This is the data from one of the two Laptops (both dont work so i think it
should be fine with only one).
I do think the problem has something to do with the parallel-to-usb cable. not
the cable itself but the driver support in karmic (do these cables need a
driver?!)

the 2 files i just posted are created with a jaunty live cd
i did the same thing with karmic again and i noticed:
if i plug in the usb cable i get the following dmesg output
[ 128.580133] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
[ 128.758767] usb 3-2: configuration #1 chose
didn't work for me as well:(

this effects me too. compiz is very slow.
this fixes it for a session:
compiz --replace --loose-binding
this should be default if it does not break anything else
