Sorry to follow up to my own message. I tweaked a few things
(Which did nothing) but all of a sudden I started getting :
stty: TIOCGETD: Operation not supported
receiving file list ... ERROR: out of memory in make_file
unexpected EOF in read_timeout
I find that weird, since both machines have 512M. The sending machine
has about 300M free, and when I run rsync the process gets to about 15Meg.
Wonder if its getting to 16M and dying for some reason. Yup, that must be
it. I changed the rsync path to put an "unlimited resources" program
first. It seems to work, got to about 58Meg...... and its running!

Wonder now if it hit something else, 64M limit?
