One big problem is I can't seem to enter an arbitrary move on the board.  I

It's possible but not obvious.

First select the piece without moving it. To do this, press and hold the
mouse button on the piece or its square. Then move the mouse off that
square, and release the button. Though the piece is selected for movement,
the selection isn't highlighted (or otherwise indicated, as far as I can
tell).

Then click on the destination square, and the piece will move there.
