IIRC, the RedHat CD in rescue mode attempts to mount your linux
partitions automagically.

> cd /mnt/tmp
> chroot .
> lilo

It's enough to do lilo -r /mnt/tmp. That way you don't lose the root
filesystem in your rescue environment.
