So unless things have changed recently the only requirement is to have gnome-screensaver package installed. > >>> Same issue for switch user. >> There is no standard for user switching, gdm, lightdm and probably sddm all >> have their own interfaces for user switching. > It would be good to have a standard and I think debian gdm maintainers > are the right people to initiate - being in a position to support > multiple DEs, such a standard. It would be good, lightdm have a "org.freedesktop.login1.Manager" dbus interface which despite the name is not a spec, which works ok as a fallback but you loose all DE integration. I'm not sure upstreams would take a fallback solution and coming up with a standard which allows for the required integrations seems like it would be difficult. > > >

Bug#745611: libkscreensaver5: Can't unlock screen with locker set to 'Desktop Widgets', and multiple monitors configured
Package: libkscreensaver5 Version: 4:4.11.8-1 Severity: important The Unlock popup fails to display when screen locker is set to 'Desktop Widgets', and multiple monitors configured - leaving desktop irrevocably locked. With the second display disabled, the unlock widget appears. With the second display to-the-right-of, or below the first display disabled, the unlock widget appears. With the second display to-the-left-of, or above the first display, the unlock widget fails to appear. This problem first manifested itself with the system being unusable after suspend-to-ram (no keyboard or mouse input would be accepted by any windows or the window manager etc.) - I eventually narrowed it down to this setting. To reproduce - go to settings -> Display and Monitor -> Screen Locker Select 'Desktop Widgets' and press the 'Configure' button. Press the 'Leave ScreenSaver' button in the top-right. But we have things to show! The current develop/7 branch on github <https://github.com/openlink/virtuoso-opensource/> contains a completely revamped debian/ subdirectory; we've merged some aspects of work done for the LOD2 project and reviewed the existing Debian patches; the result is an upstream source tree that builds a pleasantly granular set of packages (server, minimal server, ODBC drivers, JDBC drivers, etc) natively. This will be included in release 7.2 due hopefully very soon. It seems this would be a fortuitous moment to ask: if I'm wanted to be regarded as the VOS maintainer in Debian, how do I go about officially signing on? Bug#800821: also needs service files
Unfortunately quite a lot of paths have changed in the transition from KDE 4 to 5, and dolphin moved to KDE5 while konqueror seems to be still on KDE4: $ konqueror --version Qt: 4.8.7 KDE Development Platform: 4.14.12 Konqueror: 4.14.10 $ dolphin --version dolphin 15.08.1 I found that in addition to dolphinpart.so, you also need to copy/link various service files: /usr/share/kde4/services/dolphinpart.desktop -> /usr/share/kservices5/dolphinpart.desktop /usr/share/kde4/services/kcmdolphingeneral.desktop -> /usr/share/kservices5/kcmdolphingeneral.desktop /usr/share/kde4/services/kcmdolphinnavigation.desktop -> /usr/share/kservices5/kcmdolphinnavigation.desktop /usr/share/kde4/services/kcmdolphinservices.desktop -> /usr/share/kservices5/kcmdolphinservices.desktop /usr/share/kde4/services/kcmdolphinviewmodes.desktop -> /usr/share/kservices5/kcmdolphinviewmodes.desktop While the following binary files need to be taken from a previous version of dolphin: /usr/lib/kde4/dolphinpart.so /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_dolphingeneral.so /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_dolphinnavigation.so /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_dolphinservices.so /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_dolphinviewmodes.so /usr/lib/libdolphinprivate.so.4 This worked for me, although I can't guarantee it's either a minimal or a complete setup. Ofc, better to downgrade the dolphin package as you suggest and wait for it to be fixed properly.

