Hello, Thank you for all this feedback. You all gave me enough to spend a week reading. Here is a report of my endeavours:
1. I finally installed ArchBang Linux: http://archbang.org This is essentially Arch Linux with a few installation decisions that makes Linux useable in about ten minutes. In fact, I installed it with a USB pen drive during a ride in the metro on my way home from work. And so it's a Bang! without the fragility of CrunchBang. A nice alternative for me would have been Peppermint Linux: http://peppermintos.com/ 2. I chose Arch Linux because it feels transparent: everything is configurable in a text file and every apps are accessible via shortcuts. Another reason is that the online documentation is impressively serious: https://wiki.archlinux.org The way this documentation is organized and maintained should be an example for every freeware endeavour of this size. For instance, here is the wiki answer to the question I asked this list: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Compared_to_Other_Distributions I find this quite impressive. 3. I followed the documentation and succeeded in compiling Scid almost out-of-the-box! I only needed to install the developper's base, Tcl and Tk, Pacman (Arch installer) being another nice surprise. I compiled it the traditional way, but I should note that Arch Linux is promoting ABS, which appeals to me: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ABS 4. I note that the maximum boardsize has a diagonal of about 3,5 inches, or something like 9 centimeters. This is about the third of my screen. Scid was not made for notebooks screens. I can post a screenshot in real size if need be. Or I can open a thread so people can point me to ways to solve this problem. The chessboard could span on about twice the size. This is not a small increase. Thank you all for your support and your suggestions, Best, B On Tue, May 31, 2011 at 6:00 PM, Mike Morrison <salvadors_cl...@yahoo.com> wrote: > With all this discussion of different flavors of Linux, I've got to ask... > has anyone else running SCID on any platform experienced the problem I > described in my earlier post about a week ago (comments disappearing while > browsing through variations)? > > --- On Tue, 5/31/11, Benoit St-Pierre <b...@oueb.ca> wrote: > >> From: Benoit St-Pierre <b...@oueb.ca> >> Subject: Re: [Scid-users] Linux Flavor for Scid >> To: "Scid Users List" <scid-users@lists.sourceforge.net> >> Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 2:00 PM >> Thanks for the info! >> >> I'll install Crunchbang later this evening.
