevel 0 turns
on all logging (which sounds right) and 8 "will print all kernel messages" (which
sounds
the same as the description of 0, and wrong).

kernelling the debian way

2003-06-27 Thread Emma Jane Hogbin
Question about make-kpkg ... when create a new kernel image for an ACPI
patched kernel the .config file gets overwritten and there are changes in
the values of the .config file. Another person has reported that it
doesn't happen when they use the non-Debian way. Is the patch dictating
what happens to the config file? or is it something else?

For me the ACPI module lines are changed from M to Yes. For the other
person, working on a different kernel and with a different patch, it seems
as the some of the lines are actually deleted from the .config file...

Chances are that you don't have the apm module loaded, as root:

   modprobe apm

Then try a power off, if that corrects it, add apm to /etc/modules.

You probably want

:syntax on

You could uncomment the "syntax on" line in /etc/vim/vimrc if you want
to enable the change system-wide. Other ones I like to uncomment there
to facilitate coding in vim are showmatch, showcmd, incsearch, ruler.
You might want number, and (if the way it happens automatically isn't to
your liking) autoindent and/or cindent. See the online help (hit F1) --
it's very, very good.

Syslog MARKs every 20 minutes (by default). These MARKs give you an
easy visual cue that (a) it's still running, and (b) how often messages
are coming in. When you're scanning through the logs, it's an easy way
to tell when events are clumped together, or how far apart, without
having to look over and find the timestamp.

You can change the frequency of the MARKs by specifying an '-m' option
to the syslogd invocation in /etc/init.d/sysklogd . Find a line that
says SYSLOGD="" and change it to SYSLOGD="-m 60", for example, to make
it mark every hour instead of 3 times an hour. You can disable the
MARKs altogether by specifying SYSLOGD="-m 0".

good times,

For your second problem, edit /etc/init.d/sysklogd and on about line 14
there should be a line which looks like:

SYSLOGD=" "

change to

SYSLOGD=" -m 0"

That will disable "mark" for ya. Its a timestamp in case your system
crashes you will know what time it crashed.

You'll want to get into vim and type-

:syntax enable

Put it in your ~/.vimrc and it'll come on each time. Also consider this-

:help syntax

Or even just-

:help

If all else fails, [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the user mailing list for vim, and there is

You can install it, but that doesn't mean that it will work with
mozilla, the debs were not compiled with gcc-3.2. Try removing the
JRE that you installed, and install this:

(sorry about the long line). It should work with copies of mozilla that

I'm just guessing, but usually when something like this happens to me
it's because of permissions on the devices. Try doing it as root, if it
works then either change the permissions on /dev/scd0 or add yourself to
whatever group owns it.

Just to avoid confusion, I'll reiterate what you have already so clearly
pointed out earlier in this thread. The above messages indicte that
grub is looking for (hd0,0)/boot/grub/Stage1 (which Linux calls
/boot/boot/grub/Stage1) and then, when that's not found,
(hd0,0)/grub/Stage1 (which Linux calls /boot/grub/Stage1). Okay, so
maybe I increased the confusion!

For some reason, update-texmf didn't do anything *but*, thanks to your
help, it did render the document quite well. Here is a summary of what
I did (as root):

1) I edited /etc/texmf/texmf.d/96passivetex.cnf and modified the
   pool_size.pdfxmltex variable as prescribed:

% TeX uses % for comments. The next line is in the
 % original:
 % pool_size.pdfxmltex = 60
 pool_size.pdfxmltex = 250

2) /usr/bin/fmtutil --all

And voila!

Thank you,

If you haven't already, try verifying that /dev/psaux does in fact
exist. If not, it will have to be created. Also, check to see if gpm is
installed. gpm gives you mouse control of the cursor wihin a console, and
can cause problems under X.

Assuming you don't have gpm installed (which is the console mouse

locale not supported by C library

2003-06-27 Thread Peter Hugosson-Miller
Since I upgraded from potato to woody, I've started getting _lots_ of
these warnings in my ~/.gnome-errors file:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

OK, it's just a warning, but it's new, and I just wonder

 a) If I need to fix it to avoid _real_ problems later
 b) If so, how do I fix it?
I wasn't aware that I changed anything locale-specific during the
upgrade, apart from the recommended 'apt-get install locales
util-linux', but I'm fairly sure I just accepted the defaults
everywhere, so that shouldn't have broken anything.

