I recently got a Maxtor D740X-SL 80 GB hard drive. I installed in properly,
or so I think. After installing the drive I booted up my PC and it gave me
the following message:
PXE-E61 - Media test failure, check cable.
I think it is referring to the cable connecting the hard drive to the
motherboard, but the cable is newly purchased. I'm pretty sure that I have
the ATA PCI adapter card (how do I know I do for sure?). I've tried
switching the jumper from Master to Cable Select but to no avail. I am also
certain that the drive is getting power and is spinning. When I boot the PC
up, I don't hit F1, I just let it boot by itself. Do I need to press F1 to
enter BIOS? Should I be using MaxBlast to boot, and if so, where do I get
it? I've used two different data cables and get the same results: nothing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

PXE I think is an Intel network controller (Network Card) BIOS option. The
network card is telling you your network cable is not attached.

The reason this probably happened is because the hard drive you installed
isn't bootable (yet).

Each PC has a boot order, which you can set in the BIOS. Normally I set this
to CD, then Floppy, then Hard Disk, then Network Controller.

You'll probably find that if you put in a bootable CD or floppy, all will be
well.

Regards,
Ed.
