You can use Linux as a multi-homed gateway or router with a second NIC
card...no need for an expensive router when you can use Linux and a pair
of $15 NICs.

Routing for a small home network is not very CPU-intensive. You can do
basic routing with an old 486 if you want to, but a Pentium 200 with 64 MB
of RAM should give you all the processing power you'd need to run DHCP,
BIND, and almost any iptables firewall you could throw at it.
