on my redhat box, the gateway is specified in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:
   DEVICE=eth0
   ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
  NETMASK=255.255.255.0
  NETWORK=192.168.0.0
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
   IPADDR=192.168.0.2
  GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
