Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I already had the aliases in my modules.conf (except I use sbawe). I tried setting the sound system to OSS, but still no signs of life. I have set folder=$HOME/Mail set spoolfile=~/Mail/inbox set mbox=+mbox in muttrc. I don't use procmail (yet), just a .forward file with the exim filter declaration at the top. New mail cheerfully appends to various files (not named in the .muttrc) according to if-then-elif lines in .forward. Here's a question: where is the .forward file syntax documented? The exim docs refer to "standard .forward file processing" but that's it. chmod quiestion
Hello list, Providing I have a directory /grpdir and chmod it to 775. If a user of that group creates a subdirectory under it, say /grpdir/subdir, the subdir will have 755 as it's default mode. Implications of using g++-3.0
If I use g++-3.0, do I need to build most of my own libraries? For example, I wanted to use libstrutilsxx, but it didn't work. I think I read (though I can't find it) that object files from different versions of the compiler can't be mixed. True? Since 2.95 is the default (i386 woody), all the debs are built with that, so they won't work with 3.0, right? (I'm hoping I'm wrong here!) I tried getting the source and compiling for the library, but it didn't work. This was puzzling; perhaps it uses some language feature that changed? The problem seemed to be with streams; I haven't had time to track it down. Anyway, if all this is true, maybe I should go back to 2.95. I understand it doesn't implement the standard fully, and I was hoping to avoid getting into that swamp. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, posting this under new Subject. Any ideas? What does exit code 242 say? All the best for the festive season Ian Ian Balchin Grahamstown, South Africa.
ppp daemon dies Newbie #61
Ben, As user I made myself member of groups dialout and dip some time back and this is therefore not the problem. Anita, I have the password in the file /etc/ppp/chap-secrets but in fact wvdial connects with my username and password as in wvdial.conf The file is user - rw for sure and I am trying to connect as root. John, Not using a networked computer so copying the plog output across was more than I could cope with lastnight, in any case see below. I did run pppconfig. I really wanted to use wvdial - not sure why, probably ease of configuration and anticipation of less problems All, I have decided to do a complete reinstall in the light of the following considerations. I have no data to lose I have make mistakes I am running in console mode only Email has been part of GNU/Debian for years The configuration of a single user on a standalone PC connecting to a dial-up ISP is surely one of the major standard uses of a Linux box The problems are therefore likely of my own making and not inherent in the system. I have probably tended to rush in where angels fear to tread. Finally, I have had my fill of going round and round looking at the same things with no improvement (well, did get wvdial to connect). If one of you were here it could probably be solved in no-time flat, but with my limited skills this is not going to happen. I do not have the experience or knowledge. So, my plan of action is as follows. 1. I will do a reinstall from the CD paying careful attention to any entries that I make. I must assume that the email system is unlikely to be up and running immediately after an install and that there will be various configuration matters to attend to. 2. I will then print out the relevant man pages and HOWTOS and do some serious study of this and relevasnt chapters in my GNU/DEBIAN BIBLE 3. I will then post a complete plan of action of exactly what I see needs to be done for any comment. Maybe I will do the reinstall tonight, but if not it may then have to wait until after the festive season (local summer holiday season here until 2nd week in Jan) as other matters are pressuring for my attention in the days and weeks ahead (i have to make a living). So, wishing you all the best for the festive season, whatever your faith, wherever you are, I will look to better success just now. Regards Ian Ian Balchin Grahamstown, South Africa.