New To Debian

Hello all. I'm fairly new to debian, and mostly new to linux. I've got two major
problems.
I'm running debian 3.0r1on a Compaq computer: EVO D3 1.8ghz computer.

The video card is an Intel 845-G chipset graphics driver,
and the network card is an Intel Pro 100 Desktop Adapter

My first problem, is that I don't know how to install the NIC.
My second problem is that I can't find a driver that will let me run X with the 845-g
I can throw an S3 in the computer and run X all day, but I can't get it to work with
the
Intel graphics card...

Any ideas?

Try:
modprobe apm

as root. If it works just add:
apm

A4 paper size not available for printer

2003-06-27 Thread Mark C
Hi,

I done a upgrade to sarge, and so far its been great, I have now just
come to setup my printer and discovered that there is no 'A4' size
listed to use.

During the install I can remember something regarding the printer paper
size, which I set to A4, but this must of got messed up during the
upgrade.

I'm currently printing use the 'letter' size, but this cuts alot of text
out and messes the page up.

Can anyone advise me how I would get this option back, or be able to add
it.

Cheers

How to dpkg -i on broken system

2003-06-27 Thread Ross Boylan
My system got in a broken state in which it could not mount some
disks. I had patched the evms libraries to correct a problem, and
then overwrote them with an updated Debian package (which
unfortunately lacked the patch).

I wanted to dpkg -i my_old.deb (that will work, even for a downgrade,
won't it?), but dpkg said
dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: No such file or directory

The status area was on one of the evms disks.

I used dpkg-deb to unpack the .deb file and copied the single file I
needed over the newer one. Is there a better way to do this? Is
there any way to run dpkg -i when the directory it needs is gone?

Thanks.

To clarify: I mounted the red hat partitions under /red when running
Debian. My understanding is the lilo's map, and so it's boot process,
use absolute disk locations and so shouldn't care how I get to the
files. The lilo.conf under Debian refers to them like /red/boot/...

RedHat's fstab does refer to the partitions as /dev/sdaXX, and does
not use the /red root.

So I don't think the use of /red is the source of the problem. Of
course, at this point, everything is suspect. I have triple-checked
that I'm actually referring to the right partitions under Debian.

Hi Jesus,

This sounds like a good idea to me. I'd like to see my quick and dirty
hack made into a clean and pretty tool combined with your work.

create_package.xml.php relies upon phpDocumentor's Io class, so perhaps
the nice features of Io could be incorporated into one of the File_*
packages

Actually, I don't know.
I was in dselect and it didn't have any success in finding a package that
related directly to the JRE that was isntalled.

I thought that Debian could install Blackdown JRE as a .deb.

bring the existence of the poll to the attention of Debian folks here.

The poll is here:

It is probably a permissions problem. cdparanoia (and hence grip)
needs to access the SCSI generic interface for ripping. The device for
the generic interface is probably /dev/sg0 (depending on how many other
SCSI devices you have, if any).

I'll have to mostly pass on this one. I might be inclined to file a bug
(probably against xserver-xfree86) if there isn't one already mentioning
crashiness with your video card ...

You could try 'xset s activate' as a test of whether it's X's default
screensaver stuff kicking in. If so, 'xset s off' disables that. I'm not
sure whether this affects GNOME's screensaver, though.

syslogd does this; it's occasionally useful if a machine crashes and you
want some idea of when it happened. You can turn it off using the '-m 0'
option to syslogd, which you can put in the SYSLOGD="" line in
/etc/init.d/sysklogd.

It's not related to your first problem.

USB mouse problems

2003-06-27 Thread Andrej Prsa
Hi!

I have a tiny problem with my USB mouse; when the mouse is plugged in
during X startup, everything is working fine. But if I plug it off and
then plug it in again, it wouldn't work. Usually, in XF86config (and not
XF86config-4) it was just a matter of adding "AllowMouseOpenFail", but in
Debian I don't have XF86Config, so I don't know how to fix this. I have
hotplug installed and for all other USB devices it is working. In logs I
found that the hotplug system cannot find mousedev module (which in fact I
don't have), but since my mouse is otherwise working, I'm clueless what is
wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Andrej

You almost certainly don't want to use xhost. In theory, ssh should
do the right magic with xauth. Does 'ssh -v bdg2' say anything
informative? Do you have xbase-clients (or really, an xauth binary,
