Define secure, and define your environment. There's nothing wrong with NFS 
in a controlled environment. Nor is there anything wrong with SMB, ftp, 
http, or any other protocol...even tftp, when used appropriately.

It all depends on what you're trying to do, and what you're trying to 
avoid.
