It runs as a Linux kernel module. . In contrast to plain DRBD, it works asynchronously and over arbitrary distances. Our internal 1&1 testing runs between datacenters in the US and Europe. MARS uses very different technology under the hood, similar to transaction logging of database systems. . Reliability: application and replication are completely decoupled. Networking problems (e.g. packet loss, bottlenecks) have no impact onto your application at the primary side. . Anytime Consistency: on a secondary node, its version of the underlying disk device is always consistent in itself, but may be outdated (represent a former state from the primary side). Thanks to incremental replication of the transaction logfiles, usually the lag-behind will be only a few seconds, or parts of a second. . Synchronous or near-synchronous operating modes are planned for the future, but are expected to work reliably only over short distances (less than 50km), due to fundamental properties of distributed systems. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#687001: ITP: optional-dev -- fake (empty) dev package
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist X-Debbugs-CC: debian-devel@lists.debian.org Package name: optional-dev Version: 20120908 Author: Dmitry Smirnov License: GPL-3+ Description: fake (empty) dev package Purpose of this package is to provide an alternative for optional build dependencies which may not be available on some architectures. There are situations when some of the libraries listed in Build-Depends are optional i.e. build system is smart enough to avoid failure when such library is missing. Often some development libraries are not available on all architectures in which case maintainer should know beforehand which architectures may satisfy this dependency and maintain an up-to-date list of architectures for such packages, like in the following example: Build-Depends: libchamplain-gtk-0.12-dev [!m68k !sh4], libopenipmi-dev [!hurd-any !arm] From time to time such lists should be re-checked in case library become available on another architecture or when new architecture is added or if package is removed from some architectures. Another challenge is backporting package if some of its optional build dependencies may not be available on target distribution. For instance "libchamplain-gtk-0.12-dev" is not available for Squeeze so backporting would require removing it from Build-Depends. Finally maintainer might want to mark optional dependencies as such (can be done with comments). All the above problems may be addressed by using this package as alternative to optional build dependency like in the example below: Build-Depends: libchamplain-gtk-0.12-dev | optional-dev, libopenipmi-dev | optional-dev -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Not at all, it may appears "self contradictory" only because debian/control "language" doesn't have a right term for it. Or perhaps my wording is not perfect. If you got the idea, can you suggest a better word? Imagine a software that builds without a certain -dev package. When present this package may be used to activate an additional (optional) feature. When building for as many architectures as we have, situation when some dependencies are missing (or can't exist) on some architectures is not rare. However we still want to build our packages with all features possible. So here are two ideas -- one is to clearly see which build-dependencies are optional i.e. which packages are not critical for successful build; and another is to nicely and easily handle unsatisfiable non-critical "dependencies". The latter will make maintenance easier and may also be helpful for backporting or even for distributions who borrow our packages but may not have all their build-dependencies. Right you're concerned that we may not always have all "optional" dependencies ready for build. I'm not quite sure this would be the case for generic unversioned dependencies. The assumption that "optional" packages are generally available from repository. If so sbuild may not build with the very latest version available but this is no different from current situation. If we have an ongoing transition and some packages are temporary broken in "unstable" then indeed there might be a problem. Dimitry, which specific problem were you trying to > solve when you came up with optional-dev? Thanks Paul, primarily I was trying to address a problem when package build unnecessarily fails due to lack of "optional" dependency before an actual attempt to build. Due to risk of FTBFS maintainer should be careful with introducing dependencies that are non-critical for upstream build. In this case, enabling optional feature by adding dependency may make package build more fragile and create some difficulties for backporting as distinguishing required build-dependencies from optional ones may be not obvious. Now it became clear that idea is not feasible because it creates more problem than it solves. Thanks to feedback from Adam, Neil, Brian, Arno, Guillem, Simon, Geregor, Bastian and others I can summarise the flaws