Two things:
1) The problem is known by RH and is something to do with 'yum' (as far
as I understand). I suspect it is not just a simple bug, but probably
more of a design problem. As such, we have seen no update to yum to fix
it (yet).
2) I would have thought that removing a package may cause a problem.
Things such as doc files and man pages are architecture independent, so
removing a package may well remove them as well. I would suspect that
you would have to remove the 32-bit version, and then forcibly install
the 64-bit version to ensure that all the required files are present on
the system. I could be wrong, an 'rpm -V' would confirm if the remaining
64-bit package is complete or not.
