Kinda - it depends on your clients more than anything. Samba 2.0.7 is the
latest official version, and can act as a domain controller to authenticate
and provide file and print sharing for win95/8 machines. It cannot act as
a PDC for a domain of NT workstations though.

Samba 2.1.x is *supposed* to have full PDC/BDC support for NT domains, but
its still work in progress,

I have a dozen win95b machines using an old pentium as a samba server -
rocks seriously hard considering the budget was $100 NZ, and that was spend
on the O'Reilly book "Samba". I thoroughly recommend it to you.

gnomeicu and remote gnome panel

2000-10-25 Thread Alexey Kakunin
Hi!
I have one, more theoretical question:
I have two machine: machine A with debian woody and Helix GNOME and machine B
with Mandrake 7.0/RE and also with GNOME 1.2 (original, not HELIX).
I have gnomeicu installed on machine A.
THen I login to machine A from machine B and try to run gnomeicu - it crashes,
because (as I understand) can not connect to gnome panel or, may be gnome
session by using CORBA. Yes, it is true, I haven't gnome session started on
machine A.
But I have gnome session and gnome panel started on machine B. As I know, it is
not matter for CORBA where is the server: on local machine or in the net.
So, how can I say to gnomeicu, started on machine A to use gnome panel (or
gnome session) on machine B?

PS Yes, I know, I can run gnomeicu with -a and it is works fine without any
gnome panel, but as I understand, theoretically it is possible to use remote
gnome panel, I want to know, is it possible on practise.

I have the same problem. I do not know what is exactly the reason for,
but I remember it worked some versions and on potato before.

I tried something on /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/host.conf but with no
effect.

There is no network traffic if I try to telnet or ssh with the host's
name. But "ping localhost" works!

I want to build a network of X-Terminals (Debian based of course).
Which hardware is best for this stuff (both server(1) and clients(5)) and is
there any Debianized way of creating terminals. I saw LTSP page and packages
but these are made for RH.
If someone can tell me the debians way of making X-terminals please mail me

2000-10-25 Thread Erik Steffl
  the message in subject:

Oct 25 00:08:06 jojda insmod: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent

odules/2.2.17/modules.dep

is somewhat troubling me, I have fairly plain debian unstable install,
why do I get the message?

I tried to figure out why is the /etc/modules.conf newer than
modules.dep but couldn't figure it out. both file are up to date (as far
as content goes).

  here are the dates:

Oct 24 23:55 /etc/modules.conf
Oct 24 17:05 /lib/modules/2.2.17/modules.dep

the date/time on modules.conf is always exactly the same as the
date/time of booting the system - that means that it's updated (or at
least touched) everytime system boots.

however, the modules.dep is only changed when it really should be
changed (I think it's changed by install scripts of modules, but I
haven't verified that)

what should I do to have modules.dep always newer than modules.conf?

btw all the modules work as expected (autoload and all that stuff)

problem is to tell your remote session, that it should use the
CORBA-naimng server of your local machine, otherwise i doubt it would be

So how do you repoint the nameserver in this case?

2.2.17 from ftp.kernel.org, its more recent then the debian packages
which are really patched up 2.2.17pre6.

2.4 kernels are not finished and are still buggy. i would stay away

Haven't a clue, I'm afraid. I got my Voodoo card long after installing
Debian, and judging from /etc/X11/XF86Config I just re-ran xf86config. I

Aside from using dpkg itself, any Unix system should be able to unpack
Debian packages. If you do 'ar x filename.deb', you'll get three files:

  * debian-binary, basically just a version identifier;
  * control.tar.gz, with information about the package and maintainer
scripts and so on;
  * data.tar.gz, which is a filesystem archive.

iBCS libsocket libnls -help

 Hello to all Debianers

I got to deal with UNIX sockets ( from a SCO C program ) under

It seems I got to emulate libsocket ( linls and libx too ) under
Linux.
Isn't it possible to use a shared SCO Unix libsocket.a ???

The solution to Emulate libsocket.a seems to be iBCS ( Intel Binary
Compatibility System ).
This needs to patch the kernel, the only version iBCS ( and iBCS extras )
packages I found were foe a calera distribution.

