There are no silly ideas here. In fact though, they start up normally (in less 
than a second) when the default UCI parameters are used and the time it takes 
for SCID to declare the engine crashed is less than a second (by my visual 
sense, no strict timing done with system clocks accurate to the millisecond).

Silly question, maybe a completely idiotic idea, but if its done via timing, 
could it be that it just took to long for wine+rybka to start up for Scid to 
detect it?