Bug#300562: KMail insists on downloading URLs before passing them to Galeon
Package: kmail Version: 4:2.2.2-14.7 Severity: normal I use KMail and Galeon. I've been dragging URLs from KMail into Galeon to avoid Konqueror from popping up, because there wasn't a configuration setting in KMail saying which browser to send URLs to. I recently realised that the KDEControlCentre might be useful (I don't run KDE) and when I changed the file associations, Galeon did indeed pop up. However: KMail doesn't pass the URL to Galeon - it insists on downloading it and passing the temporary file over. This has two problems: 1. KMail insists on downloading the file before passing it on to Galeon, so instead of getting a website URL in Galeon, I get some random temporary file. I can't see an way to tell KDE that Galeon should be given URLs to handle itself. (With Galeon, I can tell it that a helper application knows about URLs; KDE seems to lack that option.) 2. The running instance of Galeon sometimes doesn't pick up the temporary file before the instance started by KMail returns (having told the running instance about the file given to it by KMail). KMail deletes the file because it thinks Galeon's finished. Issue 2 is a result of issue 1, but could conceivably cause problems for other client/server programs like emacsclient. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux cardinal 2.4.18.20040523 #1 Sat Apr 24 01:30:06 BST 2004 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages kmail depends on: ii kdelibs3 4:2.2.2-13.woody.13 KDE core libraries (runtime files) ii libc62.2.5-11.8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0 2.6.6.1-5.2 client library to control the FAM ii libjpeg626b-5The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkdenetwork1 4:2.2.2-14.7Common libraries needed for KDE ne ii libmimelib1 4:2.2.2-14.7mime libraries needed for some KDE ii libpng2 1.0.12-3.woody.9PNG library - runtime ii libqt2 3:2.3.1-22 Qt GUI Library (runtime version). ii libstdc++2.10-glibc2 1:2.95.4-11woody1 The GNU stdc++ library ii procmail 3.22-5 Versatile e-mail processor. ii xlibs4.1.0-16woody5 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.1.4-1.0woody0 compression library - runtime -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#300614: kmail: deletes emails when manually applying a filter for all messages in inbox manually
Package: kmail Version: 4:3.3.2-2 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss After definig a new filter, I pressed CTRL+A to mark all messages in Inbox, then I pressed CTRL+J to apply a filter manually. After that the Kmail window got white, nothing was going anymore. The programm had kinda overflow. I rebooted because I wasn't able to do a killall kmail. Some messages were still had the right subject and sender but when I wanted to read them they got the invailid marker as well = I lost all mails in inbox - even those which contained some important data! Hi. Thanks for this. I ran 'locate Galeon' and found a few Galeon.desktop files: /home/warwick/.gnome/Debian/Galeon.desktop /home/warwick/.kde/share/applnk/Debian/Galeon.desktop /home/warwick/.wmx/Debian/Galeon /usr/share/oaf/GNOME_Galeon_Automation.oaf /var/lib/gnome/Debian/Apps/Net/Galeon.desktop /var/lib/kde/menu/Net/Galeon.desktop I updated the Exec line for those in my home directory: $ cat .kde/share/applnk/Debian/Galeon.desktop [Desktop Entry] Comment=Galeon Exec=/usr/bin/galeon %u Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/galeon.xpm InitialPreference=2 MimeType=image/png;all/x-url;application/x-url;Application Name=Galeon ServiceTypes= Terminal=false Type=Application and restarted X (to ensure that KDEinit was dead) but no dice. > If you created the command by using the application tree, this would > suggest that the .desktop file installed by Galeon is broken. I did create the association by choosing Galeon from the menu that pops up: Internet->Debian->Galeon. I just tried typing /usr/bin/galeon %u in to the 'enter the name' field and moving that entry to the top of the list, and that now successfully launches Galeon with the URL, but other than the name change I can't see any real difference between the two files, so I don't understand why this one works when the other doesn't, so I'm not sure what to ask the Galeon maintainer to fix - can you advise? $ cat .kde/share/applnk/galeon\ %u.desktop [Desktop Entry] Comment= Exec=/usr/bin/galeon %u Icon=unknown InitialPreference=4 MimeType=text/html;Application Name=galeon %u ServiceTypes= Terminal=false Type=Application Also, is there something I should be using to edit these files, other that Vi? I'm a home user, so not mission-critical, although I'd be upset if all my por^H^H^Hdata was deleted. > Restarting KDE or running kbuildsycoca should apply all changes made to the > files in the mean time. Mmm. Interesting. Doesn't seem to float that way. I moved the old Galeon thingy up (with my user area's copies of the Galeon.desktop at Exec=... %u), ran kbuildsycoca, and... still broken. Moved the new galeon\ %u one back, things work again. Edited the /var/lib/{kde,gnome}/.../Net/Galeon.desktop files to add the %u to the Exec line, re-ran kbuildsycoca, moved it back up again, and... no polenta. Have I erred? Bug#298254: Diskless systems aren't random enough
I tracked this down on the KDE bug system and a temporary workaround is to put RandomDevice=/dev/urandom in the [General] section of /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. The reason for the failure to start is that by default /dev/random is used and that will block if there isn't enough randomness available. /dev/urandom will not block but will return less random results. I expect it's kdm that is trying to generate a random XAuth number before starting X which is why the XServer isn't even run and tweaking the timeouts won't help. I don't know where to place the blame for this bug. /etc/init.d/urnadom sets up /dev/random to have some randomness at startup but a quick test on my system shows that it is easy to use up all the random numbers and they don't get replenished until I type or move the mouse. This script indicates how much randomness is available: while true do dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/null bs=512 count=1 done Performing a find on a locally mounted disk gives around 10 bytes/s, waggling the mouse gets about 30 byte/s, find on the NFS mounted root disk gives 0 bytes/s. Maybe that is the bug, if the NFS system or the networking stuff could add to the randomness this bug wouldn't happen. I'm using TCP for NFS and I used to use UDP and they both stop kdm starting. If you have a local disk then a "find $mount-point > /dev/null &" just before /etc/init.d/kdm might help or just stick to /dev/urandom. I think this is either a Debian bug in not getting enough randomness in the system at startup or a Linux bug in not generating randomness from the network. Bug#844707: plasma-workspace: plasmadesktop - excessive cpu usage, slow desktop operation
Package: plasma-workspace Version: 4:5.8.2-1 Severity: important plasmashell consumes excessive CPU, increases over time. Possibly I'm hitting a couple of bugs here, but I'm not sure... plasmashell starts by stat()ing about 4 files per second, and consuming 50% of one CPU core. CPU then climbs to around 110% of one core, and the stat() rate (under strace) falls to about 3 per second. This is 10 seconds of strace output from a freshly started plasmashell: http://buttersideup.com/plasmashell-debug/plasmashell-highcpu-strace-fresh and a summary output taken afterwards: http://buttersideup.com/plasmashell-debug/plasmashell-highcpu-strace-fresh-summary These two are for processes that have been running longer, and have climbed to >100% usage: http://buttersideup.com/plasmashell-debug/plasmashell-highcpu-strace http://buttersideup.com/plasmashell-debug/plasmashell-highcpu-strace-summary Tim. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers unstable-debug APT policy: (500, 'unstable-debug'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages plasma-workspace depends on: ii dbus-x11 1.10.12-1 ii frameworkintegration 5.27.0-1 iu gdb 7.11.1-2+b1 ii iso-codes3.70-1 ii kactivitymanagerd5.8.2-1 ii kde-cli-tools4:5.8.2-1 ii kded55.27.0-1 ii kinit5.27.0-1 ii kio 5.27.0-2 ii kpackagetool55.27.0-1 ii libc62.24-5 ii libcln6 1.3.4-2 ii libdbusmenu-qt5-20.9.3+16.04.20160218-1 ii libgcc1 1:6.2.0-13 ii libgps22 3.16-4 ii libice6 2:1.0.9-1+b1 ii libkf5activities55.27.0-1 ii libkf5auth5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5baloo5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5bookmarks5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5calendarevents55.