FYI.. it's not a matter of why not. As originally stated, if security is at stake then I hand roll my own. Sometimes I just don't wait for them to push out a patch. If the patch is already available to download then I say go for it.

Its their responsibility as a vendor who provides updates to do so,recently they did so for Samba and KDE where they provided clean updates for these packages with serious vulnerabilities. I feel that there are certain packages that I have to absolutely build personally to get some fluff out, as well as programs such as Exim et al are better compiled to do wonderful stuff and leave the extra stuff which is not needed out.
