To get totally saddo and boring, but this comes from the old (pre-saxon I 
think) belief that the tree gods brought good luck, and touching the trees 
transferred that luck.

I believe only what I see so therefore America, Australia, or anything outside 
Yorkshire for that matter does not exist!!!
