Calligra Icons

2015-07-27 Thread Ken Vermette
'Ello Calligra devs;

This is Ken Vermette from the VDG.

We're working to better round out application icons for the upcoming 5.4
release, and we've produced two sets of icons for Calligra applications.
One set is "libre-like" in being colour-coded. The next set is a more
traditional set of icons with a uniquely drawn image for each application.
Here's some links to the two versions as they are now;

https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/xgusKHJAjt5OIyW
https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/QKBBJJxskII2J4i

(Icons in order are Karbon, Flow, Author, Braindump, Sheets, Plan,
Plan(work), Words, Kexi, and Stage for both images)

We'd like to get your feedback for which version is preferred, and any
feedback for the preferred version or specific icons. We currently have the
more traditional set in master, though we can easily switch. If opinions
are split the VDG seems to be leaning towards the traditional set.

The artwork freeze is the 6th, so if I could have any feedback before the
end of the month it would be greatly appreciated so I can make changes and
ensure the repos are updated. I can also outright replace some icons if you
tell me what is needed in the next few days. I apologise for the hasty
timeline. :/

Thank you, great work on Calligra!

I would prefer the first set for application icons, the second for
document icons

I'd prefer to not change our application icons at all - I'm sorry but I find
you new ones very anonymous and I would prefer if we keep our current ones

Amen to that!
In fact, I'd add that those proposed icons are useless in a GUI environment
where they are supposed to "be" the object the user interacts with to launch an
application or open a document of a certain type. IMVHO they're too abstract,
crucial details will get lost when rendered at a representative screen size and
colour contrast is badly chosen. I haven't checked, but I think more than a few
esp. from the 2nd set will look much too similar for daltonians and people with
other colour sight issues.

Re: Calligra Icons

2015-07-27 Thread Jaroslaw Staniek
Hi Ken,
Awesome. I see you put a lot of effort into that. I am commenting on
Kexi icon only. It's (by accident?) the most simplified of the icons,
and I love this fact.

Can we have a VDG forum thread?

PS: A follow up would be one thing, a pro artist made a Kexi logo (not
an icon) for me based on about 1 year long process. I'd like you to
see if the VDG wizards would like to comment and maybe refine it. It's
not public until I'll ask. The icon can become visually related to the
logo or not. It almost is in terms of colour palette at least.

Re: Calligra Icons

2015-07-27 Thread Ken Vermette
(This reply also covers other responses; but for some reason I haven't
received the rest of the emails properly. Also, sorry for the
double-message Boudewijn. I fail at mailing lists. :/)

By the sounds of it, the first (more traditional) icons are preferred,
basically for the same reasons I dumped the second set. So, if I may rail
the conversation onto these icons:

https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/xgusKHJAjt5OIyW

(Mainly because it's hard to tell which critique is targeted at which set
right now; so I'll work under the assumption that the colour-coded set is
being discarded)

@Jaroslaw Staniek; I'll post a thread in the forums for icon feedback. The
forum can sometimes move a bit slower than rapid iteration, but I'll try to
get forum feedback in before the freeze.

The Kexi icon was actually the icon with the most iterations! ;) Originally
I kept almost exactly on the original design, but the Breeze icon set isn't
meant to have 3D effects, so ultimately I made several abstractions until I
settled with the 'head on' icon. I think I re-did that Icon ~4 times. If
you want to email me that professional logo I can certainly put it in the
private VDG chat to see what the wizards have for it.

@C. Boemann; This doesn't need to be about changing the icons in your
applications, this is simply the potential rollout for the Breeze style.
That being said if we could work towards a set which you folks would be
proud to fly in your applications - all the better - but Breeze is aiming
to ship with a style appropriate for the desktop as a whole. We'd really
like your feedback on the icons even you don't seem them suitable for
official use, so you can be as happy as possible with your representation
in the Breeze icon set.

@René J.V. Bertin; for the Flow icon I can alternate between light and dark
to help the visually impaired better see the arrows, make the "shaded"
parts of the Kexi logo darker, and make the Words pen a bit clearer.