in the idea: * buildd servers can't fall back to alternative so even if we can avoid FTBFS in pbuilder by providing a trivially satisfiable fallback dependency, that is not the case for our build servers. * Rarely some packages may be not available for build due to transition, breakage or other circumstances. With silent fallback instead of FTBFS package may suddenly and unexpectedly lost some of its functionality. * NMUs are not guaranteed to be the same as original package due to possibility of missing optional dependency packages in the environment where NMU is being prepared. > > But I see the use case, e.g. for packages that rebuild the > > documentation if some tool is available and just skip it gracefully > > and use the shipped version, if not. > > We have the bootstrap stuff for that: > > http://wiki.debian.org/DebianBootstrap Very interesting, thank you. It is a free software but it may be illegal in some jurisdictions. This is a proof-of-concept implementation of automated installer for libdvdcss. Since we can't risk shipping libdvdcss itself here is a proposed implementation with the following features: * Installer is implemented as shell script installed as DPKG post-invoke handler. * Host package version meant to me an exact match of guest package with debian/watch file inherited from guest package for notifications about new upstream versions. * Package contains "guest" package sources, but not upstream sources. Upstream sources will be fetched using "uscan". * When "guest" package is built, its debian revision number is changed by appending "~local" to clearly mark generated packages. * During build of "guest" packages "Host" package is injected to Guest's Depends to make sure generated packages will be removed on "host" package remove/purge. * Host package uses debconf to warn user regarding possible implications. * If user choose to remove "guest" package, debconf configuration will be updated to prevent re-installation of "guest" packages. * "dpkg-reconfigure libdvdcss-pkg" may be used to build and install guest packages. Otherwise guest package(s) will be built and installed from DPKG post-invoke handler. Although automated, unfortunately this will delay installation till next apt-get operation. Is there a better way to hook into apt-get sequence? * Upgrades are gracefully handled i.e. when host package is updgraded it will build and install guest packages automatically, if prior user decision allows it. As mentioned above, installation will be delayed. Re: [SUMMARY/PROPOSAL] Orphaning another maintainer's packages
I think this proposal is a little bit too complicated and not straightforward enough. Clearly we have two different situations: * Maintainer is not active and we want to orphan a particular package. (just to orphan without adoption) For this case filing a bug "please orphan this package" with CC to QA team seems reasonable mostly because MIA may be an overkill (what if maintainer just don't have enough time with the absence of co-maintainers? Also consider the case of prioritising when active maintainer may be working hard on more important issues). Also MIA procedure (if applicable) may take too long -- it is not unusual when it takes 6 months or more to complete MIA checks and orphan all packages. If "please orphan this package" bug is answered (or closed) by maintainer it clarifies the situation immediately. Obviously anyone can update the bug with objections in which case we need some form of consensus to proceed. I would leave the decision to QA team as they are handling orphaning anyway. If bug was unanswered for let's say two months the package is free to orphan by QA team. I believe one month won't be enough: maintainer might be without connectivity while changing internet providers, attending funeral overseas, being on long vacation, on maternity leave, relocating, changing jobs etc. Such reasons can easily keep maintainer offline for a month. This will work if QA team won't hesitate to orphan in obvious cases. Another (second) situation: * Maintainer is not active and somebody intended to take over the package. I think proposal is addressing this case in order to protect package ownership. I believe generally we should trust developers (DDs) and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy. If DD is going to snatch the package without waiting, asking or following the procedure it would be a case for technical committee to investigate. Practically speaking taking over the package often bypasses orphaning. Either developers decide between themselves or new maintainer declares (her| him)self as such. The question is whenever we want package to be orphaned first, which I believe is unnecessary as long as new maintainer publicly announce ITA. Also I think we should trust DDs to decide how long to wait for maintainer to reply. One month seems reasonable but it depends: timing may be important before freeze or if package is blocking other packages. Proposal can recommend to wait one month, ideally two. As for DMs or non-members they would have to find sponsor to review their work anyway