Maybe your babel style is to old?
Did you call it like "\usepackage[english]{babel}"?
Can you send me a minimal tex file where this error occurs (plus log)?
Helpful for log file exegesis would be if you put as first line the command
"\listfiles" in front of "\documentclass".
BTW It also looks like that chess12 is outdated too. Today "everybody" uses
the free type-1 font SkakNew and as a macro package skak in combination with
packages chessboard/chessfs.
