I have no idea what is available in the UK but at my house I have an Alcatel 1000. The phone company gave it to me with my DSL. It plugs into the phone jack (the filtered one) and my Ethernet card plugs into it - no dirvers for the modem at all. It has been fairly reliable. If I had the choice I would have gotten the next model up. By now this is probably the default model as mine is two years old. The reason being that this model gets hot in the summer. The way they built the box puts the cooling vents on the bottom with no fan. When it gets hot in my home office (it can get to almost 100 F at my house - that's F not C), the modem can sometimes over heat. So, I run it upside down in the summer (vents up).
Other than that it has been very reliable. I know this is a long shot for you in the UK but that is what I have.