 Am I forced to use a specific kernel ( 2.2.14 ??? )

Is it possible that the 2.4testn kernel give me more support
about this ???

Where would it be possible to find a list of things I got to do and
warnings for possible difficulties ???

Thanks to Linux and all Linuzians :-))

Did the update to xfree 4.0.x destroy your 3.3.6 configuration,
precisely - can I choose between both in the startx script?

The magazin C'T (www.heise.de) had a article recently about this

Hopefuly they managed a workaround.

As for the initial debian install - I had the same problems as
Juergen.
After using dselect again and insuring no broken dependancies, Xfree
setup worked reliable (in case of my ATI 128) and the server appears
to be very fast. The videocard chip is recognized by the server.

i assume you already have
LoadModule php3_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp3.so
in your httpd.conf.
Additionally, you will have to put lines like
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php
...etc
in srm.conf so that apache knows which files it should process through
php. (httpd.conf and srm.conf should both be in /etc/apache).

hope that helps,

Yaeh,

You have to add in your httpd.conf file:

For PHP3:

AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps

For PHP4:

#
# And for PHP 4.x, use:
#
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

nfs client crash

2000-10-25 Thread Suresh Kumar.R
Hi,

I get the following message and the machine crashes, apparently when it
tries to access our nfs server.

nfs: task 588 cant get a request slot

This is not the server problem (most probably) as the files can be
accessed at the same time from someother client machine.

This error occurs only in certain specific machines.

The clients runs a mix of stormix and debian potato 2.2. The file systems
are mounted in the client using autofs while in the server, they are
mounted at boot time using /etc/fstab.

Any suggestions?

2000-10-25 Thread Bob Edwards
Good day,

Thanks to help from several on this list,
I am very close to getting my mouse
and keyboard problems taken care
of. I really appreciate the time out
of your busy schedules.

Here is where I'm at currently. I'm so
very close to fixing both problems.
My mouse works in console mode
just fine, in x not so fine.

The line in the /etc/gpm.conf file
reads : "type =PS/2", so I changed
the same line to "type=PS/2" in
the XF86Config file.

In the /etc/gpm.conf file there is
a symbolic link from /dev/mouse
to /etc/gpmdata.

However, in the /etc/gpm.conf.file,
an earlier line reads:
device"/etc/psaux".

There is not a symbolic link
between /dev/psaux to
/dev/mouse.

I took care of most of the keyboard
problems, the only thing is that I have
a microsoft natural keyboard, and I
cannot use the number pad on the far
right. Everything else on the keyboard
works fine, and the server no longer
sends me error messages when
I try to start x.

For your review, relevant sections of
my XF86Config file as it now stands:

**
keyboard section

Protocol "standard"
AutoRepeat500 5
XkbModel "Microsoft"

EndSection
***
Section Pointer

Protocol"PS/2"
Device "/dev/gpmdata"
BaudRate 1200
#ZaxisMapping 4 5
Buttons3

EndSection
**

X does start, and the pointer goes to
the bottom of the screen, but it will
only move back and forth across the
bottom of the screen, but not
up and down.

Bob Edwards

Easy way:
# apt-get cygnus-stylesheets
$ db2html some_file.sgml
$ lynx some_file.html

Interesting way:
Surf to: http://people.debian.org/~bortz/SGML-HOWTO

Note to self: find out if there's a task deb for sgml/xml.

Dual OS

2000-10-25 Thread Clayton Stapleton
Hi Debian's;
Have installed Debian 2.2 (potato) using 3 CD's from CheapBytes.
Things are going ok except that when I run "uname -a" the return
is "2.2.15-4mdk" whereas was expecting "2.2.2.17pre6.deb".

My system is a Pentium 166MMX, 64MB RAM, cd-rom, floppy,
2 hard drives 8.1G and 9.1G. Mandrake is installed on /dev/hda1
(8.1G) with lilo using the MBR for startup. It also provides for
starting alternate OS which I use. Mandrake was installed before
I installed Debian.