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5completion55.27.0-1 ii libkf5configcore55.27.0-1 ii libkf5configgui5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5configwidgets5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5coreaddons55.27.0-1 ii libkf5crash5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5dbusaddons55.27.0-1 ii libkf5declarative5 5.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5globalaccel-bin5.27.0-1 ii libkf5globalaccel5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5guiaddons5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5holidays5 16.04.2-1 ii libkf5i18n5 5.27.0-2 ii libkf5iconthemes55.27.0-1 ii libkf5idletime5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5itemviews5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5jobwidgets55.27.0-1 ii libkf5js55.27.0-1 ii libkf5jsembed5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5kdelibs4support5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5kiocore5 5.27.0-2 ii libkf5kiofilewidgets55.27.0-2 ii libkf5kiowidgets55.27.0-2 ii libkf5networkmanagerqt6 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5newstuff5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5notifications5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5notifyconfig5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5package5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5plasma55.27.0-1 ii libkf5plasmaquick5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5quickaddons5 5.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5runner55.27.0-1 ii libkf5service-bin5.27.0-1 ii libkf5service5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5solid5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5texteditor55.27.0-1 ii libkf5textwidgets5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5wallet-bin 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5wallet55.27.0-1 ii libkf5waylandclient5 4:5.27.0-1 ii libkf5widgetsaddons5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5windowsystem5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5xmlgui55.27.0-1 ii libkf5xmlrpcclient5 5.27.0-1 ii libkscreenlocker55.8.2-1 ii libksgrd7

Here (Debian Sid), both packages were installed (xserver-xorg-input-libinput and xserver-xorg-input-evdev). Removing the first and restarting KDE solved the problem for me. $ sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-input-libinput That also removes two or three other packages, so be careful. The KDE people say, it's likely a QT5 bug... just a hint for the maintainer. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Package: konsole Version: 4:20.12.3-1 Severity: normal Tags: a11y X-Debbugs-Cc: t...@seoss.co.uk When a bitmap font is selected, and display scaling is also enabled (KDE -> System Settings -> Display Configuration -> Global scale != 100%), then the fonts are rendered at their unscaled size (this is expected for bitmap fonts), but instead each character is rendered with large amounts of surrounding space. T h e e f f e c t i s a b i t l i k e t h i s , a n d i s n o t u s a b l e . I'm not sure if this is a konsole thing, or a qt/kde thing. Thanks! Tim. p.s. I've tagged this as a11y because I use bitmap fonts AND high dpi displays to avoid chronic eye strain (without which I am limited to about 30 minutes max screen time per day). Whilst I can use vector fonts (e.g. Hack), and also disable font smoothing in the Konsole settings, the resulting fonts look quite ugly, and aren't as easy to read. Bug#989834: konsole: Only possible to select the smallest available size for OpenType Bitmap fonts
Package: konsole Version: 4:20.12.3-1 Severity: normal Tags: a11y X-Debbugs-Cc: t...@seoss.co.uk When selecting a bitmap font via Konsole -> Settings -> Configure Konsole -> Profiles -> Edit -> Appearance -> Font -> Choose, only the smallest font size is displayed for OpenType bitmap fonts. e.g. Install the fonts-terminus-otb package, and run the command: fc-query /usr/share/fonts/opentype/terminus/terminus-normal.otb The following is amongst the report: pixelsize: 12(f)(s) 14(f)(s) 16(f)(s) 18(f)(s) 20(f)(s) 22(f)(s) 24(f)(s) 28(f)(s) 32(f)(s) Terminus is selectable in the list of fonts via the Konsole profile editor, but only the smallest pixelsize (12) is listed as a selectable option. Workaround: Open the font file with fontforge, import only the desired size (e.g. 32), rename the font in Menu -> Element -> Font Info (e.g. "Terminus" to "Terminus32", then export as an OpenType bitmap font (File -> Generate Fonts -> "X11 bitmap only sftnt (otb)" -> Generate. Import the saved font via KDE -> System Settings -> Font Management -> Install from File. Restart Konsole. The desired size is now selectable via the Konsole profile editor. Thanks! Tim. p.s. Bug#989831: konsole: Bitmap fonts rendered incorrectly if display scaling is enabled
