BTW, forgot to mention. I did a re-installation of a few packages today
(in order to fix a bug that prevented login into the system) by re-
installing gdm (which did not work) and then ubuntu-desktop (which
finally worked, allowing me to login). After that, the sound volume is
ok (at 100% input vol

I try various troubleshoots suggested online. Twice, those worked but again
sound is not working.

I have not tested this with external mic, but internal mic recording is very
noisy and the sound is hardly audible when I play the recorded audio.
Running Ubuntu 11.10. upgraded from 11.04. 11.04 also had the same problem.
It's a dual boot machine. Mic works fine in Windows 7