Used Mandrake to fdisk /dev/hdb so that there is 4 partitions on
/dev/hdb. "dev/hdb1", "/dev/hdb5", "/dev/hdb6" and "/dev/hdb7".
Used Debian to activate "dev/hdb1" as "/", "dev/hdb5" as "/usr",
"dev/hdb6" as "/var" and "dev/hdb7" as "/home".

Why didn't Debian use the kernel version 2.2.17pre6 that is on
the CD's instead of using 2.2.15-4mdk?

TIA

In general, you need a tool capable of reading whatever instantiation
of SGML the files are and doing appropriate processing/rendering. For
certain DTDs, you probably already have appropriate software, but
those files are generally referred to as just "HTML". :-)

While I haven't looked at the WINE documentation, I wouldn't be
surprised if the files are in DocBook format. (Look at the first line
of the file; it should have a declaration, and it'll
say if it's DocBook or something else.) For general-purpose SGML
processing, I'd recommend installing the jade and jadetex packages.
To format DocBook documents, also install docbook and
docbook-stylesheets.

At this point, you're ready to do the formatting. Look for a DSSSL
style sheet file (it'll probably have a .dsl extension); if one
doesn't exist, use
/usr/lib/sgml/stylesheet/dsssl/docbook/nwalsh/print/docbook.dsl
instead. Then run

jade -t tex -d (name-of-dsl-file) file.sgml
jadetex file
jadetex file
xdvi file
dvips file (etc.)

modules and permissions

2000-10-25 Thread Anthony Fox
Hi,

I have three questions related to installing the alsa sound modules in my
potato box. At the moment, the alsa sound modules are loaded into the
kernel at boot time. They are not specified in /etc/modules. They are
specified in /etc/modules.conf, but this should not cause them to be
loaded at boot time, correct? How do I get the alsa sound modules to be
loaded on demand, i.e. when an app tries to access /dev/dsp, instead of at
boot time.

Second, root has access to the sound devices and to the cdrom device, but
users do not. I have tried adding my user to the audio and cdrom groups
by appending the name to the audio and cdrom lines in /etc/group. This
didn't do the trick, though. What permissions do I need to set to allow
users access to audio and the cdrom device?

Finally, for some reason, I am having problems mounting cds in the cdrom
device. I on occasion get an error that the kernel does not recognize the
cdrom device as a block device. This may have something to do with the
fact that I installed scsi support and modules and ide-scsi emulation in
order to use the cd-rw functionality of the device. however, none of
these modules are loaded into the kernel at all, so they should not be
causing any conflicts, correct?

Of course, thanks in advance.

-Anthony.

Serious newbie needs help!

2000-10-25 Thread Viper5192
Hi, I'm really quite new at this. Just installed 2.0.4 of Debian on my
laptop, wiping out Windoze completely. :-)

I just have the basics as the person I got it from just gave me the basic
files, no packages, just the base system. Anyone have the whole set on CD?

Oh and I also have a problem. When I first installed Debian, I was networked
from my Laptop (Debian Box) to my Windows ME Desktop machine, in so much as I
could get a good ping from it. The laptop has a combo card, an old Megahertz
xjem1144 10base2/14.4 Ethernet/modem with the xjacks connector for network.

Well I had been having problems with file and printing sharing on my desktop
so I finally get that working, and now I can't ping my Windoze Box. Must
have set something different in Windoze.

Help!

Debian usually gives you the choice among several of the last stable kernels.
Just install the kernel-package and kernel-modules packages corresponding
to your preferred kernel version (this will also cause the deinstall of
current kernel-package and modules ).

I am using 2.4.0-test9 and it seems fine so far. It allows me to use
LVM and ReiserFS, both of which are great!

Only use kernel 2.4 on test systems which you can afford to have go down
if something goes wrong. The current 2.4 versions have the "pre" on their
names explicitly because of their beta nature -- Things might work, but
there's no guarentee.

On a production system which must "just work", 2.2.17 is a better choice
of kernel.