Package: konsole Version: 4:20.12.3-1 Followup-For: Bug #989831 X-Debbugs-Cc: t...@seoss.co.uk On 16/06/2021 05:07, Norbert Preining wrote: > On Mon, 14 Jun 2021, Tim Small wrote: >> instead each character is rendered with large amounts >> of surrounding space. >> >> T h e e f f e c t i s a b i t l i k e t h i s , a n d i s >> >> n o t u s a b l e . >> >> I'm not sure if this is a konsole thing, or a qt/kde thing. > But isn't that what you are asking for by setting a global scale to != 100 > ??? I think what the user expecting when a global scale is set, is "When the application says that graphical elements should be size 'x' on screen, then display it at size 'global scale * x' instead". So e.g. If an application would normally display a graphical element with a font which renders at 10 pixels-tall, then when I have a global scale set to 150%, instead it would try and use font which renders at 15 pixels-tall. I'm assuming that konsole would select a larger font in this case (perhaps it's trying to, but it can't because of #989834, or perhaps the rendering pipeline just doesn't allow this sort of decision to be made). >> p.s. I've tagged this as a11y because I use bitmap fonts AND high dpi >> displays to avoid chronic eye strain (without which I am limited to > I understand hidpi, but why bitmap fonts? vector fonts are also > converted to bitmaps and mostly at better quality, so they should > provide better readability and less strain. The thing that gives me eye strain is anti-aliasing (having spoken to an optometrist about this, they think my visual system perceives the fuzzy edges of anti-aliased fonts as being out-of focus, and then continuously tries to make micro adjustments to my eyes' focal distance to bring it into focus, and this causes muscle fatigue). I know that this is quite a niche problem (especially since high dpi displays are now fine for the vast majority of users), and it was much more of a problem for me before I switched to higher resolution displays), there is some mention of it in section 3.3 of this paper: https://jsonj.co.uk/resources/science/papers/plateau2015-jacques.pdf The optometrist thought I was experiencing this because I have high visual acuity (when I was younger - it was "20/10", and I could read the whole of the bottom row of the optometrists' sight chart). Vector fonts don't give me eye fatigue when anti-aliasing is disabled, and this is a good second best (since konsole includes an option to disable this, presumably because this is a reasonably common request). Unfortunately with anti-aliasing disabled, the vector fonts look lower quality. e.g. see attachment which shows terminus vs noto mono (from konsole screenshots of both typefaces). The vector fonts are not unusable, they're just not as good when rendered like this. After trying various things to try and reduce eye fatigue, my working environment uses two 4k displays - the internal 4k 15" laptop display is OK for anti-aliased fonts (as long as use an external keyboard so that it is about 1 meter away from my eyes - I use display scaling to ensure text isn't too small at this distance), and another 27" 4k display (at the same distance, but I restrict this to working without anti-aliased fonts except for short time periods). I assume a 27" 8k display would be great for me with anti-aliased vector fonts, but these are much more expensive (about 10x more than a 4k display last time I looked). I've found I can workaround this issue by disabling scaling in konsole by launching it with this wrapper: #!/bin/sh export SAVE_QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS="$QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS" export SAVE_QT_SCALE_FACTOR="$QT_SCALE_FACTOR" unset QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS export QT_SCALE_FACTOR=1 exec /usr/bin/konsole ...and then restoring the SAVE variables in the shell rc so that they are not inherited by commands which are launched from within konsole. Tim.