Hello, You're needing to use umask The default mode for a fie or directory is set with umask, which uses the numeric system to define its value. To set the umask, you must first determine the value you want the file to have. For example, a common file permission set is 644, with which the owner has read and write permission and the rest of the world has read permission. After the value is determined, you subtract it from 777. Keeping the same example of 644, the value would be 133. This value is the umask value. Typically, this value is placed in a system file that is read when a user first logs on. After the value is set, all files created will set their permissions automatically, using this value. So, in your case... umask 002 - k l u r t

installing Woody on new box - best way to go about it?
Hi I'm looking forward to being able to play with the new box I am getting for Christmas. Its for a dedicated Debian installation and I'll be also running KDE on it. At the moment I have a P133 with is running Debian (Woody) upgraded from Potato with KDE pulled from Sid. Questions: I have a CD with Potato on it, given that I am on a single band ISDN dial-up here am I best to install Potato and upgrade or is there somewhere I can download a CD image of Woody? (If so I could get my other half to download that at work on their DSL) Is KDE 2.2 still only available in Sid? I have done this process before so I can get the packages from 2 places, however if it has made it into Woody then I needn't bother. TIA Rachel

I've got a few systems for trapping spam. A modified set of Lars Wirzenius's procmail filters ("spamfilter" in Debian), an asian-language trap, and a few scripts to help automate the response process. I'll post the whole mess at some point, but it's a bit unweildy (ugly, but it works ;-). I'm attaching one script I've been polishing over the past few days. It scans a message (or attachments) for URLs, gets the IP, then runs a WHOIS query, extracts email addresses, and converts them to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" form. abuse.net is a remailer run by John Levine, it sends mail to known (or guessed) abuse reporting addresses for sites, as well as sharing information with other services. Spamcomp.net is a similar service. Substitute as appropriate. My process in mutt is to pipe the message (or if it's encoded, an attachment) through my script, paste the addresses into the "To:" line, and send. Results from ISPs are moderately impressive. If nothing else, ISPs will find they're getting massive complaints to spam. The script isn't perfect. It doesn't handle some obfuscated URL (@-encoded, big-number URLs, though I'm working on it). Hi! Is the soundcore.o module also loaded? That's a module directly from the linux kernel (if you compile the kernel yourself: You have to switch general sound card support to "M" (modularized), but leave all other options off on the sound card support configuration page; if you don't compile it yourself: This module should be part of the kernel packages). Debian on Compaq ProLiant DL380
I have a Compaq DL380 with a Smart Array 5i controller. This machine doesn't seem to be happy with the "compact" boot disks. The thing boots up but doesn't "see" the disks. I have installed Debian on other Compaq machines before and have had to use the compact root and rescue boot disks. I don't see any error messages while booting, however I also don't see the "discovering" of the array. Am I missing something? boot command line for the kernel? or do I need to make a new custom kernel boot disk? Thanks, Loren
xmms hang - gtk related?
Hello all, I have been having a problem with xmms for the past two weeks or so, ever since an upgrade of it (tracking testing). If I minimize xmms, then maximize it later, the playlist has disappeared, and it shortly thereafter segfaults. Attached is an strace output - only the last 100 or so lines, when I start to see errors. It looks much like bug #121058, so it has been reported, and I figure there is not much to do on that front. This may also be strictly a Gnome problem, but I can't reproduce it in other apps, so I tend to think it's xmms's problem, or at least a problem in the way it expects to interact with Gnome. stable gcc for sid
Hi All, Im keen on getting a stable version of a c++ compiler for sid. the version I have says that it is a debian prerelease version and tends to show internal error when compiling an application. I've tried getting gcc from testing but that too seems to be a pre-release and the one froms stable seems to want to remove a buch of stuff I think I would like to keep. I also have gcc-3.0 installed - would simply removing this bring gcc back to a stable state ? I upgrade quite regularly - once every few days. Any thoughts / ideas. All Welcome. A few observations: If you've already created a maildir "foo/" but specify "foo" in your .procmailrc, procmail will deliver to mbox "foo". So don't forget that slash :) In my experience, if you are sorting mail into folders (or whatever you want to call them), it's not necessary to create the maildir at all; just tell procmail that you want all mail from the debian-xyzzy list in "debian-xyzzy", and procmail will create the maildir itself when the first message arrives. qmail absolutely demands that the maildir exist before delivering mail to it. This confused the heck out of me once when I thought qmail was using procmail as the MDA, but it really wasn't. You can't. `chmod g+s dirname` will set the sgid bit on the directory, causing all files created within it to be owned by the same group as the directory. You can't force the owning user. The permissions on created files is determined, as another poster has mentioned, by the user's umask. This is, however, a user-controlled setting. As the sysadmin, you don't have the ability to force a specific umask setting to be used on all files within a directory. The best you can do is add the line umask 002 to all relevant users' .bash_profile (note that Debian places `umask 022` in that file by default). This will cause everything a user creates (from within bash) to be group-writable, not just the single directory, but that should pose minimal problems on a Debian system, as Debian's default is to set up each user with their own private group; as long as you don't add anyone to these groups, user-writable and group-writable are equivalent unless the file is owned by a different group (as would be the case in a sgid directory). (I'm pretty sure that all of this is correct, but if I'm wrong, and there is a way to force this, I would be overjoyed to learn of it...) -- When we reduce our own liberties to stop terrorism, the terrorists have already won. - reverius Innocence is no protection when governments go bad. - Tom Swiss

