Actually, I believe it is. But it's not my authority to force that upon

The 4GB Address Space thing is one of the topics proposed as thesis at my
university. They need it for Virtual Machines or something.

I have to do one and thought this might be quite interesting. I have some
experience with kernel programming but not with Linux - and I don't know
much about Linux internals as yet.

So what I need to know is whether those modifications are rather
comprehensive/complicated or not and whether it is feasible to get finished
within 4 month...

Cheers,

Thomas

Debian-devel really is not the most natural place to ask such a
questions. It does not appear to be directly relevant to the
development of Debian, and I'd expect most people here haven't
ever even looked at kernel source.

Well, if s-p-u would *only* contained approved packages for the next

of packages right now.

  Right, I've always thought it'd be useful to have a place to make
  _accepted_ s-p-u uploads available (read: those that'll be in the next
  stable point release fore sure). Currently s-p-u is not that place,
  nor is debian-volatile as per its definition, but _maybe_ the exim4

Go into a shop, buy an amd64 or em64t system with 4+GB ram, install
Debian, download xen, compile xen, reboot, write it all up.

I wonder how hard it would be to patch reportbug so that it refuses to

The plan is to make s-p-u such a place, but until it happens, I think
volatile can have such packages as an exception, if the bug is severe
enough.

I've not followed this bug but AIUI SRM has approved the package for the

If the bug is important enough to make it easy for uers of current sarge to
upgrade then

the proper venue is security, not volitile.
If it is not important enough for the security repository then users will
just have to wait.

Although if I have misunderstood the issue than the above may not apply.

FrOSCon: Call for Projects / Last Call for Papers

2006-03-05 Thread Lars Ehrhardt

Hi,

FrOSCon is a two-day conference on free software and open source, which
takes place on 24th and 25th June 2006 at the University of Applied
Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, in St. Augustin near Cologne, Germany.

Focus of the conference is a comprehensive range of talks about current
topics in free software and open source. Furthermore, space will be
provided for developers of free software and open source projects to
organize their own developer meetings or even their own program.

FrOSCon is organized for the first time in 2006 by the department of
computer science in collaboration with the Linux/Unix User Group Sankt
Augustin, the student body and the FrOSCon e.V., and aims to establish
itself as the largest event of its kind in Rhineland.

=== Projects ===

Successful projects form the backbone of the open source and free
software movements. FrOSCon wants to acknowledge this important role of
projects for the community by offering special facilities to individual
projects.

=== Developer Rooms ===

Open source and free software projects are often coordinated primarily
via the internet, via email, the web and IRC. Nonetheless, personal
contact between members of the project is of paramount importance. A
conference like FrOSCon can serve as a meeting place, where distant
members of the project can come together and meet.

FrOSCon wants to offer dedicated developer rooms to individual
projects, which are organized by the projects themselves. Thereby, we
provide a space for projects to hold special-interest talks or
meetings, to congregate, exchange views and to socialize.

We have rooms in different sizes suitable for small developer meetings
up to sub-conferences. We offer Internet access in all developer rooms.
Besides tables and chairs, most rooms are or can be equipped with a
video beamer. If necessary, an additional lecture hall can be assigned
for talks or presentations where a larger audience is expected.

=== Application ===

Please send applications for a developer room via email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Please include at least the name of your project,
the URL of your website and the expected number of participants in your
email.

The Call for Projects ends on March 31st.

=== Call for Papers ===

Please note that our Call for Papers is still open until March 15th.
Don't miss the chance to submit a talk.

You can find all the details about the Call for Papers here:

http://www.froscon.org/wiki/CallforPapers

=== Booth Space ===

If your project wants to man a booth at FrOSCon, feel free to contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as well.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

The FrOSCon team

Bug#355488: ITP: bcpp -- C(++) beautifier

2006-03-05 Thread Miriam Ruiz
Package: wnpp

* Package name: bcpp

  Upstream Author : Steven De Toni <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.invisible-island.net/bcpp/

  Description : C(++) beautifier

 bcpp indents C/C++ source programs, replacing tabs with spaces or the
 reverse. Unlike indent, it does (by design) not attempt to wrap long
 statements.

 This version improves the parsing algorithm by marking the state of all
 characters, recognizes a wider range of indention structures, and implements
 a simple algorithm for indenting embedded SQL.

Well, personally, after the tasklist applet lost its ability to only
show iconified (minimized) windows, I found that the solution was along
the lines of: [At the risk of starting a flame war]

# apt-get install kicker
...
$ killall gnome-panel
... damn, it comes back.
$ while true; do killall -9 gnome-panel; done
... wait a few seconds, control-c the while true loop,
and now it doesn't come back. Yeah!
$ kicker

GNOME seems to be more and more focusing on the entry-level Linux user,
and less and less on advanced users. Most unfortunate, its much prettier
than KDE. And Nautilus beats Konqueror's file handling hands down.

Indeed. Wasn't there a fork of gnome for this reason recently?

Key-signing in Calgary

2006-03-05 Thread Shaun Jackman
Would anyone in the Calgary area like to meet up for lunch and a
key-signing some time this week? The tentative location is a
restaurant, to be determined, on Ninth Avenue in Inglewood.

Please cc me in your reply. Cheers!
Shaun

Yet another program that does this wrong? Indentation levels should be
represented by tabs and alignment (like multi-line function arguments) should
be done by spaces.
Gains: shows fine in _every_ editor, no need to set tab-width.

Losses: doesn't work well with many indenting styles (e.g. it would be a
complete lose for stuff indented in GNU style).

So no method really works well for every case (and thus the use of
programs like bcpp [which I admit I've never used]).