I haven't tried the 4.0 server with my Voodoo card yet - just the Mach64.
And unfortunately, I don't quite remember what went on with the config file. As
far as I
remember, it updated it automatically - but I could be completely wrong here.
I'm pretty sure
that XF4.0 can't read XF3.3.x config files. The thing that I remember is that
XF4.0 expects the
config file in /etc/XF86Config (as opposed to /etc/X11/XF86Config) and the
installation of
XF4.0 didn't move it over automatically.
If I were you and wanted to try 4.0, I would definitely make a backup. I
haven't had any
troubles with my current installation, but some people obviously couldn't get
it to work at all
and had to revert to 3.3.x.

Re: PCI modems (success!)

2000-10-25 Thread Ken Januski
Hi Leonardo,

It only took about a week to figure out that your message below did in fact
tell me exactly what I needed to know in order to get my pci modem working
correctly. I was thrown by the memory address that /proc/pci showed. But
once I realized I needed to put that in the /dev/serial.conf file rather
than ttyS* I was fine. For some stupid reason on my part I didn't put in the
correct IRQ, according to /proc/pci. So I connected but very slowly. Modem
HOWTO, a great document, suggested this was due to an incorrect IRQ. When I
then changed serial.conf to include the IRQ that /proc/pci showed my
connection speeded up significantly.

Thanks to you, all the other debian list users who messaged me, and the
Serial and Modem HOWTOs for helping me solve this problem.

cron, syslogd, klogd died

2000-10-25 Thread Bob Bernstein
Quite serendipitously I discovered that the above processes had
stopped running on a potato system (i386) I have here. I noticed my
'locate' command did not seem to be returning good results, and when I
looked it was dated Oct 18. Then 'ps ax' told the Rest of the Story. A
reboot brought those three services up and all seems well now. Three
questions occur to me:

1] What might bring about those three processes (and no others,
apparently) dying?

2] What might be the reason I did not get notification that there was
a problem? I notice the user aliased for root and postmaster's mail
did not get notified of the problem, and in fact does not seem to be
getting *any* system reports. I coulda sworn I ran 'newaliases' after
I set up /etc/aliases.

3] I note this language in 'man aliases':

"After aliasing has been done, local and valid recipients who have a
".forward" file in their home directory have messages forwarded to the
list of users defined in that file."

Does this mean the user who I have aliased to get root and
postmaster's must have a .forward file in his home directory in order
to get mail for root and postmaster? I don't understand the connection
between aliasing and .forward files. I have the used the latter, for
instance with procmail, or send mail on to another email address, but
why this mention of .forward in 'man aliases'.

Sorry to go on so long here. Many tia's for light shed on any of the
above confusions!

Sound on Diamond Sonic Impact

Sound refuses to work although adding user rland to group audio, in

some noise as just tested on the other PC - it doesn't.

Dave Sherohman suggested to use gom -it or any other mixer. When do I
need a mixer (my aim is just wanting to here the CDROM playing)? A
have only little knowledge in this area too.

Gnome's "gmix" complaines about "no mixers found" and asks me if I had
compiled sound into the kernel.

Martin mailed me that /etc/modules.conf would be a optional config
file - however, which file does the kernel use to load a module when
booting up?

Last but not least - linux.aureal.com seems to be dead - sigh.
(SuSe recommendes to have a look at this site for various drivers)

A general question - do I have to cc my reply to the person helping

2000-10-25 Thread tjm
Hello,

I have had the same problem although it doesn't seem to
cause any adverse condition with the machine. The startup
script /etc/rcS.d/S20modutils (/etc/init.d/modutils) runs
depmod -a when the machine boots, but it seems that the
time stamp that results from the new modules.dep file
being made is incorrect. It appears that the date is
ok but the time is not, making it appear the modules.dep
file may be older than modules.conf. If I run depmod -a
after the machine is up and running, the time/date stamp on
the modules.dep file is correct. Maybe the system time that
is used when the startup script is run is not correct until
later in the boot process, but I don't know enough of
this to make changes safely. Try changing the time/date of
the modules.conf back a couple days by using 'touch' or
remaking the file (update-modules) after turning the system
time back temporarily to see if it makes a difference. A
proper solution would be much nicer, though.