Multiple workspaces with Sawfish and Gnome, session management and navigation
Hi. I'm running woody, with its attendand Gnome packages. I use the Sawfish window manager, with 9 workspaces, with columns and rows both set to 1, as per the workspaces configuration tab under sawfish in the gnome control center. This works fairly niceley, but there are two things I can't get quite right: 1) Session management 2) Keybindings to take me to each workspace directly. 1) The session management kinda works, but when I log in again, everything is always put on the first desktop. Also, sometimes it remembers the settings of my aterms, sometimes it don't... I remember long ago I was using icewm-gnome and gnome, and the sessionmanagement was better. I like sawfish though, and can't use icewm due to some obscure focus bugs it has in pointer focus mode. 2) I can find options in the sawfish bit of gnome control center to take me to the previous, and next, workspaces, and have bound them to keys. I can't, however, find anything to go directly to desktop x, so I can bind them to M-C-x. Help appreciated Thanks Neilen

xmame-gl slow, even with direct rendering working
Hi All! I recently (yesterday, in fact) got (finally) a vid card with some accellerated 3D support, nameley an ATI Rage 128GL, with 32MB RAM. I Managed to get DRI working without too much effort (mainly compiling the r128 and agpgart kernel modules). I know it is accelerated, since when I run gears without any DRI stuff, I get 100fps, and with accell about 300fps. Also, glaxium is completely unplayable without 3D accel, and with it, I get 30-40 fps. This is on a Duron 750 (kt133 chipset, RAM speed set to medium, cas3, video 1152x864 32bpp). Anyhow, I was hoping to use xmame-gl to get fast fullscreen support in X, but even running a game at 1:1 resolution, I get only about 5fps. Running the normal X version, and scaling it to double size, I easily get 60fps. Anyone have any ideas, or get it to perform better themselves? If so, what config do you have? Oh, one think that _might_ be significant, I am running mostly woody, with only the xmame comfing from sid. All the X/DRI/Mesa/whatever is from woody, kernel 2.4.13.
Sending faxes with efax as a normal user
Hi all. I noticed that I can not send faxes as a user. I assume its this way for a reason. So, how should efax be set up so as to allow normal users to send faxes, or is this not possible. Sending faxes as root works, but I don't like the idea. If there is no way to make efax do this, what other software are available? Thanks Neilen

Configuring dhcpd problem
Hi all ! I have a proxy and I want it to serve IP addresses to the internal network using dhcpd. /etc/dhcpd.conf describes the internal subnet only, which corresponds to the interface eth1. Looking in /var/log/daemon.log, dhcpd is complaining that there is no declaration for the subnet corresponding to interface eth0, which I don't want dhcpd to serve IP addresses to. I've been told to look in the script /etc/init.d/dhcp and add the interface I want dhcpd to listen to for IP requests, in my case eth1. Otherwise, it would try to listen on all interfaces, and then would fail since eth0 is not properly declared. But when I add eth1 like this: /usr/sbin/dhcpd -- -d eth1 the script fails at boottime and I need to restart from floppies to get back. From what I understand from man dhcpd, this should be a perfectly valid option. The booting process stops just after starting anacron, where it should start dhcpd. What is the problem now ?? Any ideas ?? What else can I do to track the problem ?? Thanks in advance, Daniel -- "There is no spoon..." - The Matrix

