I would *not* recommend a USB DSL modem especially if you plan to use it with
Linux.  It is so much easier to configure an Ethernet NIC than a USB modem.  So
make life easier and ask for a Ethernet based DSL modem.  Then if you plan to
hook up all your computers at home, all you need to do is get a DSL
gateway/router like a Linksys or a D-Link and set up a small network.  With
USB, this is nuch more difficult to do.