Using Debian potato with a 2.2.17 kernel.

2000-10-25 Thread Martin Waller

Hello,

I have a friend here who abandoned potato 'cos he couldn't get gnome helix
running under potato.

Can it be done (without resorting to woody)?
How?

Thanks

Basic Kernel Question

2000-10-25 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello All,
I keep running into a problem everytime I upgrade my kernel. Before I
upgrade I can place a floppy into the drive and type mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
with no errors. After the upgrade I do the same command I get an error about
needing to specifiy the file format. What am I missing when I upgrade my
kernel. Also I would like to add a basic firewall to just protect itself. I
dont need ipmasq I just want to close all ports except one. What will I need
to add to the kernel?
Thanks everybody

I did a little Woodage for the Helix-GNOME install. I'm still mostly
Potato.
Here's what I did:

1) Change the stable to unstable lines to /etc/apt/sources.list and add "deb
http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian unstable main" to it.
2) apt-get update
3) apt-get install task-helix-gnome
4) Change the unstable lines in sources.list back to stable. (Except for the
helixcode entry.)

Unfortunately, the computers in question are behind a web proxy which
requires manually logging on, so that http access method of apt won't
work

you should do mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /floppy. Replace vfat with whatever
format your floppy is in -- minix, ext2, msdos, etc.

There is a auto option you can place in /etc/fstab for the floppy device.
However for that to work you need to either a) compile support for the common
file systems into the kernel or b) auto load all of those modules at boot.

Add deb http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distiributions/debian unstable main
to /etc/apt/sources.list
run apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

This will grab the helix stuff for you and leave everything else alone just to
make sure read what packages it is going to upgrade before you say yes. I've
done this it works well and I'm very happy with it.

Apt? Is there anything it can't do?

How to test HDD thoroughly? (Debian Linux "unstable" 2.2.16 kernel)

2000-10-25 Thread hogan
I have a 486DX4/100 (kinda) running Debian Linux "unstable" 2.2.16 kernel..

A week or two back it started misbehaving and I asked a few of you guys about
the place about what "Unknown vector XXX in CPU#0" and "hda interrupt lost"
meant..

Some people said that it sounds like the hard disk is on the way out. What I
want to know is, how do I test an ext2fs formatted hard disk more intensively
than at just a filesystem level?

The hard disk in question is a Fujitsu, 1GB or so.
The IDE controller is a SiS.
The motherboard is both PCI and ISA (strange as most 486s were ISA only or
VLB - also - should it be edge or level detect for PCI settings??)

If it is indeed the harddisk that has died, does anyone have any
good-condition 1GB-8GB IDE drives? I don't think this old 486'll handle over
8GB, that and I'm not too crash hot on using some of that 'patch my bios on
boot' master boot sector voodoo evil :)

Any suggestions welcome
Anthony

I don't see anything other than http lines mentioned on the Helix Code
sites. Got modems and a lot of time on your hands?
:) Or at least use a modem to download it to one machine and then use apt-move
to create an internal apt source.

Fw: Boot-time Usenet warning on cvalle

2000-10-25 Thread carolina valle
Hi,

I've installed Debian as a partition to my Windows98 laptop...I'm a new user
to Debian/Linux and I've been getting these emails at work. I've been asked
to change the name of my machine (which is apparently 'fux'), but I don't
know how to go about doing this. I've been getting emails like this for 2
weeks now. I do remember choosing the name 'fux' at one point during the
installation, in which a more experienced Linux user was walking me through
it. I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me how to solve this
problem. It seems that emails are being sent to 'root'@yellowbrix.com and
then forwarded to my box (fux). I need to stop this from happening.

Thanks so much!

Carol

smtp domain question

2000-10-25 Thread Debian Ghost
Hey Guys,
I have just changed DNS to point to a different domain.
I changed from ghost.net.cfw.com to ghost.ntelos.net. I edited
the /etc/exim.conf file to reflect the change, but for some reason
when I telnet to smtp "ESMTP", it still thinks it is the old domain rather
than the new. Is there a global configuration I need to make system wide
to get my services to recognize the new domain?

