Ahh...that problem.  I ran into that one a year or two ago when I turned
on password synchronization between smbpasswd and regular passwords.
The first user that tried to change his own password ended up changing
root's password.  Not a pleasant feature!   Using sudo, we were able to
reset the password, and I havnen't had password synch since.