Bug#616510: kdm or xserver crashes intermittently but often when interacting with screen saver unlock dialog
Package: kdm Version: 4:4.4.5-8 Severity: important Sorry about the broad subject. I'll describe what happens, maybe someone can help me work out where it should be reported. I got frequent crashes when the screen saver is running and I interact with the unlock dialog. This can happen in a resume from suspend or hibernate, but just now I clicked cancel on the unlock dialog and the xsession crashed. Because this causes data loss in open applications, I mark this important. The bug has been happening for two weeks, more or less. The kdm log reports segmentation faults so I report it against kdm first. It's a laptop with intel graphics. Bug#495188: kde4 currently uninstallable
aptitude -t experimental install kde4 fails because kdebase-workspace cannot be installed. Aptitude is looking for version 4:4.1.0-2, but for i386, the highest version in experimental is still only 4:4.1.0-1. My options appear to be: 1. Build it myself, from the source package 2. Wait for 4:4.1.0-2 to be uploaded. Tim Fairbank -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#545963: ktimetracker: Idle detection assumes task has not been stopped manually.
Package: ktimetracker Version: 4:4.2.4-1 Severity: important 1 Create and start a new task. 2 Leave the desktop idle beyond the "idle timer" setting (e.g. 15 minutes) - an idle detection dialog pops up - do not ack the dialog. 3 Manually stop the task (e.g. with 30 minutes elapsed on the task). 4 Wait some time (e.g. 5 hours because the dialog goes unnoticed). 5 Click "revert" on the dialog. 6 Idle timer dialog now subtracts 5hours+15 minutes from the task. Result - Task ends up with an incorrect total time (in this case *minus* 4 hours and 45 minutes). Fix - The idle dialog should stop adding to the idle time, if the task was manually stopped. e.g. perhaps it should display either: 'The task "task name" has been idle for a:bc' 'ignore idle period and continue timing' or 'go back and stop' or 'The task "task name" was idle from a:bc until d:ef' 'subtract x:yz' or 'ignore' ? I find that I frequently miss the idle detection diaglog e.g, because it's on a different desktop. As a workaround, I have used the "window behaviour" KDE system setting to force the idle detection dialogs to appear centered, and raised on all desktops - perhaps this should happen automatically as well? Ta, Tim. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.31-rc5-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages ktimetracker depends on: ii kdebase-runtime 4:4.2.4-2 runtime components from the offici ii kdelibs5 4:4.2.4-1 core libraries for all KDE 4 appli ii kdepimlibs5 4:4.2.4-1 core libraries for KDE PIM 4 appli ii libc6 2.9-23 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libkdepim44:4.2.4-1 KDE PIM library ii libkontactinterfaces4 4:4.2.4-1 KDE Kontact interface library ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.5.2-1 Qt 4 D-Bus module ii libqt4-xml4:4.5.2-1 Qt 4 XML module ii libqtcore44:4.5.2-1 Qt 4 core module ii libqtgui4 4:4.5.2-1 Qt 4 GUI module ii libstdc++64.4.1-1The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.2.2-1 X11 client-side library ii libxss1 1:1.1.3-1 X11 Screen Saver extension library ktimetracker recommends no packages. ktimetracker suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#396034: qmake-qt4: CONFIG+=opengl doesn't add QtOpenGL include path or link -lQtOpenGL
Package: qt4-dev-tools Version: 4.1.4-1.1 Severity: minor I have a Qt4 app built from a qmake-qt4 / .pro generated Makefile. Builds and works fine. I wanted to add some OpenGL code to it, using QGLWidget. I changed the CONFIG line of the .pro file from CONFIG+= qt thread stl exceptions precompile_header release to CONFIG+= qt opengl thread stl exceptions precompile_header release I was suprised that all this seems to do was to add -lGLU and -lGl to the Makefile LIBS path: to get a QGLWidget I had to include #include (rather than simply QGLWidget as expected from the docs) and to get a successful link I had to manually add LIBS += -lQtOpenGL to the .pro file. I'd expect adding opengl to the .pro CONFIG to add the QtOpenGL directory to the Makefile's -I include paths, and -lQtOpenGL to the linked libs. (This is certainly the case with the qmake in qt3 3.3.4 in Sarge). If this is fixed in the qmake with 4.2.1, apologies. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (200, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686-smp Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages qt4-dev-tools depends on: ii libaudio2 1.8-2The Network Audio System (NAS). Thanks for the tip; QT += opengl (instead of CONFIG += opengl) does exactly what I was expecting. However, the current etch docs may be out of date. My file:///usr/share/qt4/doc/html/qmake-variable-reference.html makes no mention at all of a QT variable, and lists opengl along with all the others used via CONFIG. Package: kdm Version: 4:3.2.2-1 Severity: normal kdm working authenticating against a directory with pam_ldap here; however, if a password change is forced by the admin, kdm prompts for the new password, but keeps prompting over and over no matter what is entered. Bug#194248: kdesktop very slow to load
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I believe I'm seeing an instance of this bug. When logging in normally (via gdm) I get presented with a blank root window (with the nice standard X effect) and nothing happens for a few minutes. This is after the kde splash comes up and loads everything. So, I did a startx (after stopping gdm) and loaded the kde components manually. kwin and kicker started fine, as did klauncher. kdesktop takes *ages* to do anything, but eventually gives me a desktop I can use. top reports nothing hogging the CPU. It could be a blocked file read with a long timeout perhaps? This started happenning this morning. Last night it didn't happen. The only difference between last night and today is...last night I was at home..today I'm at work (it's a laptop). Last night I had an external monitor plugged in. After it started happenning I upgraded my X packages to experimental, this means that the 3D acelleration on my video card (ATO radeon 7500) is now working (XFree86 4.3.something). kdesktop still takes ages tho. - -- Tim Wright Lecturer School of Mathematical and Computing Sciences http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~tim Public Key: http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~tim/key.asc -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (NetBSD) iD8DBQFAEF5bBxwvkDrH/B8RAqOuAJ9qNWholMkGtmBqcEBCeV6Ry9q92ACfR7Nv FIyYX2Pr7z0Z+K76NKlxSqQ= =Hs2A -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Package: kdm Version: 4:3.3.2-1 Severity: important On machines with not much entropy, kdm blocks on startup as it runs out of entropy from /dev/random. It should probably use /dev/urandom instead. This is fixed in KDE 3.4, so future uploads will take of this problem. In the meantime, you can manually tell kdm to use /dev/urandom by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc (RandomDevice=/dev/urandom). Cheers, Christopher Martin OK - out of interest, are there any plans to fix this for future Sarge revs (e.g. by making this the config file default), or is that against policy for a bug of this severity? One of the side-effects is that sometimes kdm gives up on /dev/random, and creates an unauthenticated X session - i.e. all clients can connect (although it does put a red warning on the log-in dialogue to reflect this). I suppose this does make it vaguely security related. Ta, Tim. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#327273: kdm does not start xorg server
Package: kdm Version: 4:3.3.2-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable There is crappage in /etc/init.d/kdm that causes that script to exit without an error message. The lines in question 58 & 59: # get the server text into the cache wc -l /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 > /dev/null 2>&1 Which is bollocks since the file above is a wrapper on Debian. Even if it wasn't it would not get any modules into "the cache", and anyway, if there is something wrong with the way the OS starts programs that bug should be fixed there. Redirecting errors to /dev/null is also bad when "set -e" is in operation since any error messages will be supressed but the shell will still exit. Bug#328978: mailto: for Gnome start-up not supported
Package: kmail Version: 4:3.3.2-3 Severity: wishlist This is a crack in the floorboards between KMail and Gnome/Galeon. It would be nice if it could be fixed. In particular, it uses this for its 'Send link as...' menu item.