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc> telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 ghost.net.cfw.com ESMTP Exim 3.12 #1 Wed, 25 Oct 2000 13:30:24 -0500

Any advice appriciated!
Thank you kindly,

Funny. But the following post appears to answer your question. Can you
"modprobe" properly? If you can't, then your problem is probably a
misconfigured boot manager (lilo or grub?). From the suffix alone, 2.2.15-4mdk
appears to be a Mandrake kernel. If Ethan's solution doesn't work (I haven't
tried it yet), try mine (boot Debian as a non-Linux OS).

sounds like you weren't configuring lilo correctly, i assume you have
seperate / filesystems for each distro, and you did NOT have seperate
/boot partitions, you probably had a lilo.conf like this:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
 root=/dev/hda1 ## redhat
 read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz
 root=/dev/hda2 ## debian
 read-only

on your redhat /etc and ran lilo from redhat. this would boot your
REDHAT kernel using your Debian root filesystem (and thus debian
modules which don't match the redhat kernel)

what you should have done instead is:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hda1 ## redhat
read-only

image=/debian/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hda2 ## debian
read-only

and mounted your debian / on /debian under redhat, THEN run lilo, and
your debian kernel will be loaded for debian and your redhat kernel
for redhat.

remember that lilo does not read /etc/lilo.conf at boot time, it only
uses it at install time to create a blocklist for the specified
kernel. the root= is not used by lilo except as an argument it passes
to the kernel. the first lilo.conf just creates one blocklist for the
redhat kernel and passes it a different root= argument.

the latter creates two blocklists, one for redhat one for debian
kernels.

 Look in /etc/logrotate.conf and /etc/logrotate.d/mysql-server.
There should be only one entry for /var/log/mysql.log.
Sounds like the upgrade to woody duplicated this entry.

pg_log is poorly named. It is not a log file. DO NOT touch it!
It records the state of every transaction in your database; if you
lose pg_log you lose your data!

This is part of your local MySQL configuration, it's part of the hosts
table in the mysql database itself. Looks like you're not getting a
postinstallation or configuration job running correctly. I'd try a
*purge* of MySQL, including wiping your databases (if you need to
preserve data, try moving the directory elsewhere for the interim).
Then reinstall.

Good luck.

Mike,

Thank you for responding. I checked the files as you mentioned.
/etc/logrotate.conf doesn't mention any mysql.log at all.
/etc/logrotate.d/mysql-server contains one entry for
/var/log/mysql.log and one for /var/log/mysql.err . I am kind of
stumped as to where the message I am getting is coming from as I can't
seem to find any indication as to why this would be so.

apt-get tends to be interruptable. If you haven't already booted, you
should find that you can, your disks will probably require an fsck
(which will happen automatically). If "apt-get dist-upgrade" doesn't
run, it will probably prompt you to run "dpkg --configure -a" to finish
configuring any half-configured packages.

Pretty clean, all-in-all. Try that with RPM .

There was a recent article on this posted at LinuxToday -- within the
past two weeks, IIRC. There may also be docs at the Debian website
and/or through Google.

Hardware depends on your setup. For simple X Terminals, minimal
hardware (486, Pentium), with a good graphics card, high-speed
networking, and a good monitor, should be sufficient. For various types
of local processing, you're going to want more memory and CPU. Look for
savings in administration, not hardware, though you may see some
advantages there as well.

You may want to try "Microsoft" instead.
That was given as the default protocol during my XF86Config.
Well, I thought that couldn't be right (although the mouse was moving perfectly
with it) as I also have a PS/2 mouse.
So I changed the protocol to "PS/2" and the "device to "/dev/psaux" and the
mouse was frozen forever...

