I use it with --backup-dir, and a wrapper script. The wrapper script
takes the changed-or-deleted files, that are saved into the
--backup-dir, and tar-bzip2's them for more compact archival.
They're kept in files named something like .../YYYY/mm/dd/HH:MM:SS,
I generally collect 4/day since I have the backup cronjob fire four
times a day.
The script also checks the backup filesystem (c. 130GB RAID-5 w/ no
spares), and if it's >90% full it commences deleting the bzipped
archives, working from the oldest forward, until it gets down below
80% full. That seems to be keeping a few months, with c. 50GB being
backed up (most of it in a RAID-5 with a hot spare).
I'm using RAID, and spare parts with which to reassemble the server
should it throw a controller or motherboard or whatever, for failure
recovery; the backups are really only there for recovering
accidentally deleted files.
I've posted the script quite recently, so I won't append another
copy to this note; I'll be happy to email it to anyone who asks.
