gcc-2.96 override disparity

2003-11-01 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

gcc-2.96_2.96-9_ia64.deb: package says priority is standard, override says
optional.
gcc-2.96-base_2.96-9_ia64.deb: package says priority is standard, override says
optional.
cpp-2.96_2.96-9_ia64.deb: package says priority is standard, override says
optional.
libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_2.96-9_ia64.deb: package says priority is required,
override says optional.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]

currently I do close all reports fixed in a specific version, if this
version becomes the default version. The fixed tag is misused for bugs
in a gcc version in Debian which is not yet the default version.

In converting the libnbio2-java package to build with all free tools, I
have discovered that gij is not able to run some programs that are part
of the NBIO test suite, although other interepreters such as Kaffe can.

There was a long discussion in debian-java on the general subject of
converting NBIO, starting here:

   http://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2002/debian-java-200211/msg00038.html

A discussion of the problems I had with gij starts near here:

   http://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2002/debian-java-200211/msg00047.html

At the time of this conversation, I passed the information in this bug
report off to Tom Tromey because he asked for it; I decided it would be
worthwhile to file a bug, as well.

The bug can be reproduced by first installing the libnbio2-java
package, version 2.0-5, and then building and running part of the NBIO
test suite based on the installed NBIO jarfile. The attached file
'script-gij' provides a recipe to reproduce the problem, assuming that
the libnio2-java package is already installed. (I hope the attachment
is OK; reportbug hosed it previously, and this time I attached it
directly from mutt.)

Version 2.0-5 of libnbio2-java may or may not be in the archive when you
get this report, since my sponsor may not have had a chance to upload
it yet. If you don't want to wait for it to appear the archive before
researching this bug, you can get it using this apt data source:

   # Cedar Solutions updates
   deb ftp://cedar-solutions.com/debian unstable main
   deb-src ftp://cedar-solutions.com/debian unstable main

or you can just grab it directly via FTP:

   ftp://cedar-solutions.com/debian/java/libnbio2-java/

Please let me know if there is any other information I can get you.
I'd be happy to help in any way that I can.

The issue is the same as that described in PR 1027.

RTH recently made some changes to how the C front end
prints %T (see discussion in that PR), but not I think
enough for it to be used in fixing this bug.

Reopen 172031 (not fixed)

2003-11-01 Thread Kenneth Pronovici
reopen 172031
thanks

It is not acceptable to close this bug under these terms. First off,
the source code *is* available (try 'apt-get source nbio'). Second off,
the detailed test case provided with the initial bug report still
results in a failure. The bug has not been fixed and is reproducible.

Besides that, it doesn't matter that NIO has been merged into libjava in
recent gcc-snapshot packages. I didn't submit this bug because I needed
NIO functionality. I submitted it because this code obviously stresses
the toolset.

I would have been (and would still be) happy to do additional research
if you can let me know what you and/or the GCC developers need from me
over and above the test case I provided with the original bug report.

Looking over the bug report trail, it seems they asked for more information,
and nobody responded. You need to provide more information; a good place
to start would be the "how to submit a proper bug report" docs for both
Debian and GCC.

I don't dispute that someone asked for more information and that nobody
responded. It's just that no one asked *me* for more information, which
I would have been happy to provide.

> You need to provide more information; a good place to start would be
> the "how to submit a proper bug report" docs for both Debian and GCC.

That's an awfully presumptuous statement, given the level of detail in
my initial bug report. I'm going to assume for the moment that you
didn't mean it to be as rude as it sounded.

The only open request for information I see in the bug report is:

No there is no way to confirm this any more because NBIO does not
compile any more with the current compiler, can you try it and tell
how to download NBIO and compile it?

NBIO does compile and is not difficult to find; but no one really needed
me to provide this information, as the nbio source package and
libnbio2-java binary package are right there in main, where apt-cache
can easily find them.

And yet, the bug report was closed with this explanation:

Closing this report. The NBIO files aren't available anymore and nio
has been merged into libjava already (get a recent gcc-snapshot
   package).

This is what I object to, mainly. The NBIO package certainly does
exist, and besides that, providing NIO in libjava doesn't fix the
problems encountered by NBIO (since NIO and NBIO are not the same
package).

So, as I said in my first email, I'd be happy to do additional research
if someone can let me know what they need. In the meantime, I've added
some comments in the GCC bugzilla report and I guess I'll manage it
myself from this point forward.

Thanks,

KEN

You may have been confused by the multiple layers of bug tracking going
on here. The above was written by an upstream GCC maintainer, who isn't
necessarily running Debian.

On top of that, it is longstanding GCC policy to refuse bug reports of
the form "go download the source from blahblahblah and build it yourself".
[implied: "and you'll /surely/ get the exact same error I got because all
systems are identical, aren't they?]". I assumed you weren't familiar with
this rule, which is why I suggested reading the bug reporting guidelines.

That's why "just apt-get from sid" doesn't do anything to help.

What more information do we need? For a C-family language, it would be
"complete preprocessed source, and all compiler diagnostics." I'm not a
Java maintainer, but I believe they need something similar. Does that help?

No, actually I understood that... mainly, I did not realize that I was
supposed to be managing this bug report with upstream myself.

Which is fine, but then I would have expected the Debian maintainers to
ask me to put something else together before submitting the bug upstream
(remember, I didn't submit the bug to upstream, I submitted it to
Debian, and someone else later submitted it upstream).

> That's why "just apt-get from sid" doesn't do anything to help.

You're right, that won't help the GCC folks, but it should help the
Debian folks whose bug we're talking about (again, I was under the
assumption that someone other than me was managing this bug).

Don't get me wrong - I don't blame the GCC folks for closing this bug.
If they didn't get enough information or any responses, what else could
they do? I'm annoyed at the lack of communication that kept the GCC
folks from getting the information they needed even thought they waited
three months for it.

Yes, it does.

There isn't much to NBIO - only about 2700 lines of code - and the test
case is pretty tiny. However, I'll spend some time trying to reduce
that to as small of an example as I can.

Incidentally, at this point, I'm not sure whether this is a compiler bug
or an interpreter bug. I'm leaning toward it being an interpreter bug,
since Kaffe seems to be able to run the test code with no problems even
when the .jar and .class files are built with gcj.