I tried that but the problem seems to be that the modules.conf is
updated during boot process (looking and date/time of the file), and
modules.dep is not (or is updated sooner)...

well, at least I see I am not alone... does this look like a bug? last

It's part of the woody (unstable) distribution. Point your

apt-get update
apt-get install libstdc++2.10 (I guess... See the package name with

It will install libqt2.2, and all the sttuff it needs.
I think you have to install libstdc++2.10 before installing KDE2. It

Infrared hardware

2000-10-25 Thread Tom Allard

I'm interested in getting an infrared device for my desktop Linux box at
home. My requirements are that I must be able to control my VCR & Dish
Network satellite receiver and it must be able to receive commands from the
remote. Using it to sync with my palm would be nice, but it's really the
control of the VCR & Satellite that I'm interested in...

I've looked at IRMAN, but that's a receiver only. I'd like to be able to
use my linux box to control my video taping. My satellite receiver has no
"timer" functions and my Sony VCR's "cable mouse" doesn't know how to
control the satellite.

Price, of course, is a consideration (but so are additional features).
Anything from a simple serial port dongle to a TV card would be considered.
It absolutely must work under Linux (currently Potato w/kernel 2.2.15, but
that can be upgraded as needed).

it, however, the resulting "c" code (from perl -MO script.pl) has some

Setting up on-board sound hardware, also internal modem

2000-10-25 Thread Mr J M Drake
I'm making slow progress setting up a Debian system on an M800LMR
motherboard with onboard sound. The mobo documentation identifies the
Linux driver module as cmpci. This loads happily and finds sound hardware,
but can't write to it - as seen in this output from dmesg:

...
cmpci: version v2.41-nomodem time 09:53:24 Jun 25 2000
cmpci: found CM8738 adapter at io 0xcc00 irq 9
...
cmpci: write: chip lockup? dmasz 2048 fragsz 512 count 2048 hwptr 173
swptr 173
cmpci: write: chip lockup? dmasz 2048 fragsz 512 count 2048 hwptr 1145
swptr 1145

I've been advised that irq 9 is bad news and I should change it to
something else, but I don't know how to do that. Can anyone confirm that
this is the problem, explain what to do or otherwise help me?

I also have an internal Genius GM56PCI-L modem, which came with no info on
Linux drivers at all. I've emailed the manufacturers but as yet had no
reply. Can anyone identify the correct module and point me in the right
direction for setting it up?

Many thanks

domain change

Hey Guys,
I posted this question earlier in another way, but no one replied to it.
Maybe if I ask in another way:

I changed the domain name of my machine (via DNS) and was wondering
if there was a global file that I need to change to tell my machine it is

host.new.domain rather than host.old.domain.

I changed the exim.conf file (sendmail) but when I telnet into my machine,
somehow exim still thinks it is the old name even though I changed the
conf file. Is there any global file that I need to edit to get rid of the
old.domain and tell the machine it is new.domain?

Thanks a lot!

I don't think I'm the one you meant, but I know Partition Magic 5 can
resize ext2 partitions. I don't remember whether it handles swap
partitions, but you can just delete and recreate those.

An upgrade to some woody packages broke my lpd but replacing (on

I've used fips once, to resize a Win98 partition (shrinking it), prior
to installing GNU/Linux.

I've used Partition Magic, once, to resize several partitions on a
laptop -- both shrinking and growing them. Working without docs, the
process was moderately terrifying, however, I was willing to skotch the
whole disk, so I accepted the risk. The process takes a fair bit of
time, is *not* immediately intuitive, is hindered by a deceptive
topical resemblance to the Legacy MS Windows GUI, though the guts are in
fact quite different (minor example: it's not possible to move a window
on screen). The process doesn't indicate when it's going to start (when
you've committed to changes), or provide any realistic idea of how long
it will take to complete.

My preferred partitioning mode is to back up all relevant partitions to
tape, verify backups, repartition disks as desired, and restore backups.
It's somewhat more time-intensive, but it works, and generally reduces
risks.

If I've got the spare disk space, I'll usually make the tapes as a
precautionary measure, but use a disk partition as a staging area for
actual data transfer -- much faster.

gnome shortcuts

Hey All,
Silly little question here.
I can swear I used to drag icons from the Gnome pager to the desktop to
create a "shortcut". I recently had to reinstall enlightenment (not
gnome) but when I started X again, all my gnome stuff was gone. When I try
to drag icons off the main gnome pager to the desktop, they don't
stick. It is like a paper icon that flies back to the pager. Could anyone
tell me what I am doing wrong and suggest a way to get icons on the
desktop.

