Dual licensing for KDE-Oxygen Icons
Hi, I'm currently trying to get the KDE-Artist Team to once more dual license their Icon-Set under LGPL and Creative Common Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License. They dual licensed their icons in history but removed this option there've been multiple factors to do this and I was told that Debian was one of the reasons because you had problems with this dual licensing option. Can anyone here shed some light on this? Why can it be a problem to Debian if something is available under LGPL and another license (which itself even allows commerical usage)? Before I start with the monster work of going through the history of icons to find out who provided them I need to know if a dual licensing is possible at all. Does anyone here know of other parts of Debian who use a dual licensing option, e.g. Apache 2.0 + LGPL, ...? If you want to know more about the background of why I'm trying to do this. You can take a look at my blog http://tomsondev.bestsolution.at/2013/02/13/fed-up-with-famfamfam-icons-for-eclipse-org-lets-get-oxygen-icons/ Thanks for your help Tom -- B e s t S o l u t i o n . a tEDV Systemhaus GmbH tom schindl geschäftsführer/CEO eduard-bodem-gasse 5-7/1 A-6020 innsbruck fax ++43 512 935833 http://www.BestSolution.at phone++43 512 935834 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". If anyone said Debian has problems with dual licensing, someone must have misunderstood something or someone. Dual licensing usually means 'you can choose any of the two' for complying. e.g. dual licensed (GPL|proprietary) is seen quite a lot. Debian just chooses the GPL license. iirc back in the days, the oxygen icons was specifically *only* under cc-by-(sa)-2.0 and given that one isn't considered free by Debian, we got them to add lgpl as an alternative. /Sune -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Dual licensing for KDE-Oxygen Icons
Hi Sune, Thanks this is how I also always interpreted it as well, one can simply choose. Oxygen was dual licensed from the beginning but the 2 option was removed with http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/kdesupport/oxygen-icons/COPYING?r1=699615&r2=760422 5 years ago. It improves PHP performance by storing precompiled script bytecode in the shared memory. This eliminates the stages of reading code from the disk and compiling it on future access. The chances of Trinity, the desktop environment, being packaged in Debian are very low. I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it would have many source packages, none of which would likely be named trinity, so I doubt it would be an issue in any case. If the software you package is not of broad use, then "Trinity" is likely to become the name of other works. If they are more popular, then it may be that renaming packages will be necessary (think about the renaming of git to gnuit for instance). You can pre-emptively avoid that problem by not calling your package trinity.
