That is like asking what is the best car and why, or what is the best TV.
Your question is very subjective, in that only you know what you want or
like as far as features, speed, etc, goes.
VIM has been around forever, and is extremely powerfu, so is emacs, or
xemacs, which will do anything including walking your dog.. <g> However,
there is a learning curve.