Converting policy.sgml to texinfo
Hello, (Apologies if I'm sending to the wrong list.) I'm trying to convert the policy.sgml.gz file in package debian-policy version 3.5.6.0 to texinfo and info formats with debiandoc2texinfo and makeinfo, from packages debiandoc-sgml version 1.1.49 and texinfo version 4.0b-2, respectively. debiandoc2texinfo reports no errors, and generates a file called policy.texinfo. At the makeinfo step, makeinfo reports approximately 35 times policy.texinfo:428: @asis expected `{...}'. and segfaults. The info document it generates contains menus and an empty section 1.1, but no further nodes (line 428 of policy.texinfo is in section 1.2). Trying to convert policy.texinfo to dvi generates an error at line 382, and the resultant postscript consists of only the first two pages of the policy file. (I don't know much about TeX, but mention this in case it helps debug the problem.) The exact commands I issued are appended at the end of this email. Can anybody help me to generate the info file, or point me to a working copy in texinfo format? Anyone using plip?
I've tried to get plip running, both in a monolithic kernel and as a module. No luck: dmesg reports "parport0 has no irq". In fact, parport0 is there and is detected and used by lp0. Not sure what to try next. The information in the PLIP howto seems to be somewhat out of date; is there anything more recent? I don't know if that's true for the libs you're using though. Re: nfs root mount problem
How did you make a boot floppy that initiates the process? I am just starting to try to make diskless systems (not to make thin clients, but to centralize software installation on a computational cluster) and am stuck. The etherboot tutorial says to cat floppyload.bin 3c905.lzrom > /dev/fd0 but the etherboot distribution doesn't contain any "floppyload.bin" (yes, I did make it) and the ROM images from http://www.rom-o-matic.net end in .lzdsk not .lzrom, which I'm not sure is the same. Is there a more up-to-date tutorial which does etherboot with boot floopies? On a related note, the 2.2.x kernels must be built with an "allow root to mount over nfs" option to get this to work, but this option appears to be gone from the 2.4.x kernels. Is it unnecessary, or just hiding?

Re: USB Mouse, GPM and Kernel 2.4
I was the one with the ES1371 problems, I tried to start from scratch by compiling 2.4.16 myself and now my soundcard works fine. Only difference seems to be that I now have an audio codec module loaded, didn't have that under 2.2.18. I don't have a /dev/input directory, am I missing a package? (devfs?) I haven't tried /dev/usbmouse under X but I will do. -D On Thu, 2001-12-20 at 00:06, Cameron Matheson wrote: > Hello > > On Thu, 2001-12-20 at 00:25, Didier Malenfant wrote: > > I'm switching to 2.4 to try and sort out some other problems (with > > sound). > > Have you tried Alsa (it's great). Pleez help with courier-POP !!!
Hey! I run an imapd but know I would love to run a popd too. So I did a apt-get install courier-pop ps -ax | grep pop3 now says: /usr/sbin/couriertcpd -pid=/var/run/courier/pop3d.pid -stderrlogger=/usr/sbi n/courierlogger -maxprocs=40 -maxperip=4 -nodnslookup -noidentlookup -addres s=0 110 /usr/lib/courier/courier/courierpop3login /usr/lib/courier/authlib/authdaemon /usr/lib/courier/courier/courierpop3d Maildir /usr/sbin/courierlogger courierpop3login great. I do telnet localhost 110, USER=martin, PASS, XXX, Connection lost. /var/log/syslog tells me that pop3d can not access the maildir because it can not find it. I do some rechere on the net, so I set a "." instead of the "Maildir" - then a connection is possible, but now mails are transfered. I did a makemail dir /raid/users/martin (my home) but he denies and says that it already exists The final question: - How do I know where the maildir is? - How do I tell pop3d to access it? I think the Maildir is directly in my home-directory (/raid/users/username/). Plz. help. Martin, Austria/Vienna
