BTW, forgot to mention. I did a re-installation of a few packages today
(in order to fix a bug that prevented login into the system) by re-
installing gdm (which did not work) and then ubuntu-desktop (which
finally worked, allowing me to login). After that, the sound volume is
ok (at 100% input volume). However, it is still very noisy. Can't use it
for videochat.
