You could go with the same brand as you have now, if it's working properly with linux.
In actuality, the UPS itself doesn't shutdown or restart anything...it can send signals to the system, if a cable is hooked up, and a daemon is monitoring that port, and that daemon can issue the correct commands. I believe that the APC units are supported. As to disposing of the UPS, you can actually send it back to the manufacturer (either original, or the one from which you get the new UPS) and they have the proper facilities.