so we don't need a procedure to protect package ownership from hijacking by non-DDs. I like the idea of filing ITA against the package in question. It clearly mark the intention to work on the package and notifies the maintainer automatically. It doesn't have to be called "ITA" -- we can call it "co- maintainership intent" or whatever. Consensus 3 to 1 will be only needed if there are any objections but that's common sense. In obvious cases a single developer's decision should be just enough for adoption. I believe we're all respect each others work and our intentions are good so we need only little clarification how to adopt a package respectfully. For example I would mention to keep old maintainer in Uploaders unless (she/he) agreed to retire from maintenance. All the best, Dmitry. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

For merely orphaning minimising delay is not too important because if there is an active maintainer ready to adopt the package it is a "salvaging" procedure. For example if package is not maintained for years we can certainly wait for a month or two before orphaning even though there may be no need to wait that long. > Now my opinion is that I trust the DDs reviewing the ITO to judge > the package's situation before sending an ACK or NACK. One possible > judgement on an ITO can be "NACK until 2 months have passed or the > maintainer has agreed to orphan the package". Another possible judgement > on an ITO can be "ACK because this package has clearly not been maintained > for years, so please proceed without further delay". I'm convinced that acknowledging is ambiguous and unnecessary. First, what do you expect DDs to acknowledge -- the fact that package needs attention (this should be obvious already) or their approval of salvager? Assuming they're not familiar with salvager's work getting and acknowledgement might be as hard as finding a sponsor. Also this will rely on developers constantly reviewing ITA requests in other people's packages. Most certainly this will increase delay and the complexity of the procedure which might work only for popular packages with high visibility. I think in usual case we can expect no response for salvaging requests. Also without timed delay acknowledgements may be very unfair if few DDs voted for salvaging and therefore salvager got a green light without waiting for possible objections. Michael Gilbert's proposal to start salvaging with NMUs makes more sense as it allows to proceed gently and demonstrate motivation and willingness to work on the package. From non-DD prospective couple of successful NMUs will confirm salvaging intent and capacity better than random ACKs. If you expect ACKs then objections should be allowed as well but there might be unlikely situation when salvaging proceed after few ACKs without waiting for any further objections. I fear of conflicts it may create. Any form of agreement require fair amount of time for all parties to respond. If the matter cannot wait one can use NMU during transition of package ownership. This is in harmony with what Michael Gilbert proposed. In clear case when waiting is impossible without hurting the package state, DDs can take over without delays and take responsibility for future issues with maintainer. Acknowledgements will require developers to judge on other developer's intentions and I'm not sure wherever ACKs meant to approve the fact that salvaging is needed or to approve salvager and express trust to her/his capacities as maintainer. Probably not many people will find this role attractive so we can expect a lack of acknowledgements. > And if we're allowing any single nack to stop it, then I don't see > what requiring ack(s) buys us. It would force the salvager to make > explicit their criticisms of the package and hence the maintainer. I'm sure salvaging intent can be neutral or positive. It is merely a declaration of intent to help maintaining a package. When original maintainer is responding it is effectively a co-maintainership offer. Only when maintainer is not responding it becomes de-facto a declaration of adoption intent (ITA) so perhaps word "savlaging" is not perfect to express the idea. There is nothing to suggest that salvager has to express any criticism. As far as I can remember some adoption experiences of mine I was sincerely grateful to previous maintainers for their work. Absolutely. Even a bit of guidelines will do very well. For example at the moment it is not obvious that adoption can begin with ITA bug to the package but this little hint can save time and improve visibility of adoption comparing to private email to maintainer if it remains unanswered. Bug#705879: moreinfo
