Sounds like the Config file problem. you can get the default kernal config that comes with Red Hat from the directory configs in your source tree. Then, find the one that corresponds to your setup and copy it to the root of the source tree as the filename .config
Then, run make xconfig again and make your additions. This might solve all your problems.