I also use multiple virtual desktops and sometimes the gnome pager will be
on all of them and sometimes it will only pop up on my original desktop
but not the other desktops. Anyone have a clue about that?

Thanks so much,

Try compiling with -I/usr/lib/perl5/5.005/i386-linux/CORE.

>Any ideas what packages might have these? Or any general pointers in
>general on byte compiling perl?

To be honest: don't bother. You end up with an enormous executable
unless you have a libperl.so, and even then you have to assume people
you're distributing it to have that library too. If you compile, evals
get noticeably hairier. And it's harder to debug.

Also, you should understand that the speed gains are relatively small.
Compiling speeds up the loading process, of course, but after that the
script will (as far as I know) run at the same speed. Even the loading
process isn't all that slow. As a data point, some benchmarks done by
people at the web server company I work for compared CGIs written in C
and Perl against various other forms of dynamic content generation, and
while the difference was there it wasn't anything to worry about (a
fraction of the difference between CGI and FastCGI, for example).

If you want to speed up your Perl scripts, there are much more useful
things you can do:

  * Don't 'use diagnostics' in production code. It slows down compiling
by about a third of a second to half a second of a few-hundred-line
script on this P3-450.

  * Check your use of other modules to make sure you aren't sucking in
large volumes of general-purpose code. For instance, using the
Exporter might be overkill if you just want to export one symbol, as
you could manipulate the symbol table yourself, or using IO::File
might be overkill if all you want is localized filehandles, as you
can do that with 'local *FH'.

  * Use the /o switch on regexes containing variable interpolation if
you're sure the variables won't change over the lifetime of the
script. Or, if they will change but not within some inner loop, wrap
that loop in an eval().

  * study() scalars on which you're going to do a lot of pattern
matches.

  * Use Perlish constructs where you can. For instance, 'foreach my
$element (@list)' is faster than 'for (my $i = 0; my $element =
$list[$i]; $i++)'.

  * Generally, the fewer operators you use, the faster your code will
be.

  * Watch out for list assignments, passing large argument lists into
functions, and returning large lists from functions, all of which
can lead to a lot of data being copied around unnecessarily. Use
references instead if the lists are large.

  * Use techniques like the Schwartzian Transform or the Guttman-Rosler
Transform when sorting large lists on only part of each element.

  * Cache the results of frequently called functions. The Memoize module
on CPAN may help with this.

  * Don't use functions that invoke shells if you can possibly avoid it,
for reasons of both security and speed.

  * ... and, of course, the usual "check your algorithms", as you would
for any language.

Hope that helps,

What i would try next is to comment out the 'include' line in
/etc/logrotate.conf. I am assuming you have a line like:
include /etc/logrotate.d .
This should ignore the mysql-server file that contains
/var/log/mysql.log. Then do #run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily and see what
messages you get.
If you get no error message , check /var/log to make sure
that mysql.log is still getting rotated.

In the manual of SuSE Linux (German Distribution) it's recommended to
create a /boot partition for all disks above 500MB. Debian defaults to
no /boot partition. However, the File System Standard says that /boot
is the place for all static files of the boot loader, the biggest of
them (normally) is the kernel.
IMHO, for a standalone workstation it doesn't really matter. A separate
partition is good for servers since you can prohibit accessing it (mount
it readonly). Since it's quite easy to create, it's always a good idea
to create such a partition.

> Is it good, bad or it does not matter? What about it's size. 10Mb is enough?

About the size: Depends on your kernel, but 10MB surely is enough. On our
small server we have a /boot partition of 5 MB, while 1.3MB are used
(standard Debian installation, standard kernel). If you're going to
install a kernel with huge multimedia support compiled in, you maybe
need 10MB, I never checked that out.
It's always a good way to use 1 block for the /boot partition,
especially on large disks.
You should place the /boot partition first on the disk, it's
easier to administrate and you avoid problems such as 1024-cyl and the
like.
