Although I use exactly the workaround proposed by Alexander so that I
don't have to maintain my custom Scid tree/package, I otherwise agree
with Michał.  In order to create the workaround I had to:

- Find out the problem is with locale setting.

- Create a custom script starting Scid.

- Ensure the wrapping script, and not the standard Scid script, is
  invoked when I start Scid.

This is nothing an ordinary user can do (and why should he in
principle?).  And even then it limits Scid to ISO-something instead of
full UTF-8 environment.
