What I meant is that there is no way to tell an engine "analyze this list
of moves and continuations from this position, excluding those moves". This
must be handled by the user interface. So for me the best ways (and the most
flexible) are :
- enter manually moves while an engine is running and commit variations when
the user finds it relevant
- or from a position enter manually expected variations and let the engine
annotate the "game" (checking the option "annotate variations"). But this
will not prevent the engine to ponder on moves that are not in sub-vars.