I didn't try to reproduce this but most likely it has nothing to do with boot partition. I had similar problem with mounting any ext4/external_journal partition after reboot because sd[a-z] mappings are not persistent. Therefore there is no guarantee that "sda" will be associated with the same device on next reboot. For example if you have two hard disks A known as "sda" and B known as "sdb" then after reboot you may have disk B mapped to "sda" and A bound to "sdb". Also this problem is probably not specific to Debian in any way. It may help if you try to create external journal using /dev/by-id or /dev/by-path (I didn't verify if it work) or use another workaround mentioned in http://raid6.com.au/posts/fs_ext4_external_journal_caveats/ Regards, Dmitry Smirnov GPG key : 4096R/53968D1B -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Bug:#700917: desktop-file-utils: call for (co-)maintainership [ITA]
Dear colleagues, I'm quite concerned that `desktop-file-validate` utility (provided by "desktop-file-utils" package) is checking .desktop files against outdated specification. On some occasions such "validation" recommend changes conflicting with the current specification (see more in #690279). Since beginning of 2013 I tried to raise concerns about it but got no reply from current maintainers whatsoever (see #700917). I think now would be a good time to upload updated package that I prepared. I'm taking responsibility for the package by adding myself to Uploaders. Unless there are any objections I'll wait for a week (or longer) before uploading. Thanks. For years we were shipping their certificates and IMHO there should be a damn good reason to stop doing so. I wish maintainer would state the reason for removal in cahngelog. Is situation with cacert.org certificates dramatically worsened lately? Any security flaws were discovered? What we're gaining from dropping their certificates? Did we notify cacert.org about our intentions to drop their certificates? What were their comments? Did they provide time frame to address our concerns? Cacert.org web of trust model is very similar to ours. To me it is essentially more trustworthy than what for-profit CAs offer. Cacert.org (as the only non-profit community managed CA) needs our support. How dropping cacert.org certificates is going to benefit our communities? The following comment highlight some benefits of providing cacert.org certificates: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718434#209 I want cacert.org certificates to raise no warning in browsers. This way we can encourage use of cacert.org certificates as alternative to self-signed certificates and therefore promote the use of HTTPS. Users are supposed to check certificate properties for encrypted connections if/when they want to check certificate authenticity. I think dropping cacert.org did more harm than good. Perhaps it's better to promote packages like "xul-ext-certificatepatrol" rather than punish cacert? After all I'm sure cacert.org team is doing their best just like we all do in Debian. I've chosen to develop because it allows me to improve Debian which is already the greatest tool and asset in my work. Developing for Debian is a great way to learn and to make your work available to wide(er) audience. Choosing Debian over other distributions is easy: I avoid derivatives due to their tendency to disconnect from original projects (communication delayed both ways; fixes need time to propagate etc.). We should all work together and in that regards only community-made distributions matter. Those principles limit the scope to original distributions which leaves pretty much only only three distros to choose from, namely Debian, Arch and Gentoo. The latter is not practical (unless you run it on powerful computers and can afford spending days to install updates, routinely); Arch is not universal (available on few architectures only), not very good for production (due to rolling-release nature) and time-consuming due to lack of defaults (which makes it usable only by experienced professionals). Debian (by huge margin) is more useful anywhere from VPS with ~128 MiB of RAM to desktops and powerful servers. Social contract and DFSG are two more arguments for Debian. License: Apache-2.0 Description: library for cyclic redundancy check (CRC) computation Crcutil library provides efficient implementation of CRC algorithms. It includes reference implementation of a novel Multiword CRC algorithm invented by Andrew Kadatch and Bob Jenkins in early 2007. The new algorithm is heavily tuned towards modern Intel and AMD processors and is substantially faster than almost all other software CRC algorithms. . Included whitepaper describes the details of Multiword CRC algorithm as well as other algorithms and CRC manipulation routines implemented by crcutil library. . Crcutil library computes: * Hardware-assisted CRC32C: 0.13 (Nehalem) CPU cycles per byte. * 64-bit and smaller CRCs: 1.0 (Nehalem) - 1.2 (Core) CPU cycles per byte. * 128-bit CRCs: 1.7 CPU cycles per byte. . Since computational speed of 64-bit CRCs is identical to 32-bit and 16-bit, the use of crcutil library enables widespread use of more reliable 64-bit CRCs instead of 32-bit ones. . As a bonus, crcutil also implements a number of useful CRC "tricks" (e.g. computation of CRC of concatenated blocks of data of known length and CRC without touching actual data). -- Best wishes, Dmitry Smirnov GPG key : 4096R/53968D1B signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
