Newbies are routinely told not to send HTML to the list. The argument
about whether we should just accept HTML mail, as it is apparently
accepted on some other lists.

FWIW, I think this list should be plain text.

A 31MB PDF is not as useful as a searchable archive of HOWTOs in a more
network-friendly format like HTML or plain text. The Linux Documentation
Project <http://www.tldp.org/> is working on this.

Then you're mistaken.

I have never reinstalled Linux in order to correct a decision. I have
only reinstalled as part of an upgrade process. Mostly that is because my
early Linux installations were for use at work. I needed it to work
correctly, so I was very careful to figure out exactly how to do what I
needed to do, even before getting the software.

New users should be encouraged to learn how to find the answers that are
already available instead of asking someone to take the time to post an
answer that may already be posted in a more complete document on the Web.

For various reasons, the posted docs may not be suitable for a particular
user or situation. Fine. But looking for that document should be the first
order of business. Teaching newbies how to look for that document is a lot
more efficient use of our limited resources than giving out answers to
every question.
